Is Your Thyroid Holding Your Health Hostage These 7 Herbs Support Thyroid Health Naturally
Although more women than ever before are coming into my office at least somewhat aware that imbalances in their thyroid might be at the root of symptoms that are making their lives impossible to enjoy, they often have no idea what to do about it.
Conventional practitioners are often quick to reach for a prescription pad to deal with thyroid problems without even trying more gentle, natural approaches. But the women who come to see me are aware that prescriptions arent always the answer and they certainly shouldnt be the first course of action. Once you begin taking a prescription, it can be exceedingly difficult to stop. And it is possible to support your thyroid and begin healing naturally, if you have the right information.
Of course, every body responds to treatment differently, and Im not suggesting that women with thyroid diseases should not consider prescriptions that can protect their health and bring relief. What Im saying is that there are natural remedies and lifestyle changes that can help facilitate healing your thyroid before you get to that point of no return.
Top Herbs For Hashimotos
Medically reviewed and written by Izabella Wentz, PharmD, FASCP on July 14, 2021
As a pharmacist, Ive seen how prescription medications for chronic conditions can often come up short in fully resolving symptoms and in making people feel better. This can be particularly true with Hashimotos. Most people will experience multiple triggers that continue to cause both symptoms and ongoing thyroid damage, even when taking prescribed thyroid medications.
Through my own trial and error investigations over the years, I have experienced firsthand the profound effect that many supplemental interventions can have on healing the human body.
Near the beginning of my own Hashimotos journey, after experiencing continued symptoms despite taking thyroid hormone medications, two of the complementary approaches that I eventually tried were acupuncture and immune-balancing herbal therapies, as recommended by my acupuncturist. I was surprised and thrilled by the results. My TPO antibodies at the time fell from the 2,000 IU/mL range to the mid-300s.
Since then, Ive seen the beneficial effects of a wide variety of herbal therapies, with many clients and readers. Today, I want to share some of my favorites with you. These herbs specifically address common triggers for Hashimotos, and research shows that they can improve thyroid hormone levels and overall thyroid health as well.

Which Herbs Are Bad For The Thyroid
Your metabolism is controlled by the action of your thyroid gland and thyroid hormones, which regulate how fast or slow your other body organs work. When your thyroid gland is overactive, it produces too much thyroid hormone, which results in symptoms of hyperthyroidism, or Grave’s disease. When your thyroid is sluggish, not enough thyroid hormone is produced, resulting in hypothyroidism. Certain herbs can affect your thyroid gland and hormones. Some are beneficial for hyperthyroidism but can worsen the symptoms of hypothyroidism, and vice versa. Never take any herbs that affect thyroid function without consulting your physician.

Did you know that:
Being told it is all in your head and feeling like you are not living up to your potential can wreak havoc on your sense of well-being and many clients come to me feeling depressed and hopeless because they know something is wrong yet no one believes them.
To manage autoimmune thyroid disease or any autoimmune condition, its imperative to get to the root issue an overactive, hypervigilant immune system- not simply suppress symptoms with medication. Im not against thyroid hormone replacement, but its often a faulty strategy. The obvious shortcomings of just medicating symptoms are that it doesnt address the underlying cause of the problem which is the immune system attacking the thyroid gland. If the underlying cause isnt addressed, the treatment is not going to work very well or for very long.
Turmeric In Thyroid Anti
Most folks approach turmeric as if it were medicinal chocolate: When the urge strikes, eat it, and consequently feel good about what youre doing for your body. The problem with this thinking is that turmeric does not work that way. Chris Kresser explains that, the curcuminoids in turmeric are not very well absorbed.
Ive written at greater length about turmeric here. But the gist of it is this: Very small amounts of turmeric on a regular basis may have an effect on inflammation. Thats why many in India see the benefit. Theres just a little turmeric in most of their foods. But the best research shows it to be ineffective for inflammation in large amounts or with irregular consumption.
I therefore consider it an optional ingredient in this tea. If youre going to drink the tea regularly, and also put a teeny bit of turmeric in lots of your other foods, then it may have a benefit.
Curcumin supplements like this one, with the right co-factors, are more reliable for those who dont consume turmeric often.
Quoted from my article on the topic,
Of course turmeric is beautiful a key ingredient in Golden Milk. Its part of what gives the tea its exotic visual appeal. I like the flavor, too. However, notice that I do not add a lot. Just a little. And then a little in lots of cooking additionally is how to derive the benefit.

Essential Fatty Acids In Thyroid Anti
Essential fatty acids help to reduce inflammation. We add MCT oil to this tea recipe because it yields big energy! I love this ingredient and a few years ago started using it daily for my family.
MCTs are medium-chain triglycerides a unique kind of saturated fat often missing from our diets. MCTs are easy to digest and are never stored as fat! Theyre sent by our bodies straight to the liver where theyre converted into energy both brain and body energy.
MCTs also increase the metabolism and help to reduce weight gain thats often associated with thyroid issues. MCTs are excellent news for those who dont have a gall bladder, because they dont require bile for digestion.
When blended into this tea recipe, MCT oil creates the bulletproof texture: creamy and light, yet rich.

Herbal Tea For Hypothyroid
Hypothyroid is the most popular form of thyroid disease and millions of people are suffering with debilitating symptoms .
The interesting thing is that hypothyroidism is not an incurable condition. It certainly can be uncomfortable, but it is not incurable.
There are many things you can do to help alleviate some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism, and one of my favorite things is to start enjoying a daily herbal tea. Its simple and easy and can support your body to help feel a little bit better.
Below are the ingredients in this tea and why I think they are essential to improving thyroid health.
Gotu Kola : member of the parsley family that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to enhance cognitive performance and circulation. Many hypothyroid folks often complain of foggy memory and poor circulation. If you have trouble with blood sugar, I would swap out this Gotu Kola for Nettles Leaf instead.
Red Clover : this pretty little pea flower pops up all summer long and has been used as a lymph moving herb, natural diuretic, and supports liver cleansing and blood purification. Often times, if the liver is congested, the conversion of T4 to T3 is compromised, contributing to a sluggish thyroid.
Of course there are many more thyroid supportive herbs that can be used in this daily tea, but three good ones is a great place to start.
Drink 2-3 cups daily for best results.

Natural Strategies To Maximize Thyroid Function

In my post last week, I introduced the topic of thyroid health and the many misconceptions that the medical profession has about diagnosing and treating thyroid disease. In general, thyroid problems are under diagnosed because the standard blood tests used to evaluate function are woefully inadequate. At the same time, an underactive thyroid is often over treated with thyroid replacement hormoneswhich frequently cause even greater dysfunction. In my experience, a much more effective approach is to focus on the factors that underlie the dysfunction, providing the support needed to restore balance and function to an endocrine system that has gone awry.
Unfortunately, conventional modern medicine insists on viewing the thyroid as an independent entity, and treats any dysfunction by addressing only the thyroid. But in fact, the thyroid sits at the epicenter of the endocrine system and oversees the critical job of regulating the bodys metabolism. Although the thyroid gland weighs less than one ounce, the hormones it produces affect virtually every cell in the body.

Saffron In Thyroid Anti
If you leave the turmeric out, a beautiful alternative for Golden Milks is to use saffron threads. Theyre even more exotic, being the filaments from the crocus flower, native to the Middle East. I love using these delicate strands. Saffron is indeed medicinal and creates a similarly colored steamer. Saffron improves circulation and balances hormones. This alternative is given below in the recipe.

But This Is Not The End Of The Story
While all of these herbs have traditionally been used in hypothyroid, they are typically not enough. Serious long-term effects can result from attempting to treat your hypothyroid condition with herbals alone. Negative effects from not properly treating hypoythroid conditions include elevations in cholesterol and lipids, 3,6 decreased fertility,7 and poor gastrointestinal health. Elevations in TSH can promote unwanted growth of the thyroid gland which is exceedingly important to take into consideration for patients with a history of nodules or thyroid cancer.8 Regular thyroid labs and imaging completed by your healthcare professional are important for the diagnosis and management of hypothyroidism. For more info on how to test your thyroid please check out this article about which labs should be run.
It is also critical to find the root cause of your hypothyroid before starting any natural treatments. Depending on the cause of your sluggish thyroid, herbal products may not be indicated and could cause more harm. Talking with your doctor before starting natural treatments is important.

A Brief Discussion Of How Your Thyroid Works
Before you can properly support your thyroid, you should know where it is and what it does. The thyroid is a small, butterfly shaped gland in the front of your neck. Its most basic function is to convert iodine from food into two thyroid hormones: Thyroxine and Triiodothyronine . Your thyroid is responsible for regulating metabolism in your body.
Your pituitary gland, located just below the brain, determines levels of T3 and T4 hormones, then prompts thyroid stimulating hormone to either increase or decrease production of each to reach an optimal balance. And where does TSH come from? Well, this is regulated by another master gland your hypothalamus. None of these systems work in isolation, so its important that they are all functioning to their best ability which is why supporting your thyroid is so critical.
Causes Of Hyperthyroid Disease
There are three main causes of hyperthyroidism:
No matter the cause, its very important to get hyperthyroidism under control. As excessive thyroid activity can lead to heart damage and a life-threatening thyroid storm, we want to utilize effective treatment approaches that not only decrease the effects of excessive thyroid hormone, but, if possible, address the root causes for hyperthyroidism in the first place [14
