If you have the entire gland removed, you will get hypothyroidism. For some people, if only part of it is taken out, the part that’s left behind may still be able to make enough thyroid hormone.

Optimize Iron & Ferritin

Adequate iron levels are required for optimal thyroid function.

This means that if you have low iron then your thyroid function may be impaired and contributing to your current set of symptoms.

One easy way to assess for iron in your body is with the use of ferritin.

Ferritin can be easily ordered through routine lab work and can give you an idea of the status of iron in your body.

Low ferritin may indicate that you have low iron stores while high iron may indicate that you have high iron stores.

When it comes to iron you want to try and get just enough.

That’s why I refer to Iron as a “Goldilocks” kind of nutrient.

Too much may cause iron overload and lead to inflammation while too few may lead to impaired thyroid metabolism.

When you are evaluating your serum ferritin you’ll want to look for levels in the 40-60 ng/mL range.

First, lets review what TSH is and what a normal level is :

TSH is a hormone that the pituitary sends out to tell the thyroid how much or how little thyroid hormones to produce.

Please note: TSH is a pituitary hormone, not a thyroid hormone. TSH levels tell you what your pituitary is up to, but it doesnt tell you how much thyroid hormone your body is producing.

Everyone is biochemically individual, but at our practice weve found that a TSH level between 0.5-2.0 is the range where people feel healthy and vibrant.

So, a low TSH level isnt necessarily a thyroid problem. Instead, its often an imbalance in the HPA axis. Your practitioners job is to figure out why there is an imbalance.

A low TSH doesnt always mean the body is in a state of hyperthyroidism:

Ive seen many clients who had low TSH but their fT4 and fT3 were either low, or in normal ranges. This is why you always want to have a full thyroid panel.

Treatment Based On Severity

If your TSH levels are low but still detectable and you dont have complications, you may not receive immediate treatment. Instead, your doctor may choose to retest your TSH levels every few months until they return to normal or your doctor is satisfied that your condition is stable.

Treatment may be required if your TSH levels fall into Grade I or Grade II and youre in the following risk groups:

  • youre over 65 years of age
  • you have cardiovascular disease
  • you have symptoms suggestive of hyperthyroidism

Your treatment will depend on what type of condition is causing your subclinical hyperthyroidism.
