Flax seed may play a role in the health of your thyroid gland. The other day my dad asked if I could recommend a food that would help relieve a variety of symptoms he had recently been experiencing. He had high cholesterol, anxiety, depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, and headaches.
He also had a terrible memory, began experiencing hair loss, and had trouble sleeping at night, despite being exhausted. Some of his other symptoms included bruising fairly easily, dry skin and hair, sensitivity to heat and cold, tingling in his feet and hands, and dry eyes with blurry vision.
I thought about it for a minute. It sounded like he had several signs that can indicate an underactive thyroidalso called hypothyroidism. A comprehensive blood thyroid panel and saliva test would both confirm that low thyroid function was the issue.
I recommended that my dad start eating flaxseed and flaxseed oil every day. It is also known by the plant name Linum usitatissimum and is sometimes called linseed. Nutritionally, you cant go wrong with flaxseed. These brown or yellow seeds are loaded with fiber, protein, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, folate, and vitamin B1 and B6.
Foods And Drugs To Avoid While On Hypothyroid Medication
- Coffee or other drinks containing caffeine. Restrict your intake and never take your thyroid medication with a cup of coffee!
- Iron or vitamin supplements containing iron should be taken at least 3-4 hours after taking your thyroid medication.
- Calcium or vitamin supplements containing calcium should be taken at least 3-4 hours after taking your thyroid medication. This includes calcium-fortified orange juice!
- Antacids. Wait at least 2-3 hours.
- Antidepressants, e.g. Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac. Wait at least 2-3 hours.
- Soy products as well as flaxseed. These may alter your hormone levels!
- Goitrogenic foods: broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, spinach, turnips, soybeans, peanuts, linseed, pine nuts, millet, cassava, and mustard greens. Please note that the vegetables can be eaten in moderation but should always be cooked.
- Alcoholic beverages and tobacco
- Sugar and flour
- Highly processed foods
Note that the foods listed above should be avoided or limited if you suffer from underactive thyroid . If you suffer from hyperthyroidism, there are different restrictions.
Update, May 2012: Two months after my unusual TSH readings, I went back for another test. To my relief, my TSH has dropped down from 25.2 to only 3.0. The only food that I have been avoiding is flaxseed, which confirms my suspicion that flaxseed is bad for hypothyroid patients.

EFAs help manage inflammation and autoimmunity, promote blood vessel health, support healthy skin growth, provide the precursors to balance hormones, and support healthy brain and nervous system function. They are considered essential because our bodies need them for so many reasons.
The body requires about a 1:1 ratio of essential omega-3 and omega-6 fats for proper immune function and all the other roles EFAs play. Today, the average person on the Standard American Diet eats a ratio of as high as 25:1, with way too many omega-6 fats compared to omega-3 fats.

In my experience, most cruciferous vegetables are well tolerated and offer health benefits for most people with Hashimotos. They help the body detoxify, especially when cooked. Even in their raw state, I have not seen issues with cruciferous vegetables in most clients, with the exception of those with SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth , and in those with the CBS genetic mutation or sulfur sensitivity .
