Common Signs & Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism
I had thyroid problems long before I knew what was going on. Its easy to miss the common symptoms of hypothyroidism among other normal aspects of life. For me, I was having babies, not sleeping much because of that, and struggling to lose weight because I thought that was normal for being postpartum.
But in reality, my symptoms were way more extreme than they should have been. The thyroid can produce so many different symptoms when its not behaving right. Some people will have a lot of them, others may only have one or two noticeable signs. This is where proper testing makes all the difference in getting answers.
What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism to look out for?
What Are Some Natural Ways To Increase Thyroid Hormone Levels
If you are heading down the path to low thyroid levels and thyroid disease there are a few things you can do naturally to help support your thyroid gland. These are easy things you can do right in the comfort of your own home:
Iodized and Sea Salt with Minerals Make sure that you are using iodized salt in your home and for an extra punch, try sea salt with minerals. These help to nourish the thyroid gland and help it step up production of hormone. The best type of sea salt is Celtic sea salt and the greyer the color the better. This means there is an abundance of minerals present.
Figure 3: Celtic Sea Salt
Avoid Soy Soybeans mimic thyroid hormone and can make your body think there is enough there, when actually there is not enough. Soy in large amounts can be harmful to the thyroid gland.
Take Spirulina These little guys from the ocean are nutrient rich with iodine and other minerals that are good for your thyroid.
Get Enough Minerals Your thyroid needs zinc, magnesium, selenium and copper in order to convert T4 into the active form T3.
Avoid Broccoli and Cauliflower Any of the cruciferous vegetables can block the action of thyroid hormone in the body. Limit these vegetables to a few times a month if you have problems with thyroid hormone levels.
Licorice Root Can help to boost function of all the endocrine glands and increase energy. Use caution with licorice if you suffer from high blood pressure.
Consider Taking Specific Supplements
There are specific supplements that can better help you balance hormones & your thyroid. The best place to start is by choosing supplements in which the majority of the population is deficient. This includes supplements such as selenium, magnesium, omega-3, and vitamin D3 with vitamin K2.
For those who have hypothyroidism, there are a few additional supplements that can be highly beneficial. A sample of these includes Ashwagandha, iodine, methylated B vitamins, adaptogenic herbs, glutathione, and turmeric.

Even A Little Iodine Is A Lot
What we have found out is that the biggest driver for initiating thyroid disease is extra iodine, and that is perpetuated by even normal amounts of iodine in your system.
In fact, it really doesnt take a whopping amount of iodine every day. It takes a little more than you can tolerate at one point in time. Then, even normal amounts can be too much.
That said, this doesnt necessarily mean that the gland is damaged, its more that the situation has not been rectified. Less iodine can be the ideal place to start.

Sometimes we all need a little reset especially if we’re feeling a little sluggish and fuller than normal. Bloat is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints, says registered dietician Keri Glassman. A few of the causes can be gas, constipation, or high-fat meals. So what can you do if you’re feeling weighed down lately? Try a tea cleanse!
A tea-tox can help with your body’s gastrointestinal issues, Glassman says. That’s because hydration helps combat that uncomfortable bloat. So Glassman put together a three-day plan for you to help get rid of your bloat and get back to your best you. Follow the guide below for each meal of the three days.
Physical And Mental Factors
Controlling stress is important as high cortisol levels interfere with thyroid hormone functioning. The herb Withania, taken at night after dinner, may help reduce stress and anxiety, as well as reduce cortisol levels to help improve your quality of sleep.
An active lifestyle is another important factor in healthy thyroid function and overall good health. Exercise helps increase the thyroid hormones T4 and T3 and decreases TSH as shown in this study. But there are also some supplements and herbs you can take to help boost your energy levels, like vitamin B12, iron, Ashwagandha, and ginseng.

What I Tell My Patients Who Want To Support Their Thyroid
As many as one in eight women in the U.S. will develop some kind of thyroid disease in their lifetime.
Even more shocking, this stat doesn’t capture the millions of people who suffer from symptoms of low-grade and transient thyroid imbalances and never get diagnosed with disease.
This often happens because conventional doctors typically only test TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone, the hormone from the brain that is elevated when the thyroid is low. But for many people the active thyroid hormones, T4 and T3, can be low for reasons such as pituitary, or central, hypothyroidism, or because they are unable to convert T4 to T3.
In these cases, even though TSH might be within the normal range, a person may experience the symptoms of clinical hypothyroidism. These include:
- Weight gain
- Muscle pain or body aches
- Brain fog
If you think you might have a thyroid issue, your first step should be to work with a functional medicine doctor or doctor who will test you for blood markers for TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and antibodies to two proteins called thyroglobulin and TPO.
There are also some simple steps you can take right now, that may help improve thyroid function.
Dietary Changes To Make
Making dietary changes can be the first step in embracing natural thyroid treatment. Underactive thyroid treatment can begin with cutting out, and adding to, the diet in the following ways:
Add these to your diet:
- Foods that are rich in Vitamin A such as carrots and eggs.
- Seafood such as arame, dulce, kelp and nori that contain high levels of iodine.
- Foods that are rich in zinc such as beef, chicken, nuts and spinach.
- Increasing protein intake can help improve low thyroid function. Proteins include nuts and nut butters; quinoa; hormone- and antibiotic-free animal products ; and legumes.
- Insufficient intake of fat can exacerbate hormonal imbalance, which includes thyroid hormones. Natural, healthful fats include olive oil; ghee; avocados; flax seeds; fish; nuts and nut butters; hormone- and antibiotic-free full fat cheese, yogurt, and cottage cheese and coconut milk products.

Nutrition And Lifestyle Recommendations To Boost Thyroid Function And Restore Vitality
Approximately 10% of women suffer from an under active thyroid, and often they find themselves living in a zombie like state, experiencing debilitating symptoms that have a huge impact on their quality of life.
Once diagnosed there are so many nutrition and lifestyle changes that can be made to improve thyroid hormone levels.
Estrogen Dominance And Histamine Intolerance
Estrogen dominance and histamine intolerance share some common symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, and abnormal menstrual function. Estrogen and histamine also attach to the same receptors , which will result in the release of histamine from your mast cells present near your reproductive organs.;
The more estrogen your body has, the more histamine your mast cells will release. More histamine, however, will lead to more estrogen feeding a vicious cycle of estrogen dominance and histamine intolerance. If you are dealing with estrogen dominance, it is best to check for and address possible histamine intolerance as well. To learn more about the connection between estrogen dominance and histamine intolerance, I recommend reading this article.

Ensure Adequate Iodine Concentration & Saturation
Iodine is another important nutrient involved in the creation of thyroid hormone.;
Iodine deficiency may result in decreased substrate and may, therefore, lead to reduced thyroid hormone production.;
Iodine deficiency is more common than previously thought because the primary source of iodine in humans is from our diet.;
Soil depletion of nutrients, an avoidance of sea-vegetables, and a preference for using non-iodized salt have led to reduced ingestion of iodine.;
These factors may contribute to iodine deficiency and may potentially lead to reduced T3 levels.;
Despite this, iodine supplementation is not as straightforward as you might think.;
Some studies have shown that the consumption of iodine, without other nutrients such as Selenium, may lead to an increased risk of developing Hashimoto’s thyroiditis .;
With this in mind, and before you begin supplementing with iodine, consider these recommendations:;
- If you are going to trial iodine it’s best to start low and increase your dose slowly – Your body needs around 150-170mcg of iodine per day and you may not want to use doses higher than this initially.;
- If you have Hashimoto’s and you want to trial iodine make sure you take Selenium with it – Supplementation with iodine, in cases of concurrent selenium deficiency, may trigger inflammation and thyrocyte damage.
If you’ve tried other supplements and have symptoms of iodine deficiency then it may be a good idea to consider iodine supplementation.;
Problems With Hormonal Replacement
The answer from conventional medicine for hormonal concerns is prescription medications. The problem is that these hormonal replacement medications, hormonal contraceptives, and other hormone therapies can overwhelm your body with an unnatural amount of hormones. This can lead to a variety of health issues including :
Best Foods To Boost Your Thyroid
If you want your body to burn fat then the number one gland in your body you need to be working optimally is your thyroid gland.
Your thyroid makes and releases a hormone called Thyroid Hormone. And thyroid hormone is the accelerator pedal for your metabolism.
The more of it you have the faster your metabolic rate and the more fat you burn. The less you have of it the slower your metabolic rate and the harder it is to burn fat.
In mainstream medicine the way they alter thyroid hormone levels is with synthetic thyroid hormone drugs. However as a naturopath I take a different approach
Thyroid hormone is made from specific nutrients so by supplying your body with ample amounts of these nutrients you can boost your own production naturally.
So that means you can use food, not drugs, as your medicine!
Its an undeniable fact that your body can only run off the things you put in it. Its like your car. Your car can run on poor quality fuel but it runs much better and theres less wear and tear when you use premium fuel.

Reduce Stress And Improve Sleep
Stress and poor sleep are major contributing factors to hormonal imbalance. I recommend practicing journaling, breathwork, meditation, yoga, time in nature, and positive affirmations for stress and anxiety reduction. Taking an Epsom salt bath is another great way to relax your muscles, calm your mind, and detoxify your body. Make sure to sleep at least 7 to 9 hours a night.

Find Out Which Foods You Are Sensitive To
Because food sensitivities can cause chronic inflammation, they could be affecting your thyroid. Doing an elimination diet to pinpoint which food might be to blame, with guidance from a health coach or doctor, can be better than any blood test available. Make sure to cut out frequent culprits like gluten, dairy, and soy.
Invest In A Water Filter
Tap water can contain levels of chlorine or fluoride , which can disrupt how much iodine your thyroid ends up getting. Since iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, this could end up interfering with your thyroid function. Opt for a carbon-block filter, which will reduce levels of chlorine and fluoride.

The thyroid stimulating hormone is released by the anterior pituitary gland. This hormone stimulates the thyroid gland. Its release ensures normal levels of thyroid hormones. If you are worried about how to raise TSH levels naturally, it is safe to assume that you are having lower than normal TSH levels. In addition to the prescribed medications, there are certain ways in which you can raise your TSH levels naturally, lets take a closer look into it.
Testing Your Estrogen Levels
I recommend testing your estrogen subtypes to help you discover your Estrogen Quotient and uncover potential health issues and health risks. The higher your E3 is compared to your E1 and E2 levels, the lower your cancer risks may be.;
The formula is simple: Total E3 / = Your EQ. You want this number to be over 1.0. If your EQ is under 1.0, your risks of breast cancer are higher than those with a result under 1.0. A low EQ may also mean an increased risk of hormonal issues and autoimmune problems. The optimal EQ is over 1.5.;
To test your estrogen levels, I recommend a DUTCH Complete Hormone Panel. This comprehensive test not only allows us to look at your estrogen subtype levels, but to check your progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, DHEA, and melatonin levels, look at your complete adrenal profile, and understand your hormonal health better.;

Risk Factors And Causes
Hormonal imbalances are multi-factorial disorders, meaning they are caused by a combination of factors such as your diet, medical history, genetics, stress levels and exposure to toxins from your environment.
Some of the major contributors to hormonal imbalances include:
- Food allergies and gut issues: An expanding field of new research shows that your gut health plays a significant role in hormone regulation. If you have leaky gut syndrome or a lack of beneficial;probiotic;bacteria lining your intestinal wall, youre more susceptible to hormonal problems, including diabetes and obesity. Thats because inflammation usually stems from your gut and then impacts nearly every aspect of your health.
- Being overweight or obese
- High amounts of stress, and a lack of enough sleep and rest
Adrenal dysfunction is the largest cause of the hormonal imbalance with the sex hormones especially because of something called the cortisol steal.
This occurs when cholesterol, which usually helps to make the sex hormones, combines with too much stress and the enzyme 17/20 lyase blocks the conversion; the production of cortisol ensues. Cortisol then causes the imbalance of progesterone, estrogen and testosterone, which then decreases the sex drive.

The Problem With Xenoestrogens
Xenoestrogens are artificial compounds that have estrogenic effects but are different from naturally occurring estrogen. They are hormone-mimicking compounds that mimic the effects of estrogen and contribute to estrogen excess or prevent the beneficial effects of natural estrogen in your body. Xenoestrogens may be hiding in your tap water, pesticides, herbicidal, conventional cleaning, cosmetics, nail polish, hair dye, personal body care products, canned food, dental sealants, food dyes, birth control pills, medical devices, building materials, home furnishing, laundry products, and air fresheners. They are endocrine disruptors that enter your fat cells, are difficult to break down, but may increase your risk of hormonal and other health issues .
