What Is The Difference Between Np Thyroid And Armour Thyroid

How Should I Take It

NP Thyroid vs Armour Thyroid: Cost & Ingredient Differences

Armour Thyroid is typically taken orally once daily. The dosage requirements are usually individualized based on patient needs. Dosage is usually low at the beginning of treatment so that your body can become accustomed to it.

If youve accidentally missed a pill, do not take two pills at once. Just continue with your medication normally.

Active And Inactive Ingredients

NP Thyroid contains the same Thyroid USP active ingredient as all other natural desiccated thyroid brands. Thyroid USP is also the same active ingredient found in compounded natural thyroid. NP Thyroid has inactive ingredients that include calcium stearate, dextrose, and mineral oil. It is manufactured in tablets at a large scale, so measures need to be taken to ensure that the product is stable and reaches patients unaltered. Calcium stearate is a type of calcium that helps the tablets release from the mold they are made in. Dextrose is a simple sugar that helps counteract the distinct taste of the natural thyroid. Mineral oil can have several possible applications that it may be used for in this product.

Levothyroxine Vs Natural Desiccated Thyroid: What Is Right For You

Let’s take a quick trip back in history to the late 1800s. It was a time when hypothyroidism was, for some patients, a fatal and untreatable condition. Those who survived still lived a life of fatigue, depression, weight gain, and dulled thinking and concentration.

That’s why it was so groundbreaking when in 1981, Dr. George Redmayne Murray began using an extract from the thyroid glands of sheep to treat the most severe cases of hypothyroidism successfully. Dr. Murray’s lifesaving discovery eventually evolved into natural desiccated thyroid drugs. NDT, made from the desiccated thyroid glands of pigs, is still in use today as one treatment option for hypothyroidism. In the United States, the NDT brands available include Armour Thyroid, Nature-throid, WP Thyroid, and NP Thyroid.

Levothyroxine didn’t come on the scene until the middle of the twentieth century. This synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine was touted as the modern treatment for hypothyroidism, casting NDT as old-fashioned and out-of-date. We currently have several levothyroxine brands available in the US, including Synthroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid, and Euthyrox tablets; several generic manufacturers of tablets; and Tirosint gel capsules and Tirosint-SOL oral solution.

Ahead, a look at why some doctors don’t support treatment with NDT.

Conversion From Nature Throid Or Np Thyroid To Levothyroxine And Cytomel Combination

NP Thyroid vs Armour Thyroid: Whats the Difference ...

The ratio of; T4:T3 is approximately 4:1 in Nature-Throid, NP Thyroid, and Armour Thyroid.

For example, if you were on 65 mg per day of Nature- Throid or 60 mg of NP Thyroid you were getting about 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3. Unfortunately, Levothyroxine and Cytomel are not available in these doses. The closest dose of Levothyroxine would be 25 mcg, which you may take as 1-1/2 tablet a day which will give you 37.5 mcg of T4.

Cytomel is available as 5 mcg tablet. You may take two tablets of Cytomel a day which will give you 10 mcg of T3.

Which Works Better For Hypothyroidism

There is not much data to compare the two head to head.;

In one study of 70 people with primary hypothyroidism, researchers started patients on either Armour Thyroid or levothyroxine for 16 weeks. They then switched patients to the other medication for another 16 weeks. At the end of 32 weeks total, they looked at things like symptoms and quality of life. They concluded that there were no significant differences in symptoms or quality of life reported in either group. More patients preferred Armour Thyroid versus levothyroxine but 23 did not have a preference.;

Medications To Balance Thyroid Hormones

Choosing the best medications starts with an understanding of our symptoms and labs.

While our symptoms can provide a clue that something is off, our labs can tell us if the reason were feeling unwell could be due to our medications. Labs will provide information on whether we are absorbing our medications, whether we are on a correct dose of medications, as well as whether our body has issues converting T4 to T3 .

All too often, conventional doctors simply test ones TSH and T4 levels . However, TSH is a pituitary hormone, and doesnt tell us what level of hormones we have available to use within the rest of the body.

For this reason, its important to have a full thyroid panel done, which will also help you and your practitioner determine the appropriate medication for you.

A full thyroid panel checks ones TSH, free T4, free T3, and thyroid antibody levels.

  • TSH: The thyroid stimulating hormone, or TSH test, is used as a screening test for thyroid disease, as well as a test for monitoring the correct dose of medication needed for an individual. TSH is elevated in cases of hypothyroidism. While conventional practitioners may have lax reference ranges, functional medicine practitioners have further defined the optimal reference range in which most patients will feel their best.
  • Recommended test:TSH
  • Optimal reference range: between 0.5-2 IU/mL

Symptoms Or Thyroid Hormone Medication Side Effects

I put symptoms and side effects for all thyroid medications in the same category. This is because side effects of most thyroid hormones are primarily due to overmedication or inadequate doses of medication. That said, some individuals can have additional reactions to the fillers in the various medications.

Overmedication can cause hyperthyroidism due to therapeutic overdose. The cardiovascular and central nervous system effects are particularly serious. Its important when starting medications that you report all symptoms and have your labs repeated every four to eight weeks, or more often, if you have any of the above symptoms.

When not enough hormone is provided, people may continue to experience symptoms of hypothyroidism such as heavy menses, hair loss, dry skin, loss of eyebrow hair, infertility, constipation, slowed digestion, joint pain, depression, brain fog, fatigue, weight gain, and even miscarriages.

Armour thyroid is often considered superior and more powerful than those medications because it contains both T4 and T3 .

When you take Armour thyroid , you should see your TSH drop, your free T4 increase and your Free T3 increase as well. This pattern doesnt always hold true, however. Some individuals will find that their TSH will drop, their T4 will drop and their free T3 will increase.

What Are Examples Of Synthetic Thyroid Hormone

Synthetic L-thyroxine, or , is a form of the T4 thyroid hormone. After you take it, your body turns some of it into T3. The FDA has approved levothyroxine for the treatment of hypothyroidism. It is the most commonly prescribed form of thyroid replacement, largely because it has the most data to support its use.

There are several formulations of levothyroxine, but some brand names include Synthroid, Levoxyl, and Levo-T.

This Is How Synthroid And Armour Thyroid Differ

1. Synthroid is bio-identical to human T4 hormone. Armour is derived from pigs, then purified, so it is not bio-identical to human thyroid hormone.

2. Synthroid is not derived from animals, its made in a laboratory. Armour is animal-derived and purified in a laboratory. More specifically, Armour is known as an NDT medication, short for Natural Desiccated Thyroid, and it is porcine-derived from the thyroid glands of pigs.

3. Synthroid contains T4 only, whereas Armour contains both T4 and T3 . T3 is more biologically active than T4.

4. Synthroids actions may take a few hours, whereas Armour Thyroid will begin to work within an hour. What you should feel is more energy, some warmth if you are frequently cold, and more mental clarity. Your heart rate may increase a bit, but not to an uncomfortable level.

5. While possible, its unusual that Synthroid triggers an autoimmune response in a person with Hashimotos thyroiditis. Sometimes for people with Hashimotos their bodies see the porcine-derived thyroid hormone and launch an attack against that because it is glandular. While rare, this explains why some of you with Hashimotos might feel a little better on Synthroid or a synthetic combo of T4 and T3 . Its very individual of course. This is not a blanket statement, merely a consideration if you have Hashimotos and you feel worse on NDT drugs.

Synthroid- Inactive ingredients include acacia, confectioners sugar , lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, povidone, and talc.

How Does Np Thyroid Compare To Nature

21 Feb 2019 by GMc
nature-throid, underactive thyroid, thyroid disease, hashimoto’s disease, hypothyroidism, thyroid, np thyroid, wp thyroid

I have taken Nature-throid for years, but it is on backorder, and my last refill was with WP Thyroid which is made by RLC labs, and so is Nature-Throid made by RLC. I can’t say that I am satisfied with the results of WP Thyroid. I have read that both of them, the new “reformulated” versions, are disappointing, less effective, and with unwanted side effects. Both have been on backorder and will take a while to be available at pharmacies again. My pharmacist suggested talking to my doctor about writing me a prescription for NP Thyroid. It is cheaper and she said this would be a good time to try it and compare it to the other two which I have taken. Has anyone had a good experience with NP Thyroid? Do you have more or less side effects with it?

About Natural Desiccated Thyroid

Natural desiccated thyroid also known as thyroid extract, natural thyroid, and porcine thyroid is a thyroid hormone replacement drug used to treat hypothyroidism. The brand names in the United States include Nature-throid, WP Thyroid, and Armour Thyroid. A generic NDT, NP Thyroid, is also available here. NDT is made from the desiccated thyroid gland of pigs. It contains thyroxine , triiodothyronine , and other thyroid hormones including T1, T2, and calcitonin.

Noted endocrinologist Wilmar Wiersinga, M.D., has written that hypothyroidism was an untreatable condition until the early 1890s, when patients started getting injections of thyroid extract derived from sheep. After that time, tablets were made from sheep thyroid as a treatment for hypothyroidism.

Eventually, NDT was introduced in the early 1900s as the sole hypothyroidism treatment on the market and has been available by prescription since that time. It is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administrative , but because it was on the market before the creation of the FDA, the drug has not gone through the formal new drug approval process and was instead grandfathered by the FDA.

It’s Not The Only Ndt Formulation

Armour thyroid is one of the oldest drugs available to treat hypothyroidism.;

It has fallen out of favor but because it’s so old many physicians are aware that it exists.;

And, believe it or not, this plays a big role in why so many people are taking it.;

Many physicians are simply not aware of the newer medications such as Tirosint and Tirosint-Sol .;

It’s very possible, and perhaps probable, that your doctor is really only aware of a handful of thyroid medications.;

These may include medications such as Synthroid, levothyroxine, and perhaps Armour thyroid.;

If Armour thyroid is the only formulation of NDT that your doctor is aware of then it’s probably the first thing that he/she will put you on if you don’t do well on Synthroid/levothyroxine.;

This may be fine for some of you, but I want you to at least be aware of the other formulations as well.;

Because these formulations can be used in instances where you may not respond to Armour thyroid.;

Due to reasons such as inactive binders/fillers, you may not respond to Armour thyroid and it may actually make your symptoms worse.;

But, even if this does happen it doesn’t mean that you need to avoid all formulations of NDT!

In fact, simply switching to another formulation of NDT may be enough to resolve your symptoms.;

Before you jump off the NDT bandwagon be sure to at least check out these other formulations.;

Other formulations of NDT include:

Can You Take Armour Thyroid If You Have Adrenal Gland Problems

Important Information. You may not be able to use Armour Thyroid if you have a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an adrenal gland problem that is not controlled by treatment.

Armour thyroid contains 2 active ingredients and 5 inactive ingredients. The two inactive ingredients that may cause issues for most people include the starch and microcrystalline cellulose. These can be difficult to digest in some individuals, especially if they suffer from low stomach acid or other digestive issues.

Choice No : Armour Thyroid

Armour thyroid is a good substitute for Nature Throid or NP thyroid.;The active ingredient of Armour Thyroid is dessicated Thyroid, which is the same ingredient in Nature Throid and NP Thyroid. In other words, Nature Throid, Armour Thyroid, and NP Thyroid are various brand names of dessicated Thyroid.

Over the years, I have used; dessicated Thyroid in most of my hypothyroid patients. I have found all the brands of dessicated Thyroid; to work well, although there is a marked difference in their prices Armour Thyroid being the most expensive one.
