Waking Up Feeling More Tired Or Not Refreshed

A common symptom that people with hypothyroidism have is waking up not feeling refreshed, and, commonly, actually waking up feeling more tired than when they went to bed the night before.;;
I experienced this and it baffled me. I thought How does that make sense?! I got ten hours of sleep last night and still woke up feeling more tired than when I went to bed!
What are the possible causes for this?
Invest In A Water Filter
Tap water can contain levels of chlorine or fluoride , which can disrupt how much iodine your thyroid ends up getting. Since iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, this could end up interfering with your thyroid function. Opt for a carbon-block filter, which will reduce levels of chlorine and fluoride.
Aching Joints And Muscles
This was a symptom that came later for me, but I thought it was because I wasnt sleeping well. Id wake up with aching leg muscles. I also started to notice my hands hurting a lot, and I kept dropping things, too.
The thyroid hormones take so much out of your body, it is common to be depleted of minerals. This often causes aches, pains and even cramps.

Stay away from dietary and environmental triggers
Certain foods, smells, and environments can increase your risk of having night sweats.

Prepare your sleep environment

- Turn down the thermostat and turn up the fan.
- Wear light, loose-fitting pajamas, or skip them altogether. If you find you also struggle with cold intolerance, consider wearing layers to bed that can easily be removed.
- Use light blankets or sheets.
- Have a glass of cold water next to the bed.
- Consider using pillows and mattress pads designed to cool your body as you sleep.
Establish a bedtime routine
Much like a child has a specific bedtime routine to help them wind down for rest, adults also benefit from having a routine. Wind down the same way each day: take a cool shower, shut screens off at least an hour before sleep, avoid late-night snacking, do yoga, massage, or journal. Allowing your body and mind to relax can signal your body that it is time to rest.

Its no secret that many of us find mornings to be difficult when living with hypothyroidism, and often, other things alongside this too
Waking up feeling fatigued, nauseated, dizzy, weak, brain fogged and understandably grumpy are all reported back to me by fellow thyroid patients on a regular basis. One of the biggest complaints I hear is around waking up feeling unrefreshed and in fact more tired than when we got in to bed the night before!
Since my diagnosis of hypothyroidism and Hashimotos, as well as experiencing adrenal fatigue , blood sugar imbalances, oestrogen dominance and leaky gut which all formed part of my big thyroid jigsaw puzzle over the years Ive learnt a lot when it comes to starting my day off as positively as possible.
The below tips are things that I have personally found to help me in the morning.

Do you lie awake at night, eyes wide open, waiting for the sleep fairy to sprinkle her magic dust? Or, perhaps youre so tired during the day that you nap and then cant fall asleep at night.

Whats Really Slowing Our Thyroid Down
In order to boost your thyroid, we need to understand whats causing the problem in the first place. Hypothyroidism is a complex disorder that can stem from a number of different causes, including:
- The thyroid may fail to produce enough thyroid hormone as a result of an autoimmune response against the thyroid or other problems with the function of the thyroid gland itself.
- Toxic levels of mercury, typically resulting from mercury fillings in the mouth or consuming large amounts of mercury-laden ocean fish, may inhibit thyroid gland function.
- High levels of estrogen or a converse deficiency of progesterone inhibits thyroid function. Many menopausal women using estrogen replacement therapy may develop the symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Menopausal women who are already taking medication for hypothyroidism may also need to increase their dosage if they choose to use hormone-replacement therapy .
- High stress hormone cortisol may interfere with the conversion of thyroid hormone into the active form that closely regulates metabolism.

Spotlight On Aging: Hypothyroidism In Older People
Many older people have some degree of hypothyroidism. About 10% of women and 6% of men are affected.
Typical symptoms, such as weight gain, muscle cramps, tingling of the hands, and the inability to tolerate cold, are less common among older people. When such symptoms do occur among older people, they are less obvious.
Older people may also have less typical symptoms. For example, they may lose weight, become confused, and have a decreased appetite, joint stiffness, joint and muscle pains, weakness, and a tendency to fall.

The World Health Organization estimates that;approximately;two;billion people worldwide are deficient in iodine. In the U.S., however, the official stance regarding iodine can be confusing.
The United States Centers for Disease Control states that iodine deficiency disorders such as goiter, cretinism, stillbirth, spontaneous abortion, and retarded physical and intellectual development have been virtually eliminated through the iodization of salt.
A consumer reading the above may think that iodine deficiency in America is a thing of the past. In fact,;similar statements may have caused you to dismiss iodine deficiency as a factor for what may be going on with your health. It also doesnt help that most conventional doctors dont give iodine deficiency a second thought.

It Can Mess With The Circadian Rhythm
You may not know this, but the thyroid gland also controls your bodys circadian rhythm. If youre unlucky enough to have suffered from insomnia for any length of time and have tried several methods already to manage your problem without much success, then youll be aware of what the circadian rhythm is.
It is the bodys internal clock that regulates the sleep-wake cycles and allows you to stay awake during the daytime and sleep at night.
Research studies have provided evidence to show that the thyroid plays a role in regulating the bodys internal clock as well as REM sleep. Even the secretion and release of thyroid-stimulating hormones and thyroxine follows a circadian rhythm.
A disturbed thyroid gland can alter the pattern of the circadian rhythm thus resulting in a disrupted sleep-wake cycle.
Swap Mindless Scrolling For Something Engaging
What youre exposed to when you wake up, impacts your first thoughts and feelings of the day. Instead of reaching straight for your phone and scrolling mindlessly, perhaps seeing some negative, political or moaning posts upon waking, stick some uplifting music on and ban social media for the first hour of your day.
Ill switch it up and sometimes listen to music or an uplifting podcast depending on my mood. I may even play a YouTube video whilst getting myself ready for the day one which is humorous, makes me smile or otherwise engages my brain better than non-beneficial scrolling on social media.
Music can be really powerful, especially your favourite feel-good songs, so create a playlist of them and make them part of your morning routine. Check out my playlists for thyroid patients here.
I also avoid watching the news first thing in the morning, as I find it to be a major source of negativity and dont wish to hear all the things going wrong in the world when Im still gearing myself up for the day. I can always catch up on the news later on.

What Are The More Serious Complications Of Hyperthyroidism
People with advanced and extreme hyperthyroidism face a ramshackle of problems, some of them life-threatening. The good news, though, is many patients do not reach this level of severity. Complications can include:

When To See A Doctor
Hypothyroidism develops slowly, so many people wont notice their symptoms for years. It also shares symptoms with a wide range of other medical conditions, so your doctor will likely order additional testing. The same is true of hyperthyroidism and most diagnoses for an overactive thyroid also entail multiple blood tests. For many older patients, hyperthyroidism can present differently and may be mistaken for depression or dementia because it can cause similar symptoms such as loss of appetite and social withdrawals.
These additional blood tests may evaluate your thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and thyrotropin counts to determine whether your thyroid is overactive or underactive. People with hypothyroidism may be prescribed levothyroxine, an artificial hormone intended to boost your thyroid function, and tested six to eight weeks after they begin taking the medication to see if their counts have improved. Your Thyroid And Your Sleep
If your thyroid makes too much or too little of certain hormones, your body chemistry can get out of balance. That can affect your circadian rhythm — the internal body clock thatâs responsible for your sleep-wake cycle.
If your thyroid makes too little hormone, itâs a more common condition called hypothyroidism. You might have trouble falling asleep or not be able to stay asleep long enough to feel fully rested. Hypothyroidism also can affect your sleep by making you feel too cold or causing joint or muscle pain.
Some people with hypothyroidism also feel extremely sleepy in the daytime, to the point that itâs hard to stay awake. That condition is called hypersomnia.

Hyperthyroid And Panic Attacks
Hyperthyroid, on the other hand, is directly linked to panic attacks. In fact, panic attacks are often considered a symptom of this type of thyroid disease, and in rare cases it’s considered a warning sign of possibly an undiagnosed thyroid problem.
Now, before you decide to diagnose yourself with a thyroid issue, you should know that panic attacks from hyperthyroid are identical to panic attacks simply from anxiety, and both appear to come for no reason. Don’t self-diagnose yourself with a thyroid issue simply because it’s hard to believe that you have panic attacks. That’s what panic attacks are, and nearly everyone believes they have a thyroid problem first only to find out that they simply have panic attacks. Remember, testing for hyperthyroid is easy and can take place in any doctor’s office.
But hyperthyroid also does genuinely appear to cause an increase in anxiety, possibly with panic attacks. Why this occurs is very complex. In some cases, it may simply be a physical reaction to the symptoms of hyperthyroid, where you react to them with extreme anxiety. Symptoms include:
