What Increases Your Risk For Thyroid Nodules
You are more likely to develop a thyroid nodule if:
- You are older.
- Thyroid nodules are more common in older people.
Diagnosing And Treating Dysphagia
Because dysphagia can be caused by various medical conditions, it is important to get a proper diagnosis on the cause of your swallowing difficulty. If the thyroid gland is enlarged enough to cause compressing symptoms, your doctor may be able to identify the goiter by palpating the neck area during swallowing.
Other diagnostic tests to determine if an enlarged thyroid is the cause of dysphagia may include:
Diagnosing swallowing problems may also include:
- Endoscopy: Thin, flexible tube equipped with a tiny camera is inserted into the esophagus to visualize the inside of the esophagus and pharynx for evaluation.
- Cineradiography: Barium is swallowed and then viewed on an x-ray to study its movement through the esophagus.
- Manometry: Strength and timing of esophageal contractions and valve relaxation are measured.
If it is determined that an enlarged thyroid is causing dysphagia, treatment typically involves partial or total removal of the thyroid gland . Multiple studies show results of 85% of thyroid patients with compressive symptoms experiencing relief of those symptoms after undergoing thyroid surgery. In cases of thyroid inflammation, your doctor may prescribe medication to reduce thyroid swelling and swallowing problems. Treatment will often depend on severity of the dysphagia.
Other causes of dysphagia can include:
- Certain medications

What Are The Risks Of Removing The Thyroid Gland
Behind your childs thyroid gland runs the recurrent laryngeal nerves that help to move the vocal folds and the parathyroid glands which help regulate their bodys calcium levels.
Some of the major risk factors following the removal of the thyroid gland are:
- A hoarse/breathy voice.
- Low calcium levels.
After surgery your child will need to take a medication to supplement the thyroid function and in some cases a medication to keep calcium levels elevated.
Other risk factors include:
- A scar on the neck.
- Fluid collection under the skin.
- The need for future procedures such as removal of the lymph nodes from the neck.

What Can I Do To Manage My Thyroid Goiter
- Eat iodine-rich foods. Examples include fish, seaweed, dairy products, eggs, beans, and lean meat. Iodized salt also contains iodine. You may need to use iodized table salt when you cook and season your food. Iodine may be added to bread or to your drinking water. Ask for a list of foods that contain iodine, and ask how much iodine you need each day.
- Go to your follow-up appointments. Write down your questions so you remember to ask them during your visits.

Difficulty Swallowing Is Associated With Several Different Thyroid Issues
According to the experts at Fort Worth ENT, various thyroid disorders can cause your thyroid glandwhich is usually about the size of a quarterto become enlarged and compress swallowing organs. Inna Husain, MD, the section head of the Laryngology Department at Rush University Medical Center, says that when this gland becomes enlarged, it compresses an airway it sits in front of called the trachea. And the trachea sits in front of the esophagusthe tube that delivers food and liquid to the stomachwhich then also becomes compressed. All of this makes it harder to swallow, Husain says.
The thyroid conditions that can cause difficulty swallowing include Graves’ disease, thyroiditis, Hashimoto’s disease, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism, per Fort Worth ENT. Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism are conditions caused by the overproduction of thyroid hormones, while thyroiditis involves swelling or inflammation of the thyroid. Hypothyroidism is the underproduction of thyroid hormones, as is Hashimoto’s disease, which occurs when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing damage and swelling that limits the thyroid’s ability to produce hormones. If You Find It Difficult To Swallow When Eating Or Drinking You Should Get Your Thyroid Checked
If you find yourself having trouble swallowing when trying to eat or drink, you could be facing a thyroid problem. Difficulty swallowing, also known as dysphagia, may make it hard for food or fluid to go down, says David Beatty, MRCGP, a general practitioner with more than 30 years of experience. “If someone is having difficulty swallowing, they may find food or fluid is slow to go down, they may get regurgitation into the mouth, or they may get partial reflux with cough and choking if food or fluid begins to ‘go down the wrong way,'” Beatty explains. And for more drinking concerns, If You’re Drinking This Bottled Water, Your Liver May Be in Danger, FDA Says.

Can Thyroid Problems Cause Trouble Swallowing
Thyroid enlargement can cause difficulty swallowing, or dysphagia, as a result of the thyroid gland directly compressing the swallowing organs. The thyroid gland, which is usually about the size of a quarter, can become enlarged as a symptom of various thyroid disorders, as well as other medical conditions.
Types Of Thyroid Cancer
There are 4;main types of thyroid cancer. They are:
- papillary carcinoma this is the most common type, accounting for about 6 out of 10; cases; it usually affects people under the age of 40, particularly women
- follicular carcinoma accounts for around;3 out of 20 cases of thyroid cancer and tends to affect older adults
- medullary thyroid carcinoma accounts for between 5 and 8 out of every 100 diagnosed cases ; unlike the other types of thyroid cancer, medullary thyroid carcinoma;can run in families;
- anaplastic thyroid carcinoma this is the rarest and most aggressive type of thyroid cancer, accounting for less than 1;in 20 thyroid cancers; it usually affects older people over the age of 60;
Papillary and follicular carcinomas are sometimes known as differentiated thyroid cancers, and theyre often treated in the same way.

Goiters Are A Diagnosis That Can Be Hard To Swallow
Dr. William B. Inabnet, III
LEXINGTON — January is Thyroid Awareness Month, but for most of us, the thyroid isn’t something we think about. It’s a small, butterfly-shaped gland located on the lower part of the neck, but it plays a big role in how the body functions. The thyroid produces the thyroid hormone that helps the body regulate its temperature, energy level and keeps the brain, heart and other organs working as they should. When the thyroid isn’t functioning properly, the repercussions can affect the whole body.
The term “goiter” refers to any abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. There are several causes of goiter formation. One is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a condition in which the thyroid is attacked by the body’s own immune system. As a result, the thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone, leading to hypothyroidism. A person with an underactive thyroid will experience symptoms such fatigue, weight gain, and hair loss.
Another common condition that causes goiter is Graves’ disease. Unlike Hashimoto’s, Graves’ causes an overactive thyroid gland; too much thyroid hormone in the blood can lead to hyperthyroidism. Symptoms can include anxiety or nervousness, difficulty sleeping, excessive sweating and weight loss.
Aside from the symptoms of an over or underactive thyroid, goiters themselves are usually painless. But a particularly large thyroid can lead to other issues such as:

- What to do about it?
A thyroid nodule that causes any symptom of swallowing will need to be removed with surgery. The vast majority of these are simply large, benign goiters and only very few are cancerous. But like almost all thyroid nodules that cause symptoms, surgery will be necessary for this group. Many of these goiters won’t need a biopsy because it can be hard to get all the way to the back of the neck with a needle. Almost all of these will need a CAT scan to give the surgeon a better understanding of how big the goiter is and where it goes.
How Can My Doctor Tell If I Have A Thyroid Nodule That Is Cancerous
Your doctor can do several different tests. One test is called fine-needle aspiration. Your doctor will take a;tissue;sample from your thyroid gland and examine it under a microscope to see if its cancerous. The tissue sample is taken with a very small needle.
Another test your doctor may do is an ultrasound. This test uses sound waves to make a picture of the thyroids shape and the size of the nodules. It can help your doctor determine whether the nodule is a solid;tumor;or a;cyst;filled with fluid.
A third test is a thyroid scan. Your doctor will inject harmless radioactive iodine into a;vein;in your arm. The iodine is absorbed by your thyroid gland and makes it glow as your doctor takes a special picture. Your doctor can learn about the nodule depending on how much or how little of the iodine shows in the picture.

Inability To Regulate Temperature
One of the automatic functions the thyroid gland helps regulate is your internal temperature. Your internal temperature can fluctuate when your thyroid is overactive or underactive. Those with hypothyroidism, for instance, may feel cold all the time, even in a warm environment, due to a slower metabolism and lower body temperature. However, its important to note that low or high body temperature is not a reliable indicator of thyroid disease. A person can measure at 98.6°F and still be hyperthyroid or hypothyroid.
Difficulty regaining proper body temperature when too cold or overheated. Victoria H.
My bodys inability to regulate temperature properly. Im always freezing to the core with temperatures below 50, and feeling like Im about to pass out in the heat. It stops me from doing a lot of activities in the winter and summer because I never know how my bodys going to react to a given temperature. If I travel, I always pack two outfits for each day as a just in case the weather fluctuates 5 degrees. Lisa W.
I have extreme heat intolerance, even when my extremities might be cold from being hypo. Even at 76°F, if I try to do something like blow dry my hair Ill sweat faster than I can dry my hair! Living in a place where there is like four months straight of triple digit heat hasnt been easy. Meg B.
