How Should I Prepare For Thyroid Or Parathyroid Surgery

What To Expect After Thyroid Surgery

Before we initiate surgery, we need to look at health history particularly relating to the heart or lungs. Surgeons must be informed of previous cardiac procedures, including stints or pacemakers, or a history of blood clots. Patients who take blood thinners will need clearance from their prescribing doctor to stop medications before surgery. Patients should also avoid other substances that may cause excess bleeding during surgery.

All patients should complete a COVID-19 test and necessary paperwork with the surgery center prior to the date of the procedure.

Physician Volume And Expertise

Keep in mind, as well, that the likelihood of a complication occurring is much less with an experienced surgeon. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to ask your surgeon how many thyroidectomies she has performed in the past. You may also wish to ask about her complication rate, but this is not necessarily an accurate measure of competence .

Living As A Thyroid Cancer Survivor

For many people with thyroid cancer, treatment may remove or destroy the cancer. Completing treatment can be both stressful and exciting. You may be relieved to finish treatment, but find it hard not to worry about cancer growing or coming back. This is very common concern if you have had cancer.

For other people, thyroid cancer may never go away completely, or it might come back in another part of the body. These people may get regular treatments with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or other therapies to help keep the cancer under control for as long as possible. Learning to live with cancer that does not go away can be difficult and very stressful.

Trouble Eating Enough After Surgery

Sometimes it is difficult to eat after surgery because of a lack of appetite. This typically passes a few days after surgery, but it is important to continue eating nutritious foods during this part of your recovery. Constipation can cause a lack of appetite. If this is the case, speak to your surgeon about ways to relieve constipation before taking over-the-counter remedies.

While most people in America could stand to lose a few pounds, skipping meals after surgery is not the way to do it. Failing to eat enough after surgery can slow healing and delay the closure of your incision. Your body needs protein and other nutrients to build healthy new tissue and heal tissue injured by surgery.

If you are not constipated and are still having difficulty with your appetite, consider calorie-dense foods, such as a smoothie, which can contain dairy, fruit and even protein powder as necessary.

If you are unable to consume enough calories after your surgery, try to eat calorie-dense foods whenever possible. That means eating foods that contain more calories per bite than others. For example, a cup of green salad would be a food low in calories per cup, while avocado would be very high in calories per cup.

Keeping Health Insurance And Copies Of Your Medical Records

Even after treatment, its very important to keep health insurance. Tests and doctor visits cost a lot, and even though no one wants to think of their cancer coming back, this could happen.

At some point after your cancer treatment, you might find yourself seeing a new doctor who doesnt know about your medical history. Its important to keep copies of your medical records to give your new doctor the details of your diagnosis and treatment. Learn more in Keeping Copies of Important Medical Records.

Hypocalcemia And Bone Health

Your bones have been starved of calcium during the time you have had hyperparathyroidism, and will now have the chance to grow strong again. After successful parathyroid surgery, I recommend plenty of dietary calcium. If you do not take at least three daily servings of calcium-rich foods, you may prefer to take Caltrate Plus twice a day to promote healthy bones. In addition to these supplements, an exercise routine using weights is also recommended. Your vitamin D should be kept > 75 to enable your intestine to absorb the calcium in your diet.

In a small number of patients who have parathyroid surgery, the remaining parathyroid glands have become lazy, and do not function properly immediately after surgery. It is very rare after the mini-surgery, but about 5% if you need both sides of the neck explored. This is usually temporary and causes the blood calcium level to drop below normal . Symptoms of hypocalcaemia include numbness and tingling in your hands, soles of your feet and around your lips. Some patients experience a “crawling” sensation in the skin, muscle cramps or headaches. These symptoms appear between 24 and 48 hours after surgery. It is rare for them to appear after 72 hours.

Cooking For A Thyroid Cancer Diet

Discover cooking tips for a low-iodine diet, plus how to ease swallowing difficulty during thyroid cancer treatment.

Thyroid cancer treatment may mean following the kind of strict diet that can make preparing meals a challenge. Cooking for the thyroid cancer patient may take some getting used to, but you can create healthy meals to ease the difficult symptoms thyroid cancer sometimes causes.

The trick: altering food selection as well as how foods are prepared.

Planning a Low-Iodine Diet

Patients undergoing radioactive iodine therapy following surgery for thyroid cancer are usually placed on a strict low-iodine diet and iodine is in a surprising number of foods.

A low-iodine diet requires avoiding foods like:

  • Iodized salt
  • Dairy foods, including cheese, milk, yogurt, ice cream, and butter
  • Packaged breads and baked goods
  • Chocolate
  • The skins of potatoes
  • Fish and seafood, and other sea products like seaweed and kelp
  • Soybeans and other soy products, lima beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, and other types of beans
  • Egg yolks

Relying primarily on fresh foods, particularly meats, fruits, and vegetables, is generally required to minimize iodine intake. A low iodine-diet is really a very healthy diet, full of fresh foods that are low in both fat and calories.

The Outlook After Surgery For Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer is the most common reason for thyroid removal. Having cancer is a frightening, life-changing experience for most people. It helps to know that most types of thyroid cancer are curable with surgery and other treatments. Still, it may be hard to focus on your recovery after surgery.

Keeping track of all your medicines, instructions, and medical appointments can be overwhelming. Its helpful to bring a family member or close friend to your appointments to support you. Keep a list of questions to bring to your appointments, and write down the answers to keep on hand.

A common treatment for thyroid cancer after surgery is radioactive iodine. It destroys any remaining cancer cells. It involves taking the iodine in a drink or capsule while in a hospital setting. Advanced cancers may require , , or targeted drugs. Talk to your doctor about your type and stage of thyroid and ask about all your treatment options.

What You Need To Know

  • Thyroid cancer, thyroid nodules and other conditions may require thyroidectomy.
  • Once the thyroid gland is removed, the person takes replacement thyroid hormone to keep the bodys functions in balance.
  • Thyroidectomy can be performed through an incision at the front of the neck, or through the mouth .

A Change In Thyroid Hormones

If your whole thyroid gland has been removed, you will need to take tablets to replace the hormones that your thyroid would normally make. The thyroid hormones are necessary to keep your body processes going at the right rate. This is called your metabolism. Without thyroid hormones, you feel extremely tired and lacking in energy.

A tablet called thyroxine replaces the hormones. You take this tablet every day for the rest of your life. You have regular blood tests to check the hormone levels in your blood. Your doctor may change the dose of your tablet if your hormone levels are too high or too low.

If you have had part of your thyroid gland removed, the remaining gland usually makes all the hormone you need. But some people might need to take thyroxine tablets. You have blood tests to check for this.

These hormone tablets may help to stop the cancer from coming back in follicular and papillary thyroid cancer. They stop your body from producing another hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone . TSH can help these types of thyroid cancer cells to grow.

Taking thyroxine every day won’t stop you from doing the daily activities you were doing before your surgery.

Foods Containing Vitamin C

As you recover from surgery, eating a nutritious diet containing a wide variety of foods will aid your body in healing. In particular, vitamin C is necessary for healing wounds and forming scar tissue. Since vitamin C is water soluble, your body requires a continuous supply of foods containing this nutrient. Fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C include strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, sweet bell peppers, and orange and tomato juices.

If The Cancer Comes Back

Treatment options might include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy or some combination of these. Prioritize The Intake Of Zinc

Like vitamin C, your body will need other specific minerals to accelerate your recovery. Zinc is essential in the process of healing wounds and keeping your immune system functioning properly.

You can find plenty of zinc in high-protein foods like chicken, beef, and pork. Youll also find it in whole grains, nuts, and legumes. For vegans or vegetarians, you may need to start taking a zinc supplement to get the necessary amount of zinc.

Do You Gain Weight After Thyroid Surgery

Depending on how much of your thyroid was removed during the surgery will determine if medication will need to be taken for the duration of your life. With a half glad removal about 60-70% of patients will not need medication supplementation as the other side takes over. With total thyroidectomy 100% of patients will need medication after surgery. Once you get the right medication dosage and balance your hormones, the involuntary weight gain will start to subside. You will have your medication dosing coordinated by your endocrinologist or internist in most cases.

In most cases, this weight gain can be monitored and is much easier to avoid with a balanced diet. Maintain lean proteins and high amounts of vegetables in your diet to provide the nutrients your body needs. Make sure to take all medications prescribed by your doctor, especially if you had a total gland removal surgery. You will need this medication to function in place of your thyroid to maintain a healthy weight.

Vitamin C is easily water soluble, and there are numerous powders and drinks that are packed with this vitamin.

How To Recover From Thyroid Surgery

Most patients are amazed at the ease of recovery with minimally invasive thyroid surgery with one of our expert surgeons. Patients usually go home 4-6 hours after surgery and are able to talk, walk and eat the same day. They will experience a sore neck, sore throat and some voice changes for the first few weeks after surgery. Most patients are fully recovered in 1-2 weeks after surgery and return to work or school. Shorter recovery periods depend on how well you are maintaining your body once you are at home. Patients can shower the next day at home but are encouraged not to get the incision wet for 48 hours.

Going Home

Once you start home from the surgical center, you are responsible for your recovery moving forward. You will need to monitor and maintain the following based upon your doctors recommendations:

Incision Dressing

Gradual Exercise

Reduce Unhealthy Practices

Your scar from the incision will start to heal and is often covered with steri-strips over the incision. It is there to prevent bacteria and infection and will start to fall off as the incision heals. Keep the area clean until you see your surgeon one week later and he removes the steri-strips. You can then begin to add topical scar treatment to the area to help with healing as instructed by your surgeon.

Ask Your Doctor For A Survivorship Care Plan

Talk with your doctor about developing a survivorship care plan for you. This plan might include:

  • A suggested schedule for follow-up exams and tests
  • A list of possible late- or long-term side effects from your treatment, including what to watch for and when you should contact your doctor
  • A schedule for other tests you might need, such as early detection tests for other types of cancer, or test to look for long-term health effects from your cancer or its treatment
  • Diet and physical activity suggestions that might improve your health, including possibly lowering your chances of the cancer coming back
  • Reminders to keep your appointments with your primary care provider , who will monitor your general health care
