Iodine is needed to make the thyroid hormones, T3 and T4, which regulate your metabolism. If you dont have enough iodine in your diet, you wont be able to produce enough active thyroid hormone. Most people get sufficient amounts of iodine, but if youre vegan and dont eat dairy products and eggs, youre at higher risk for an iodine deficiency.

Are you using sea salt? Sea salt contains only trace amounts of iodine and the salt in processed food isnt usually iodized. Thats why its best to use iodized salt rather than sea salt if youre not eating meat and dairy products. Adequate iodine is especially important during pregnancy since even a mild deficiency can affect fetal growth and development. Other good sources of iodine are seafood and sea vegetables like kelp.

The thyroid is a mechanism to deliver iodine to the cells. Iodine is essential for mitochondrial function. The mitochondria;are the parts of the cell that are responsible for energy production. They take glucose and oxygen and they produce energy.

Small organisms is the ocean where they have lots of iodine around them, they dont need to have a thyroid. As we get into higher organisms where we have all these different cells, we needed to have a mechanism to deliver iodine to the cells. Iodine is an essential element for life.

We were introduced to Lisa through a mutual dietitian friend who raved about her work in the field of thyroid health. We often get emails from readers whove either recently been diagnosed with autoimmune thyroid issues or have long battled them without marked improvement in their health despite multiple interventions so we thought it was the perfect time to have Lisa stop by and share a little about what the thyroid gland is and how you can improve your thyroid health using wholesome, nourishing foods. We think youll agree that Lisas approach to thyroid health is one of abundance, not restriction, and something we should all be doing to support the little gland that does so much.

Thyroid 101

Depending on how much or how little thyroid hormone a persons thyroid makes, they may experience symptoms on opposite ends of the spectrum, such as restlessness vs. fatigue or weight gain vs. weight loss. Symptoms of an underactive or hypothyroid may include sluggishness, weight gain, depression, constipation, dry skin, and hair loss, among others. Symptoms of an overactive or hyperthyroid include anxiety, insomnia, unintentional weight loss, and heart palpitations, to name a few.

What causes thyroid function to become imbalanced?

Consider Supplements But Talk To Your Doctor First

You’ve probably heard that there’s a connection between thyroid health and iodine, which is essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. “Worldwide, iodine deficiency is one of the causes of;an enlarged thyroid gland;and hypothyroidism,” Dr. Gupta says. “However, iodine deficiency is rare in developed countries due to supplementation in table salt and certain foods such as dairy and bread.” In other words, you’re probably already getting enough iodine in your diet as is. In fact, too much iodine can trigger hyperthyroidism in susceptible individuals, so Dr. Gupta doesn’t recommend taking iodine pills without consulting your doctor.

On the other hand, if you suspect your thyroid may need a boost, speak to your doctor about;taking;selenium or vitamin D, both of which have been linked to improved thyroid health. “Clinical research shows that taking 200 mcg daily of the mineral selenium can reduce anti-thyroid antibodies,” says Dr. Gupta. “Alternatively, you can get the mineral by eating one to two;Brazil nuts each day.”

As for vitamin D, some research suggests it could be important in regulating the immune system: “Severe deficiency of vitamin D may be associated with autoimmune disease, so have your physician check your vitamin D levels and advise you about supplementation if the level is below normal,” she says.

Eliminate Heavily Processed Foods

Processed foods don’t have a direct impact on thyroid function, but when they’re heavily processed, as in the case of frozen pizza, microwave dinners, and donuts, they aren’t healthy for;anyone. Some heavily processed foods even contain certain ingredients that are considered carcinogenic .

In addition, foods that are heavily processed often have a lot of empty calories that don’t support your body at all. It’s best to choose fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods that have been minimally processed if you can. One way to start adopting a cleaner diet is to try shopping only the periphery of the grocery store.

Thyroid Conditions Can Be Lifelong But Very Manageable

While some thyroid conditions like postpartum thyroiditis are curable, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and other thyroid disorders are life-long conditions.;

If you suspect you have a thyroid condition or have been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, dont despair. While these are life-long conditions, they are very treatable.;

Medical professionals typically use blood tests to diagnose thyroid issues. Once you have a diagnosis, your medical professional can prescribe medications to regulate your thyroid function and hormone production so that you can feel better.;

Give Your Body A Nightly Food Break

Try to stop eating after 8 p.m. and give your body a 10- to 12-hour break overnight before you eat breakfast. When you sleep, your body starts producing thyroid, adrenal, and growth hormones. It draws the energy for this production from your stored fat, burning it as you sleep.

If you have too short a break between eating in the evening and again in the morning, your body never gets the message that it’s time to shift into fat-burning mode. Studies have suggested that by allowing a break of 10 to 12 hours, you encourage your body to get the message that more food is not coming every several hours, which may help shift you into fat-burning mode overnight.

Healthy Habits For Stress Management

Because chronic stress has been shown to disrupt thyroid health, I want to remind you all to find two of these stress-relieving techniques, and add them to your daily routine.;

  • Yoga
  • Bicycling for transportation
  • Walking outdoors

Whats The Difference Between An Underactive Thyroid And An Overactive Thyroid

When theres a serious thyroid problem, either the thyroid is underactive or its working overtime . When a person has hypothyroidism, the body doesnt make the amount of thyroid hormone its supposed to. Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, is characterized by too much thyroid hormone being produced within the body. Hyperthyroidism Impacts about 1% of the female population. Its not a common problem for men. Graves disease is the most common disease of hyperthyroidism.;

Characteristics of hyperthyroidism include: stress and anxiety, rapid heartbeat and heart palpitations, losing weight for no apparent reason, an intolerance to heat, sleep issues and insomnia, light periods, skipping periods altogether, the bulging eyes of Graves disease, shaking, thin skin, muscle weakness, irritability, and brittle nails and hair.;

Hypothyroidism is a bit more common than hyperthyroidism, affecting around 4 and a half percent of the population. Luckily, most people with hypothyroidism have mild symptoms. Hashimotos is the most common hypothyroid disease. Hypothyroidism is typically associated with symptoms like fatigue, a slow heart rate, loss of energy, hair loss, gaining weight without an apparent reason, hypersensitivity to cold temperatures, frequent constipation, dry skin, brittle hair, depression, forgetfulness, and irregular periods.;
