What Is The Best Way To Take Thyroid Hormone

How Long Does it Take Thyroid Medication to Work?

The maintenance of steady and predictable thyroid hormone levels in the blood is essential to health .; Patients with hypothyroidism need to take thyroid hormone by mouth as a medication each day.; Dietary habits can influence how the body absorbs thyroid hormone.

Thyroid medication should be taken on an empty stomach, around the same time each day. Afterwards, we recommend avoiding eating or drinking for 30-60 minutes. Most of our patients take thyroid hormone in the morning upon waking. Breakfast, including any coffee or milk, can be eaten 30-60 minutes later.; The second most popular method is to take thyroid hormone in the evening, at least 3-4 hours after any food intake.;You should try to establish a routine that allows you to be consistent each day.;

Certain medications and supplements decrease absorption of thyroid hormone and should be taken;3-4 hours;after taking thyroid hormone. These include fiber supplements, calcium and iron supplements, proton pump inhibitors , soy products, and multivitamins with minerals.

What Are The Different Kinds Of Thyroid Medication

To combat hypothyroidism, you must take a daily thyroid hormone replacement medication. Thyroid medication typically works by increasing circulating thyroxine levels. T4 is responsible for regulating your weight, heart rate, temperature, muscle strength, and overall energy and mood. Levothyroxine provides synthetic T4 to replenish low thyroid hormone levels.

There are also thyroid medications that increase triiodothyronine , the other primary hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Examples of T3 drugs include Cytomel and Triostat.

There are also combination T4/T3 formulations that come in a single pill. In the United States, these come as natural desiccated thyroid . While every person is unique in what will work best for them, synthetic T4 is usually the standard treatment method for hypothyroidism.

What Is The Relationship Between Thyroid And Weight

There is a complex relationship between the thyroid and body weight-metabolism. Over a specific amount of time, the metabolism rate is determined by measuring the amount of oxygen used by the body. This measurement test is known as the Basal Metabolic Rate and this test is the one which used to check the thyroid status at the initial state.

  • The thyroid glands are associated with BMR itself. The patients whose thyroid glands are not working found to have low BMRs.
  • As this test consists of various complexities so this is the reason that doctors avoid this test as BMR is subject to many other influences other than the state of the thyroid.

What If I Forget To Take It

Thyroid Medications That Still Work

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In which case just skip the forgotten dose. Do not take 2 doses together to make up for a missed dose.

If you forget often doses, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could also ask your pharmacist for advice on other ways to help you remember to take your medicine.

How Much Weight Can I Expect To Lose Once The Thyroid Is Treated

Once the thyroid is treated one can experience some sort of weight loss. The treatment of the thyroid abnormal state with thyroid hormone should result in a return of body weight. To what it was before the hypothyroidism developed.

  • The thyroid usually develops over a long period of time and its treatment also takes time to cure the symptoms. This is the reason that the weight loss process also takes much time after the treatment of thyroid.
  • Once the thyroid symptoms get cured, the weight loss process begins slightly slow and that also depends on person to person. The ability to gain or lose weight is the same.
  • As in individuals who do not have thyroid problems once hypothyroidism has been treated and thyroid hormone levels have returned to the normal range of thyroid hormone.

When To Take Thyroid Medications To Get Accurate Lab Results

  • TSH– This is a pituitary hormone that responds to low/high amounts of circulating thyroid hormone. In advanced cases of Hashimoto’s and primary hypothyroidism, this lab test will be elevated. In the case of Graves’ disease the TSH will be low. People with Hashimoto’s and central hypothyroidism may have a normal reading on this test.;
  • Free T3 & Free T4-These tests measure the levels of active thyroid hormone circulating in the body. When these levels are low, but your TSH tests in the normal range, this may lead your physician to suspect a rare type of hypothyroidism, known as central hypothyroidism. ;

Common Side Effects And Self

The common side effects of levothyroxine usually happen because the dose you’re taking is more than you need. These side effects usually go away after you go on to a lower dose of levothyroxine or stop treatment.

Common side effects are the same as the symptoms of an overactive thyroid. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if these side effects bother you or do not go away.

  • orlistat, a medicine used for weight loss
  • sucralfate, a medicine used to treat stomach ulcers
  • some cholesterol-lowering medicines such as colestyramine, colestipol or colesevelem

Read the information leaflet supplied with these medicines or speak to your pharmacist for advice on how much time to leave between taking these medicines and taking levothyroxine.

Why Is This Medication Prescribed

Levothyroxine is used to treat hypothyroidism . It is also used with surgery and radioactive iodine therapy to treat thyroid cancer. Levothyroxine is in a class of medications called hormones. It works by replacing thyroid hormone that is normally produced by the body.

Without thyroid hormone, your body cannot function properly, which may result in poor growth, slow speech, lack of energy, excessive tiredness, constipation, weight gain, hair loss, dry, thick skin, increased sensitivity to cold, joint and muscle pain, heavy or irregular menstrual periods, and depression. When taken correctly, levothyroxine reverses these symptoms.

Not All Thyroid Medications Probably Work If Taken Sublingually

And, unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of scientific studies to help guide us here.;

It would be nice if someone studied each and every thyroid medication available and then determined which formulated CAN be absorbed sublingually but we just don’t have that.;

Instead, we have a small number of medical studies and a large number of patient stories and experiences.;

Let’s work with what we have:

We know for sure that LIQUID formulations of thyroid medications can absolutely be safely absorbed if taken sublingually.;

These liquid formulations include medications like Tirosint-Sol and possibly even Tirosint if the gel capsules are broken.;

There are some studies that show that placing liquid thyroid medication in your mouth and letting it sit there WILL result in absorption of that medication into your body.;

But what about other thyroid medications such as NDT or natural desiccated thyroid?;

This is where we get into some grey area.;

There are plenty of patient reports who have had success taking NDT via the sublingual route.;

Unfortunately, NDT is quite hard to break down, even for your stomach, so you have to assist the process if you want it to occur under your tongue.;

This usually means doing things like:

  • Chewing up or smashing your NDT and letting it sit in your mouth
  • Warming your mouth up with warm water BEFORE you put your thyroid medication in your mouth
  • Taking your thyroid medication with sugar under the tongue
  • Taking your NDT with B12 lozenges

Signs That Mean You Need To Change Your Thyroid Medicine

  • Still feeling fatigued or tired most of the time;
  • Not able to lose weight or continue to gain weight;
  • Having brain fog and feel that your mental capacity is not the same as before;
  • Mood changes.;Especially feeling depressed or anxious most of the time.;
  • Hair loss and hair thinning is continuing or not improving;
  • Constipation or Bloating in your gut;
  • Feeling cold all the time;
  • Your blood work shows the thyroid levels i.e TSH, T3 levels, T4 levels are not in the normal range;
  • Body pain or joint pain is not improving;;
  • Feeling weak;
  • Also, it depends on when you start the thyroid medicine.

    So another important question here is how long does it take to feel better on thyroid medication.;So the real answer is that your body starts adjusting to thyroid medications in 2-3 weeks.

    And if after taking the thyroid medications for 2-3 weeks and you are still feeling miserable then its time for you to change the thyroid medicine.;

    Is It Possible To Take Your Thyroid Medication Sublingually

    How to Take Your Thyroid Medication Properly

    First off, we need to have a small discussion on whether or not it’s actually possible to take your thyroid medication via the sublingual route.;

    If you are in the medical field then you probably already know that all medications are not necessarily absorbed if they are taken in this way.;

    It would be nice if they were, but only a select few ingredients and hormones can be taken effectively via this route.;

    Not all medications work this way because some are too big to be absorbed under your tongue, others take too long to dissolve so they end up getting swallowed anyway, and others actually need to be activated in your gut to be effective.;

    But what about thyroid hormones?

    It turns out that thyroid hormones CAN be absorbed under your tongue , but it’s not quite that simple.;

    Just because they CAN make it through the membrane under your tongue doesn’t guarantee that they WILL get absorbed.;

    Unfortunately, many thyroid medications come bound tightly to inactive ingredients found inside of your thyroid capsules which makes the dissolving of your thyroid medication quite difficult.;

    So, even though it is theoretically possible to absorb your thyroid medication under your tongue, it’s quite possible that if you put your thyroid medication under your tongue that only a fraction is absorbed there while the rest ends up getting swallowed as a dissolved solution.;

    This leads us to a big problem:

    Which thyroid medications work if taken under the tongue?

    Why Is Thyroid Medication Is Necessary For Hypothyroidism

    Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones naturally to help regulate essential body functions. For this reason, people with overt hypothyroidism require lifelong thyroid hormone replacement medication. When thyroid hormones are low, you can experience several unpleasant symptoms that impact your overall health and life quality.

    Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

    • Heavier than normal or irregular menstrual periods
    • Thinning hair

    The Best Time To Take Synthroid:

    Q. Ive been told to take my Synthroid first thing in the morning, but Ive read that coffee interferes with its absorption. I hate waiting an hour after I get up before I have my coffee or breakfast. Is this really necessary?

    A. Levothyroxine is better absorbed when you have not eaten . That is probably the basis for the usual admonition to take this pill first thing in the morning. But that is not always the best time to take Synthroid. Food, dietary supplements and coffee can interfere with its absorption . As a result, the most conscientious patients may;end up like you, rising an hour before breakfast time and stumbling through that hour before enjoying the first sip of steaming coffee.

    Should You Switch To The Sublingual Route

    I think there is definitely a time and place to try the sublingual route if you are a thyroid patient but I wouldn’t make any broad recommendations like “all thyroid patients should do this”.;

    But which types of thyroid patients WOULD benefit from using this approach?

    Here is a list of people that I think should consider it:

    • YOU, if you’ve tried taking many different types of thyroid medications without any success
    • YOU, if you have known gut problems or malabsorption issues from chronic gut issues
    • YOU, if you’ve had surgery or changes to the anatomy of your gut
    • YOU, if you are sensitive to the inactive fillers and binders found in many thyroid medications
    • YOU, if you have a physician who can help monitor you while you make the change

    This is just a list that I’ve created based on my own experience.;

    You are welcome to give the sublingual route a shot if you feel that it will help you but I do strongly suggest that you do not make any changes to your thyroid medication without letting your doctor know.;

    Hopefully, your doctor is willing to work with you because he/she should be very familiar with drugs being taken this route.;

    Watching For Interactions With Levothyroxine

    Thyroid Medication Tips

    Other drugs and some dietary supplements can interact with levothyroxine. As noted above, iron and calcium supplements can;interfere;with the absorption of levothyroxine. The iron or calcium can bind with the synthetic hormone, preventing your body from using it. “You’re basically snatching away some of the levothyroxine that otherwise wouldve been absorbed into the body,” Dr. Pizzi says.

    The hormone estrogen also can interfere with the body’s ability to use levothyroxine. That means women taking birth control pills may need an increased dose of thyroid medication, Pizzi says. Hormonal changes caused by menopause can also affect how the body uses levothyroxine.

    According to Dr. Lee, other medication and physical conditions that can change the daily requirement of levothyroxine include:

    • Being elderly

    How Long After Starting Thyroid Medication Will I Lose Weight

    How long after starting thyroid medication will I lose weight Thyroid or hypothyroidism is commonly associated with weight gain but an effective treatment with levothyroxine can help to reduce the weight by restoring the normal thyroid hormone levels. Although if we discuss how long after starting thyroid medication will I lose weight. Then it takes time to reduce the weight after thyroid medications. In this aspect, let us scroll below to know more about how to lose weight with thyroid medications.

    After you start taking the treatment for thyroid the medicines take along to act in the beginning. It may take a few weeks to experience the improvement. As levothyroxine takes time to cure the symptoms and maintains the weight. But symptoms should start disappearing within a month. Weight control becomes one of the biggest frustration for thyroid patients and its treatment while curing the thyroid controls the weight as well.

    Dairy Reduces Levothyroxine Concentration

    The study examined 10 healthy subjects with normal thyroid function to assess whether consuming cows milk has a direct effect on levothyroxine absorption.2

    Following an overnight fast, serum total thyroxine concentrations were measured at baseline and at 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours after the participants took 1000 g of oral levothyroxine alone or when coadministered with 12 ounces of 2% milk.

    Results showed that the TT4 concentrations were significantly lower when levothyroxine was taken at the same time as the milk as compared to levothyroxine alone.2 Also, peak serum TT4 concentrations dropped significantly when cows milk was coadministered with levothyroxine than with the levothyroxine alone.

    The researchers believe that both the calcium content of the milk and the presence of protein might directly interfere with the proper and full absorption of levothyroxine, complicating the management of hypothyroid.2

    Our results show that calcium-rich foods should be consumed apart from thyroid hormone medication, as much as possible, Dr. Leung tells EndocrineWeb. This will help ensure that thyroid blood tests remain constant, thus decreasing the need for potentially unnecessary changes in the dose of thyroid replacement needed to manage your hypothyroidism.

    Calcium-rich foods including cows milk, yogurt, cheeses and ice cream and frozen yogurt. Also, non-dairy milk like those made from almond, soy, and rice, which; are fortified with calcium.4

    So How Long Will It Take You To Feel Well Again

    Its going to depend on how many aspects you need to fix or address, how well you take control of your health and advocate for yourself and how your individual body reacts and adjusts.

    For some it takes longer and for some it is quicker. Do also bear in mind that, often, the longer youve been unwell without diagnosis and medication, the more likely youll have more issues to address, as untreated hypothyroidism and Hashimotos can send other things out of whack over time.

    Its also important to remember that whilst many people do eventually return to a good quality of life and good health, expecting to return to exactly how you were pre-hypothyroidism/Hashimotos isnt totally realistic either.

    Your body is still going to handle and react to things differently now that you live with a lifelong, chronic health condition, so be kind to yourself and learn how to manage it effectively.

    Keep in mind that you need to create a healthy work-life balance, stress response and regimen to promote good health. Much of this can include reducing work hours, scheduling in rest days to allow your body to recharge, taking supplements that support you, eating and drinking well and getting good quality sleep.
