Our Approach To Natural Thyroid Treatment

Many doctors begin hypothyroidism treatment with a check for low thyroid stimulating hormone levels. However, during our work with patients, weve found that doesnt give us a full picture of your thyroid.

When a patient comes to us with symptoms of hypothyroidism, the first thing we look for is Hashimotos disease. Hashimotos disease is an autoimmune condition that accounts for 90% of hypothyroidism cases.

Causes of Hashimotos are varied, but we administer blood tests, urine tests, and/or elimination diets to understand your unique diagnosis. Our experience has taught us that treating the root causes of Hashimotos is how to cure hypothyroidism permanently it also means each patient gets a tailored treatment plan, and all treatments dont work for all people.;

When identifying the cause of Hashimotos disease, we look at the following six risk factors:

  • Hormone imbalance If your hormone levels are imbalanced , this can trigger an underactive thyroid.
  • Food sensitivity Food allergens can cause a hormone imbalance or even hypothyroidism. Celiac disease has been linked with increased risk of autoimmune disease, such as Hashimotos. Other food sensitivities may be less obvious but may be just as significant.;
  • Infections Tick-borne infections and viral infections may lead to an underactive thyroid.
  • Other causes include thyroid cancer, hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills, and overtreatment of hyperthyroidism .

    Tsh Range That Correlates With Thriving

    Dr. Amy Myers: 1-2 UIU/ML or lower. Armour or compounded T3 can artificially suppress TSH. An alternative to Armour would be desiccated bovine thyroid.

    Dr. Aviva Romm: Many integrative and functional medicine doctors find that their patients feel their best at an upper limit of 1.5-2 mU/L.

    Dr. Izabella Wentz: .5-2 uIU/ml Thyroid medications containing T3 can skew thyroid function test results, making people seem overdosed when they are indeed dosed correctly.Note that Armour is made from pigs. An alternative to Armour would be desiccated bovine thyroid.

    Why would TSH be high? Dr. Romm has a great illustration. Think of it like this: You are TSH. Your best friends house is the thyroid gland. When you go to visit your friend you knock on her front door. If she doesnt answer, what do you do? You knock louder to get a response. In just the same way, the TSH amps up to knock louder, hoping to get an answer.

    Occasionally;TSH levels can be low. According to Dr. Romm, stress can suppress the pituitary gland enough to interfere with the production of TSH. If that is the case, youll want to address;adrenal function first, as its an upstream problem affecting thyroid.

    What Causes Thyroid Problems

    Thyroid issues can be caused by a variety of factors, Safdieh says, and for many people, there is a genetic component. But in the case of autoimmune thyroid disorders, there is always a trigger that causes onset. If this is the case, healing your thyroid naturally is possible.;

    Potential triggers include nutrient deficiencies, flouride and heavy metal toxicity, a major illness or virus, pregnancy and childbirth, and stress.

    That last factor is a big one, particularly for hypothyroidism. Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys and are also part of the endocrine system. One of their functions is to help manage stress response. Whether its from chronic exhaustion or constant anxiety, too much stress on the adrenal glands can trigger hypothyroidism, Safdieh says.;

    Gluten May Trigger An Attack On The Thyroid

    Approximately 20 million Americans have hypothyroidismwhich means low thyroid function. One in every eight women will struggle with thyroid issues in their lifetime. Nearly 90% of all thyroid issues are autoimmune with the most common being Hashimotos.

    Almost all low-thyroid issues are usually autoimmune and its ideal to look at the triggers occurring causing an attack on the thyroid. Gluten is one of the main triggers.

    When gluten runs through the gut lining into the bloodstream, your immune system will label the gluten as an invader and cause destruction. The issue here is that the immune system mistakes the thyroid for gluten, causing it to become attacked.

    What About Her Diet

    Tracy didnt follow any particular regime and often missed breakfast. Sugar cravings were a regular occurrence for her.

    I wont quote specific numbers because every lab has their own ranges for these tests.; Make sure you fall within range, especially for the antibody tests.; As for T4 and T3, make sure you test Free T4 and Free T3 as opposed to Total T4 and Total T3 as the latter dont reflect how your body is utilizing the hormone.; They bind to other proteins, which may paint an inflated picture of how much there is for your body to use.
