Q: Why Does My Wp Thyroid Or Nature
A: Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid are natural medications that use Thyroid USP, naturally derived thyroid hormones, as the active ingredient. Just like anything else from nature, batches of these medications will never be identical and may even differ in coloring, or “speckling”, and even in smell. These are only sensory differences and do not affect efficacy. Since WP Thyroid is uncoated and formulated with minimal pure ingredients, the tablets can change color by absorbing ambient humidity. If the tablets are stored in their original container and at room temperature 86° F with an ambient humidity of 10-65%, no discoloration occurs. However, exposed tablets outside of proper storage conditions still conform to USP specifications for both T4 and T3 potency and stability. You can find full Prescribing Information and ingredient lists for WP Thyroid and Nature-Throid on their respective pages. Please consult with your healthcare provider if you have any medical or health-related questions.
Differences In Manufacturing Quality And Effectiveness
There are important differences between these two types of therapies. For one, the FDA has approved medicines containing levothyroxine, but the agency has not approved medicines containing DTE. FDA-approved medicines must first undergo a rigorous evaluation of safety, quality, and effectiveness.
Another big difference is in the manufacturing process. Laboratory-made levothyroxine can be consistently manufactured to make sure each tablet contains the correct amount of thyroid hormones. This is important because the body is very sensitive to tiny variations in thyroid hormone levels. Just a little too much medication can cause bad side effects, and just a tad too little can be ineffective.
Manufacturing DTE from pig glands tends to be a more complex process, and may result in safety, effectiveness, and quality issues because of inconsistent and inaccurate doses. For example, pills made from the same batches at the same manufacturing facilities may not always have the same hormone levels. This inconsistent dosage can make people sick. It can also result in voluntary drug recalls.
Manufacturing and quality issues, drug recalls, and supply issues are common with medicines containing DTE. As a result, the FDA has received many inquiries and complaints about the supply of medicines containing DTE and problems with patients receiving too much or too little medication.

Active And Inactive Ingredients
NP Thyroid contains the same Thyroid USP active ingredient as all other natural desiccated thyroid brands. Thyroid USP is also the same active ingredient found in compounded natural thyroid. NP Thyroid has inactive ingredients that include calcium stearate, dextrose, and mineral oil. It is manufactured in tablets at a large scale, so measures need to be taken to ensure that the product is stable and reaches patients unaltered. Calcium stearate is a type of calcium that helps the tablets release from the mold they are made in. Dextrose is a simple sugar that helps counteract the distinct taste of the natural thyroid. Mineral oil can have several possible applications that it may be used for in this product.
What Is The Most Important Information I Should Know About Desiccated Thyroid
You may not be able to use this medicine if you have a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an adrenal gland problem that is not controlled by treatment.

Personalized Thyroid Replacement Therapy
Pharmacy Specialists can help patients and physicians design appropriate thyroid replacement therapy. We stock the pure chemical forms of desiccated thyroid , levothyroxine and liothyronine , so that we can create a custom blend of hormones at an ideal ratio to meet patients individual needs and maintain their hormone balance. Desiccated thyroid, levothyroxine or liothyronine can be compounded as single ingredient or combination capsules designed to release immediately or over a prolonged period of time. When we compound customized dosages, we have the ability to omit any problem-causing inactive ingredients such as corn, gluten, starch, soy or animal by-products and substitute with non-reactive fillers.
Adverse Reactions And Medication Ineffectiveness Due To Fillers
I have found that some of my clients experience sensitivities and adverse reactions to the many inactive ingredients or fillers found in their T4 medications. These are added as bulking agents used to stabilize the tablets, as coloring agents, as preservatives, or to aid in the manufacturing process in some way. Many have been shown to potentially cause adverse reactions, as well as affect the absorption rate and effectiveness of the very medication meant to help the thyroid.
Most generic levothyroxine products contain lactose and not all are gluten-free .
Can small amounts of these types of fillers really be problematic? Yes! Many people with Hashimotos have sensitivities to these ingredients no matter how small the exposure. In my 2015 survey of 2,232 readers, 57 percent of respondents said they reacted to or avoided all dairy, and over 75 percent avoided gluten due to sensitivities and reactions. Other fillers that are commonly found in T4 medications may include confectioners sugar , sucrose, talc, and dyes. Why would we want these inactive filler ingredients in our thyroid medication?
- You can look up the latest and greatest on medication fillers at glutenfreedrugs.com to ensure that your medications are gluten-free and free of fillers that may be reactive for you.
- Alternately, consider switching to Tirosint and Tirosint SOL these formulations have minimal fillers.

Tirosint Levothyroxine Gel Caps
Description: Tirosint is a newer thyroid medication that is a hypo-allergenic version of levothyroxine. I recently wrote an entire article focused on Tirosint. In my survey, 26 percent of respondents said they felt better taking Tirosint. Out of those that switched to Tirosint gel caps , 68 percent saw an improvement in their labs, 62 percent saw an improvement in energy levels, 32 percent an improvement in hair loss, and 50 percent saw an improvement in mood.
Because of how quickly and consistently Tirosint is absorbed, it has also been found to be a better option for people who have certain gastrointestinal challenges , who are taking antacids/acid blockers/PPIs, or who are otherwise experiencing low stomach acid.
Dose: Tirosint gel caps are available in 12 different dosage strengths, ranging from a 13 mcg dose to a 200 mcg dose. Because this medication is more readily absorbed than other forms of levothyroxine, some people may find that they require a smaller dosage of Tirosint to keep thyroid hormones within optimal range.
Just like with all T4 medications, the effectiveness of Tirosint may be impacted if a given individual is experiencing poor T4/T3 conversion. Here are some additional things to consider:

Nature Throid Vs Armour Thyroid Vs Np Thyroid
As mentioned above, the active ingredient is the same in Nature Throid, NP Thyroid and Armour thyroid. It is called dessicated Thyroid, which comes from pigs and cattle. However, there are differences in the inactive ingredients between Armour Thyroid, Nature Throid and NP Thyroid. For this reason, some patients may not do as well when switched from Nature-Throid or NP Thyroid to Armour Thyroid.
Why Levothyroxine May Not Adequately Treat Your Hypothyroidism
Many hypothyroid patients do not feel well on Levothyroxine and continue to experience the symptoms of underactive thyroid. Why? Levothyroxine contains only T4 which has to convert to T3 inside the body to be effective. As mentioned above, the conversion of T4 to T3 is interrupted by Hashimotos thyroiditis, stress, obesity, aging, diabetes, nutritional issues, beta-blockers and steroids. Thats why many patients do not have optimal levels of T3 in their body and continue to suffer from hypothyroidism.

So What Do You Do Now If You Had Returned To Using Np Thyroid Since It Came Back Out Again
Still to this day for what appears to be the majority of hypothyroid patients, Armour desiccated thyroid is working . So is using synthetic T4 with synthetic T3. Examples of the two synthetics are Tirosint for T4, with Cytomel or Sigma Pharm for T3. Honestly, all the brands have worked.
BUT.we as patient learned that to make either work correctly, we have to have the following:1) The right amount of cortisol, otherwise we get hyper-like symptoms when raising. You can read this page to see clues that you might not have the right amount of cortisol. i.e. some levels being too low, others too high. All can cause hyperlike symptoms when raising a product with T3 in it. Its the results of pooling. 2) The right amount of iron levels, otherwise we get rising RT3 , an inactive hormone which can block us from achieving the right amount of T3. 3) Optimal free T4 and optimal free T3. Optimal is NOT midrange. Optimal is not below midrange. Optimal is not just slightly above midrange. Read the page on optimal.
Strict Adherence Required For Consistent Absorption And Effectiveness
Studies have found that many people dont adhere to thyroid medication usage guidelines. They wont take it on an empty stomach , and theyll take it with their morning coffee or their acid reflux medication, without the required wait time. All of this can impact their medications absorption and its effectiveness. If adherence is an issue for you, the best T4 medication might be the hypoallergenic T4 medication, Tirosint, which Ill talk about in a moment.
I am always a bit dismayed to hear from people that they did not know about the impact on their medications effectiveness by not following these basic guidelines, but research has found that ingesting food with T4 medication decreases its absorption from approximately 80 percent to 40 percent. Coffee impacts absorption, too. Its all about the gastric pH level and how foods, drinks and medications reduce the acid levels within the gastrointestinal system. Without this acidity, tablets take longer to break down, and there are direct effects on absorption that occur.
Thyroid medications have a narrow therapeutic index, meaning that they are goldilocks hormones, and careful dose titration is needed to get things just right. Doses that are incorrect by just a tiny amount can result in symptoms from over-treatment or under-treatment. So the above issues can all result in ineffective thyroid treatment.
In order to overcome the absorption issues, I recommend the following:

Levothyroxine Vs Natural Desiccated Thyroid: What Is Right For You
Let’s take a quick trip back in history to the late 1800s. It was a time when hypothyroidism was, for some patients, a fatal and untreatable condition. Those who survived still lived a life of fatigue, depression, weight gain, and dulled thinking and concentration.
That’s why it was so groundbreaking when in 1981, Dr. George Redmayne Murray began using an extract from the thyroid glands of sheep to treat the most severe cases of hypothyroidism successfully. Dr. Murray’s lifesaving discovery eventually evolved into natural desiccated thyroid drugs. NDT, made from the desiccated thyroid glands of pigs, is still in use today as one treatment option for hypothyroidism. In the United States, the NDT brands available include Armour Thyroid, Nature-throid, WP Thyroid, and NP Thyroid.
Levothyroxine didn’t come on the scene until the middle of the twentieth century. This synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine was touted as the modern treatment for hypothyroidism, casting NDT as old-fashioned and out-of-date. We currently have several levothyroxine brands available in the US, including Synthroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid, and Euthyrox tablets several generic manufacturers of tablets and Tirosint gel capsules and Tirosint-SOL oral solution.
Ahead, a look at why some doctors don’t support treatment with NDT.
Symptoms Or Thyroid Hormone Medication Side Effects
I put symptoms and side effects for all thyroid medications in the same category. This is because side effects of most thyroid hormones are primarily due to overmedication or inadequate doses of medication. That said, some individuals can have additional reactions to the fillers in the various medications.
Overmedication can cause hyperthyroidism due to therapeutic overdose. The cardiovascular and central nervous system effects are particularly serious. Its important when starting medications that you report all symptoms and have your labs repeated every four to eight weeks, or more often, if you have any of the above symptoms.
When not enough hormone is provided, people may continue to experience symptoms of hypothyroidism such as heavy menses, hair loss, dry skin, loss of eyebrow hair, infertility, constipation, slowed digestion, joint pain, depression, brain fog, fatigue, weight gain, and even miscarriages.

Which Thyroid Medication Is Best
NP Thyroid is a form of natural desiccated thyroid hormone which is similar but different than Armour thyroid. Both medications contain the same active ingredients but they differ in the inactive ingredients. Armour thyroid contains the following ingredients: Triiodothyronine active ingredient Thyroxine active ingredient Calcium stearate Dextrose Microcrystalline cellulose May cause reactions in some people Sodium starch glycolate Opadry white Minor amounts of calcitonin, T1, T2, and proteins. NP thyroid contains the following ingredients: Triiodothyronine active ingredient Thyroxine active ingredient Calcium stearate Dextrose monohydrate Maltodextrin Mineral oil Minor amounts of calcitonin, T1, T2, and proteins. You can see from the list that NP thyroid has slightly fewer ingredients and may be better tolerated for some people.
Drug Information on Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid, NP Thyroid includes drug pictures, side effects, drug interactions, directions for use.
How Long Will It Be Until Ndt Is Readily Available
What if you were taking these medications and previously doing well on them?
What does this mean for you in terms of how long you will have to wait to get them back in active stock?
Unfortunately, when mass recalls like this happen it tends to take quite a while for the stock to be replenished and for everyone to get back on their previous doses.
These sorts of recalls tend to create large shortages in many pharmacies, especially for other brands of NDT .
Let’s say you were doing really well on 1.5 grains of Nature-throid and you had your symptoms under control.
You are now told that you can no longer get Nature-throid so you look for an alternative.
Because NP thyroid isn’t available, you have to switch to Armour thyroid.
But you aren’t the only one.
There are people who were previously on NP thyroid, Nature-throid, and WP thyroid who are now suddenly all trying to switch to Armour thyroid.
This creates a huge demand for Armour thyroid and puts it at risk for going on backorder simply due to the demand.
And this also happens with various dosages of different brands of NDT as well.
Think of it like the toilet paper debacle of 2020.
Even though toiler paper companies were pumping out toiler paper like crazy, it still took them several months to actually catch up to the demand.
A similar thing may happen with other brands of NDT so be wary of that.

What Should I Discuss With My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Desiccated Thyroid
Since thyroid hormone occurs naturally in the body, almost anyone can take desiccated thyroid. However, you may not be able to use this medication if you have a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an adrenal gland problem that is not controlled by treatment.
To make sure desiccated thyroid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- any type of diabetes or
- problems with your adrenal gland.
Small amounts of desiccated thyroid can pass into breast milk, but this is not expected to harm a nursing baby. However, do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Choice No : Switch To Levothyroxine And Cytomel
Some patients prefer synthetic thyroid hormones. Synthetic T4 is available as Levothyroxine with the brand names of Synthroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid.
Synthetic T3 is available as Liothyronine with the brand name of Cytomel.
A combination of Levothyroxine and Liothyronine can be used as an alternative to Nature Throid or NP Thyroid or WP Thyroid.
The combination of Levothyroxine and Liothyronine works well to substitute for Nature-Throid or NP Thyroid or WP Thyroid as long the physician prescribes the correct amounts of these medications.
Often physicians prescribe too little of T3 and too much of T4 . And it does not work well. Then, the physician and the patient think that the combination of T4 and T3 does not work for them.
