Can Thyroid Weight Gain Be Reversed

What Causes Thyroid Weight Gain? (And How to Fix it for Weight Loss)

Some people with hypothyroidism do lose weight once they start taking levothyroxine. However, most thyroid weight gain will need to be reversed with lifestyle changes and medical assistance when needed. Can Hypothyroidism Go Away on Its Own?

It is occasionally possible for hypothyroidism to go away without treatment. This would occur in a temporary inflammatory condition of the thyroid, called thyroiditis, which generally reverses itself in time.

However, if you have especially low thyroid levels, it is likely that you will need to take medication for the rest of your life. The good news is that hypothyroidism is not a progressive disease and is easily controlled with medication, so you can live a normal life.

Has Your Dog Gained Weight? A Thyroid Problem Could Be to Blame

Chubby pets may look cute but even a few extra pounds can increase your dog’s chances of developing diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and other health conditions. Gaining weight isn’t always due to overeating, but can be a sign of a thyroid condition. The risk of thyroid problems increases as your dog ages and is more common in certain breeds.

Determining the Cause of Your Pet’s Weight Gain

Like most pets, your dog probably has no difficulty letting you know that he or she is hungry. No matter how hard you try, it can be difficult to resist those pleading eyes or ignore the empty food bowl dropped at your feet.

An occasional snack between meals probably won’t change your pet’s weight, but too many snacks and treats can have a detrimental effect. You may not be giving your pet between-meal snacks, but what about other family members? When the whole family slips a treat to the pet, obesity can be an unfortunate consequence.

Keep in mind that nutritional requirements change as your pet ages. Adults dogs don’t need to consume as many calories as growing puppies, and less active senior dogs need even fewer calories. If you continue to feed your adult dog puppy food or fill your senior dog’s bowl with food meant for a younger dog, the numbers on the scale may increase even though your pet isn’t overeating.

Weight Gain With Hyperparathyroidism: Is It Just Because Im Tired All The Time

There may actually be a scientific / biochemical reason for gaining weight when you have a parathyroid problem that is more complex than just being tired and less active because you feel like crap. Another group of doctors published some research on this topic a few years ago. They found that fat cells dont break down their fat very well when exposed to high PTH levels. Thus, their research suggests the excess PTH has some role in preventing weight loss in patients with hyperparathyroidism. Dr McCartys research is important in that it suggests the association between weight gain and hyperparathyroidism may be reversed if the parathyroid tumor is removed. The footnote to this research and the article is at the bottom of this page.

What Common Symptoms Can Happen With Thyroid Disease

There are a variety of symptoms you could experience if you have a thyroid disease. Unfortunately, symptoms of a thyroid condition are often very similar to the signs of other medical conditions and stages of life. This can make it difficult to know if your symptoms are related to a thyroid issue or something else entirely.

For the most part, the symptoms of thyroid disease can be divided into two groups those related to having too much thyroid hormone and those related to having too little thyroid hormone .

Symptoms of an overactive thyroid can include:

  • Experiencing anxiety, irritability and nervousness.
  • Having trouble sleeping.
  • Experiencing an intolerance to cold temperatures.

Exercise Almost Every Day

Weight Gain And Thyroid Cancer ... Kind Csabooster

We recommend regular exercise for thyroid patients to lose weight. Exercise is a fantastic natural treatment for hypothyroidism, helping to:

  • Relieve depression
  • Lose unwanted weight
  • Maintain that healthy weight

Physical therapists and endocrinologists alike would probably suggest low-impact cardio exercise, especially to start out. Consult with a doctor before engaging in higher intensity strength training.

Aim to exercise for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

How much weight should you lose with hypothyroidism? Determine your healthy weight by starting with a normal BMI range for your height. Every person is different, so talk to your doctor about exactly how much weight you should try to lose.

What Are The Risks Of Removing The Thyroid Gland

Behind your childs thyroid gland runs the recurrent laryngeal nerves that help to move the vocal folds and the parathyroid glands which help regulate their bodys calcium levels.

Some of the major risk factors following the removal of the thyroid gland are:

  • A hoarse/breathy voice.
  • Low calcium levels.

After surgery your child will need to take a medication to supplement the thyroid function and in some cases a medication to keep calcium levels elevated.

Other risk factors include:

  • A scar on the neck.
  • Bleeding.
  • Fluid collection under the skin.
  • The need for future procedures such as removal of the lymph nodes from the neck.

Weight Gain Caused By Parathyroid Surgery: A Myth

There is no physiologic mechanism for parathyroid surgery to cause weight gain. There is no reason that removing a parathyroid tumor and re-establishing normal body hormone and calcium levels would cause weight gain. Moreover, we just dont see weight gain in large numbers of our patients and have very few patients who complain about this in general.

What Do Our Parathyroid Patients Say About Weight Gain After Parathyroid Surgery

Weight loss is actually more common after parathyroid surgery than weight gain. Remember that the number one symptom of hyperparathyroidism is fatigue. People with a high calcium and/or PTH often complain that they are tired all the time. Or that after about noon every day they just want to take a nap, but the nap doesnt help them feel better. Our patients say they are tired of being tired. This chronic fatigue means that people are less active. They arent outside working in the yard. They tend to spend more time on the couch than they used to. And most gain some weight, as noted in the scientific literature discussed above.

How Thyroid Function Can Affect Your Weight

Low Thyroid- How Low T3 Causes Weight Gain, Fatigue and Brain Fog-Dr Hagmeyer Video

Thyroid hormone helps regulate your metabolism. Your metabolism is how much energy your body uses and at what rate. This means that thyroid hormone also affects your basal metabolic rate. This is how much energy your body uses to keep functioning while its at rest.

In most cases, excess thyroid hormone is associated with a high basal metabolic weight. This means that your body burns more energy while its at rest, so weight loss is a common symptom of hyperthyroidism.

This also means that not producing enough thyroid hormone is usually associated with a low basal metabolic rate. Therefore, hypothyroidism can cause weight gain. Your body isnt burning as much energy, which can lead to a calorie surplus.

But your metabolism is affected by a lot more than just thyroid hormone. Other hormones, how much and what you eat, your physical activity, and many other factors play a role. This means that thyroid hormone levels arent the whole story when it comes to losing or gaining weight from thyroid conditions.

Some people with hyperthyroidism might experience weight gain instead of the more common weight loss. Some reasons why that might happen include:

What Do You Do When Your Child Has A Thyroid Nodule

The first step if your child has a thyroid nodule is to get an ultrasound. This will help your healthcare provider assess the quality of your childs nodule and determine if additional workup is needed. In some cases a repeat ultrasound is needed, and in some cases a biopsy. This all depends on what it looks like on the ultrasound. Some nodules require labs to look at how the thyroid is functioning.

Key Steps To Stop Thyroid Weight Gain

When youre proactive about helping your body restore thyroid balance, you will see changes in your weight, energy and mood. The sooner you take action, the faster youll feel better about your body and thyroid health.

1. Ensure you provide your thyroid with essential minerals.

The most important minerals for thyroid health are iodine and selenium.Iodine is a key building block for making thyroid hormones T3 and T4. Supplying Iodine in very specific amounts can make a measurable difference in rebalancing thyroid function. Selenium helps convert T4 into T3, the most useful hormone form. Selenium also regulates thyroid hormone synthesis and metabolism.

How to get them: Find iodine in sea vegetables, seafood and iodized sea salt. Get selenium from Brazil nuts, mushrooms, beef and sunflower seeds. You can also get both minerals in a good supplement.

2. Add targeted herb extracts to boost thyroid function.

Science shows that several herbs can positively affect your thyroid function and stop thyroid-related weight gain:

You can get all these herbs with precise amounts of iodine and selenium in our combination formula, T-Balance Plus. This formula supports healthy signaling between your thyroid and the rest of your body. If youre taking thyroid medication, talk to your practitioner about this supplement.

3. Eliminate gluten-containing foods.

Low Thyroid Causes Other Hormones That Lead To Weight Gain

The association between weight gain and hypothyroidism is somewhat complex and includes much more than just your thyroid.

The easiest way to think about this is to realize that everything in your body is connected.

You can think of this connection like a spider web.

When one string is pulled, it pulls the entire web.

Meaning you can’t really change one thing without affecting several others.

This is true of thyroid hormone as well.

As thyroid hormone levels fall it causes a chain reaction which changes multiple other hormonal systems in your body.

And guess what these systems do?

They all contribute to your weight!

Let’s walk through what happens:

High insulin levels

The connection between high insulin and weight gain has been well established.

What you probably don’t realize is that this connection extends to patients without diabetes or pre-diabetes as well.

Patients with highly elevated levels of fasting insulin still have weight gain problems.

So we know that high levels of insulin lead to weight gain, but what you probably don’t know is that thyroid hormone influences insulin resistance.

Low levels of thyroid hormone lead to the condition known as insulin resistance.

This connection is so strong that low thyroid hormone can actually lead to type II diabetes .

And here’s the bigger deal:

Replacing thyroid hormone in your body doesn’t take care of this hormone imbalance!

That means you can replace your thyroid hormone, but you will still have insulin resistance.

Why?

Losing Weight With Hypothyroidism

Pin by Sara Elizabeth on FYI

If you have hypothyroidism, losing weight can be very challenging. Many people think that once you start taking thyroid hormone replacement medications, the weight just falls off. While treatment can help you lose some of the weight you have gained, it takes planning, hard work, diet, exercise, and getting enough sleep to shed a number of pounds.

Determining how far off you are from your ideal weight and body fat can help you assess how much weight you need to lose. A body mass index calculator can help you get started.

Another step to weight loss is determining your own basal metabolic rate , which can help you gauge your metabolism and guide you in coming up with a target calorie intake per day.

Signs Your Thyroid Is Making You Gain Weight

Going up a couple of pant sizes could be caused by any of these ‘healthy’ habits secretly behind your weight gain, but it’s also one of the top symptoms of hypothyroidism. Also called an underactive thyroid, hypothyroidism is a condition in which your metabolism-running thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormones to meet your body’s needs.

Hypothyroidism is more common than you would believe the metabolic disease affects 4.6 percent of the U.S. population and millions of people are currently hypothyroid and don’t know it.

There are over a dozen common symptoms of hypothyroidism, and weight gain is one of the most prevalent.

“Patients with hypothyroidism will have a generalized slowing of their metabolism and reduction in their basal metabolic rate ,” explains Dr. Reshmi Srinath, assistant professor of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Bone Diseases at Mount Sinai.

“This can lead to changes in the way their body expends energy. With a lower metabolic rate, people may gain excess weight eating a similar diet. Some of this may be excess fat, but there may also be fluid retention.” So, even if you’re diligently dieting and working out, you may still gain weight if you have hypothyroidism.

What Causes Thyroid Disease

The two main types of thyroid disease are hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Both conditions can be caused by other diseases that impact the way the thyroid gland works.

Conditions that can cause hypothyroidism include:

  • Thyroiditis: This condition is an inflammation of the thyroid gland. Thyroiditis can lower the amount of hormones your thyroid produces.
  • Hashimotos thyroiditis: A painless disease, Hashimotos thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition where the bodys cells attack and damage the thyroid. This is an inherited condition.
  • Postpartum thyroiditis: This condition occurs in 5% to 9% of women after childbirth. Its usually a temporary condition.
  • Iodine deficiency: Iodine is used by the thyroid to produce hormones. An iodine deficiency is an issue that affects several million people around the world..
  • A non-functioning thyroid gland: Sometimes, the thyroid gland doesnt work correctly from birth. This affects about 1 in 4,000 newborns. If left untreated, the child could have both physical and mental issues in the future. All newborns are given a screening blood test in the hospital to check their thyroid function.

How Can I Control My Thyroid Weight Gain

If you have hypothyroidism, taking levothyroxine may help you lose any weight you gained as a direct result of your underactive thyroid. Otherwise, losing or maintaining your weight requires the same things as a person with a normal thyroid: lifestyle changes, and sometimes, counseling and medical help.

Common Symptoms Of Hyperthyroidism Include:

Graves Thyroid Weight Gain Causes
  • Sudden Paralysis. Known as thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, this relatively rare symptom involves severe muscle weakness and only occurs in people with high hormone levels. It predominantly affects Asian and Latinx men.
  • Swollen Base of Your Neck and Thyroid. Also called a goiter, an enlarged thyroid gland is usually painless but can cause a cough or, in more severe cases, make it difficult for you to swallow or breathe.
  • Weight Fluctuations. Hyperthyroidism is notoriously linked with weight loss, and for good reason: it kicks your metabolism into high gear, often making it difficult, if not impossible to put on weighteven with increased food intake. Although less common, it is also possible for your oversized appetite and resulting food intake to increase to a point where they overtake the increase in your metabolic rate, resulting in weight gain.

    How is hyperthyroidism diagnosed?

Early detection is important so that you and your doctor can outline a plan for hyperthyroidism treatment before it causes irreversible damage. Dr. Brenessa Lindeman, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Medical Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, emphasizes the need for people with suspicious symptoms to advocate for your own health and get checked for hyperthyroidism early to prevent serious complications like osteoporosis, premature menopause, or even cardiac arrest.

    How Is Thyroid Disease Diagnosed

Sometimes, thyroid disease can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are easily confused with those of other conditions. You may experience similar symptoms when you are pregnant or aging and you would when developing a thyroid disease. Fortunately, there are tests that can help determine if your symptoms are being caused by a thyroid issue. These tests include:

    • Blood tests.
    • Physical exams.

    Blood tests

One of the most definitive ways to diagnose a thyroid problem is through blood tests. Thyroid blood tests are used to tell if your thyroid gland is functioning properly by measuring the amount of thyroid hormones in your blood. These tests are done by taking blood from a vein in your arm. Thyroid blood tests are used to see if you have:

    • Hyperthyroidism.
    • Hypothyroidism.

The specific blood tests that will be done to test your thyroid can include:

These tests alone arent meant to diagnose any illness but may prompt your healthcare provider to do additional testing to evaluate for a possible thyroid disorder.

    Additional blood tests might include:

Talk to your healthcare provider about the ranges for these thyroid blood tests. Your ranges might not be the same as someone elses. Thats often alright. If you have any concerns or worries about your blood test results, talk to your provider.

    Imaging tests

An ultrasound typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Does Thyroid Disease Cause Weight Gain

One of the most common questions I have been asked as a thyroid specialist is Does thyroid disease cause weight gain?.

The answer is simple, thyroid disease may cause weight gain, but not always. However, the weight gain from thyroid disease is never, ever massive. If youve put on 12 kilos over a year, its impossible that thyroid disease is causing this.

    Why is that?

Its because thyroid disease never causes rapid, massive weight gain. In fact most people with thyroid disease have had it for years before its actually diagnosed. The symptoms you can get such as tiredness, dry skin, low mood and weight gain are very subtle. Most people think its due to other causes, such as changes in their life. Because thyroid disease takes years to develop, the weight gain too is gradual. Even if you did gain weight, treating thyroid disease usually doesnt make you go back to your original weight quickly.

How much weight can I put on if I have thyroid disease?

What can I do if my weight loss is not due to thyroid disease?

From my experience once medical conditions have been excluded, massive weight gain is usually due to poor diet, lack of exercise, genetic factors or a combination of 2 or more of these factors. Its unfortunately not what most people want to hear, but understanding this may hold the key to achieve genuine and long-lasting weight loss.
