What About Thyroid Pills And Other Meds

You should also let several hours pass between taking thyroid pills and some ulcer medications, such as sucralfate or certain cholesterol-lowering drugs, including cholestyramine and colestipol .

It’s important to discuss all possible medication interactions with your HCP. Certain antibiotics, for example, could increase or decrease absorption of your thyroid medicine.

Essential Facts About Goitrogens And Diet

Of course, it’s best to talk with your healthcare provider about the specific servings of goitrogenic foods allowed for you. Generally speaking, though, a few servings a day is likely harmless.

Keep in mind that cruciferous vegetables are very nutritious food choices, so avoiding them completely is not ideal. One consideration is to cook these delicious vegetables, as heat eliminates most goitrogenic activity.

Soy is another goitrogenic food, but soy consumption is a somewhat controversial issue within the medical community. There is scant medical evidence that soy has health benefits, and it may be detrimental to thyroid function, especially supplements that contain high doses of soy.

It’s best to discuss the consumption of soy with your personal healthcare provider, but until that discussion, avoiding high amounts of soy is your best bet.

Desiccated Thyroid Is Not Always Better

Some alternative health advocates recommend desiccated thyroid instead of the conventional LT4 drug because its natural.

Aside from the huge flaws in assuming natural is always better than artificial, the problem is that desiccated thyroid contains a mix of T4 + T3 hormones. Trials using a mix of T4 + T3 have found it is, at best, equally as effective as LT4 treatment .

Combination treatment is typically used as a backup for those who do not respond favourably or feel unwell with regular LT4 treatment. To be fair, study participants tend to report better tolerance and preference of desiccated thyroid over LT4 .

Anecdotally, many desiccated thyroid users swear by it. For many it can treat symptoms effectively without the bad side effects of LT4. So desiccated thyroid has its place as an alternate treatment, but its certainly not better than conventional.

Supplements like desiccated thyroid are also not tightly regulated for dose or quality. Even though they are FDA regulated, supplements arent subject to the same strict safety and effectiveness requirements that drugs are.

In fact, a study on thyroid support supplements found that half of brands contain a low range of T4, while 1 in 10 contained no T4 at all.

In other words, taking desiccated thyroid comes with more risk for potentially no extra benefit than standard LT4. You will need to do some trial and error with your doctor to find out what is best for you.

Watch Those Goitrogenic Foods

Certain foods, specifically cruciferous vegetables and products that have soy isoflavones, contain goitrogenic compounds chemicals that can interfere with thyroid hormones. A goiter is a swelling or enlargement of the thyroid, which can happen if the thyroid gland is functional and tries to grow more cells to keep up with the demand for hormones.

Because your thyroid is inactive, you donât have to worry about a goiter forming, but you still have to account for the effect of the goitrogenic compounds on your supplemental thyroid hormones especially because you cannot naturally make more hormones to compensate.

Goitrogenic compounds in vegetables are often deactivated by heating donât eat broccoli, cabbage or other cruciferous vegetables raw. Note that the goitrogenic effects of soy are lessened if the soy is fermented in products such as miso and tempeh.

Should People With Thyroid Problems Avoid These Supplements

Iodine: Yes. Avoid it as a supplement whether you havehyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. The effect of iodine supplements can vary byperson, causing the thyroid to produce either too much or too little hormone.

Certain alternativemedicine websites or doctors tell patients that iodine is good for yourthyroid, Dr. Nasr says, but if there is anybody who shouldnt take iodine, itis thyroid patients. Such claims aremade because iodine deficiency is the No. 1 cause of thyroid conditionsin the world, he says. But thats not true in the U.S., where we have iodine inour diets. Iodine is added to many foods, and not just salt, he says.

However, Dr. Nasr says that people on restrictive diets may consider adding a daily multivitamin that contains the recommended daily allowance of iodine.

He also assures patientsnot to worry that you are getting too much iodine from everyday foods. You wouldhave to eat a ton of it to cause problems, he says. Its not, dont eatanything with iodine. Its, dont eat a bunch of iodine. And patients shouldbe careful with iodine-concentrated supplements.

Foods With Soy Including Edamame Tofu And Miso

Theres long been concern over the potential negative effects that certain compounds in soy called isoflavones may have on the thyroid. Some researchers believe that too much soy may increase a person’s risk for hypothyroidism. A study published in March 2019 in Scientific Reports, however, found that soy has no effect on thyroid hormones and very modestly raises thyroid stimulating hormone levels.

So there are no specific dietary guidelines, but some research does suggest that consumption of soy may interfere with your ability to absorb thyroid medication. For that reason, you may want to wait four hours after eating soy-based foods before taking your regular dose. Check with your doctor to see whats best for you.

Diet Alone Cannot Cure Hypothyroidism

Food on its own cannot cure or independently treat a diagnosed case of hypothyroidism.

Hormone replacement therapy with prescription medication, such as LT4, is necessary to restore thyroid function. Thats why LT4 is absolutely essential for any health care system.

In saying that, if you have underlying nutrient deficiencies or food intolerance that remains untreated, LT4 becomes a bandaid that doesnt treat the root problem.

Its important to note that if you use LT4, take it before or well outside of meal times. Absorption of the T4 hormone is greatly reduced if consumed alongside food, especially soy, high-fibre foods and coffee .

This is because these starchy foods turn into sugar once broken down by the body .

Just make sure to clear any major dietary or supplemental changes with your doc. There are foods that may lower the effective dosage of thyroid medication when eaten within four to five hours of taking thyroid medication. These foods are those that are high in fiber, high in calcium, or high in iron, Morgan says.

Cauliflower And Soy Aren’t The Enemy

Eating large amounts of soy could reduce thyroid hormone production because it has antithyroid effects. But it’s important to understand that people who don’t have an iodine deficiency won’t develop hypothyroidism from eating soy. This issue, however, is uncommon since iodine has been added to soy-based formulas since the 1960s.

You may also think you should steer clear of biotin, a substance found in some supplements as well as in some hair and nail products. Unlike some medications that should be taken with meals, thyroid hormone pills should not be taken with food or supplements.

If possible, take the medication on an empty stomach, or an hour before eating. If you eat foods that are rich in iron, such as fiber or calcium, meats, lentils or broccoli, itâs best to wait at least two hours after you have taken the medication.

If you take calcium or iron supplements, make sure to wait several hours before taking the medication. The American Thyroid Association calls a 4-hour separation between medication and supplements âtraditional, but untested.â Make sure to speak with your health care provider before taking any dietary supplements.

Dont eat:

  • Any food when you take LT4 medication as this can inhibit absorption.
