What Can Raise My Cholesterol

How to Manage Low Thyroid and High Cholesterol

There is an array of different factors which can affect someones cholesterol levels. Some of these factors are known as modifiable risk factors and so they are lifestyle related, meaning we can change them to reduce our risk. However, there is also non-modifiable risk factors which are out of our control. Some research has shown that individuals with coeliac disease have elevated cholesterol levels on diagnosis 1.

The Takeaway: Following A Hypothyroidism Diet And Lifestyle

While certain dietary and lifestyle measures can help you lose extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight, there really is no such thing as a specific diet or best lifestyle for hypothyroidism.

Managing stress, exercising regularly, and keeping hypothyroidism-friendly foods in mind can help improve your health ultimately, following tried-and-true health advice and your medication schedule will all work in your favor.

The Connection Between High Cholesterol And Your Thyroid

Do you have high cholesterol?

Are you blaming your diet?

Not so fast…

Low thyroid is a COMMON cause of high cholesterol and it may explain your cholesterol issues.

Before you run and jump on a statin or another cholesterol medication make sure that you rule out your thyroid as the primary CAUSE of your high cholesterol.

This may not be obvious to you as a patient but it should be incredibly obvious to your doctor.

The connection between low thyroid and high cholesterol is so strong that high cholesterol should automatically cause your doctor to screen for low thyroid.

But I have one question for you:

Did your doctor actually do this? Or did they just assume your high cholesterol was “normal” and tried to put you on a prescription medication to treat it?

You’d be surprised at how many people have THIS experience instead of the screening for low thyroid as I described should happen above.

But this situation gets even more complicated:

High cholesterol is often an EARLY warning sign of low thyroid but your doctor may miss it if they are hyperfocused only on the TSH.

We will talk more about that below.

The Dangers Of Statins In People With Thyroid Dysfunction

If youve been following my work for a while, you probably know my opinion of statin drugs. Here are just a few of the articles Ive written on statins:

But it turns out that statin use is particularly concerning when the cause of high cholesterol is poor thyroid function. This is due to the effects of statins on creatine kinase levels.

Creatine kinase is an enzyme expressed in many different tissues throughout the body, though its probably most well-known for its action in muscle cells. CK is responsible for adding a phosphate to creatine to form phosphocreatine, which serves as an energy reservoir and allows for the quick release of energy in times of need.

Both statins and hypothyroidism result in CK release into the blood, and the cumulative effect is severe CK elevation . This can potentially amplify the adverse side effects of statins.

Yet, in reviewing the relevant medical records of 77 patients treated receiving statins in a hospital, a team of medical researchers discovered that only 23 percent of patients had received a thyroid panel before beginning statin treatment. Worse yet, 12 percent of patients with overt hypothyroidism received statins without receiving a thyroid panel or hypothyroid diagnosis .

The authors commented on their findings, emphasizing the need for routine thyroid screening in patients with lipid abnormalities:

How To Lower Cholesterol And Triglycerides

How to Lose Weight with an Underactive Thyroid

Triglycerides are a type of lipid, or fat, your body produces to store extra calories and provide energy. Cholesterol is another lipid that circulates in your blood. Your body uses cholesterol to build cells and produce hormones.

Both triglycerides and cholesterol are essential for your health but having levels that are too high puts your health at risk. Living a healthy lifestyle helps to keep your cholesterol and triglyceride levels within a normal range.

This article covers how triglycerides and cholesterol affect your health and how you can lower them naturally.

Plasma Cholesterol Reduction In Ldlr/ Mice Treated With T3 And T2

T3 and T2 treatments caused a marked reduction in total cholesterol . Feeding control mice with a WTD led to a marked increase in cholesterol from 160 to 1336 mg/dl. Treatment with T3 had a dramatic effect on circulating cholesterol, which was reduced approximately 70% to 406 mg/dl. Triglyceride levels, in contrast, were similar in control and T3-treated animals. Circulating glucose was substantially reduced from 160 to 77 mg/dl. Body weight was not affected by this short-term T3 treatment. Heart weights were increased, whereas adipose, muscle, and liver weights were not significantly altered . We also performed a dose-response curve in Ldlr/ mice using decreasing doses of T3. Even at 7.5 g/kg the mice had a marked reduction in cholesterol .

Better Markers Of Cardiovascular Risk

Wait, but I thought cholesterol tests were outarent lipoprotein particle numbers what we really care about?

Yep. Ive discussed in several articles and on my podcast why lipoprotein particle numbers are much better predictors of cardiovascular risk than cholesterol levels. However, there are few studies that have assessed the effects of thyroid hormones on lipoprotein particle number, compared to the number of studies that have assessed standard cholesterol measurements. Still, we see similar effects:

  • LDL particle number : Subclinical hypothyroidism has been associated with higher levels of ApoB-100, a surrogate marker for LDL particle number. T4 treatment significantly reduced ApoB-100 levels .
  • Oxidized LDL: Decreased thyroid function increases the number of LDL particles and promotes LDL oxidizability .

Thyroid health also impacts other cardiovascular risk factors:

Resistance Of Ldl To Oxidation

The isolated LDL was incubated in Hams F-10 medium at 37 C in a humidified environment of 95% air and 5% CO2 in the presence of 2 mol/L Cu+2. Samples containing 50 g LDL protein were taken at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 24 h EDTA was added to a final concentration of 0.1 mmol/L, and the samples were stored at 80 C .

The lag phase was defined in this study as the period before an abrupt increase in the rate of oxidation of LDL, i.e. at least 3-fold increase in the amount of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances generated. TBARS represent the amount of lipid peroxides formed as a result of LDL oxidation. The longer the lag phase, the more resistant the LDL is to oxidation. In this study, the data for TBARS concentration were normalized , and the figures represent the x-fold increase in TBARS over time. This calculation was undertaken to allow comparison of data obtained at different times during the study.

Foods Rich In Vitamin D: Yogurt Orange Juice Sardines Milks

The Low Thyroid High Cholesterol Connection

Is rich in vitamin D, a key hormone-like substance thats involved in immune system regulation. Vitamin D deficiencies are associated with increased risk of Hashimotos disease, an autoimmune condition thats the most common cause of hypothyroidism. Other good sources of D include fortified orange juice, dairy-free milks, sardines, and sunshine.

Try this: Make a lassi, a traditional Indian beverage: purée yogurt, frozen mango chunks, and lime juice, then pour into glasses and garnish with slices of lime. Purée yogurt with blackberries, honey, and grated ginger stir in vanilla yogurt to make swirls and then spoon into Popsicle molds and freeze. Dump a container of yogurt into a cheesecloth-lined strainer and refrigerate overnight stir in your favorite herbs and seasonings, and use as a substitute for sour cream.

Why Would Tsh Be High

High TSH levels can mean your thyroid is not making enough thyroid hormones, a condition called hypothyroidism. Low TSH levels can mean your thyroid is making too much of the hormones, a condition called hyperthyroidism. Tests to diagnose Graves disease, an autoimmune disease that causes hyperthyroidism.

How can I control my thyroid at home? Add these to your diet: Foods that are rich in Vitamin A such as carrots and eggs. Seafood such as arame, dulce, kelp and nori that contain high levels of iodine. Foods that are rich in zinc such as beef, chicken, nuts and spinach. Increasing protein intake can help improve low thyroid function.

Liver Expression Of Lipoprotein Receptors And Other Metabolic Genes

At the conclusion of each study, liver was collected. Livers were homogenized in a RIPA buffer from Pierce Chemical Co. and protease inhibitors. Homogenates were used for Western blot analysis using the following antibodies against mouse proteins: anti-LDLR and anti-LDLR-related protein 1 , anti-SR-BI , and anti-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase .

Hepatic mRNA levels were assessed by real time PCR. Primers for each gene are included in Supplemental Table 1 published on The Endocrine Society’s Journals Online web site at .

What Is The Connection Between Hypothyroidism And Cholesterol

If you have a thyroid disorder, and your thyroid gland is producing too many or too few thyroid hormones, this imbalance can lead to abnormal cholesterol levels in the blood.1

One of the essential roles of the thyroid gland is to produce hormones that support the liver process and remove excess bad cholesterol from the body.

If you have an underactive thyroid your thyroid isnt producing enough hormones, particularly the T3 hormone and increases the number of LDL receptors Receptors “a specialised cell or group of nerve endings that responds to things such as hormones” ) and so your body cant break down and remove LDL cholesterol properly. This can lead to a build-up of LDL in the circulatory system.3

Research tells us that 13% of nearly 9000 people tested with high cholesterol also had thyroid disorders.4

It is often the case that an overactive thyroid can result in lower cholesterol levels. This doesnt have associated health concerns and there isnt any specific medical evidence to support this as yet.1

The Link Between Thyroid Disease And Cholesterol

The Link Between Thyroid Disease and Cholesterol

Thyroid disease and cholesterol levels are closely related.

Interactions between these conditions include:

  • High cholesterol is linked to hypothyroidism .
  • A sudden drop in cholesterol can occur with hyperthyroidism .
  • Treating thyroid disease can correct cholesterol levels.
  • Cholesterol drugs can affect thyroid disease and its treatments.

This article explains why thyroid disease and high cholesterol are linked, the potential problems, and how to manage both conditions at once.

Study Design And Participants

This study involves retrospective analyses of the population derived from the community-based REACTION study, which was a prospective observational cohort study in China investigating the epidemiology of metabolic diseases in residents aged 40 years or older . The study protocol was approved by the ethics committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and all participants provided written informed consent before data collection.

In this study, data were obtained from participants who enrolled in REACTION study in Ningyang County, Shandong Province between April 2011 and July 2017. We included 5,146 participants who had more than one visit during the study period and assessed for eligibility. As our primary focus was the relationship between statin use and the outcome of thyroid function, we excluded subjects using the following exclusion criteria: Missing vital data, such as age, sex, body mass index , or thyroid function self-report history of thyroid tumor, thyroidectomy, or radioactive iodine therapy intake of medications that influence thyroid function or serum lipids except statins within the past 3 months and complications or conditions that affect thyroid status or lipid metabolism, such as pregnancy, lactation, severe liver dysfunctions or aspartate aminotransferase higher than 100 U/L), renal dysfunction generated from simplified MDRD equation below 60 ml/min), or malignant tumor .

Local And Seasonal Fruit Like Mango

Mango can help people dealing with a thyroid issue. Just ensure that you soak mango in water for at least half an hour. Doing so helps in getting rid of anti-nutrients in mangoes which can come in the way of calcium assimilation. Doing so can also be helpful for people who get a skin reaction after eating mangoes. âPeople with thyroid can benefit from eating mangos during lunch,â says Diwekar in the video. However, it is safe to eat mangoes during any time in the day.

Mangiferin is a bioactive ingredient in mangoes, which can help in lower blood sugar levels. When mangos are not in season anymore, you can have banana or any local fruit.

Measurement Of Thyroid Function Tests And Lipid Profile

Total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein , and triglyceride concentrations were measured at the clinical chemistry laboratory at the Ohio State Medical Center using Kodak Ektachem Clinical Chemistry slides on the Kodak Ektachem 700 , as described by the manufacturer. LDL cholesterol was calculated according to the Friedewald equation: LDL = total cholesterol HDL triglycerides/5 .

The TSH assay was a second generation assay with a sensitivity of 0.3 mU/L with an interassay coefficient of variation of 11.1% and an intraassay CV of 515% at the lower end of the assay TSH was measured using a Bayer Immuno-1 instrument . T4 was also measured using Bayer Immuno-1 instrument, with a sensitivity of 5.14 nmol/L , an interassay CV of 2.4%, and an intraassay CV of 6.2%.

Why Bad Cholesterol Is Essential To Your Thyroid

Youre innocent until proven guilty, right?

Or, are you guilty until proven innocent?

Imagine this

Youve been convicted of a murder you didnt commit.

You spend decades behind bars while your name is thrown through the mud and everyone around the world despises you.

Then youre proven innocent only to be convicted of the same crime yet again and thrown back in jail for decades more.

Now, imagine this happens to you four times in a row.

While this may seem like a made for TV crime series, its actually very real.

The innocent party here ischolesterol.

And its been proven innocent yet again .

This should be a day of celebration for you.

Because cholesterol is essential to your thyroid health.

And higher cholesterol might just help the millions of thyroid sufferers like you worldwide.

Ill explain what I mean in a minute.

First, its important to understand that cholesterol has never been the cause of heart disease.

Think about it

If every time you see an out of control fire you also see firemen, does that mean that firemen must be the cause of all those fires?

Of course not!

Well, then you shouldnt be so quick to blame cholesterol for heart disease either.

Its never been proven to cause heart attacks or heart disease.

In fact, much like the firemen are actually trying to help put those fires out

your cholesterol is actually trying to help protect you in much the same way.

What Causes Thyroid Disease

The two main types of thyroid disease are hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Both conditions can be caused by other diseases that impact the way the thyroid gland works.

Conditions that can cause hypothyroidism include:

  • Thyroiditis: This condition is an inflammation of the thyroid gland. Thyroiditis can lower the amount of hormones your thyroid produces.
  • Hashimotos thyroiditis: A painless disease, Hashimotos thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition where the bodys cells attack and damage the thyroid. This is an inherited condition.
  • Postpartum thyroiditis: This condition occurs in 5% to 9% of women after childbirth. Its usually a temporary condition.
  • Iodine deficiency: Iodine is used by the thyroid to produce hormones. An iodine deficiency is an issue that affects several million people around the world..
  • A non-functioning thyroid gland: Sometimes, the thyroid gland doesnt work correctly from birth. This affects about 1 in 4,000 newborns. If left untreated, the child could have both physical and mental issues in the future. All newborns are given a screening blood test in the hospital to check their thyroid function.

Conditions that can cause hyperthyroidism include:

Benefits Of Pro Omega

Essential Fatty Acids are nutritional cornerstones of human health. Two major families of fats are comprised under this designation, omegas 3 and 6. They are deemed essential because we need them for proper healthmuch like certain vitamins and mineralsbut cannot produce them on our own. We must therefore consume these fats through diet or supplementation.

Most people associate omega-3s with cardiovascular health, but their benefits go far beyond the heart. The two main omega-3seicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid promote a healthy immune response that is behind the relief of many chronic conditions but that is too often inhibited by poor nutrition. Extensive research has documented the health benefits of EPA and DHA, which include not only a healthy heart, but brain and cognitive function, joint mobility, eye health, pregnancy and lactation, healthy skin and hair, and a normally functioning immune response.

Which Superfood Is Best For Thyroid Health

How to Lose Weight with an Underactive Thyroid

There are a few superfoods well-known for their benefit to people with thyroid conditions and the good news is, some of them are pretty delicious.

Blueberries, pumpkins, and Brazil nuts support thyroid health because theyre full of antioxidants, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and selenium, Harris says. The best part? These sorts of foods make excellent, easy snacks. You can simply nosh on them by the handful every now and again to reap their many benefits.

BlueberriesBlueberries are widely touted as the worlds favorite superfood and thats because theyre delicious, easy to snack on, and packed full of antioxidants called polyphenols. For people trying to lose weight due to hypothyroidism, theyre also high in fiber and low on the glycemic index, meaning theyre lower in fructose. They can provide energy and a metabolic boost. Studies also show that people with thyroid conditions have higher levels of free radicals unstable atoms that wreak havoc on the body which the high amounts of antioxidants in blueberries may help reduce.

Brazil nutsBrazil nuts make the cut because they are super high in selenium. This is important because the thyroid gland has the highest amount of selenium of any organ in the body. Depending on the climate the Brazil nuts come from, they also pack high concentrations of zinc, copper, and magnesium. Aim for just a few per day.
