Study Size And Participants

In the present cross-sectional case control study, all hypothyroidism patients were selected among referents to the endocrinology clinic of Jahrom city in 2018. In the study, the treatment group included patients with pre-diagnosed hypothyroidism under Levothyroxine therapy or newly diagnosed patients. Written informed consent was acquired from all study subjects. Control group consisted of healthy people, who were similar to other groups in terms of confounding variables. Exclusion criteria were to have collagen vascular and Celiac disease and type-1 diabetes mellitus. Finally, 633 Immune Hypothyroid and 305 non-Immune Hypothyroid and 200 healthy subjects were enrolled . The exclusion criteria for this study were type 1 diabetes, lupus, collagen vascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, and also patients who underwent vitamin D supplementation and vitamin D interacting medications . While the participants enrolment were done based on their previous thyroid function workups during referral to thyroid clinic, to investigate the disease and vitamin D interactions, new blood samples were taken to evaluate both vitamin D levels and thyroid function tests in same time at last month of summer with adequate sun exposure. Because, the circulating vitamin D levels ranges from season to season, in our study all blood samples were taken at the same period of august 2018 so, the confounding effect of seasonal variations of vitamin D was eliminated.

How Much Vitamin E You Need

Since some problems may occur with too much vitamin E supplementation, it is essential to know how much of this vitamin your body needs daily.

Healthy men and women are advised to consume a minimum of 15mg vitamin E on a daily bases, which equals 22.4IU.

The Council newsletter went on to say,The researchers calculated that those who were severely deficient in vitamin D had nearly twice as high the risk of a positive TPO-Ab test compared to those who were sufficient.

So, does that mean vitamin D deficiency leads to autoimmune disease or that those with autoimmune disease are more likely to be deficient in Vitamin D?? Unfortunately, the researchers havent figured that one out yet and/or only offer opinion.

The one thing researchers do know is thyroid treatment isnt optimaland may not workif you do not have adequate vitamin D for the crucial final metabolic step, which takes place at the site where thyroid hormone actually works. This happens inside the nucleus of the cell. Vitamin D needs to be present at sufficient levels in the cell in order for the thyroid hormone to actually affect that cell. That is why vitamin D is so crucial.

Vitamin D Deficiency And Thyroid Disease

There’s increasing evidence to suggest that low levels of vitamin D may play a role in thyroid disorders. For instance, research has suggested a possible link between vitamin D deficiency and autoimmune thyroid disorders, namely Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the most common cause of hypothyroidism , and Grave’s disease, characterized by an overactive thyroid.

In one study, 72% of subjects with autoimmune thyroid disease were deficient in vitamin D, whereas just under 31% of healthy subjects had low levels of vitamin D. Similarly, a study of people in Greece with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis revealed that more than 85% of them had low levels of vitamin D, as well as high levels of anti-thyroid antibodies.

Vitamin D supplementation also has shown promise as a way to help treat thyroid disease. In the same Greek study, for example, the Hashimoto thyroiditis patients who were deficient in vitamin D took 1,200 to 4,000 international units of vitamin D every day for four months, after which time they had significantly lower levels of anti-thyroid antibodies.

In yet another study, people with hypothyroidism who took extra vitamin D supplements for 12 weeks had improvements in blood levels of thyroid stimulating hormone .
