What Kind Of Doctor Treats Thyroid Cancer

What Is The Thyroid Gland

What Are the Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment for Thyroid Cancer?

Your thyroid gland is one of many glands that make up your endocrine system. Endocrine glands release hormones that control different bodily functions.

The pituitary gland in your brain controls your thyroid gland and other endocrine glands. It releases thyroid-stimulating hormone . As the name suggests, TSH stimulates your thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone.

Your thyroid needs iodine, a mineral, to make these hormones. Iodine-rich foods include cod, tuna, dairy products, whole-grain bread and iodized salt.

It Might Be Difficult To Ascertain What Kind Of Health Practitioner Will Be Suitable For Dealing With Your Thyroid Issue

It is quite surprising that choosing the best doctor for thyroid treatment might not be an easy job to do. The process of finding the right doctor might be quite daunting and complicated. When thyroid problems are diagnosed easily, they can be handled by a general physician or medical practitioner. Regular blood tests need to be done to understand the levels of thyroid and the dosages of the medicine should be adjusted accordingly. In case the problem fails to come under control, the general physician might recommend visiting an endocrinologist for further check-up and investigation. You can also ask an endocrinologist online to get the second opinion or can consult online just by submitting all your medical reports.

What Do I Need To Know About Taking Thyroid Medications

Dr. Mandagere: For my patients who are already being treated for hypothyroidism, I emphasize the importance of taking their medication in a consistent manner. If a patient Im treating comes to me with elevated symptoms, we sometimes find that it doesnt necessarily mean that their thyroid is slowing down.

This is where, with my passion for, and background in biochemistry and nutrition, things really get interesting in terms of problem-solving with my patients.

We may find that their body is not absorbing the thyroid medication efficiently or that the metabolism of the medication has changed for one reason or another. We talk about a proper dosing routine that includes taking their medication the same time every day on an empty stomach. Its also important that their thyroid medication is separated by at least four hours from certain vitamins and minerals including calcium, iron and fiber and some cholesterol medications. We also discuss other prescriptions or supplements that might be impacting their thyroid medication.

I prefer prescribing Synthroid for my patients but, of course, the brand is more expensive so a lot people do opt for the generic and sometimes that means more monitoring and adjusting. Its also true that sometimes people just feel better on one medication than another, and it could have to do with various chemicals in the formulation, so its hard to say what will work best for every patient.

Signs Of Thyroid Cancer Include A Swelling Or Lump In The Neck

Thyroid cancer may not cause early signs or symptoms. It is sometimes found during a routine physical exam. Signs or symptoms may occur as the tumor gets bigger. Other conditions may cause the same signs or symptoms. Check with your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • A lump in the neck.
  • Trouble breathing.

What Happens During Radiation Treatment

Do You Need to See an Endocrinologist for Your Thyroid ...

Two types of radiation are used for thyroid cancer patients.

During I-131 treatment: You will swallow a capsule or pill that contains radioactive iodine . Both healthy and cancerous thyroid cells absorb the I-131, which destroys them. This treatment is usually given in a hospital. You may stay overnight. During the treatment and for a short period after, you will give off radiation. Your doctor will tell you how to protect your family, friends and pets at home. See the Radioactive Iodine Therapy page for more information.

External Beam Therapy : EBT begins with treatment planning using either x-rays or a computed tomography scan. These exams help plan the type and direction of radiation beams to treat the cancer. Each treatment will last a few minutes each day, although it may take longer to get you set up. Once the radiation starts, you will hear some electrical noise and see warning lights from the machine. Patients do not feel the radiation during treatment.

How Do You Find A Cancer Specialist

Usually, your primary care doctor will refer you to a cancer specialist. Many people rely on recommendations from friends and relatives, or on the reputation of a specific hospital or practice in their area. People also do searches for ratings on line now a days. Your insurance company may also have a specific list of providers that they will work with.

There are other ways to get the names of cancer specialists. You could call your local hospital and ask for the names of cancer specialists who are on staff. You could get the names of cancer specialists through different medical organizations, like the American Medical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Surgeons, or your local medical society. And you could contact top medical schools or cancer treatment centers in your state for references.

What Are The Best Thyroid Cancer Treatment Options

  • Thyroidectomy. Doctors apply this method to remove the affected thyroid gland. Such surgeries can be open and endoscopic . Depending on a cancer stage, a surgeon decides what type of operation is required.
  • Lymph nodes removals. If cancer has spread to lymph nodes, a surgical oncologist removes them partially or totally to prevent the relapse.

Radioiodine therapy. A radiologist prescribes this option after surgery, for relapsed cancer or when it spreads to lymph nodes or throughout the body.

Hormone therapy. Specialists use hormonal drugs to maintain the patients hormones levels after thyroid cancer surgery.

Chemotherapy. Chemo drugs stop cancer cells division and growth. Medical oncologist can prescribe chemotherapy for metastatic thyroid cancer to reduce its symptoms.

External beam radiation. A doctor applies such a therapy to destroy cancer cells or stop their growth with X-ray beams. This kind of radiation therapy is assigned to patients with medullary and anaplastic thyroid cancer. This is used for metastatic or recurrent cancer. This option can be used alone or combined with chemo drugs.

Targeted therapy. Such a therapy is used when other treatments are ineffective. Targeted drugs destroy cancer genes and proteins with no damage to healthy cells. Side effects are less severe in comparison with chemo.

Only an oncologist can decide what treatment methods will be effective for you. That depends on the cancer stage and overall health condition.

Experienced Care Makes Difference In Thyroid Cancer Treatment

Stephanie Bostock found a new outlet in painting after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer

Fayetteville artist Stephanie Bostock didnt know how advanced her thyroid cancer was when she was first diagnosed. But she knew she needed to find experienced doctors to treat her.

Perhaps it was her keen artist’s eye that led Bostock to notice the lump that had developed in her neck. I was looking at myself in the mirror, she said. Something seemed different. When her gynecologist noticed it too, he ordered an ultrasound, which indicated the lump was a large nodule on her thyroid gland.

Bostocks next stop was an ear, nose and throat specialist, who ordered a biopsy. He told her not to worry, since most thyroid nodules arent cancerous. He said hed only seen a handful of cases of cancerous thyroid nodules in his whole career, Bostock said.

When the biopsy revealed the nodule was thyroid cancer, the ENT wanted to operate immediately. Instead, Bostock recalled thinking, I have to see somebody who knows more about this.

Why Is It Essential To Visit An Endocrinologist For My Thyroid Problems

An endocrinologist is basically referred to a doctor who specializes in treating conditions of the endocrine system. Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine system which generally refers to a collection of glands that produce hormones which are used in the regulation of various day to day activities such as metabolism of the body, growth, reproduction and other sexual functions. Major endocrine glands include the pituitary glands, hypothalamus, thyroid gland, pancreas and reproductive glands like the testes in males and ovaries in females. There are several other glands like the parathyroid glands or the adrenal glands which are also part of the endocrine system.

Endocrinologists are normally concerned with treating people suffering from hormonal imbalances, generally of the endocrine glands. The primary objective of the treatment is to restore the proper functioning of the endocrine glands, thus restoring hormonal balances in the body.

Thyroid gland is an endocrine gland, located in the throat cavity which is concerned with secreting hormones that regulate your blood pressure, temperature of the body, body metabolism as well as heart rate.

When should you go to an endocrinologist?

Any sort of irregularities in functioning of the thyroid gland can give rise to a number of thyroid gland problems, since the hormones produced from the thyroid gland control several key functions in your body.

How Is Thyroid Cancer Managed Or Treated

How to Find the Best Thyroid Doctors

Treatments for thyroid cancer depend on the tumor size and whether the cancer has spread. Treatments include:

    • Surgery: Surgery is the most common treatment for thyroid cancer. Depending on the tumors size and location, your surgeon may remove part of the thyroid gland or all of the gland . Your surgeon also removes any nearby lymph nodes where cancer cells have spread.
    • Radioiodine therapy: With radioiodine therapy, you swallow a pill or liquid containing a higher dose of radioactive iodine than whats used in a diagnostic radioiodine scan. The radioiodine shrinks and destroys the diseased thyroid gland along with cancer cells. Dont be alarmed this treatment is very safe. Your thyroid gland absorbs almost all of the radioiodine. The rest of your body has minimal radiation exposure.
    • Radiation therapy: Radiation kills cancer cells and stops them from growing. External radiation therapy uses a machine to deliver strong beams of energy directly to the tumor site. Internal radiation therapy involves placing radioactive seeds in or around the tumor.
    • Chemotherapy: Intravenous or oral chemotherapy drugs kill cancer cells and stops cancer growth. Very few patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer will ever need chemotherapy.
    • Hormone therapy: This treatment blocks the release of hormones that can cause cancer to spread or come back.

    • Prisms: Spectacles containing prisms can help people with double vision.
    • Steroids: The inflammation in the eyes that causes them to swell can be reduced effectively by steroids. The most commonly used ones include hydrocortisone and prednisone.
    • Eyelid surgery: Surgery involves repositioning the bulging eyelids to allow them to close properly.

Online thyroid communities may also yield suggestions of doctors who treat thyroid disease in your area. People in these forums are often passionate about thyroid conditions and familiar with the physicians who are, too.

To broaden your search even further, consider referencing databases provided by professional organizations, which allow you to search by specialty and location:

If you have thyroid cancer, especially an uncommon type such as anaplastic thyroid cancer, you may need to travel to a larger cancer center to find a specialist who is considered a thyroid cancer expert.
