How It Works For Hypothyroidism
With hypothyroidism, your body doesnt make enough thyroid hormones. The main thyroid hormones in your body are T3 and T4. By taking Synthroid, youre replacing your bodys T4. And your body then uses T4 to make T3.
Synthroid helps to bring your thyroid hormone levels back to a normal range. And it also helps reduce your symptoms of hypothyroidism.
It Has A Better Track Record Compared To Levothyroxine/synthroid
Surprisingly, this is not only my own personal opinion but also the opinion of certain clinical studies.
Researchers have already done some of the heavy lifting for us so let’s evaluate one study to get a better idea of how people respond to medications such as Armour thyroid.
In this study , researchers placed patients on either levothyroxine or thyroid extract .
They kept these patients on these medications for 16 weeks and then swapped them to another medication.
So some patients were placed on levothyroxine first for 16 weeks and then transitioned to thyroid extract for another 16 weeks.
The other group of patients were on thyroid extract first for 16 weeks and then transitioned to levothyroxine for another 16 weeks.
At the end of this 32 week period they then simply asked patients how they felt on the different medications.
What did they find?
They found that those people who were on thyroid extract experienced more weight loss compared to the people who were only levothyroxine alone.
The study also concluded that about half of the people or around 48.6 percent of people had a preference for DTE over levothyroxine.
They also showed that patients lost around 4 pounds simply switching thyroid medication and had a subjective improvement in their symptoms .
One important factor that this study revealed was that people who are overweight and those with a higher reverse T3 level tend to prefer NDT over T4.
This isn’t an exact science but something to consider.
Combining Your Synthetic Thyroid Hormone With Other Medication
Just as there shouldnt be food in your stomach when you take your hypothyroidism medication, its also important to avoid taking any other medication at the same time.
Specifically, antacids, calcium, cholesterol drugs, and iron supplements can each interfere with the way the thyroid hormone is absorbed. So, you should take these particular drugs four hours before or after taking your thyroid medication, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Most other medication can typically be taken 45 minutes to an hour after your hypothyroidism treatment, Bianco says.

Taking Your Thyroid Medication With Meals And Snacks
The synthetic thyroid hormone wont be absorbed properly unless you take it on an empty stomach and wait 45 to 60 minutes afterward before eating, Bianco says.
The simplest way to accomplish this is to take your thyroid medication first thing in the morning. Bianco says he has patients who set an alarm for 5 a.m., take the medication, and go back to sleep to ensure theyre taking it on an empty stomach. If you choose to take your thyroid medication at night, its important that you dont eat for four hours before taking it.

Could This Be The Cause Of A Sudden Weight Gain
Last week I was catching up with a friend who I havent seen or heard from in a while and she told me something alarming. She said Vani I havent changed my diet, or my exercise routine, but Ive gained 15 pounds in the last 2 months! I gained it all because of stress! Shes currently working on a big project and was worried about her sudden weight gain. When she went to the doctor, the doctor checked her cortisol levels. She found out, they were through the roof!

Armour Thyroid Contains Both T4 And T3
This one probably isn’t a surprise for many of you but it’s still worth pointing out.
Armour thyroid falls into the class of Natural Desiccated Thyroid medications.
These medications are notoriously beneficial because they contain more than just the standard T4 thyroid hormone in medications such as levothyroxine and Synthroid.
Armour thyroid contains BOTH T4 and T3.
Each grain of Armour thyroid contains 38mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3.
This ratio is roughly about 77:23 which is somewhat close to the 80:20 ratio of T4:T3 that your thyroid gland produces naturally.
Some doctors will suggest that Armour thyroid should not be used because they contain too much T3 compared to what the body produces naturally.
But more recent studies show that healthy thyroid glands produce around 80% T4 and around 20% T3.
Some doctors try to suggest that the thyroid gland produces 95% T4 and 5% T3 but these values are not supported by more recent studies.
Why should you care that it contains T3?
I think the most important reason is that T3 is by far the most biologically active thyroid hormone .
It’s roughly 300x more potent than T4 at stimulating the thyroid receptors on your cells.
Pretty much everything you want thyroid hormone to do stems from the direct actions of T3 thyroid hormone.
Why isn’t it used more frequently?
Most doctors are simply not comfortable using it or feel that it is too powerful or too difficult to dose.

Hypothyroidism Medication Mistakes To Avoid
Taking your thyroid hormone as prescribed can help you stave off the unpleasant symptoms of low thyroid.
The goal of hypothyroidism treatment is to replace the thyroid hormone that you are not able to produce. This helps you feel more energized and back to your normal self, says Antonio Bianco, MD, PhD, a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago in Illinois.
After youre diagnosed with hypothyroidism, your healthcare provider will likely prescribe a synthetic hormone that helps stabilize your thyroid levels, Dr. Bianco says. But there are some guidelines for taking the medication that you need to know about.
Heres how to avoid the most common hypothyroidism medication mistakes.
Is It Safe To Breastfeed While Im Taking Beta
Certain beta-blockers are safe to use while youre breastfeeding because only a small amount shows up in breast milk. The lowest possible dose to relieve your symptoms is best. Only a small amount of thyroid hormone medicine reaches your baby through breast milk, so its safe to take while youre breastfeeding. However, in the case of antithyroid drugs, your doctor will most likely limit your dose to no more than 20 milligrams of methimazole or, less commonly, 400 mg of PTU.

What If I Have Other Medical Conditions
Hypothyroidism can have profound effects on the rest of your body, so many people with low thyroid levels might have other conditions.
Low levels of thyroid hormone can also increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Thats because thyroid hormone helps your body manage its insulin and blood sugar levels. By getting your thyroid hormone levels back to normal, you can improve the way your body processes insulin and blood sugar.

Armour Thyroid: What Is It And How Does It Work
About 4.6 percent, or one out of every 20 people ages 12 and older, are affected by an underactive thyroid gland, also known as hypothyroidism. This common hormonal imbalance is more likely to affect women than men, and adults over the age of 60 are also more likely to be diagnosed with the disorder.
An underactive thyroid is problematic because the body requires balanced levels of thyroid hormones to carry out numerous bodily functions, including metabolism and the growth and repair of cells. Patients with an imbalance of thyroid hormones may need medications like Armour Thyroid, a form of dessicated thyroid, to restore hormonal balance and minimize the unpleasant symptoms associated with hypothyroidism.
Because hypothyroidism is so common in the United States, synthetic thyroid hormones like Armour Thyroid are among the most popularly prescribed medications in the United States, but how the medication works is not commonly understood. What is Armour Thyroid and how does it work?

Alternatives To Armour Thyroid
Natural desiccated thyroid is the original treatment for hypothyroidism. It has been used for more than a century.
In the mid-1900s, a synthetic version of thyroxine one of the two primary hormones the thyroid gland produces was developed. This synthetic form of thyroxine is called levothyroxine or l-thyroxine.
Even though natural desiccated thyroid contains two key thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine as well as other elements found in an organic thyroid gland, levothyroxine has become the preferred treatment. Brand names for levothyroxine include:
How Does Synthroid Relate To T3 And T4
Synthroid is a man-made form of the natural thyroid hormone called T4. But your thyroid actually makes two main hormones: T3 and T4.
If your body doesnt make enough thyroid hormones, your doctor may prescribe Synthroid for you. In this case, Synthroid is used to replace your natural T4. Then, your body uses T4 to make T3.
Taking Synthroid can help bring your thyroid hormones to healthy levels. And the drug helps to regulate your metabolism . Your metabolism affects everything from your digestion to your bodys growth and repair to even your temperature.
