High Blood Pressure And Chest Pain
Finally, many people who have hyperthyroidism also have high blood pressure, in part due to the excess activity of the heart. If you also have atherosclerosis , elevated blood pressure can cause chest pain or angina, as well. All this excess strain on the heart can lead to an enlarged heart and thickened heart walls , eventually causing heart failure.
An overactive thyroid can cause other symptoms, too, including:
Hyperthyroidism becomes more common as we age, and whats more, the heart-related symptoms of overactive thyroid also occur more frequently in older men and women.
When Should I Worry About Heart Palpitations
Heart palpitations are usually not dangerous. They may be a sign of a more serious health problem if you also:
- Feel dizzy, confused or lightheaded.
- Have chest pain or pressure.
- Have trouble breathing.
- Pass out when you have palpitations.
- Pain, pressure or tightness in your chest, neck, jaw, arm or upper back.
- Shortness of breath.
- Symptoms that are new or get worse.
The Initial Causes Heart Palpitations Hair Loss Thyroid
The main cause of hair loss is stress. While most of us shed about 50 to 100 strands of hair daily, we also continue to grow new ones at the same rate. This shedding is normal, and its perfectly natural to replace lost hair with new ones. However, if youre losing hair that is excessively slow or isnt growing back, youre experiencing hair fall. There are many possible causes for this condition, but theres no one single solution.
Tinea capitis, also known as scalp ringworm, is a fungal infection that affects the scalp. Symptoms include bald spots and patches of hair loss. Infection may be caused by fungus, and scaly, red patches may develop. In severe cases, sores may develop on the scalp and oozing pus may be present. Treatment with a prescription may be necessary, but the long-term results of taking these medications are not always permanent.
In some cases, temporary hair loss may be the result of a hormonal imbalance. While some women experience hair loss due to hormonal fluctuations, others may experience permanent loss of hair. These changes can be caused by hormones in the body, such as those produced by the thyroid or by the adrenal glands. In severe cases, the loss of hair is caused by medical conditions. Inflammatory diseases can cause an excess of androgen, a male hormone. High levels of vitamin A in the blood and in the body can also result in hair thinning.

How High Thyroid Levels Affect The Heart
More than 30 million Americans about 1 out of every 8 adults have been diagnosed with heart disease, the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States. While high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are major contributors to those numbers, what many people dont know is that heart disease can also be caused by an overactive thyroid .
At Phoenix Heart, PLLC, our team uses state-of-the-art approaches to diagnose the cause of heart problems, including lab tests to check for thyroid activity. With locations in Anthem, Goodyear, and Glendale, Arizona, we make it easy and convenient for Arizonans to get the care they need for optimal heart health at every age.
Heres how thyroid problems can affect your heart and what symptoms to look for.
What You Can Do In The Meantime
Before your appointment, you can try to improve your symptoms by avoiding activities or stresses that might cause your palpitations. Some common triggers include:
- Anxiety or panic attacks
- Too much caffeine or alcohol
- Use of medications or supplements that contain stimulants, such as energy drinks or some cold medicines

Can Too Much Levothyroxine Cause Atrial Fibrillation
How Hyperthyroidism Causes Atrial Fibrillation
If you have atrial fibrillation, a screen to check your thyroid function is in order. Once Tomaselli diagnoses a case of atrial fibrillation, he sets out to find the cause or causes of the arrhythmia. One of his first steps is to check the patients thyroid hormone to see if an overactive thyroid is at the root of the heart problem, even though it’s not the most common cause of atrial fibrillation.
Hyperthyroidism increases heart rate and cardiac output, placing extra strain on the heart. And the most common heart condition for patients with hyperthyroidism is atrial fibrillation, according to a study published in January 2015 in The American Journal of Medicine. Excess thyroid hormone interferes with the hearts natural electric impulses, which can throw it out of rhythm, Tomaselli explains. Other effects of hyperthyroidism include fatigue, increased appetite, and hand tremors.
Just as with atrial fibrillation, it’s important to find the underlying cause for hyperthyroidism to determine the best treatment plan.
Graves disease occurs when the immune system is behind the overproduction of thyroid hormone.

If someone has normal heart function and no evidence of structural heart disease, the PVCs are a nuisance, but benign. If the PVCs are so symptomatic as to be disruptive, try eliminating all of the factors such as caffeine, certain foods, stress, before considering any treatment with medications. When we do treat with medications, we usually try to use simple medications such as beta-blockers first before going on to specific anti-arrhythmic agents. Very frequently, this is enough to improve patients symptoms.

Hyperthyroidism: Excess Thyroid Hormone
The opposite problem, hyperthyroidism, or too much thyroid hormone, is far less common, affecting less than 1% of the population. But it, too, can harm the heart.
The classic symptoms include sleeplessness, heat intolerance, excess sweating, weight loss, extreme hunger, and loose bowels. Excess thyroid hormone also causes the heart to beat harder and faster and may trigger abnormal heart rhythms. One is atrial fibrillation, a disorganized rhythm in the heart’s upper chambers. A related symptom is palpitations, a sudden awareness of your heartbeat. People with hyperthyroidism may also have high blood pressure. In a person with clogged, stiff heart arteries, the combination of a forceful heartbeat and elevated blood pressure may lead to chest pain or angina.
Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome
Sudden arrhythmic death syndrome , is a term used as part of sudden unexpected death syndrome to describe sudden death because of cardiac arrest occasioned by an arrhythmia in the presence or absence of any structural heart disease on autopsy. The most common cause of sudden death in the US is coronary artery disease specifically because of poor oxygenation of the heart muscle, that is myocardial ischemia or a heart attack Approximately 180,000 to 250,000 people die suddenly of this cause every year in the US. SADS may occur from other causes. There are many inherited conditions and heart diseases that can affect young people which can subsequently cause sudden death without advance symptoms.

What Is Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer happens when cancer cells form from the tissues of the thyroid gland.
Most people with thyroid cancer have a thyroid nodule that does not cause any symptoms. If you do have symptoms, you may have swelling or a lump in your neck. The lump may cause problems swallowing. Some people get a hoarse voice.
To tell if the lump or nodule is cancerous, your doctor will order . Most thyroid nodules are not cancerous.

Surgical Removal Of The Thyroid Gland Or Nodule
Also known as a thyroidectomy, surgery to remove the thyroid can be an effective and permanent treatment for hyperthyroidism.
A potential downside of the surgical approach is that there is a small risk of injury to structures near the thyroid gland in the neck, including the nerve to the voice box . The incidence of this is about 1%. Other possible complications include hypocalcemia and airway obstruction, though both occur in under 5% of surgeries.
Concerns about long hospitalizations following thyroid surgery have been all but alleviated over the past few years, since many surgeons are now sending their patients home the day following surgery. Of course, this depends on the underlying health of the patient and their age, among other factors. Some surgeons now are even treating partial thyroidectomy as an outpatient procedure where healthy patients go home a few hours after the surgery.
When hypothyroidism occurs after treatment of an overactive thyroid gland, it can be effectively treated with levothyroxine, a synthetic form of thyroid hormone thats usually taken as one small pill a day. When used in the correct dose, levothyroxine can be safely taken for the remainder of a persons life.

The Common Sinus Bradycardia Symptoms You Need To Know
The diagnosis of sinus bradycardia requires an ECG showing the resting pulse rate is lower than 60 beats per minute. This slower than normal heart rate causes insufficient blood flow throughout the body causing symptoms such as:
- Swelling in the legs
- Fatigue on waking due to reduced metabolic activity during the night
Note: Feeling faint or dizzy spells are a sign your heart rate is abnormally slow, and your brain is not getting enough oxygen. If you are concerned about bradycardia symptoms you should seek immediate medical attention and get your heart checked.

Causes Of Heart Palpitations
Although there are several causes for heart palpitations, certain traits, conditions or habits may raise your risk for the condition. These are known as risk factors and include:
Non-modifiable risk factors: These factors are irreversible and cannot be changed. The more of these risk factors you have, the greater your chance of developing heart palpitations:
Modifiable risk factors: These factors can be modified, treated or controlled through medications or lifestyle changes.
- Excessive amounts of alcohol consumption over the years.
- Excessive amount of caffeine or other stimulants.
- Extreme emotional stress.
- Extreme physical exertion
- Long history of cigarette smoking and/or drug use
- Dehydration: when you use or lose more fluid than you take in, and your body doesnt have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions.
- Certain cold and cough mediations .
Other conditions that may contribute to development of heart palpitations:
- Thyroid disease: a condition that is caused by the over or under function of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is an essential organ for producing thyroid hormones, which maintains the bodys metabolism.
- Heart surgery
- Heart arrhythmias

Changes In Menstrual Periods
Because hyperthyroidism tells your body to move faster, the menstrual cycle can become lighter and faster. You may also notice longer periods of time in between your periods.
On their own, these symptoms may indicate other medical problems. However, when you or your doctor identify more than one of these symptoms at a time, there is a good chance its due to thyroid problems.
Thankfully, most thyroid disorders are treatable and are not life-threatening. However, if you notice a rapid heart rate and experience either a fever or deliriousness, you should call your doctor immediately. These are signs of a hyperthyroid complication called thyrotoxic crisis.

T3 Thyroid Hormone & The Heart
In mainstream medicine, Levothyroxine is the most commonly prescribed thyroid hormone replacement drug, with brand names including Synthroid, Levoxyl, Oroxine and Eltroxin. Levothyroxine drugs contain the synthetic form of only ONE thyroid hormone, T4. T4 is only one portion of the thyroid hormone complex. Yes the majority of thyroid hormones produced by the human thyroid gland are T4, however T3 is the most active useable form of thyroid hormone that can be used in the cells of the body. The conversion of T4 to T3 is a critical element in this puzzle. By doctors strictly relying on T4-only medications, they are under the assumption that our bodies are properly converting the T4 to active T3. For many hypothyroid sufferers like me, our bodies dont convert T4 to T3 properly. Please read my post Top 5 Reasons Doctors Fail To Diagnose Hypothyroidism.
TSH is the gold standard for thyroid diagnosis and treatment in mainstream medicine. Traditional doctors will test TSH and sometimes T4 levels when they suspect thyroid dysfunction, however many do NOT test Free T3 levels. Many traditional doctors will NOT treat patients with natural desiccated thyroid or synthetic T3 drugs even if their patients are not doing well on their T4-only drugs. This focus on TSH and T4 in mainstream medicine is particularly disturbing to me considering the studies published linking low Free T3 levels to heart disease.
Low T3 syndrome is a strong predictor of death in cardiac patients.
Can Thyroid Medication Cause Heart Palpitations
Herein, can levothyroxine cause irregular heart beats?
Effect of Hypothyroid Treatment on the HeartOne of the main concerns with starting levothyroxine replacement is the precipitation of myocardial ischemia or arrhythmias, which, although rare, are known to occur.
Beside above, does levothyroxine cause heart problems? Levothyroxine Linked to Heart Risks in Patients With Thyroid Cancer. Hyperthyroidism is a well-known risk factor for atrial fibrillation and ischemic stroke, and has been reported to cause angina or myocardial infarction in patients with underlying coronary heart disease.
Simply so, what are the side effects of too much thyroid medication?
Signs and Symptoms of Overmedication
- Elevated pulse and blood pressure.
- Anxiety, nervous energy, tremors.
- Feeling irritable, overemotional, erratic, or depressed.
- Difficulty concentrating.

Hyperthyroidism And Heart Disease
As you have learned, hyperthyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland produces and secretes excess thyroid hormones into your blood. In most cases, the exact causes for thyroid problems, including hyperthyroidism, are hard to determine and are left unclear when the treatment has already begun.
Since we are talking about a condition that characterizes itself with excess production of the Thyroxine hormones , a hormone which we mentioned to affect the work of our heart, it is expected that certain symptoms will develop.
In fact, some of the main symptoms of hyperthyroidism come from the cardiovascular system. These symptoms include rapid heartbeat , high blood pressure, nervousness, palpitations, and many others. There are several different heart problems that are usually caused by the presence of hyperthyroidism.

Heart Palpitations And Ectopic Beats
Heart palpitations are heartbeats that suddenly become more noticeable.
Your heart may feel like it’s pounding, fluttering or beating irregularly, often for just a few seconds or minutes. You may also feel these sensations in your throat or neck.
Palpitations may seem alarming, but in most cases they’re harmless and are not a sign of a serious problem.
Sometimes you may feel an extra or missed beat. These are known as ectopic beats and are also usually nothing to worry about.
