Supplements And Thyroid Health: What To Know
Depending on the type of disease, thyroid conditions are typically treated with medications like thyroid hormone replacement, surgery, and other procedures, such as radiation therapy for thyroid cancer.
In addition to conventional treatments for thyroid conditions, research shows that dietary interventions, including supplements, may help treat certain thyroid diseases.
However, certain supplements may do more harm than good when it comes to thyroid health.
This article explains how supplements may help certain people with thyroid-related health conditions.
Inositol And Thyroid Function/autoimmunity
Inositols are essential for the signaling of hormones such as insulin, gonadotropins , and TSH. In the thyroid, imbalances in the inositol metabolism can impair thyroidal hormone biosynthesis, storage and secretion . TSH signaling is rather complex involving two different signal cascades. One branch of the signal cascade involves as second messenger cyclic AMP , while another branch is inositol-dependent . In a controlled trial, 48 women with autoimmune subclinical hypothyroidism were randomized to treatment with either selenomethionine alone or selenomethionine plus myo-inositol. The authors demonstrated that patients with autoimmune thyroiditis and subclinical hypothyroidism, treated with myo-inositol and selenomethionine, had a reduction of the increased TSH, which selenomethionine supplementation alone was not able to promote. However, the concentration of both thyroperoxidase and thyroglobulin autoantibodies declined in both groups . In a subsequent study of 86 patients with Hashimotos thyroiditis and subclinical hypothyroidism, the same authors found that the administration of myo-inositol and selenomethionine for six months significantly decreased TSH, TPOAb, and TgAb concentrations, while at the same time enhancing thyroid hormones and personal wellbeing, thereby restoring euthyroidism in patients diagnosed with autoimmune thyroiditis . This was confirmed in a larger study of 168 patients with Hashimotos thyroiditis and subclinical hypothyroidism .
The Right Thyroid Supplements Can Make A Huge Difference
It is possible for many people to improve thyroid hormone levels and lower thyroid antibodies without medication or to augment levels even if you are on medication. I personally have seen patients antibodies go from well over a 1000 down to as low as the 40s close to normal and the need for medication doses be significantly reduced. However, theres definitely a time and place for thyroid medication, which I also sometimes prescribe in my medical practice. Research suggests that certain supplements nutrients and herbs can reduce thyroid antibodies, improve free T3 and free T4 levels levels, and stabilize TSH all markers that thyroid health is improving. Selenium: Compound And Physiology
Selenium is a non-metal chemical element that is an essential micronutrient. Selenium salts are toxic in large amounts, but trace amounts are necessary for cellular function in many organisms, including all animals. Dietary selenium comes from nuts, cereals, and mushrooms. Brazil nuts are the richest dietary source . Selenium is an ingredient in many multivitamins and other dietary supplements. It is a component of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase, which indirectly reduce certain oxidized molecules in animals and some plants. It is also found in three deiodinase enzymes, which convert one thyroid hormone to another. In living systems, selenium is found in the amino acids selenomethionine, selenocysteine, and methylselenocysteine.
The U.S. recommended dietary allowance for teenagers and adults is 55 µg/day. Selenium as a dietary supplement is available in many forms, including multi-vitamins/mineral supplements, which typically contain 55 or 70 µg/serving. Selenium-specific supplements typically contain either 100 or 200 µg/serving. In June 2015, the U.S. FDA published its final rule establishing the requirement of minimum and maximum levels of selenium in infant formula. The reference values of EFSA for selenium range from 15 µg/day for children aged one to three years to 70 µg/day for adolescents aged 1517 years . The selenium content in the human body is believed to be in the range of 1320 milligram .
So How You Can Support Glutathione Recycling
The first thing is to reduce the stressors depleting this vital system. This includes a pro-inflammatory diet, chronic stress, lack of sleep, smoking and an effective thyroid treatment. When we are healthy, we maintain sufficient levels of glutathione from dietary sources and our bodies make enough glutathione to protect us by producing, recycling or reusing it.
Second, support glutathione recycling pathways with supplements. There are some botanicals and nutritional compounds researchers have found to be helpful in raising glutathione levels.
However, there is a new premium form of glutathione called Setria® Glutathione that has been shown to double the activity of cells called natural killer cells, that help support your immune system.
Plus it helps to boost your bodys natural defenses against viruses and infection.
It works even better with turmeric in form of CurcuWIN® Turmeric I just mentioned before and 3 other immune-supporting ingredients that when combined together, can be far superior when used alone and provide additional benefits for your thyroid health, especially when you already have hypothyroidism and Hashimotos disease.

Thyroid Supplement For Weight Loss
The thyroid gland helps regulate the bodys metabolism and as such can affect your weight. Although supplemental thyroid hormone may help with unwanted weight gain caused by thyroid dysfunction, synthetic thyroid hormone is a prescription medication that should only be taken by people with a documented thyroid problem. Certain vitamins and minerals may also help maintain thyroid health, but their benefits for weight loss are unproven. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about thyroid disease and before taking any sort of supplement.
How Thyroid Hormone Conversion Works
The pituitary gland, found in your brain, signals to the thyroid how much hormone to produce. This thyroid hormone is what is known as T4, but your body needs to convert T4 into T3, which is the active form of the hormone, Dr. Jamie says. This active version of the hormone is needed in order for your body to be able to use it.
When the conversion from T4 to T3 is poor, or if you dont have proper levels of vitamins and minerals that enhance or help that conversion process, your body can make enough T3. Thats where pesky symptoms come in.

Iron Supplements And Thyroid Medication
Getting sufficient amounts of iron is crucial for several reasons. Most importantly, it plays a vital role in the transportation of oxygen throughout the body. Think about the effects of an oxygen-starved brain. Feeling tired, dizzy, cold, and getting headaches can be symptoms of anemia, an iron deficiency.
Those suffering fromHashimotos disease, an autoimmune disorder that can cause hypothyroidism, have to be careful that they are getting enough iron. This is because iron is not only crucial to getting oxygen where it needs to go, but iron is also essential to a functioning thyroid.
However, like calcium, iron can interfere with the bodys ability to absorb thyroid medication. And similar to calcium, there are different types of iron. Some are harder on the digestive system than others and can cause constipation.
Only a doctor can tell you to take an iron supplement, but if you do need to supplement your iron intake, as many with hypothyroidism do, choose a plant-based iron supplement. A non-heme iron supplement can be taken twice daily along with vitamin C to enhance absorption.
Measuring Thyroid Hormone And Nutrient Levels
At Parsley Health, doctors are trained in holistic medicine and conventional medicine to give you a wider scope of the problems youre dealing withand it starts with a thyroid test.
In conventional medicine, when your primary care doctor screens for thyroid function, they often just look at one main lab value called your thyroid-stimulating hormone, otherwise known as your TSH, explains Jamie Kyei-Frimpong, DNP, FNP-BC, a nurse practitioner at Parsley Health New York. But that doesnt give the overall picture of your thyroid health, says Dr. Jamie. Your doctor should also be assessing the conversion of other thyroid hormones and your nutrient levels of certain vitamins and minerals that impact that thyroid hormones and conversion.
Without looking at these key measures, its common to hear from your doctor that your thyroid is fine, even if you still feel kind of wonky, Dr. Jamie explains.
Dr. Jamie explains that you can have normal TSH levels but have poor conversion, which could lead to symptoms of hypothyroidism, aka an underactive thyroid. When you have hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland doesnt make enough thyroid hormone to keep the body running normally, according to the American Thyroid Association. Understanding your own thyroid hormone conversion can help you determine the right thyroid vitamins and supplements for better thyroid health.

Keep An Eye On Iodine
Most people need about 150 micrograms of iodine per day . Thats enough for the thyroid to make hormones to regulate the bodys metabolic processes. Iodine naturally is in many of the foods we eat, and its added to others. The following are just some of the many foods that contain iodine:
- Breads and cereals
- Dairy products, such as milk, yogurt and cheese
- Egg yolks
- Fish, shrimp and other seafood
- Fruits and vegetables
- Iodized salt
Pregnant women require a higher daily intake of iodine about 220 micrograms daily. Most of us get enough iodine from the food we eat. But some over-the-counter thyroid supplements can contain hundreds or thousands of micrograms of iodine per dose. This can put a person well over the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements recommended maximum threshold of 1,100 micrograms of iodine per day for adults.
One source of iodine people often dont know about is kelp, also known as seaweed. Kelp can contain massive amounts of iodine. One gram of kelp can contain as much as 8,165 micrograms of iodine, which is more than seven times the maximum daily amount for an adult. Kelp often is used in various preparations of seafood, especially sushi. Its also a major source of iodine in various over-the-counter supplements.
- Anxiety, depression and forgetfulness
- Sensitivity to cold
- Weight gain
Dosage Instructions For Thyroid Supplements
While selecting a thyroid supplement for you, check the dosage instructions mentioned on the bottle. The dosage may vary from one brand to another. Sticking to the dosage instructions is the best way to avoid any damaging effects of high doses.
According to the National Institutes of Health, 150 mcg of Iodine and 55mcg of Selenium is the daily recommended dose for both men and women. Check if your thyroid supplement has a similar dosage of iodine and selenium.
Higher doses of herbal ingredients like Ashwagandha should be avoided. Hence, it is a good way to start the supplement in low doses and give time for the body to get used to the new dietary addition.
Summary: Follow the dosage instructions on the pack to avoid unwanted health problems and start from a low dose so that the body can get accustomed to the supplement.
