How Can I Treat My Thyroid Problem Naturally
If a thyroid test and a physicianâs evaluation indicates youâve got a thyroid condition, itâs important to follow the medical advice of your healthcare provider. It isnât possible to heal your thyroid solely by making dietary changes.

First and foremost, focus on eating a nutritious diet, since this will keep delivering benefits even after your thyroid hormone level has balanced out due to medical treatment.
Also, since both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism change the way your body metabolizes food, look to increase your fiber intake, as this can improve your digestion. Fiber-rich foods include whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Make sure to get plenty of nutrients, and look to proteins from lean sources such as fish, or plant-based options like beans or nuts. You should also eat healthy fat sources, such as olive oil or omega-3 fatty acids.
Of course, managing your thyroid health naturally also means avoiding unhealthy foods. Specifically, try staying away from âbad fatsâ like trans fats, which are typically found in products like margarine, processed foods, and hydrogenated oils.
How Are Thyroid Issues Treated

What Foods Are Bad For Thyroid Function
Now that weâve highlighted foods to boost thyroid function, letâs focus on foods to avoid if you have a thyroid condition.
If you have hypothyroidism
In general, stay away from foods that are high in soy protein, since they may interfere with your bodyâs ability to absorb replacement thyroid hormones.
You may have also heard that you should avoid cruciferous vegetables such as spinach, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, turnips, and Brussels sprouts.
Itâs important to know that these foods, by themselves, probably wonât harm your thyroid function. However, they are considered goitrogenic foods because they affect your thyroidâs ability to absorb iodine, which can lower thyroid hormone production and increase your risk for goiters.
What does that mean for you? If youâre not getting enough iodine in your diet, or if you know you have low iodine levels, you may want to talk to your healthcare provider about avoiding these vegetables.
But if you have hypothyroidism, or are at increased risk for goiters due to family history, you donât have to avoid these vegetables entirely. Instead, try to mix up the vegetable servings you eat each day, so you arenât getting a whopping intake of goitrogens in any one meal. Also note that if you juice these vegetables, youâll vastly increase their concentration of thiocyanates, which is the chemical in goitrogenic vegetables that interferes with your thyroid gland function.
If you have hyperthyroidism
Diet For Underactive Thyroid
I was already eating a healthy diet before finding out about my thyroid problems, so diet was not the entire problem for me. However;here are some additional dietary changes that can help support thyroid health:
- Avoid inflammatory foods. This can include sweeteners, processed foods, grains, soy, and dairy, but it can also include anything youre sensitive to.
- Focus on eating quality meats and fish. Grass-fed and wild-caught meats and seafood have better nutrient profiles and dont contain possible inflammatory problems like antibiotics or mycotoxins.
- Eat lots of green leafy vegetables cooked in coconut oil. Vegetables are rich in thyroid-friendly nutrients and fiber, which can help with constipation caused by hypothyroidism.
- Eat fruits too, but focus on lower-glycemic ones . This is especially important if you have high glucose or insulin.
- Drink bone broth a few times a day. It is rich in gut-healing nutrients, including collagen and gelatin.
- Dont go low-carb to try to force weight loss. While you want to avoid high-starch carbs or those that are sugary, your thyroid needs the right kind of carbohydrates to make hormones.

Take A Good Probiotic
Your gut bacteria play a central role in regulating your thyroid hormones. Your gut is one of the biggest reservoirs for thyroid hormones, and good gut bacteria convert T3, a thyroid hormone, into T4, the main hormone that’s often low in hypothyroidism.;
A high-quality probiotic can help balance your gut bacteria and support the conversion of thyroid hormones. Look for a probiotic with Lactobacillus bacteria, particularly;L. acidophilus and L. rhamnosus. They’re some of the most beneficial bacteria for supporting thyroid function.
Natural Remedies For Hypothyroidism
The standard treatment for hypothyroidism is taking daily thyroid hormone replacement medication. Of course, medications often come with side effects, and forgetting to take a pill might lead to more symptoms.
In some cases, natural remedies may cause fewer side effects and fit into your overall lifestyle better.
The goal of natural remedies or alternative medicine is to fix the root cause of the thyroid problem. Thyroid problems sometimes start as the result of:
Changing your diet and taking an herbal supplement are two ways you can help your thyroid condition. These options may have fewer side effects than taking thyroid medication.
Also, taking an herbal supplement to help address a low or underactive thyroid may be helpful for people who arent responding well to medications.
Consider the following five natural remedies as additions or alternatives to your treatment plan.
, selenium is a trace element that plays a part in thyroid hormone metabolism.
Many foods contain selenium, including:
- Brazil nuts
- grass-fed beef
Hashimotos thyroiditis, an immune system attack on the thyroid, often reduces the bodys selenium supply. Supplementing this trace element has shown to help balance thyroxine, or T4, levels in some people.
Its important to talk with your doctor about how much selenium may be right for you since every person is different.

Limit Raw Cruciferous Veggies
Although cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, cauliflower and are superfoods packed with important vitamins and minerals, eating them raw could be bad for your thyroid. They contain goitrogens, which disrupt thyroid function and interfere with iodine uptake. But you don’t have to cut them out completely . Since eating them raw delivers the most goitrogens possible, make sure you’re steaming or sautéing your cruciferous veggies before chowing down.
Hypothyroidism: What Is It And What Are The Symptoms
The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located in the lower front of the neck. The thyroids job is to make hormones which are secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body. Thyroid hormone helps the body make energy, metabolize, regulate temperature, and keeps the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working as they should. When the body isnt making enough thyroid hormone, symptoms can include fatigue, weight gain, hair thinning, dry skin, and depression.
Experts believe that between;40 and 60 percent of people with thyroid disease do not know;they have it.
Low thyroid hormone can also cause more serious symptoms like difficulty sleeping, changes in menstruation, or gastrointestinal symptoms. Because symptoms of hypothyroidism can resemble those of other diseases and vary widely from person to person, patients may not recognize them as a problem warranting exploration or treatment. Experts believe that between 40 and 60 percent of people with thyroid disease do not know they have it.

These are all signs of an underactive thyroid , the butterfly-shaped gland located in your throat that’s responsible for your metabolism, important hormones, body temperature, and how you use energy. It also influences the function of vital organs, such as your heart, brain, liver, and kidneys.
On the flip side, an overactive thyroid is marked by increased nervousness, anxiety, irregular heartbeat, and sudden weight loss. People who have hyperthyroidism are also at risk of developing anemia, which is an iron deficiency that leads to a lack of healthy red blood cells.

How To Speed Up Your Thyroid To Lose Weight
The thyroid is a small gland located just below your Adam’s apple. The gland is a powerful organ that regulates the production of hormones that control metabolism. Many people associate thyroid activity with weight loss and gain. The truth is that your thyroid can affect your health and fitness level. However, occurrences of obesity based solely on an ineffective thyroid gland are rare, according to the Mayo Clinic. Weight gain is usually the result of poor diet and inactivity. Determining the cause of your weight problems will help you learn how to control your situation and pinpoint possible problems with your thyroid.
Get your thyroid-hormone levels tested. Your doctor can order a blood test that will determine if your thyroid needs to speed up. A sluggish thyroid may require medication to stimulate it. The doctor can also prescribe a synthetic form of the necessary hormones to help manage your metabolism. The first step is to find evidence that your thyroid is part of the problem.
Increase the amount of vegetable-based protein in your diet. Dr. Edward Bauman recommends, in an article for Thyroid-Info, a diet rich in seeds and seafood to help normalize and regulate the thyroid. Incorporate seafood into at least one meal a day. Add snacks that include pumpkin and flaxseeds.
The Thyroid Reset Diet
This is by far the most prominent way to increase your thyroid hormone. Featuring multiple controlled human studies, which people with severe thyroid disease were found to have their thyroid hormones come back online again.

I am so excited to talk about the book for that result, because it is all about the results and how these people were able to regain their thyroid function. It is truly so great to see!
In the course of 8 weeks or 12 weeks, somewhere between 60-80% of people really regained normal thyroid function just by lowering their iodine.
Those are the numbers that got all the way normal, but if you looped in those who improved a lot, now were looking at 90-97% of people from the studies.
The odds of improving are near definite. To date, that is the only thing to have shown to reverse thyroid disease on such an incredibly consistent basis. I would love for you to check it out.

Combining Natural Therapies With Conventional Therapies
I spent the majority of this article discussing natural therapies but I also think it’s important to at least discuss conventional therapies as well.;
The reason this is important is that I find that many patients find the best results when they combine conventional medicine with that of natural and alternative therapies.;
But what exactly do I mean by conventional thyroid therapies?
Perhaps the primary treatment is the use of prescription thyroid medication.;
Prescription thyroid medications are used to provide your body with thyroid hormone directly .;
Thyroid medications are very powerful and provide your body with exactly what it is missing.;
The good news is that you can often use natural therapies AND thyroid medication at the same time.;
Using this strategy may allow you to reduce the amount of thyroid medication that you need by helping your thyroid function naturally.;
Indeed, many of the studies I’ve listed above have shown just that! A decrease in demand for thyroid medication as people improve their diet and add in exercise.;
It’s also important to understand that even though you may want to only undergo natural therapies that may not be possible for all people.;
What if you have had your thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer? Or what if you’ve had your thyroid ablated because of Graves’ disease?
These are two situations in which you will be reliant upon thyroid medication for the rest of your life.;
