Armour Thyroid Vs Synthroid: How To Choose Which Is Best For You

The first line of treatment for hypothyroidism should be Synthroid .

This is due to the possible side effects and lack of evidence for the use of either Armour Thyroid or combination therapy. Essentially, T3 given in medication makes regulating blood T3 levels difficult. As a result, acute or chronic side effects may occur.

Synthroid produces more consistent hormone levels and fewer side effects. For the majority of people, Synthroid will correct thyroid hormone levels and symptoms will resolve.

A minority of people may not find symptom relief with Synthroid. In this case, experimental therapy with a combination of synthetic T4 and T3 may be warranted under the supervision of an endocrinologist.

While there are anecdotal reports of Armour Thyroid producing superior results, theres a lack of evidence to support this. It appears that using synthetic T3 is more reliable than using Armour Thyroid.

It should be noted that hypothyroidism associated with thyroid surgery, cancer or pregnancy may require a different treatment plan. The information in this article mainly refers to idiopathic or autoimmune causes of hypothyroid such as Hashimotos disease.

Why Did Doctors Switch From Armour Thyroid To Synthroid

Desiccated thyroid extract was the original medication used to treat hypothyroidism.

During this time, thyroid hormones were not completely understood and there was a lack of reliable diagnostic tools to measure circulating levels in the blood.

This lead to the following problems:

  • Difficulties determining the correct dose for the individual.
  • Difficulties measuring the exact amount of T4 and T3 present in desiccated thyroid extract.

As a result, the dosage was often too high and serious side effects were often reported. Also, due to inconsistencies in the strength of medication, some people were not seeing any improvements.

Conversely, Synthroid was thought to offer a safe and consistent dosage. Two things lead to this switch:

  • The discovery that most T3 was converted from T4 via an enzyme in the body. This meant medication need only contain T4 to be effective.
  • The diagnostic tools for measuring blood levels of thyroid hormones advanced. Scientists were able to see that Synthroid was effective at normalising blood levels of thyroid hormones .
  • Summary: Desiccated thyroid extract was the first type of medication used to treat hypothyroidism. Eventually, a synthetic T4 medication was created and found to be a safer and more effective option.

What Are Some Examples Of Natural Thyroid Hormone Replacement

Np thyroid: Should you use this thyroid medication? (5 things to know)

Naturally derived thyroid preparations come from animals, usually pigs, cows, or sheep. Desiccated thyroid is a natural preparation, and it was the only treatment for hypothyroidism before levothyroxine was available. It has a characteristic, strong odor.

is the most common desiccated thyroid. It comes from pigs and is a mix of both thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine and thyroxine . There are few clinical trials on Armour Thyroid, meaning it has not been studied well. Additionally, and importantly, the FDA has not approved it for use.

Other brand names for desiccated thyroid are Nature-Throid, Westhroid, and NP Thyroid.

    How Should I Take It

Armour Thyroid is typically taken orally once daily. The dosage requirements are usually individualized based on patient needs. Dosage is usually low at the beginning of treatment so that your body can become accustomed to it.

If youve accidentally missed a pill, do not take two pills at once. Just continue with your medication normally.

Strict Adherence Required For Consistent Absorption And Effectiveness

Studies have found that many people dont adhere to thyroid medication usage guidelines. They wont take it on an empty stomach , and theyll take it with their morning coffee or their acid reflux medication, without the required wait time. All of this can impact their medications absorption and its effectiveness. If adherence is an issue for you, the best T4 medication might be the hypoallergenic T4 medication, Tirosint, which Ill talk about in a moment.

I am always a bit dismayed to hear from people that they did not know about the impact on their medications effectiveness by not following these basic guidelines, but research has found that ingesting food with T4 medication decreases its absorption from approximately 80 percent to 40 percent. Coffee impacts absorption, too. Its all about the gastric pH level and how foods, drinks and medications reduce the acid levels within the gastrointestinal system. Without this acidity, tablets take longer to break down, and there are direct effects on absorption that occur.

Thyroid medications have a narrow therapeutic index, meaning that they are goldilocks hormones, and careful dose titration is needed to get things just right. Doses that are incorrect by just a tiny amount can result in symptoms from over-treatment or under-treatment. So the above issues can all result in ineffective thyroid treatment.

In order to overcome the absorption issues, I recommend the following:

The Challenge Of Getting Treated With Ndt

You may find it challenging to find a doctor who will prescribe NDT. The reason? The predominance of levothyroxine treatment has left many physicians misinformed about NDT.

Here are just a few of the concerns you may hear about NDT:

    “NDT is too old fashioned.”

Many conventional physicians view NDT as too old-fashioned. This viewpoint is surprising, actually, given that NDT has been used safely and effectively for more than 100 years. Yet, some doctors still regularly prescribe other “old-fashioned drugs” such as aspirin and penicillin alongside newer medications.

“Levothyroxine is more effective than NDT.”

Some practitioners claim that levothyroxine is a more effective treatment than NDT and better controls thyroid test levels. Ć¢However, recent studies show that many patients who take levothyroxine still have abnormal test levels and continued symptoms. And research studies have shown that among patients who have taken levothyroxine and NDT, more patients prefer NDT treatment.

    “NDT is not FDA-approved.”

NDT was in use long before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration came into existence. As a result, the FDA “grandfathered” NDT and never required a new drug application for FDA approval. So, while NDT is not officially “FDA-approved,” it is strictly regulated by the FDA, and legal to prescribe as a hypothyroidism treatment. Like any FDA-regulated drug, NDT also meets stringent FDA manufacturing guidelines for potency and consistency.

How Should I Take Desiccated Thyroid

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

While using desiccated thyroid, you may need frequent blood tests.

Keep using this medicine as directed, even if you feel well. You may need to take thyroid medication for the rest of your life.

Call your doctor if you notice any signs of thyroid toxicity, such as chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats, feeling hot or nervous, or sweating more than usual.

If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using desiccated thyroid. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Adverse Reactions And Medication Ineffectiveness Due To Fillers

I have found that some of my clients experience sensitivities and adverse reactions to the many inactive ingredients or fillers found in their T4 medications. These are added as bulking agents used to stabilize the tablets, as coloring agents, as preservatives, or to aid in the manufacturing process in some way. Many have been shown to potentially cause adverse reactions, as well as affect the absorption rate and effectiveness of the very medication meant to help the thyroid.

Most generic levothyroxine products contain lactose and not all are gluten-free .

Can small amounts of these types of fillers really be problematic? Yes! Many people with Hashimotos have sensitivities to these ingredients no matter how small the exposure. In my 2015 survey of 2,232 readers, 57 percent of respondents said they reacted to or avoided all dairy, and over 75 percent avoided gluten due to sensitivities and reactions. Other fillers that are commonly found in T4 medications may include confectioners sugar , sucrose, talc, and dyes. Why would we want these inactive filler ingredients in our thyroid medication?

    • You can look up the latest and greatest on medication fillers at to ensure that your medications are gluten-free and free of fillers that may be reactive for you.
    • Alternately, consider switching to Tirosint and Tirosint SOL these formulations have minimal fillers.

Is Armour Thyroid Better Because Its Natural

Many holistic blogs claim that desiccated thyroid extract is superior because its natural.

However, all of these products contain synthetic fillers to hold the pill together, meaning they are never 100% natural .

Because synthetic T4 and T3 are biologically identical to the natural hormones, they produce exactly the same actions within the body .

The only difference is that Armour Thyroid also contains calcitonin, T1 and T2, which may be biologically active .

However, there does not appear to be any evidence that they produce any significant effect in these amounts.

Summary: Synthetic thyroid hormones are biologically identical to animal hormones and will produce the same effects. No pills are 100% natural all contain synthetic fillers regardless.

    The T4/t3 Thyroid Drug Controversy

What happened to NP Thyroid? Why it was recalled

As noted, the standard treatment for hypothyroidism is levothyroxine alone. The addition of T3 to the levothyroxine/T4-only treatmentor using DTEis controversial and the topic of ongoing research and discussion.

Once experts realized that T4 naturally converts to T3, there was a great deal of excitement about how modern levothyroxine was compared to DTE, which was considered old-fashioned. At that time, many healthcare providers switched patients over to the synthetic medication and never looked back.

Still, some of these patients complained after being switched to levothyroxine that their symptoms had worsened or couldn’t be resolved. This led to a number of the healthcare providers who had previously prescribed DTE for their patients putting some of them back on it.

DTE is prescribed far less often than levothyroxine. But frustrated patients who don’t feel well who are doing their research and talking to other people. As a result, they’re becoming increasingly aware that there are options beyond levothyroxine and that some people feel better on DTE.

    What Is Np Thyroid

    What exactly is NP Thyroid?

NP Thyroid is a relatively new thyroid medication which is available. It has become more popular as it has become harder and harder to get other forms of Natural Desiccated Thyroid medications such as Nature-throid and WP Thyroid.

It’s important for you to understand that NP thyroid is another formulation of Natural Desiccated thyroid hormone and medication.

    What does that mean?

It means that it contains the same active ingredients as Armour thyroid but it differs in the type and amount of inactive ingredients.

Both medications are considered natural and both are sourced from animal thyroid glands .

Both Armour thyroid and NP Thyroid are dosed in the same way with equivalent doses.

That means 60mg of Armour thyroid is equal to 60mg of NP Thyroid.

Each grain of NP Thyroid contains 38mcg of T4 thyroid hormone and 9 mcg of T3 thyroid hormone which is similar to other brands and formulations of NDT .

Does that mean that you will react the exact same way if you switch medications?

Not exactly and that’s part of the point of this article.
