5 Tips for Weight Loss after Thyroidectomy: What your Doctor is Missing

You’ll need to think about whether to have radioactive iodine versus other hyperthyroidism and Graves disease treatments. Weight gain after RAI is common. One study on patients who had a thyroidectomy found that those who did the surgery as their first line of treatment were less likely to become overweight or obese than those who had undergone RAI first. Talk to your doctor about your Graves/hyperthyroidism treatment options.

Keep in mind that most patients who have had surgical removal of the thyroid, called a thyroidectomy, or radioactive iodine treatment end up with hypothyroidism. There can be a delay between your treatment and the start of thyroid hormone replacement medication, leaving you hypothyroid for an extended period.

Have a plan in place with your physician for regular thyroid testing after surgery or RAI so that your treatment can start as soon as there is evidence that you are hypothyroid.

Will I Put On Weight With Thyroxine Medication After Thyroidectomy

The thyroid gland has only one function, which is to manufacture and secrete the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. These are the master hormones which control the bodys metabolic activity. The secretion of thyroid hormones is adjusted by another hormone secreted by the pituitary gland called Thyroid Stimulating Hormone via a negative feedback cycle. An explanation of the physiology of the thyroid can be found in a book chapter written by Professor Delbridge . Measurement of TSH levels in the blood is a very sensitive indicator of whether or not the body is receiving the correct amount of thyroxine.

Replacement therapy is normally provided in the form of a tablet of synthetic thyroxine taken once a day. This is identical to the T4 hormone naturally produced by the body and the two brands available in Australia are identical. The active form of thyroid hormone is T3, however that is produced by the body converting T4 to T3 at a cellular level. Some patients prefer a mix of T4 and T3 which can be dispensed by compounding pharmacists , as they say they feel better on combination therapy, however there is no scientific data supporting that view. The vast majority of patients feel perfectly well and normal on standard thyroxine replacement therapy.

Weight Gain After Thyroid Removal

Your thyroid glands main function is to produce the hormones that cause your body to burn calories. Surgical removal of the thyroid will cause major, lasting changes to your bodys metabolism.

Partial thyroidectomy is the treatment of choice for some hyperthyroid patients. Because a thyroid gland in overdrive typically causes weight loss, it makes sense that appropriate treatment will result in regaining some or all of the weight you lost while you were ill.

Thyroid Tumors

Your doctor may recommend a thyroidectomy if you have thyroid nodules that are suspicious for malignancy. If it turns out that you have thyroid cancer , your treatment will usually involve removal of the entire gland. If the tumor are benign, then you may have only a partial thyroidectomy.

Thyroid Hormone Replacement

If you have a partial thyroidectomy, your doctor may not prescribe any thyroid replacement medication afterward, as your remaining thyroid tissue is expected to continue producing adequate amounts of hormone. However, if you had your thyroid removed due to cancer, you will take a thyroid hormone pill dailynot only to replace what your body can no longer produce, but to deter the pituitary gland from making thryoid-stimulating hormone , which may encouarge tumor growth.

How Long Does Hoarseness Last After Thyroid Surgery

If you do have the hoarseness side effect after your thyroid surgery, it could last anywhere from two weeks after the surgery to three to six months after surgery. As time goes on and the nerves in your throat start to heal, the hoarseness will get better. You may wake up sounding normal but return to hoarseness by the end of the day. Hoarseness will come and go through the recovery process over the course of several weeks to months. This is about the nerves being weak and irritated. As the day goes on, your body continues the healing process some days may be more irritated than others. If hoarseness lasts more than 6 months, then your physician may make various recommendations to improve it.

Have Your Hormone Levels Tested

Research shows that hormone resistance problemsincluding leptin resistance and insulin resistancemay contribute to the difficulties many thyroid patients face in losing weight. And since both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism have been shown in multiple studies to create insulin resistance, this means you should consider having your fasting glucose and insulin levels tested, evaluated, and treated.

Fasting glucose levels above 100 may be a sign of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, which can make weight loss even more difficult.

For chronically high levels, your doctor may prescribe a type 2 diabetes drug like Glucophage . For borderline levels, reducing the sugar and carbohydrates in your diet and following a healthy carbohydrate-controlled diet can lower your blood sugar and help with weight loss.

4. Be Strict with your Diet but Don’t Restrict Calories

When I use the word diet I am referring to the food that you eat.

I’m not referring to DIETING or eating a calorie restricted diet.

In fact, eating a calorie restricted diet will actually make your thyroid function worse .

Since we’ve already discussed diet in this article I won’t go over it much more except some general guidelines:

  • Stick to Organic Food groups and Grass-Fed/organic Meats
  • Don’t be afraid of eating Healthy Fats
  • Eat lots of Vegetables
  • Don’t snack every 2-3 hours
  • Avoid Processed foods or anything that comes in a box or package
  • Avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners as much as possible

5. When your Energy Improves make Exercise Count

It may be difficult to think about exercising when you are suffering from fatigue after your thyroidectomy , but I can’t underscore how important exercise is for your health.

Exercise isn’t important because you are “burning calories”.

It’s important because it helps to balance hormones in your body , release endorphins and stimulate neurotransmitter release .

Even if your energy levels are low, I recommend that you start with low-intensity exercise on a daily basis:

Can Hypothyroidism Cause Erectile Dysfunction

In some cases, there can be a connection between untreated hypothyroidism and erectile dysfunction. When your hypothyroidism is caused by an issue with the pituitary gland, you can also have low testosterone levels. Treating hypothyroidism can often help with erectile dysfunction if it was directly caused by the hormone imbalance.

Exercise Almost Every Day

We recommend regular exercise for thyroid patients to lose weight. Exercise is a fantastic natural treatment for hypothyroidism, helping to:

  • Relieve depression
  • Lose unwanted weight
  • Maintain that healthy weight

Physical therapists and endocrinologists alike would probably suggest low-impact cardio exercise, especially to start out. Consult with a doctor before engaging in higher intensity strength training.

Aim to exercise for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

How much weight should you lose with hypothyroidism? Determine your healthy weight by starting with a normal BMI range for your height. Every person is different, so talk to your doctor about exactly how much weight you should try to lose.

Finding The Right Dose

Its important that you take the right amount of Synthroid or another thyroid hormone replacement drug. Some healthcare providers may prescribe only enough medication to get your thyroid-stimulating hormone level into the upper end of the reference range, close to the cutoff for hypothyroidism.

This may not be enough to resolve your symptoms or optimize your metabolism. Many thyroid patients and healthcare providers find that a TSH level below 2.0 is optimal for resolution of symptoms. This is also the optimal level for women of reproductive age. If your TSH is at the higher end of the reference range, talk to your healthcare provider about increasing your dosage of thyroid medication.

If youre hypothyroid and need to lose weight, talk to your healthcare provider to make sure youre on the right dose of the right drug and are taking it at the right time. With some fine-tuning of your treatment, your weight-loss efforts should begin to pay off.

Gain 20 Pounds After Thyroid Removal

I mean it, it’s a serious question.

Have you gained 20 pounds or more after your thyroid has been removed?

If so, you are not alone.

In fact, women, on average, gain around 20 pounds after they get their thyroid removed according to several studies which looked into the matter.

The question is…

Why does this happen and is there anything that you can do about it?

You already know that your endocrinologist or thyroid doctor is probably not even concerned about your weight gain.

They probably already attributed your weight gain to your age or some other issue even though the weight gain started RIGHT after your thyroid was removed.

And this is pretty standard, unfortunately.

The good news is that there is a REASON for this weight gain and that something CAN be done about it.

The bad news is that it’s often very difficult to lose weight once your thyroid has been removed and that’s exactly what we are going to discuss now.

Does Your Voice Change After Thyroid Surgery

One of the first side effects that almost all patients experience immediately after thyroid surgery is their voice changes because the nerves get swollen and irritated during the surgery. While they are healing, your voice could reflect a different sound until you recover. Your voice will sound hoarse in most cases, just like it does when the nerves are irritated with laryngitis.

The voice changing is almost always temporary, but it could last beyond the standard 6-8 weeks for recovery. You will find these nerves take a longer time to heal and can last up to three to six months before your original voice starts to resurface when you speak. Any long-term voice changes are rare in these surgeries and are not a large difference in the voice.

Many people worry about the question of how to lose weight when thyroid is not? Its hard to do, but still possible. People without thyroid for weight loss need to stick to a diet. Dietary requirements for people after the removal of the thyroid gland include such guidelines and rules:

  • The entire diet should be divided into small and frequent meals. Thus, the body is easier to digest food, and metabolic processes occur faster.
  • Exception of some products. These foods are those that for a long time to digest, exert load on the digestive tract and can lead to deposition of body fat. Its products, such as chocolate, sugar, confectionery, preservation, fatty, fried and capcana food. In order to quickly get rid of excess weight, you need to use only a light meal.
  • Limiting the amount of salt, as it contributes to the accumulation of fluid in the body and deposition of adipose tissue.
  • To cut the number of protein and fatty foods in the diet. We recommend that you use only lean meat, abandon fats of vegetable and animal origin, to reduce the amount of dairy products.

Daily diet of patients after removal of thyroid is based on the consumption of seafood, cereals, vegetables and fruits. Recommended is sea fish as it contains high amounts of iodine.

A Surprising Scary Diagnosis

After that day, things happened at warp speed. My seasonal allergy symptoms and raspy voice turned out to be subtle signs that a mass was pressing against my trachea. A soft tissue neck ultrasound and fine needle biopsy soon revealed that I had a four-centimeter tumor covering the entire right lobe of my thyroid gland. It turned out to be a type of thyroid cancer called follicular variant of papillary carcinoma.

I never gave much thought to my thyroid. But amid all the testing and my cancer diagnosis, I learned just how important it is. This butterfly-shaped gland produces thyroid hormone , which regulates just about every function in the body, such as metabolism, heartbeat, temperature, mood, and other important processes. It reaches out to nearly every cell in the body.

The most common type of thyroid cancer is papillary carcinoma, says thyroid cancer specialist Eric Whitman, MD, medical director of Atlantic Health Cancer Care in Morristown, New Jersey. Follicular variant is a subtype. Papillary and follicular thyroid cancers account for more than 90% of all thyroid cancers. They tend to grow very slowly. While follicular thyroid cancers usually do not spread to the lymph nodes, like many other cancers do, they can move into other body areas, such as the lungs or bones.

Why Is The Thyroid Important

Most people don’t realize that the thyroid is one of the most important parts in human body. I discovered this only after I no longer had one.

Your thyroid is a small gland located at the base of your neck, just below your Adam’s apple. Although small in size, it is one of the largest endocrine glands in your body. The thyroid gland consists of two small, cone-shaped lobes roughly the size of your thumb nails. It lies against the trachea and larynx. The thyroid is involved in the following tasks:

  • controlling how quickly the body uses energy
  • making proteins
  • controlling how sensitive the body should be to other hormones
  • regulating the metabolism rate in your body

In other words, the hormones produced by the thyroid are directly involved in supplying energy to every cell in the body. This is an over-simplification, but it’s how my doctor described it to me so that I could understand why it was so important for me to take my thyroid medication. Imagine if the cells in your heart and cells in your brain no longer received energy? What would happen to you then?

There are two main disorders of the thyroid that sound very similar but are quite different: hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.

As you can see, neither disorder is pleasant. In addition to these two disorders, one can develop nodules on the thyroid that are mostly benign, or thyroid cancer, which mostly affects women. You can also develop a goiter from an iodine deficiency or a bacterial or viral infection.
