Taking Your Thyroid Medication With Meals And Snacks

When is the best time to take Thyroid Medication? | PRICELINE PHARMACY WEST BRUNSWICK

The synthetic thyroid hormone wont be absorbed properly unless you take it on an empty stomach and wait 45 to 60 minutes afterward before eating, Bianco says.

The simplest way to accomplish this is to take your thyroid medication first thing in the morning. Bianco says he has patients who set an alarm for 5 a.m., take the medication, and go back to sleep to ensure theyre taking it on an empty stomach. If you choose to take your thyroid medication at night, its important that you dont eat for four hours before taking it.

How To Take Your Medicine

To make sure your hypothyroidism stays under control:

Stick with the same brand. Different types of thyroid hormone medicine may contain slightly different doses. That could mess with your hormone levels.

Follow a schedule. Take your medicine at the same time each day. Aim for about an hour before a meal or at bedtime. Don’t take it when you eat. Food, as well as some supplements, siuch as calcium, can affect the way your body uses it.

Don’t skip doses. If you miss one, take it as soon as you remember. You can take two pills in one day if you need to.

Follow instructions carefully. Don’t stop taking your medicine without first checking with your doctor.

Can I Take Other Drugs With My Hypothyroidism Medications

There are several medications you should avoid taking with thyroid replacement medications. Most can decrease how much levothyroxine is absorbed into your body. Weve already talked about antacids, multivitamins with iron, and supplements with iron, calcium, or aluminum. Here are some other examples:

  • Proton pump inhibitors like

To be safe, its best to separate all other medications from your hypothyroidism medications, if possible. Aim to take levothyroxine at least 2 hours before your other medications, or at least 4 hours after.

Combining Your Synthetic Thyroid Hormone With Other Medication

Just as there shouldnt be food in your stomach when you take your hypothyroidism medication, its also important to avoid taking any other medication at the same time.

Specifically, antacids, calcium, cholesterol drugs, and iron supplements can each interfere with the way the thyroid hormone is absorbed. So, you should take these particular drugs four hours before or after taking your thyroid medication, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Most other medication can typically be taken 45 minutes to an hour after your hypothyroidism treatment, Bianco says.

Best times to take thyroid medication

But because of your circadian rhythmthe biological clock that governs sleep, hormone production, and other processesyour body doesnt respond to medications in the same way at different times of the day. Some drugs are not as effective or as well tolerated if theyre taken at the wrong biological time, says Michael Smolensky, adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Its not that theyre not effective at all, but theyre certainly much less effective or tolerated.

Now a cutting-edge field called drug chronotherapy advocates syncing your medication regimen with your circadian rhythm to maximize effectiveness and minimize side effects. Here we describe the best times to take meds based on chronotherapy and other factors. Note: Before you alter a current drug routine, be sure to first talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Diverging from your prescribed med schedule is just one of the everyday medication mistakes that can make you sick.

How Long Does It Take For Thyroid Medication To Work

The time it takes for the medication to work is unique to each person.

Once you start your medication, it can take a few weeks to start noticing an improvement in your symptoms. However, some people see their symptoms get better almost right after starting.

To see how your body responds to thyroid medication, you should retest your thyroid function about six weeks after starting or changing your prescription. Depending on your symptoms and lab results, your doctor may make changes to your dose. For example, if you are still having symptoms, you may need a higher dose of medication.

Sometimes, it can take several dosage changes, and even in medication, to get the results you need. However, once you find the right combination, it’s advantageous to stick with it unless something changes or your symptoms return.

Other medications can interfere with thyroid laboratory measurements, but not with the actual functioning of the thyroid.

A few examples of these medications include:

Lastly, research has found that the supplement biotin can interfere with the measurement of thyroid blood tests. Therefore, it’s recommended that people who take biotin stop doing so two days prior to having their thyroid blood tests.

Bedtime Vs Breakfast Levothyroxine Administration May Boost Free Thyroxine Level

Adults with hypothyroidism taking levothyroxine therapy may derive a greater benefit when taking the drug at bedtime vs. before breakfast, according to findings published in Clinical Endocrinology.

The timing of levothyroxine administration has become a hot topic in recent years,Ru Sun, of the department of blood transfusion at the Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College, China, and colleagues wrote in the study background. The Chinese Society of Endocrinology recommends that levothyroxine should be consistently taken 60 minutes before breakfast. However, the American Thyroid Association recommends that, if possible, levothyroxine be consistently taken either 60 minutes before breakfast or at bedtime , for optimal, consistent absorption. Recently, some studies have been conducted in which the efficacy of levothyroxine administration before breakfast and at bedtime were compared. Some studies reported that the efficiency of levothyroxine at bedtime was better than administration before breakfast. However, other studies showed no significant difference with bedtime vs. morning intake.

In a random-effect analysis performed on nine studies, researchers found that levothyroxine administered at bedtime was associated with a higher free thyroxine level when compared with breakfast administration .

How to Take Your Thyroid Medication Correctly (For BEST Results)

The study examined 10 healthy subjects with normal thyroid function to assess whether consuming cows milk has a direct effect on levothyroxine absorption.2

Following an overnight fast, serum total thyroxine concentrations were measured at baseline and at 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours after the participants took 1000 g of oral levothyroxine alone or when coadministered with 12 ounces of 2% milk.

Results showed that the TT4 concentrations were significantly lower when levothyroxine was taken at the same time as the milk as compared to levothyroxine alone.2 Also, peak serum TT4 concentrations dropped significantly when cows milk was coadministered with levothyroxine than with the levothyroxine alone.

The researchers believe that both the calcium content of the milk and the presence of protein might directly interfere with the proper and full absorption of levothyroxine, complicating the management of hypothyroid.2

Our results show that calcium-rich foods should be consumed apart from thyroid hormone medication, as much as possible, Dr. Leung tells EndocrineWeb. This will help ensure that thyroid blood tests remain constant, thus decreasing the need for potentially unnecessary changes in the dose of thyroid replacement needed to manage your hypothyroidism.

Calcium-rich foods including cows milk, yogurt, cheeses and ice cream and frozen yogurt. Also, non-dairy milk like those made from almond, soy, and rice, which are fortified with calcium.4

Best At Night: Rheumatoid Arthritis Meds

The problem with taking a steroid-based pain reliever like prednisone when you wake up is that most arthritis sufferers experience joint stiffness and pain in the morning. If you take your medication at nightideally, a low-dose, delayed-release formula that takes effect around 3 can curb the inflammation that happens while youre sleeping and ease those morning symptoms. Thats what Italian researchers found: They say this timing takes the bodys circadian rhythms into account and can help tamp down inflammatory substances like cortisol and cytokine that can peak during the night. Other research suggests taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as Motrin and Aleve at night may also reduce pain symptoms before they really kick in.

Timed To Symptoms: Osteoarthritis Meds

According to the research published in Pharmaceutics, osteoarthritis pain peaks in the late afternoon and evening, so its best to start NSAIDs, such as naproxen and ibuprofenthe most widely used meds for osteoarthritisbefore noon, so theyll kick in at the appropriate time. If youre prone to afternoon pain, take meds between mid-morning and noon for evening pain, schedule them for mid-afternoon and for nighttime pain, take them with your evening meal.

If You Take More Than The Recommended Amount Of Synthroid

Call your doctor right away if you believe youve taken too much Synthroid. Another option is to call the American Association of Poison Control Centers at 800-222-1222 or use its online tool. If you have severe symptoms, immediately call 911 or your local emergency number, or go to the nearest emergency room.

The Synthroid dosage your doctor prescribes will depend on several factors. These include:

  • the type and severity of the condition youre using Synthroid to treat
  • your age and body weight
  • any side effects you have
  • your thyroid hormone levels

Other medical conditions you have can also affect your Synthroid dosage.

Overindulging On Certain Foods Which Can Also Affect How Your Thyroid Meds Work

Are you taking your thyroid medication properly...are you ...

For the most part, you shouldn’t have problems with most foods if you wait at least 45 minutes after taking your thyroid medication before you eat. But if you dont wait long enough, certain foods may impair absorption of the hypothyroid medication more than others, says Deena Adimoolam, MD, an assistant professor of medicine, endocrinology, diabetes, and bone disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. That includes foods that are high in calcium, such as milk, cheese, yogurt, kale, and spinach.

Eating a lot of soy has also been thought to impair the absorption of thyroid hormone, but a review of studies published in December 2016 in the journal Nutrients noted that its not necessary for most people with thyroid disease to avoid soy foods because medication dosage can be adjusted accordingly, if necessary. If you eat about the same amount every day, your healthcare provider has probably found the proper dose of thyroid hormone to counteract soys effects. So just be sure to stay consistent with your soy intake.

Synthroid And Withdrawal And Dependence

Stopping Synthroid doesnt cause withdrawal. With withdrawal, you have unpleasant symptoms when you stop taking a drug that your body has become dependent upon. But you shouldnt stop taking Synthroid unless your doctor approves this first. Stopping the drug can cause symptoms of the condition youre taking it for to come back or get worse.

Stopping Synthroid can also affect other medical conditions you have or other medications you take. For example, the dosage of certain diabetes drugs may need to be adjusted after stopping Synthroid treatment. This is because Synthroid can make certain diabetes drugs less effective.

Talk with your doctor if you have questions about ending your treatment with Synthroid.

Tips For Taking Your Thyroid Medication

There are several things you need to be mindful of when it comes to taking your thyroid medication.

Do not change brands

Once you find the correct dose and medication, you will want to stick with it. People often find there are subtle differences in formulations that can have some not-so-subtle effects. Therefore, you will not want to switch between the generic and brand names of your thyroid medication.

Take your medication at the same time each day.

It’s important to follow a schedule when taking your thyroid medication. Generally, it is best to take your thyroid medicine on an empty stomach for at least 30 minutes before putting anything in your stomach.

Most people take their thyroid medication first thing in the morning. However, you should take your thyroid medication at least an hour before eating or drinking. So if you prefer your morning coffee or tea right away, it may be best to take your medicine at night.

Be cautious with other medications

Some medications and supplements can interfere with how your body absorbs thyroid medication. Ensure your thyroid doctor knows everything you are taking so you know when to take your thyroid pill.

Don’t miss a dose

If you forget to take your thyroid medication, take it as soon as you remember. Also, if you need to skip a dose for surgery or another reason, make sure to check with your doctor first. You are often allowed to take your thyroid medication before surgical procedures as long as you inform your health care team.
