How Can You Treat Thyroid Problems Naturally

Keep Potassium Iodide On Hand

Can You Cure a Thyroid Problem Naturally?

You may want to buy some potassium iodide to keep in your family emergency kit. KI is an over-the-counter supplement that, when taken within the first few hours after a nuclear accident or an attack on nuclear facilities, can help protect your thyroid from the risk of thyroid cancer.

The reason for this is that your thyroid needs iodine to function, which it normally gets from your bloodstream. However, it can’t tell the difference between regular iodine and radioactive iodine, the type that’s released from nuclear plants or from radioactive material during nuclear explosions.

According to research, radioactive iodine can increase your chance of developing thyroid cancer, and it’s especially risky for unborn babies, infants, and young children. By taking KI, you’re saturating your thyroid with iodine so it won’t take in radioactive iodine.

In a radiation emergency, the risk of developing thyroid cancer is thought to justify the risk of taking KI. But if you’re not directly in the path of a radioactive plume, KI won’t protect you from anything. It can trigger or worsen hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, exacerbate existing thyroid conditions, and lead to conditions such as the Jod-Basedow phenomena and the Wolff-Chaikoff effect. It can also cause sialadenitis , gastrointestinal disturbances, allergic reactions, and rashes.

Our Approach To Natural Thyroid Treatment

Many doctors begin hypothyroidism treatment with a check for low thyroid stimulating hormone levels. However, during our work with patients, weve found that doesnt give us a full picture of your thyroid.

When a patient comes to us with symptoms of hypothyroidism, the first thing we look for is Hashimotos disease. Hashimotos disease is an autoimmune condition that accounts for 90% of hypothyroidism cases.

Causes of Hashimotos are varied, but we administer blood tests, urine tests, and/or elimination diets to understand your unique diagnosis. Our experience has taught us that treating the root causes of Hashimotos is how to cure hypothyroidism permanently it also means each patient gets a tailored treatment plan, and all treatments dont work for all people.

When identifying the cause of Hashimotos disease, we look at the following six risk factors:

  • Hormone imbalance If your hormone levels are imbalanced , this can trigger an underactive thyroid.
  • Food sensitivity Food allergens can cause a hormone imbalance or even hypothyroidism. Celiac disease has been linked with increased risk of autoimmune disease, such as Hashimotos. Other food sensitivities may be less obvious but may be just as significant.
  • Infections Tick-borne infections and viral infections may lead to an underactive thyroid.
  • Other causes include thyroid cancer, hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills, and overtreatment of hyperthyroidism .

    Women And Thyroid Connection

National Center for Biotechnology Information data says that around 42 million people in India suffer from thyroid-related disorders notably, 60 per cent of which are women. The women who are diagnosed with thyroid tend to have irregular menstrual periods, fertility issues, complications during pregnancy. Most of the thyroid disorders are auto-immune in nature and women are more prone to auto-immune diseases can get affected very easily.

Hyperthyroidism in pregnant women can lead to premature birth, miscarriage, preeclampsia, and congestive heart failure.

    Ways To Shrink Benign Nodules

    Wake Up Your Thyroid

That is why I believe that a number of dietary and lifestyle changes can help improve symptoms of Hashimotos and reduce the size of thyroid nodules.

As mentioned above, many root causes of Hashimotos are associated with the development of thyroid nodules, so addressing them may reverse their growth and shrink them! Here are some tips that may help to reduce the size of your thyroid nodules:

    • Address nutrient deficiencies in iodine, selenium, and vitamin D While iodine deficiency is rare in those with Hashimotos, those that are indeed low in iodine may benefit from taking a multivitamin with iodine, like Nutrient 950 from Pure Encapsulations. A dose of up to 250 mcg of iodine per day has been found to be helpful and beneficial in people with Hashimotos however, doses above 300 mcg can be potentially inflammatory. Vitamin D and selenium supplementation may also help. You can read more about addressing vitamin D and selenium deficiencies in my articles.
    • Clear out toxins Supporting your livers detoxification pathways as well as opting for non-toxic, natural personal products can greatly reduce your bodys toxic burden and result in optimal thyroid health. Check out my article on liver support for more information.
    • Consider smart supplementation Some of my readers have reported an elimination of nodules utilizing the systemic enzyme Wobenzym, and others with turmeric.

    Natural Treatment For Hyperthyroidism

Were going to discuss several natural therapies for the treatment of hyperthyroidism and to help manage the symptoms. However, I want to be clear that you shouldnt try to treat hyperthyroidism alone and need to find a clinician to support you.

As a naturopathic physician I am licensed to treat hyperthyroidism and prescribe the medications above, but I still recommend patients also have an experienced endocrinologist as part of their health care team.

Consider Supplements But Talk To Your Doctor First

You’ve probably heard that there’s a connection between thyroid health and iodine, which is essential for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. “Worldwide, iodine deficiency is one of the causes of an enlarged thyroid gland and hypothyroidism,” Dr. Gupta says. “However, iodine deficiency is rare in developed countries due to supplementation in table salt and certain foods such as dairy and bread.” In other words, you’re probably already getting enough iodine in your diet as is. In fact, too much iodine can trigger hyperthyroidism in susceptible individuals, so Dr. Gupta doesn’t recommend taking iodine pills without consulting your doctor.

On the other hand, if you suspect your thyroid may need a boost, speak to your doctor about taking selenium or vitamin D, both of which have been linked to improved thyroid health. “Clinical research shows that taking 200 mcg daily of the mineral selenium can reduce anti-thyroid antibodies,” says Dr. Gupta. “Alternatively, you can get the mineral by eating one to two Brazil nuts each day.”

As for vitamin D, some research suggests it could be important in regulating the immune system: “Severe deficiency of vitamin D may be associated with autoimmune disease, so have your physician check your vitamin D levels and advise you about supplementation if the level is below normal,” she says.

    Can Hyperthyroidism Be Cured

Traditional treatment for hyperthyroidism can include medication and surgery.

If the thyroid is completely removed, technically hyperthyroidism is reversed, however, now the patient has hypothyroidism and has to be on levothyroxine for life. This option is only considered in very extreme circumstances.

While you can not cure an autoimmune condition, you can put it into remission and eliminate symptoms with surgical, pharmaceutical, and natural therapies.

    Are Natural Treatments Effective

Natural remedies can be effective for improving overall health and for treating subclinical thyroid problems. For people with mild thyroid conditions, going natural may have an advantage over prescription medication in that natural treatments typically have fewer side effects. For people taking thyroid medication, herbal treatments and dietary changes should be approved by a doctor because combining different forms of treatments can create unwanted side effects.

Generally, a healthier diet can lead to better health and make treatment with Tapazole , desiccated thyroid, or Synthroid more effective. If you are interested in using natural treatments for your thyroid problem, talk to your doctor for ways of incorporating natural remedies into your treatment plan.

    Hyperthyroidism And Kidney Disease

It is important to note that hyperthyroidism will cover up kidney disease. This occurs because the overactive thyroid hormone increases blood flow to the kidneys. When hyperthyroidism is treated, and blood flow returns to normal, the true kidney function is uncovered. Kidney disease is very common in older cats, and therefore most hyperthyroid cats have some degree of kidney disease as well.

Once treatment begins, expect that your kittys kidney values will rise. It is important to understand that the kidney disease was not caused by the treatment but, instead was present all along.

What Foods Are Bad For Thyroid Function

Now that weâve highlighted foods to boost thyroid function, letâs focus on foods to avoid if you have a thyroid condition.

      If you have hypothyroidism

In general, stay away from foods that are high in soy protein, since they may interfere with your bodyâs ability to absorb replacement thyroid hormones.

You may have also heard that you should avoid cruciferous vegetables such as spinach, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, turnips, and Brussels sprouts.

Itâs important to know that these foods, by themselves, probably wonât harm your thyroid function. However, they are considered goitrogenic foods because they affect your thyroidâs ability to absorb iodine, which can lower thyroid hormone production and increase your risk for goiters.

What does that mean for you? If youâre not getting enough iodine in your diet, or if you know you have low iodine levels, you may want to talk to your healthcare provider about avoiding these vegetables.

But if you have hypothyroidism, or are at increased risk for goiters due to family history, you donât have to avoid these vegetables entirely. Instead, try to mix up the vegetable servings you eat each day, so you arenât getting a whopping intake of goitrogens in any one meal. Also note that if you juice these vegetables, youâll vastly increase their concentration of thiocyanates, which is the chemical in goitrogenic vegetables that interferes with your thyroid gland function.

      If you have hyperthyroidism

      What Foods Help With Hyperthyroidism

No specific diet will directly improve your symptoms of hyperthyroidism. If, however, Gravesâ disease is behind your hyperthyroidism , then choosing certain foods can help support your immune system health and thus overall thyroid function. These foods include:

      • Dairy products, orange juice, eggs, salmon, or other items fortified with calcium and/or vitamin D, since Graveâs disease can lead to bone loss and osteoporosis, and these foods can help prevent these issues.
      • Protein-rich foods like chicken, turkey, beans, and nuts, since weight loss is a common symptom of hyperthyroidism, and these foods can help preserve your existing muscle mass and potentially aid in weight gain.
      • Cruciferous vegetables, such as kale, Brussels sprouts, radishes, and cauliflower. Also known as goitrogenic foods , they may inhibit your thyroid glandâs ability to process iodine and produce thyroid hormonesâpotentially easing symptoms of hyperthyroidism. However, you should exercise caution with these vegetables if you have an autoimmune condition like Gravesâ disease, so talk with your healthcare provider first before making these foods a larger part of your diet.

Lifestyle Tips To Better Manage Hypothyroidism

Stress and lack of exercise aren’t good for anyones health. When it comes to the sluggishness, depression, and slowed metabolism from hypothyroidism, neglecting healthy lifestyle habits may worsen hypothyroid symptoms.

Taking time for yourself is important in controlling stress and depression symptoms. For even more benefits, you can try meditation or a yoga class.

You also shouldnt neglect exercise. Exercise at least 150 minutes per week, suggests Rizzo. It helps with weight maintenance! The key is to start off slow with an exercise regimen, whether youre completely new to exercise or havent been active for a while. Certain low-impact, energy-boosting routines, such as tai chi, can also help.

Some dogs may have a genetic link to hypothyroidism. Breeds prone to hypothyroidism include

      • Golden Retriever
      • Cocker Spaniel
      • Airedale Terrier

If you have one of these breeds, youll want to watch your dog for signs that he is developing the disease. But breed predisposition isnt the only cause. There can be other causes too.

      Primary Hypothyroidism In Dogs

Primary hypothyroidism is usually an autoimmune disease autoimmune thyroiditis. Its also called lymphocytic thyroiditis.

It happens when your dogs body mistakes its own thyroid gland and hormones as foreign threats. Then the body produces antibodies to attack and destroy the thyroid gland cells. These attacks cause secondary scarring of the tissue and that leads to loss of thyroid function.

Jean Dodds DVM is well known as an expert on thyroid issues in pets. According to Dr Dodds, nearly 90% of hypothyroidism in dogs is autoimmune.

      Hypothyroidism Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

While there isn’t any particular step you can take to definitively prevent thyroid disease, there are choices you can make that may reduce your risk or, if you’ve been diagnosed with thyroid disease, help you slow down or stop the progression of your condition.

According to the American Thyroid Association , more than 12 percent of people living in the United States will develop a thyroid condition at some time in their lives. The ATA also estimates that around 20 million Americans have thyroid disease, but up to 60 percent may be unaware of it.

Because undiagnosed thyroid disorders can raise your risk for developing a host of other medical conditions, it’s important to be aware of your family history of thyroid disease and pay attention to any unusual symptoms you have.
