In general, 5-10 pounds of body weight may be attributable to the thyroid, depending on the severity of the hypothyroidism. Finally, if weight gain is the only symptom of hypothyroidism that is present, it is less likely that the weight gain is solely due to the thyroid.

There isnt a formal diet plan that outlines exactly what to eat, how much of it, and when. Rather, the anti-inflammatory diet is about filling your meals with foods that have been shown to fight inflammation and just as important cutting out foods that have been shown to contribute to it.

While treating hypothyroidism is likely not the only solution for helping you slim down to your ideal weight, it will help you get back on track. Skip the center aisles at the grocery store

Your doctor may recommend extra nutrients. Your body will struggle to absorb all the nutrients you intake when your hypothyroidism is an ongoing problem. This will mean you dont get all the calcium, iron, vitamins, and more that your body needs. You could eat plenty throughout the day from your diet, but your body isnt making use of them.

Its time to look at making sure you get the healthy intake by adding nutrients. Your doctor will be able to recommend the ones that work with your hypothyroidism medication.

If you dont want to take pharmaceutical nutrients, you can always get more through your foods. Look out for the lower calorie foods that include all the nutrients you need. Along with proper exercise, Dr. Apovian says protein is the other key to building muscle. Her suggestion is backed by the Center for Nutrition and Weight Management, which recommends a higher-protein diet of 1.2 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of ideal body weight for women with hypothyroidism. That means, if your ideal weight is 130 pounds , you should have 70 to 90 grams of protein daily.

A good rule is to build your meals around protein, but also include lots of veggies, healthy carbs like fresh fruit and whole grains, and healthy fats like avocados and olive oil.

Even with these guidelines, its worth working with an R.D. to come up with a personal diet plan for hypothyroidism, as certain foods or dietary restrictions can screw with your hormone levels even more.

  • A low-carbohydrate diet or very low-carbohydrate diet: Examples include the ketogenic diet and the Atkins diet.

Talk to your healthcare provider before starting any of these diets. Your own health may make some diets suitable, and others unhealthy for you. For example, a ketogenic diet could be dangerous for you if you have kidney disease, while a gluten-free diet would not be useful for you if you don’t have gluten sensitivity.
