Also known as the caveman diet, the theory behind going Paleo is rooted in basic hunter-gatherer principles of our ancestors. Grass-fed meat, fish, healthy fats, vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts are staples in the Paleo diet while grains, starches, and dairy are to be avoided.

    Limit Raw Cruciferous Veggies

    Although cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, cauliflower and are superfoods packed with important vitamins and minerals, eating them raw could be bad for your thyroid.     Should We Treat Subclinical Hypothyroidism

    Indications for treatment in subclinical hypothyroidism are not established, but general guidelines can be offered. Greater magnitude and duration of TSH elevation and higher titers of antithyroid antibodies increase the probability that the condition will progress to overt hypothyroidism and, therefore, increase the potential benefit of treatment with levothyroxine. The presence of symptoms that might be related to mild hypothyroidism also increases the potential benefit of treatment. Risk of harm to the patient, against which this potential benefit must be balanced, is quite small, since the use of the sensitive TSH assay provides assurance that we are not raising the blood thyroid hormone levels too much as long as TSH levels do not fall below the normal range. In patients with coronary artery disease and minimal elevations of TSH, however, it may be advisable to follow the TSH level rather than subject the patient to the small risk of levothyroxine therapy.

    In short, it seems reasonable to treat patients who have a TSH level that is consistently elevated above 10 U per mL , especially if titers of antithyroid antibodies are increased. Also, patients who complain of fatigue, dry skin, constipation, muscle cramps or other common symptoms of hypothyroidism may possibly benefit from treatment even if their TSH level is elevated only into the 5 to 10 U per mL range. An algorithm summarizing this approach is presented in Figure 1.

    If you are seriously thinking about getting off of your thyroid medication then there are a few things that you should know before you give it a try:

    #1. You Need Your Doctor on Board

    Before you do anything make sure that you discuss this with your doctor.

    The reason you want to get your doctor on board is just to make sure you don’t do anything that could accidentally cause harm.

    Getting off of thyroid medication isn’t a dangerous thing to do, as long as it is done correctly, but it may result in some changes in how you feel which should be evaluated by someone who knows what those changes mean.

    You will need assistance from your doctor both in monitoring your symptoms and in ordering thyroid lab tests to determine how you are responding.

    If you can’t get your doctor on board then you will want to seek out a second opinion using the resources found here.

    I can’t express how important it is to do this with physician support so please do not try this unless you are being monitored by a doctor.

    I’ve found that many doctors are pretty good about giving this sort of thing a try but your mileage may vary!

    When it comes to weight loss, most hypothyroid patients find success using medications which contain T3 .

    This has to do with the fact that your free T3 levels tend to correlate with weight loss .

    The higher your T3 levels the more weight you will lose.

    Standard thyroid medications like levothyroxine do not contain T3 thyroid hormone and so people on these medications may still experience low T3 even though they are taking it.

    Let’s imagine you are someone who is taking 100mcg of levothyroxine. In this case, you have been taking levothyroxine for 2-3 years and you are using it for hypothyroidism of unknown cause .

    Because you’ve only been taking thyroid medication for 2-3 years and because you are taking levothyroxine, you can try to get off of your thyroid medication using the standard approach.

    This is what it would look like for you:

    • Start by taking thyroid support supplements for 2-3 months before you attempt to reduce your dose
    • After 2-3 months of using your thyroid supplements, you would reduce your dose of levothyroxine down to 75mcg
    • After 2 weeks you would then decrease your dose down to 50mcg
    • After another 2 weeks you would reduce your dose down to 25mcg
    • After another 2 weeks you would then reduce your dose down to 0mcg
    • Allow your body 2-4 weeks to acclimate before rechecking your labs
    • *Note: you should recheck your labs at the 6 week mark or if you experience a sudden or abrupt worsening in your thyroid symptoms

    In this example, you would be able to completely come off of your thyroid medication in about a 6 week period.
