How Can A Person With Thyroid Lose Weight

Reasons Why Many Thyroid Sufferers Cant Lose Weight

Can you lose weight without a thyroid?

Many people with thyroid conditions have difficulty losing weight. This mainly pertains to those people who have a hypothyroid disorder, although it does occasionally hinder those who have a hyperthyroid condition as well. In either case, there are three primary reasons why many people with a thyroid condition have difficulty losing weight:

Reason #1: They Eat the Wrong Foods. This of course is the area that most people who are overweight focus on, as without question restricting the number of calories can help you to lose weight. But just playing the calorie game often times isnt enough, as if you restrict calories but still eat unhealthy foods, then you still may have difficulty losing weight and/or keeping any weight you lose off. Of course many people dont really know what healthy foods consist of, and it can become even more confusing trying to find out by reading books or surfing the internet. And since most medical doctors dont learn too much about nutrition in medical school, they too frequently wont be able to recommend an ideal thyroid diet.

Of course there are other things you can do besides walking, as swimming is a great way to exercise as well. If you have a gym membership you can use an elliptical machine, treadmill, or stationary bike. My personal favorite is the rowing machine, although I will admit that initially it took a couple of months before I had the stamina to use this machine for 30 minutes nonstop.

Why One Of The Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism Is Weight Loss

In hypothyroidism, the thyroid makes very little thyroid hormone. On the flip side, someone with hyperthyroidism has a thyroid that makes too much thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism involves higher levels of thyroid hormones, which makes your metabolism speed up. If you have hypothyroidism, your metabolism slows down.

Other Causes Of Hypothyroidism

In some cases, hypothyroidism results from a problem with the pituitary gland, which is at the base of the brain. This gland produces thyroid-stimulating hormone , which tells the thyroid to do its job. If your pituitary gland does not produce enough TSH, levels of thyroid hormones will fall. Other causes of hypothyroidism include temporary inflammation of the thyroid or medications that affect thyroid function.

Additional Tips To Lose Weight With An Underactive Thyroid

Here are some extra pointers to help you lose weight with an underactive thyroid:

  • Prioritise sleep: Alongside poor diet and exercise, short sleep duration is one of the strongest risk factors for obesity. Good quality sleep is fundamental for weight loss.
  • Thyroid support supplements: Anecdotal reports suggest supplements can give you more energy, at least for the first few months of use. But theyre likely unnecessary if you regularly eat nutritious foods.
  • Use smaller plates and small spoons: Studies show the bigger the plate and the bigger the cutlery, the more calories we consume . This proven phenomenon is called the Delbouef illusion.
  • Plate your meals first: Instead of putting all the prepared food at the table , plate your meal first and then sit down. You are much less likely to go for a second round.
  • Drink lots of water: Keep a water bottle on hand wherever you go. Research suggests the more water we drink before meals, the fewer calories we eat overall .
  • Be mindful: Mindful eating is about becoming more aware of your experiences, physical cues and feelings about food. It is based on a form of meditation called mindfulness.

Manage Your Metabolic Set Point

Does it seem that your scale always seems to land on the same number, no matter how hard you diet, how much you cut calories, or how hard you exercise? If so, you may be struggling with a malfunctioning set point.

The set point is the brains target weight for a persons body. Just as the body works to maintain a fairly standard temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, it also works to maintain a body weight that is physiologically comfortable. The set point is maintained by the hypothalamus, and is often genetically influenced. However, a number of things can cause the set point to change, moving a persons normal weight to a higher number on the scale, and sabotaging weight loss efforts.

One of the more common causes of set point malfunction is aggressive or yo-yo dieting. Calorie restrictive diets can actually slow thyroid function, resulting in a slower metabolism. Illnesses such as chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia can also cause the set point to malfunction. Some medications can cause the set point to increase, including common antidepressants such as Paxil, Celexa, Zoloft and Lexapro, anti-convulsant medications, blood pressure medications, anti-seizure or pain medications such as Neurontin or Lyrica, birth control pills, synthetic hormone replacement, and diabetic medications that stimulate insulin secretion, such as glyburide and Amaryll.

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland that sits near the base of your neck.

It makes and stores thyroid hormones that affect nearly every cell in your body .

When the thyroid gland receives a signal called thyroid-stimulating hormone , it releases thyroid hormones into the bloodstream. This signal is sent from the pituitary gland, a small gland found at the base of your brain, when thyroid hormone levels are low .

Occasionally, the thyroid gland doesnt release thyroid hormones, even when there is plenty of TSH. This is called primary hypothyroidism and the most common type of hypothyroidism.

Approximately 90% of primary hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimotos thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland .

Trial The Autoimmune Protocol Diet

This step is only for those with Hashimotos or another autoimmune disease, and only recommended if you already consistently follow steps 1 to 5 but are still very overweight.

The Autoimmune Protocol is an elimination diet that temporarily cuts out numerous food groups including dairy, grains, nuts and seeds, legumes, nightshade vegetables and more. It is said to have emerged from the Paleo movement , but to describe it as Paleo seems too basic.

The AIP goes by the premise that certain food chemicals and compounds cause low-grade inflammation in the gut of individuals with an autoimmune disease . Low-grade inflammation appears to be a driving factor behind many modern health conditions, including autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorder and obesity too .

By removing the everyday trigger foods in your diet, inflammation subsides giving your body the opportunity to recover and reset known medically as remission. This is what occurs in celiac disease patients when they remove gluten from the diet, or most IBS patients following a low FODMAP diet.

Add More Protein Into Your Diet

Along with proper exercise, Dr. Apovian says protein is the other key to building muscle. Her suggestion is backed by the Center for Nutrition and Weight Management, which recommends a higher-protein diet of 1.2 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of ideal body weight for women with hypothyroidism. That means, if your ideal weight is 130 pounds , you should have 70 to 90 grams of protein daily.

A good rule is to build your meals around protein, but also include lots of veggies, healthy carbs like fresh fruit and whole grains, and healthy fats like avocados and olive oil.

Even with these guidelines, its worth working with an R.D. to come up with a personal diet plan for hypothyroidism, as certain foods or dietary restrictions can screw with your hormone levels even more.
