How Your Thyroid Works

How Can You Naturally Increase Thyroid Hormones?

Your thyroid gland is a small gland, normally weighing less than one ounce, located in the front of the neck. It is made up of two halves, called lobes, that lie along the windpipe and are joined together by a narrow band of thyroid tissue, known as the isthmus.

The thyroid is situated just below your “Adams apple” or larynx. During development the thyroid gland originates in the back of the tongue, but it normally migrates to the front of the neck before birth. Sometimes it fails to migrate properly and is located high in the neck or even in the back of the tongue . This is very rare. At other times it may migrate too far and ends up in the chest .

The function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine, found in many foods, and convert it into thyroid hormones:thyroxine and triiodothyronine . Thyroid cells are the only cells in the body which can absorb iodine. These cells combine iodine and the amino acid tyrosine to make T3 and T4. T3 and T4 are then released into the blood stream and are transported throughout the body where they control metabolism .

The pituitary senses this and responds by decreasing its TSH production. One can imagine the thyroid gland as a furnace and the pituitary gland as the thermostat.

The Thyroid Reset Diet

This is by far the most prominent way to increase your thyroid hormone. Featuring multiple controlled human studies, which people with severe thyroid disease were found to have their thyroid hormones come back online again.

You can learn more about The Thyroid Reset Diet, and what its all about, by clicking here .

I am so excited to talk about the book for that result, because it is all about the results and how these people were able to regain their thyroid function. It is truly so great to see!

In the course of 8 weeks or 12 weeks, somewhere between 60-80% of people really regained normal thyroid function just by lowering their iodine.

Those are the numbers that got all the way normal, but if you looped in those who improved a lot, now were looking at 90-97% of people from the studies.

The odds of improving are near definite. To date, that is the only thing to have shown to reverse thyroid disease on such an incredibly consistent basis. I would love for you to check it out.

What Is The Endocrine System

The endocrine system is in charge of coordinating the relationship between different organs and hormones, which are chemicals that are released into your bloodstream from cells within your endocrine glands.

Hormones are secreted by various glands and organs, including your thyroid, adrenals, pituitary, ovaries, testicles and pancreas. The entire endocrine system works together to control the level of hormones circulating throughout your body, and if one or more is even slightly imbalanced, it can cause widespread health problems affecting growth, sexual development and function, sleep, metabolism and hunger.

Once your hormones are in circulation, they target specific tissues or cells by binding to receptors that are located inside the cell or on its surface. These hormones work as chemical messengers and play a key role in your bodys daily functions.

The endocrine system is made up of many glands, including the pituitary gland or master gland thats responsible for sending information from your brain to other glands in your body. The pituitary gland also produces many hormones that travel throughout the body and have different important functions.

The pituitary gland is made up of two different tissue types: the anterior pituitary that synthesizes and releases classic hormones, and the posterior pituitary gland that secretes neurohormones that are made in the hypothalamus.

Even A Little Iodine Is A Lot

10 Nutrients to Improve Thyroid Function

What we have found out is that the biggest driver for initiating thyroid disease is extra iodine, and that is perpetuated by even normal amounts of iodine in your system.

In fact, it really doesnt take a whopping amount of iodine every day. It takes a little more than you can tolerate at one point in time. Then, even normal amounts can be too much.

That said, this doesnt necessarily mean that the gland is damaged, its more that the situation has not been rectified. Less iodine can be the ideal place to start.

Make Friends With Magnesium

Magnesium is another essential element that helps our body perform certain key functions. However, experts say most Americans are deficient in magnesium, and that caffeine and sugar-rich foods can actually reduce magnesium in your system.

Magnesium is important in converting iodine into thyroid hormones . That means not getting magnesium can lead to an underactive thyroid, which has symptoms including weight gain, general fatigue, dry skin, and even depression. While magnesium is available in supplements, also try spinach, sweet corn, avocado, shrimp, raisins, bananas, and broccoli.

When youre dealing with low thyroid and are already tired, exercise might sound like the last thing you want to think about. But you need to be able to move your body to promote health.

Still, endless cardio is probably going to hurt more than it will help. Exercise does cause a certain amount of stress in the bodybut after that, it leads to a reduction in stress. This isnt the case when youre overtaxing your body with exercise.

Some of the best ways that you can support your body with exercise when your thyroid is low are:

  • Yoga: Research finds that it helps reduce hypothyroid symptoms and lowers stress.
  • Rebounding: I spend a few minutes a day jumping on a mini-trampoline to get my blood flowing and increase lymph drainage.
  • Walking: You dont have to power walk to get benefit from a morning stroll or a family walk after dinner.
  • Strength training: Weight-bearing exercises are good for bone density but theyre also known for being great for those who have thyroid problems.

Consuming an adequate amount of protein is extremely important.

Dietary protein provides essential amino acids that your body cant make on its own and must be consumed every day in order to maintain muscle, bone and skin health.

In addition, protein influences the release of hormones that control appetite and food intake.

Research has shown that eating protein decreases levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin and stimulates the production of hormones that help you feel full, including PYY and GLP-1 .

In one study, men produced 20% more GLP-1 and 14% more PYY after eating a high-protein meal than after eating a meal that contained a normal amount of protein.

Whats more, participants hunger ratings decreased by 25% more after the high-protein meal compared to the normal-protein meal .

In another study, women who consumed a diet containing 30% protein experienced an increase in GLP-1 and greater feelings of fullness than when they ate a diet containing 10% protein.

Whats more, they experienced an increase in metabolism and fat burning .

To optimize hormone health, experts recommend consuming a minimum of 2030 grams of protein per meal (

This is easy to do by including a serving of these high-protein foods at each meal.

Consuming adequate protein triggers the production of hormones that suppress appetite and help you feel full. Aim for a minimum of 2030 grams of protein per meal.

Increase Thyroid Hormone Production In Your Body By Eating Zinc

Zinc also plays a role similar to selenium, which is the activation of thyroid hormones. This mineral also aids in regulating thyroid-stimulating hormones. TSH hormone is essential as it tells your thyroid gland when to secrete hormones. The answer to your question, Why thyroid level increases? is dependent on the functioning of TSH.

Have foods rich in zinc like:

    • Red meat
    • Seafood

    Look Out For Perchlorates

How To Naturally Get Off Thyroid Hormone Therapy With Near Infrared

Perchlorates are odorless, colorless salts that dissolve in water and are found naturally in certain parts of the United States. Theyre mainly manufactured for explosives, fireworks, and rocket motors, and theyve contaminated the water supplies in areas throughout the nation.

Because a large percentage of U.S. produce is irrigated with perchlorate-contaminated water, perchlorate is also prevalent in the U.S. food supply and many Americans are exposed to low levels, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

Since high levels of perchlorates may reduce your thyroid hormone levels by blocking your thyroid from taking up iodine, which it needs to produce thyroid hormones, its sensible to stay up on your areas perchlorates contamination and maximum state levels for perchlorates in the water. Also, if you use well water, consider having it tested for perchlorates contamination.

Do Thyroid Hormone Supplements Have Side Effects

As long as you purchase high quality supplements you should be able to avoid most of the side effects that some people report when taking thyroid supplements.

    As a word of caution:

Some thyroid supplements may contain portions of thyroid glands from animals or other sources that contain ACTIVE thyroid hormones.

This is the equivalent to taking a prescription medication in the United States.

I strongly recommend against the use of supplements such as these because they WILL interfere with your HPA axis and may make your body reliant upon the supplements.

For this reason it is best to avoid productions that come from questionable sources and stick to nutrients and precursors that can be identified and that are known to not contain active thyroid hormones.

As a thyroid patient you will also want to be weary of cheap inactive ingredients which may also cause negative reactions in your body…

What Foods Are Bad For Thyroid Function

Now that weâve highlighted foods to boost thyroid function, letâs focus on foods to avoid if you have a thyroid condition.

    If you have hypothyroidism

In general, stay away from foods that are high in soy protein, since they may interfere with your bodyâs ability to absorb replacement thyroid hormones.

You may have also heard that you should avoid cruciferous vegetables such as spinach, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, turnips, and Brussels sprouts.

Itâs important to know that these foods, by themselves, probably wonât harm your thyroid function. However, they are considered goitrogenic foods because they affect your thyroidâs ability to absorb iodine, which can lower thyroid hormone production and increase your risk for goiters.

What does that mean for you? If youâre not getting enough iodine in your diet, or if you know you have low iodine levels, you may want to talk to your healthcare provider about avoiding these vegetables.

But if you have hypothyroidism, or are at increased risk for goiters due to family history, you donât have to avoid these vegetables entirely. Instead, try to mix up the vegetable servings you eat each day, so you arenât getting a whopping intake of goitrogens in any one meal. Also note that if you juice these vegetables, youâll vastly increase their concentration of thiocyanates, which is the chemical in goitrogenic vegetables that interferes with your thyroid gland function.

How Is The Dose Of Thyroid Hormone Chosen

When you are first started on thyroid hormone, the initial dose is carefully selected based on information such as your weight, age, and other medical conditions. The dose may need to be adjusted periodically by your physician to keep the thyroid levels normal. Your physician will make sure the thyroid hormone dose is correct by performing periodic physical examination and checking TSH levels.

There are several brand names of thyroid hormone available. Although these all contain the same levothyroxine , there are different inactive ingredients in each of the brands. In general, it is best for you to stay on the same brand, or the same manufacturer of a generic for consistency. If a change in brand or manufacturer is unavoidable, you should make your physician aware of the change, so that your thyroid hormone levels can be rechecked. If your pharmacy or insurance plan changes your thyroid hormone to a generic preparation, it is important for you to inform your physician.
