The Connection Between High Cholesterol And Your Thyroid

Do you have high cholesterol?

Are you blaming your diet?

Not so fast…

Low thyroid is a COMMON cause of high cholesterol and it may explain your cholesterol issues.

Before you run and jump on a statin or another cholesterol medication make sure that you rule out your thyroid as the primary CAUSE of your high cholesterol.

This may not be obvious to you as a patient but it should be incredibly obvious to your doctor.

You’d be surprised at how many people have THIS experience instead of the screening for low thyroid as I described should happen above.

But this situation gets even more complicated:

High cholesterol is often an EARLY warning sign of low thyroid but your doctor may miss it if they are hyperfocused only on the TSH.

If youve been following my work for a while, you probably know my opinion of statin drugs. Here are just a few of the articles Ive written on statins:

But it turns out that statin use is particularly concerning when the cause of high cholesterol is poor thyroid function. This is due to the effects of statins on creatine kinase levels.

Creatine kinase is an enzyme expressed in many different tissues throughout the body, though its probably most well-known for its action in muscle cells. CK is responsible for adding a phosphate to creatine to form phosphocreatine, which serves as an energy reservoir and allows for the quick release of energy in times of need.

Both statins and hypothyroidism result in CK release into the blood, and the cumulative effect is severe CK elevation . This can potentially amplify the adverse side effects of statins.

Yet, in reviewing the relevant medical records of 77 patients treated receiving statins in a hospital, a team of medical researchers discovered that only 23 percent of patients had received a thyroid panel before beginning statin treatment. Worse yet, 12 percent of patients with overt hypothyroidism received statins without receiving a thyroid panel or hypothyroid diagnosis .

The authors commented on their findings, emphasizing the need for routine thyroid screening in patients with lipid abnormalities:

Plasma Cholesterol Reduction In Ldlr/ Mice Treated With T3 And T2

T3 and T2 treatments caused a marked reduction in total cholesterol . Feeding control mice with a WTD led to a marked increase in cholesterol from 160 to 1336 mg/dl. Treatment with T3 had a dramatic effect on circulating cholesterol, which was reduced approximately 70% to 406 mg/dl. Triglyceride levels, in contrast, were similar in control and T3-treated animals. Circulating glucose was substantially reduced from 160 to 77 mg/dl. Body weight was not affected by this short-term T3 treatment. Heart weights were increased, whereas adipose, muscle, and liver weights were not significantly altered . We also performed a dose-response curve in Ldlr/ mice using decreasing doses of T3. Even at 7.5 g/kg the mice had a marked reduction in cholesterol .

Better Markers Of Cardiovascular Risk

Wait, but I thought cholesterol tests were outarent lipoprotein particle numbers what we really care about?

Yep. Ive discussed in several articles and on my podcast why lipoprotein particle numbers are much better predictors of cardiovascular risk than cholesterol levels. However, there are few studies that have assessed the effects of thyroid hormones on lipoprotein particle number, compared to the number of studies that have assessed standard cholesterol measurements. Still, we see similar effects:

  • LDL particle number : Subclinical hypothyroidism has been associated with higher levels of ApoB-100, a surrogate marker for LDL particle number. T4 treatment significantly reduced ApoB-100 levels .
  • Oxidized LDL: Decreased thyroid function increases the number of LDL particles and promotes LDL oxidizability .

Resistance Of Ldl To Oxidation

The isolated LDL was incubated in Hams F-10 medium at 37 C in a humidified environment of 95% air and 5% CO2 in the presence of 2 mol/L Cu+2. Samples containing 50 g LDL protein were taken at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 24 h EDTA was added to a final concentration of 0.1 mmol/L, and the samples were stored at 80 C .

The lag phase was defined in this study as the period before an abrupt increase in the rate of oxidation of LDL, i.e. at least 3-fold increase in the amount of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances generated. TBARS represent the amount of lipid peroxides formed as a result of LDL oxidation. The longer the lag phase, the more resistant the LDL is to oxidation. In this study, the data for TBARS concentration were normalized , and the figures represent the x-fold increase in TBARS over time. This calculation was undertaken to allow comparison of data obtained at different times during the study.

Try this: Make a lassi, a traditional Indian beverage: purée yogurt, frozen mango chunks, and lime juice, then pour into glasses and garnish with slices of lime. Purée yogurt with blackberries, honey, and grated ginger stir in vanilla yogurt to make swirls and then spoon into Popsicle molds and freeze. Dump a container of yogurt into a cheesecloth-lined strainer and refrigerate overnight stir in your favorite herbs and seasonings, and use as a substitute for sour cream.

Why Would Tsh Be High

High TSH levels can mean your thyroid is not making enough thyroid hormones, a condition called hypothyroidism. Low TSH levels can mean your thyroid is making too much of the hormones, a condition called hyperthyroidism. Tests to diagnose Graves disease, an autoimmune disease that causes hyperthyroidism.

How can I control my thyroid at home? Add these to your diet: Foods that are rich in Vitamin A such as carrots and eggs. Seafood such as arame, dulce, kelp and nori that contain high levels of iodine. Foods that are rich in zinc such as beef, chicken, nuts and spinach. Increasing protein intake can help improve low thyroid function.

Liver Expression Of Lipoprotein Receptors And Other Metabolic Genes

At the conclusion of each study, liver was collected. Livers were homogenized in a RIPA buffer from Pierce Chemical Co. and protease inhibitors. Study Design And Participants

This study involves retrospective analyses of the population derived from the community-based REACTION study, which was a prospective observational cohort study in China investigating the epidemiology of metabolic diseases in residents aged 40 years or older . The study protocol was approved by the ethics committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and all participants provided written informed consent before data collection.

In this study, data were obtained from participants who enrolled in REACTION study in Ningyang County, Shandong Province between April 2011 and July 2017. We included 5,146 participants who had more than one visit during the study period and assessed for eligibility. As our primary focus was the relationship between statin use and the outcome of thyroid function, we excluded subjects using the following exclusion criteria: Missing vital data, such as age, sex, body mass index , or thyroid function self-report history of thyroid tumor, thyroidectomy, or radioactive iodine therapy intake of medications that influence thyroid function or serum lipids except statins within the past 3 months and complications or conditions that affect thyroid status or lipid metabolism, such as pregnancy, lactation, severe liver dysfunctions or aspartate aminotransferase higher than 100 U/L), renal dysfunction generated from simplified MDRD equation below 60 ml/min), or malignant tumor .
