Things You Should Know If You Have A Thyroidectomy
Ive treated hundreds of thyroid patients in my clinical practice and Ive run into many patients without a thyroid.
These patients are certainly more difficult to treat than run of the mill thyroid patients but Ive learned much in my years of treating them.
While they are more difficult, its still possible to help them lose weight and feel better.
It just takes the right approach
With that in mind, here are 5 things that I think you should know if youve had your thyroid removed based on THIS experience.
#1. You are now HYPOTHYROID.
This is probably the single most important thing that you understand if your thyroid has been removed.
Once your thyroid is removed you are now considered to be HYPOTHYROID.
It doesnt matter WHY your thyroid was removed, once it is removed you now have a sluggish thyroid.
I dont care if your thyroid was removed because you WERE hyperthyroid .
Thyroid removal is considered to be a cure for hyperthyroidism but once your thyroid is out youve effectively traded hyperthyroidism for hypothyroidism.
What does it mean to be hypothyroid?
It means that you are reliant upon thyroid medication.
And because doctors do a terrible job at replacing lost thyroid hormone once the thyroid has been removed, you will probably always feel a little bit hypothyroid .
This is so important because many people will read my blog posts and if theyve had their thyroid removed they will ask if it applies to them.
#2. T4 isnt enough by itself for you.
What Increases Your Risk
A risk factor for thyroid cancer is something that increases your chance of getting this cancer. Having one or more of these risk factors can make it more likely that you will get thyroid cancer. But it doesn’t mean that you will definitely get it. And many people who get thyroid cancer don’t have any of these risk factors.
The most common risk factors for thyroid cancer include:

What Are Goiters And Thyroid Nodules
An enlarged thyroid gland can be felt as a lump under the skin at the front of the neck. When it is large enough to see easily, it’s called a goiter.
A thyroid nodule is a lump or enlarged area in the thyroid gland. A nodule may simply be swollen tissue, an overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue, or a collection of fluid called a cyst. Most thyroid nodules in children are not caused by cancer.

Senate Formally Begins Historic Impeachment Trial Of Trump
Lead by House of Representatives Clerk Cheryl Johnson and House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving, followed by impeachment managers Rep. Adam Schiff and Rep. Jerrold Nadler , lead the procession carrying the Articles of Impeachment from the House of Representatives to the Senate on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020.
The Senate on Thursday formally convened to consider articles of impeachment against President Trump.
Rep. Adam B. Schiff , the lead House impeachment manager, began by reading aloud the two articles in the well of the U.S. Senate, the start of the pomp and ceremony of a trial to determine whether Trump should be removed from office.
The presentation of articles got underway hours after a nonpartisan government watchdog agency said the Trump administration had violated federal law by withholding congressionally approved aid to Ukraine last summer an action at the heart of the impeachment effort.
The law does not permit the president to substitute his own policy priorities for those that Congress has enacted into law, the Government Accountability Office said in a report issued Thursday morning.
The agency report says the president is not vested with the power to ignore or amend any laws enacted by Congress.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen called the report a bombshell legal opinion that demonstrates, without a doubt, that the Trump administration illegally withheld security assistance from Ukraine.

Other Options To Enhance Your Thyroid
Are there any other things you can do to boost thyroid function after your thyroid has been removed?
The answer is maybe.
Even though you dont have a thyroid gland, your body still needs certain nutrients and vitamins to help your thyroid function.
Nutrients such as iodine are still important, even if you dont have a thyroid gland!
While the majority of iodine is stored in your thyroid gland, other cells in your body also use iodine.
In addition, nutrients such as Selenium and Zinc can also help aid in T4 to T3 conversion in your body.
This is true even if you cant produce thyroid hormone on your own and even if you are taking thyroid medication by mouth.
Your goal when taking supplements should be to ensure that you have an adequate amount of these nutrients so your thyroid can function as close to 100% as possible.
Even small deficiencies in these nutrients may further reduce your thyroid function and lead to symptoms.
You can also use others, but ensure that they have the right ingredients!

Many Cases Discovered Accidentally
Many thyroid tumors today are discovered unexpectedly when a patient is being checked for another problem, says Douglas Ross, M.D., codirector of Thyroid Associates at Massachusetts General Hospital. A tumor may be spotted during an imaging test such as a chest or neck CT, a carotid Doppler study or a neck MRI. The imaging has gotten so much better that we’re picking up cancers decades earlier than we used to, Ross says.
Thyroid cancer is mostly curable, with an overall five-year survival rate of about 98 percent, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
However, an individual patient’s survival rate depends on what kind of thyroid cancer they have some types are aggressive and how early the cancer is detected, Russell says. That’s why it’s a good idea to be familiar with the possible symptoms of thyroid cancer, and to tell a doctor if you have any. Here are four of the most common.
Hashimotos Often Goes Undiagnosed
Hashimotos prompts your body to create antibodies that attack and inflame the thyroid.
But doctors often dont check blood for the telltale antibodies because all hypothyroidism is treated the same way.
Many people are never told they have Hashimotos, says Dr. Kellis. But at the end of the day, if your thyroid is underactive, its usually Hashimotos thyroiditis, she says.
Other, less common, causes of hypothyroidism include:
- Surgical removal of the thyroid.
- Radiation to the neck.
- Use of certain psychiatric, heart, cancer or rheumatologic medications.
So knowing whether or not you have Hashimotos may be a moot point unless youre a woman trying to conceive.
Hashimotos carries a slightly higher risk of miscarriage, so youll need the blood test for thyroid antibodies, says Dr. Kellis.
You may need to take thyroid supplements, even if your TSH levels are normal.

What Is A Thyroid Goiter
Thyroid goiter is a condition where there is an abnormal enlargement of your thyroid gland. The photo here shows how many thyroid goiters look, which is like the neck is swolen and fat. When you touch it, you can tell it isnt fat since it is firm and doesnt move much. Most thyroid goiters are painless, but they may produce symptoms due to their size itself. The most common symptom from a thyroid goiter is a lump in the neck. Other symptoms from a large thyroid goiter may include a sense of a lump in the throat, difficultly swallowing, difficulty breathing and even in extreme cases, voice changes and even vocal cord paralysis.
World wide, the most common cause of thyroid goiter is in locations where iodine in the diet is low or non-existent. This was similarly the case in the United States where thyroid goiter was commonplace until the contemporary iodination of table salt. Since then, the incidence of thyroid goiters have drastically been reduced in the United States.
Today, in the United States, thyroid goiter is more commonly associated with too much production of thyroid hormone , too little production of thyroid hormone , or multiple nodules within the thyroid gland itself .
There are two autoimmune conditions that can be causes of thyroid goiter.
Surgery For Thyroid Cancer
Most patients with thyroid cancer have some type of surgery. Surgery is done to take out the tumor and all or part of the thyroid gland. Sometimes lymph nodes are taken out from the neck, too.
Side effects of surgery
Any type of surgery can have risks and side effects. Be sure to ask the doctor what you can expect. Possible side effects of thyroid surgery include:
- Bleeding or a blood clot in the neck
- Damage to the parathyroid glands
- Short or long term problems with your voice

What Complications Of Hyperthyroidism Can Affect My Body
Hyperthyroidism can impact many parts of your body. Different systems, ranging from your vascular system to your skeletal system can all be affected if you have an overactive thyroid.
When you have hyperthyroidism, it may feel like your heart is beating very quickly. This rapid heartbeat is a symptom of the condition thats caused by your fast metabolism. The body is running faster than normal when you have hyperthyroidism, making you feel like your heart is racing. Having an irregular heartbeat can increase your risk of different medical conditions, including stroke.
The bones are the support structure for your body. When you have unchecked high levels of thyroid hormones, your bones can actually become brittle. This can lead to a condition called osteoporosis.
Eyes and Skin
Hyperthyroidism can be caused by a medical condition called Graves disease. This disease can affect both your eyes and skin. It can cause you to have several eye problems, including:
- Bulging eyes.
- Double vision and light sensitivity.
- Redness and swelling of the eyes.
Graves disease can also cause your skin to become red and swollen. This is particularly noticeable on the feet and shins.
Another complication of hyperthyroidism is something called a thyroid storm . This is a sudden and dramatic increase in your symptoms. When this happens, your heart may beat even faster than normal and you may develop a fever. A thyroid storm is an emergency situation.
Synthroid And Herbs And Supplements
Certain mineral supplements may interact with Synthroid. However, there arent any herbs that have been specifically reported to interact with Synthroid. But you should still check with your doctor or pharmacist before using any herbs or supplements while youre taking Synthroid.
Synthroid and mineral supplements
Certain mineral supplements interact with Synthroid by binding to Synthroid inside your stomach. When these supplements bind to Synthroid, your body cant absorb Synthroid. This means that you wont get the full amount of Synthroid thats in your dose.
For example, the following mineral supplements are known to interact with Synthroid:
If youre taking any of these supplements, you should take them at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after your Synthroid dose. Doing so will help make sure your dose of Synthroid is absorbed like usual.
If you have any questions about taking Synthroid with mineral supplements, talk with your doctor.

Can Hyperthyroidism Be Cured
Yes, there is a permanent treatment for hyperthyroidism. Removing your thyroid through surgery will cure hyperthyroidism. However, once the thyroid is removed, you will need to take thyroid hormone replacement medications for the rest of your life. Your body still needs thyroid hormones, just not at such high levels as you have in hyperthyroidism. Though you will need to regularly take the medication and check in with your healthcare provider regularly, this is a manageable form of thyroid disease which allows you to live a normal life.

How To Stop Hibernating And Start Sleeping Deeply
Are you sleeping or are you hibernating?
Unfortunately for most hypothyroidism sufferers, its the latter of the two.
And this is why you might feel tired no matter how much sleep you get.
Hypothyroidism affects sleep in ways other than just keeping you awake.
It affects your ability to achieve deep restful sleep too.
Weve all heard of hibernation.
In order for many animals to survive the harsh winter months, they go into a state of hibernation in order to lower their metabolism, conserve energy, and survive the cold.
But hibernation is not a form of restful sleep.
As Dr. Raymond Peat points out
Torpor is the opposite of restful sleep, and with aging, depression, hypothyroidism, and a variety of brain syndromes, sleep tends toward the hypothermic torpor.
In other words, hypothyroidism is known to promote a hibernation-like state of sleep that prevents you from reaching the deep sleep state that you need to wake up feeling refreshed.
Instead you wake up feeling like you never went to sleep in the first place.
And it has everything to do with your metabolism.
When you become hypothyroid, your otherwise healthy oxidative metabolism becomes impaired preventing your body from producing the essential nutrient carbon dioxide.
And when your carbon dioxide level falls, your serotonin production rises.
And its this rise in serotonin that decreases energy production, lowers body temperature, and promotes torpor, or this hibernation-like state of sleep.
So what can you do?
