How To Talk To Your Healthcare Provider About Dte
If you’re being treated for hypothyroidism with levothyroxine alone and you still have symptoms of persistent hypothyroidism, talk to your healthcare provider about the possibility of trying DTE. Though it has been in use for more than 100 years, DTE is still somewhat controversial and it can be a challenge to find healthcare providers who will prescribe it. Most healthcare providers today were taught in medical school that levothyroxine is the only acceptable option for treating hypothyroidism.

Along with that, many healthcare providers aren’t aware that DTE is still available or that it can be used safely to treat some hypothyroid patients. Some believe that prescribing DTE is difficult. These ideas are unfortunately reinforced by negative opinions from levothyroxine sales representatives, unfounded rumors that DTE is going off the market, and other anecdotal information.
Let your healthcare provider know that you’ve done your homework on DTE and that recent studies have shown that it can be very beneficial for people who aren’t doing well on levothyroxine. Though, in 2012, the American Thyroid Association said that DTE should not be used to treat hypothyroidism, it conceded in its 2014 recommendations that some people respond well to DTE or a combination of synthetic T4/T3 therapy.
Conversion From Nature Throid Or Np Thyroid To Levothyroxine And Cytomel Combination
The ratio of T4:T3 is approximately 4:1 in Nature-Throid, NP Thyroid, and Armour Thyroid.
For example, if you were on 65 mg per day of Nature- Throid or 60 mg of NP Thyroid you were getting about 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3. Unfortunately, Levothyroxine and Cytomel are not available in these doses. The closest dose of Levothyroxine would be 25 mcg, which you may take as 1-1/2 tablet a day which will give you 37.5 mcg of T4.
Cytomel is available as 5 mcg tablet. You may take two tablets of Cytomel a day which will give you 10 mcg of T3.

Nature Throid Vs Armour Thyroid Vs Np Thyroid
As mentioned above, the active ingredient is the same in Nature Throid, NP Thyroid and Armour thyroid. It is called dessicated Thyroid, which comes from pigs and cattle. However, there are differences in the inactive ingredients between Armour Thyroid, Nature Throid and NP Thyroid. For this reason, some patients may not do as well when switched from Nature-Throid or NP Thyroid to Armour Thyroid.
Is Armour Thyroid Better Because It Contains T3
One of the main arguments for the use of Armour Thyroid is that it contains T3 as well as T4.
Its possible that a minority of people will do better on a combination of T3 and T4 replacement therapy. However, there is only a small amount of evidence available to support this theory .
A trial of combination T4 and T3 therapy is recommended for patients who do not experience symptom relief on Synthroid. This is experimental and should be stopped if no positive results are seen after three months .
While it may be beneficial, there are some issues associated with using Armour Thyroid to replace T3, including:
- Inconsistent dosage in Armour Thyroid: There may still be inconsistencies and stability problems in the preparation of Armour Thyroid. This can result in fluctuating blood levels of thyroid hormones.
- Difficulties maintaining T3 levels: The ratio of T4 to T3 in Armour Thyroid is much higher than that typically excreted from a healthy human thyroid. Additionally, T3 does not last as long in the body and is much more difficult to maintain a consistent level.
T3 levels may spike or become elevated and symptoms such as heart palpitations and others seen in hyperthyroidism can occur. Slow release or multiple daily doses of synthetic T3 are likely to produce much more consistent blood levels and less side effects .

Candidate Is Taking Armour Thyroid Rather Than Levothyroxine
When MedPage Today wrote that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s physician, Lisa Bardack, MD, had released additional health information about Clinton, one item received several comments: Bardack’s use of the porcine product Armour Thyroid rather than levothyroxine to treat Clinton’s hypothyroidism.
“Armour Thyroid. One would think we could do better for our former First Lady,” wrote one commenter.
“I am glad to hear she is taking Armour Thyroid rather than synthetic substitutes which contain only T4 and not T3. I always prescribed Armour for my patients because it is more natural, safer and more effective,” wrote another.
Armour Thyroid is a thyroid tablet derived from the thyroid glands of pigs and “has a strong, characteristic odor,” according to the drug’s prescribing information. The tablets “provide 38 mcg levothyroxine and 9 mcg liothyronine per grain of thyroid.”
Although thyroid hormone extracts have been used for centuries, the first reports of use in the English-speaking medical literature were in England in 1891, explained James Hennessey, MD, an endocrinologist at Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center in Boston and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Initially the extract was derived from sheep and given in the form of an injection.

Is Np Thyroid Considered Natural Or Synthetic
NP thyroid is considered to be a natural thyroid medication because it is derived from animal thyroid glands.
The hormones contained in this medication were created by the thyroid gland of animals and not in a lab.
Natural thyroid medications should be differentiated from synthetic medications .
Just because NP thyroid is natural does not mean that it is superior to other forms of thyroid medications, however.
Some people do quite well on clean T4 only thyroid medications such as Tirosint, especially when combined with T3 only thyroid medications.
The benefit to using these medications separately is that you can easily titrate your T4 and T3 dose.
If you’ve tried all of the different types of natural thyroid medications and you still aren’t feeling well then you may want to give a cleaner T4 + T3 thyroid medication combination a try.

Understanding Synthetic Versus Natural Thyroid Medications
What is the difference between synthetic versus natural thyroid medications? Natural Thyroid formulations such as Nature-Throid, Armour, and WP Thyroid are derived from desiccated porcine thyroid glands which contain not only T4 like in synthetics but also T3. Natural thyroid from desiccated thyroid have been used to treat thyroid problems for more than 100 years as reported in medical journals and books. Natural thyroid formulations also target T2, T1 and Calcitonin which can be beneficial. Synthetic thyroid medications such as Synthroid and Levothyroxine contain Thyroxine , which is the identical hormone produced by the thyroid gland.
In our practice most patients feel much better, with more energy, and relief of symptoms when switching from synthetic to a natural thyroid. In addition, natural thyroid seems to address other medical problems by improving immune system, aiding in in depression, lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, and stabilizing cortisol levels.
Some people have concerns with the stability of natural thyroid formulations. Therefore to ensure that natural thyroid formulations are consistent analytical tests are performed on the raw material and on the actual tablets to measure actual T4 and T3 activity.
What Are Some Examples Of Natural Thyroid Hormone Replacement
Naturally derived thyroid preparations come from animals, usually pigs, cows, or sheep. Desiccated thyroid is a natural preparation, and it was the only treatment for hypothyroidism before levothyroxine was available. It has a characteristic, strong odor.
is the most common desiccated thyroid. It comes from pigs and is a mix of both thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine and thyroxine . There are few clinical trials on Armour Thyroid, meaning it has not been studied well. Additionally, and importantly, the FDA has not approved it for use.
Other brand names for desiccated thyroid are Nature-Throid, Westhroid, and NP Thyroid.

Is Compounded Thyroid Better Than Armour
Just being in the normal range is not good enough. Because raising T3 at the tissue levels cannot usually be accomplished with T4 alone, taking a Desiccated Thyroid product like Armour, NP thyroid, Nature-Throid, WP Thyroid or having it compounded from a compounding pharmacy is much better than taking T4 alone.

Why Did Doctors Switch From Armour Thyroid To Synthroid
Desiccated thyroid extract was the original medication used to treat hypothyroidism.
During this time, thyroid hormones were not completely understood and there was a lack of reliable diagnostic tools to measure circulating levels in the blood.
This lead to the following problems:
- Difficulties determining the correct dose for the individual.
- Difficulties measuring the exact amount of T4 and T3 present in desiccated thyroid extract.
As a result, the dosage was often too high and serious side effects were often reported. Also, due to inconsistencies in the strength of medication, some people were not seeing any improvements.
Conversely, Synthroid was thought to offer a safe and consistent dosage. Two things lead to this switch:
Summary: Desiccated thyroid extract was the first type of medication used to treat hypothyroidism. Eventually, a synthetic T4 medication was created and found to be a safer and more effective option.

Conversion Of T4 To T3
The conversion of T4 to T3 takes place under the direction of an enzyme called Deiodinase. There are two types of this enzyme one inside the brain which is called Type 2 Deiodinase and the one inside the rest of the body is called Type 1 Deiodinase.
The conversion to T3 gets easily disrupted due to a variety of conditions, such as Hashimotos thyroiditis, stress, obesity, aging, diabetes, nutritional deficiencies and certain medications including beta-blockers and steroids.
Which Is Better Levothyroxine Or Armour Thyroid
The subgroup that preferred Armour Thyroid lost even more weight they lost 4 pounds on Armour Thyroid compared to levothyroxine. They had better well-being and their thyroid symptoms were significantly better with better cognitive function on Armour Thyroid compared to when they were on levothyroxine.
What Should I Discuss With My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Desiccated Thyroid
Since thyroid hormone occurs naturally in the body, almost anyone can take desiccated thyroid. However, you may not be able to use this medication if you have a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an adrenal gland problem that is not controlled by treatment.
To make sure desiccated thyroid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- any type of diabetes or
- problems with your adrenal gland.
Small amounts of desiccated thyroid can pass into breast milk, but this is not expected to harm a nursing baby. However, do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

What Is The Difference Between T3 And T4
T3 has three iodine atom in its molecule. That is why it is also called Triiodothyronine. But T4 has four iodine atoms. That why it is also called tetraiodothyronine or thyroxine.
T3 is the active thyroid hormone that actually binds to the Thyroid Hormone Receptor inside the nucleus of a cell. In this way, it is T3 that sets in motion the actions of the thyroid hormone in our body.
On the other hand T4 is inactive by itself as it does not bind to the Thyroid Hormone Receptor. But it converts to T3 inside the cell. As such, it serves as a reservoir for T3.
In normal individuals, about 80% of the daily production of T3 comes from the conversion of T4 to T3 and remaining 20% from the Thyroid gland itself.
How Long Will It Be Until Ndt Is Readily Available
What if you were taking these medications and previously doing well on them?
What does this mean for you in terms of how long you will have to wait to get them back in active stock?
Unfortunately, when mass recalls like this happen it tends to take quite a while for the stock to be replenished and for everyone to get back on their previous doses.
These sorts of recalls tend to create large shortages in many pharmacies, especially for other brands of NDT .
Lets say you were doing really well on 1.5 grains of Nature-throid and you had your symptoms under control.
You are now told that you can no longer get Nature-throid so you look for an alternative.
Because NP thyroid isnt available, you have to switch to Armour thyroid.
But you arent the only one.
There are people who were previously on NP thyroid, Nature-throid, and WP thyroid who are now suddenly all trying to switch to Armour thyroid.
This creates a huge demand for Armour thyroid and puts it at risk for going on backorder simply due to the demand.
And this also happens with various dosages of different brands of NDT as well.
Think of it like the toilet paper debacle of 2020.
Even though toiler paper companies were pumping out toiler paper like crazy, it still took them several months to actually catch up to the demand.
A similar thing may happen with other brands of NDT so be wary of that.
