Iodine is the most important mineral for thyroid function. Without enough iodine the body cannot produce enough T3 a thyroid hormone. While its been said in mainstream medicine that iodine deficiency is usually not a problem, the work of researchers such as Dr. David Brownstein and Dr. Guy Abraham have shown that supplementing with higher doses of iodine is not only safe, but very effective in treating many thyroid conditions.

Cruciferous vegetables are part of a healthy and balanced diet, and I encourage patients with thyroid disorders to continue eating them in moderation, says Dr. Bakar. You would have to consume an excessive and unrealistic amount of these vegetables for them to interfere with iodine and thus hormone production in the thyroid.

Optimize Iron & Ferritin
Adequate iron levels are required for optimal thyroid function.
This means that if you have low iron then your thyroid function may be impaired and contributing to your current set of symptoms.
One easy way to assess for iron in your body is with the use of ferritin.
Ferritin can be easily ordered through routine lab work and can give you an idea of the status of iron in your body.
Low ferritin may indicate that you have low iron stores while high iron may indicate that you have high iron stores.
When it comes to iron you want to try and get just enough.
That’s why I refer to Iron as a “Goldilocks” kind of nutrient.
Too much may cause iron overload and lead to inflammation while too few may lead to impaired thyroid metabolism.
I’ve written about how important iron is to thyroid function here, but I will point out some of the most important parts in this article:
When you are evaluating your serum ferritin you’ll want to look for levels in the 40-60 ng/mL range.
You can treat low ferritin with the use of over the counter iron supplements such as liquid iron or iron tablets/capsules.
How Much Hormone Are You Making Right Now
As a general rule, every hundred pounds of body weight would require about 1 grain of natural desiccated thyroid , or about 100 micrograms of T4.
So, if you are a 150-pound, and you take a 150 microgram dose of T4, or 1.5 grain dose of NDT, and your scores say that youre perfect, you are probably not making much iodine on your own.
On the other hand, if you were a 200-pound person, and you were taking 100 micrograms of T4, and your levels were stable, you are making about half of that.
This is a general rule, but it should help give you an idea.
