What Are The Functions Of The Thyroid Gland What Are The Symptoms Of Thyroid Disorder
The thyroid gland is a small endocrine organ in front of your windpipe. It is responsible for controlling your bodys metabolism. This is done through the production of thyroid hormones . Production of thyroid hormones requires iodine, an essential element most people now receive from the salt they add to their food. Alongside the thyroid gland are four small organs known as the parathyroid hormones. These control your bodys calcium levels.
Disorders of the thyroid gland can result in hypo or hyperthyroid conditions.

Do Thyroid Glands Cause Your Throat To Hurt
Throat pain alone cannot be attributed to the thyroid gland as there may be other causes from the other structures in the neck. It is therefore important to differentiate thyroid pain from other causes of throat pain. Why does the thyroid pain? Like any part of the body, pain may arise from the thyroid gland when there is any injury or disease.

What Are The Risks Of Removing The Thyroid Gland
Behind your childs thyroid gland runs the recurrent laryngeal nerves that help to move the vocal folds and the parathyroid glands which help regulate their bodys calcium levels.
Some of the major risk factors following the removal of the thyroid gland are:
- A hoarse/breathy voice.
- Low calcium levels.
After surgery your child will need to take a medication to supplement the thyroid function and in some cases a medication to keep calcium levels elevated.
Other risk factors include:
- A scar on the neck.
- Fluid collection under the skin.
- The need for future procedures such as removal of the lymph nodes from the neck.
What Are Goiters And Thyroid Nodules
An enlarged thyroid gland can be felt as a lump under the skin at the front of the neck. When it is large enough to see easily, it’s called a goiter.
A thyroid nodule is a lump or enlarged area in the thyroid gland. A nodule may simply be swollen tissue, an overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue, or a collection of fluid called a cyst. Most thyroid nodules in children are not caused by cancer.

When Should You Go To The Doctor With A Sore Throat
In most cases, your sore throat will improve with at-home treatment. However, its time to see your doctor if a severe sore throat and a fever over 101 degrees lasts longer than one to two days you have difficulty sleeping because your throat is blocked by swollen tonsils or adenoids or a red rash appears.
What Else Could It Be
A lump in your thyroid could be caused by an infection or a goiter, which is an abnormal growth of the thyroid gland. It might not be cancerous at all. Lumps in the thyroid usually arenât.
But itâs possible to have thyroid cancer without any symptoms at all.
Your doctor will examine your thyroid during routine physical exams. If you have any symptoms between checkups, such as a new nodule on the gland or a rapidly growing one, you should make an appointment to have your thyroid gland checked. Your doctor will do several tests to diagnose the source of the problem and decide on the best treatment.

How Can My Doctor Tell If I Have A Thyroid Nodule That Is Cancerous
Your doctor can do several different tests. One test is called fine-needle aspiration. Your doctor will take a tissue sample from your thyroid gland and examine it under a microscope to see if its cancerous. The tissue sample is taken with a very small needle.
Another test your doctor may do is an ultrasound. This test uses sound waves to make a picture of the thyroids shape and the size of the nodules. It can help your doctor determine whether the nodule is a solid tumor or a cyst filled with fluid.
A third test is a thyroid scan. Your doctor will inject harmless radioactive iodine into a vein in your arm. The iodine is absorbed by your thyroid gland and makes it glow as your doctor takes a special picture. Your doctor can learn about the nodule depending on how much or how little of the iodine shows in the picture.

Signs You May Need To Get Your Thyroid Checked
Dr. Julie Doan is a physician specializing in Internal Medicine, practicing at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center.
Its estimated that one-in-eight women will develop thyroid problems during her lifetime. Stats like that deserve your attention. So what exactly is a thyroid, and why does it have such a big impact on your health?
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located near the front of the neck. The wings of the butterfly, or lobes, rest next to the trachea and esophagus. Although relatively small, the thyroid gland has a big job to do. It produces hormones that help control the function of many of the bodys most important organs including the heart, brain, liver, kidneys and skin.
Producing too much or too little thyroid hormone can cause problems with these organ systems and produce a wide range of symptoms that may require medical treatment. Common signs your thyroid might be off include:· Fatigue· Puffy face· Hoarseness
For women, a thyroid condition can result in heavier than normal or irregular menstrual periods. It can also affect ovulation, making it harder to conceive. Before starting a family, its recommended you consult with your doctor about your thyroid health and, if any issues are discovered, medication can be prescribed to manage them.
An undiagnosed thyroid condition can impact both mom and baby:

Thyroid Goiter: When Is A Radioiodine Scan Ordered
If you have a thyroid goiter and your blood tests also demonstrate that your thyroid hormone level is too high , this is the only instance that a radioiodine scan is indicated. In these cases, the thyroid stimulating hormone will be very low and in cases of Grave’s disease, the thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin will be very high. The thyroid goiter patient may or may not have recognized symptoms of their hyperthyroidism.
During the thyroid scan, the patient will be given a small amount of radioactive iodine in a pill and a special imaging camera is utilized to determine how much iodine is taken up by the thyroid gland and if the thyroid goiter takes up iodine throughout the thyroid gland or whether there is a single “hot” area in the thyroid , relative to the remainder of the thyroid gland . If a thyroid nodule has less iodine uptake than the rest of the thyroid gland, then the thyroid nodule is called a “cold nodule”. In patients with multinodular goiter, frequently several of the nodules of the thyroid will be cystic and filled with fluid. These cystic areas of a multinodular goiter are expected to take up less iodine than the rest of the gland and appear “cold”.
Hot nodules are almost always non-cancerous but the preferred management of hot nodules is frequently surgery since it is a clear, safe and 100% effective therapy for the hyperthyroidism.

The Often Overlooked Warning Signs Of Thyroid Cancer
The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2020, approximately 52,890 new cases of thyroid cancer will be diagnosed and that there will be approximately 2,180 deaths from thyroid cancer. While most thyroid cancer is found by accident, there are warning signs you should be aware of for a better chance of early detection.
Why Do I Feel Something In My Throat When I Swallow
Often, globus pharyngeus is due to minor inflammation in the throat or at the back of the mouth. The throat muscles and mucous membranes can feel strained when the throat is dry, causing feelings that something is stuck in the throat. Medications and some medical conditions may cause dry throat.

What Are Thyroid Nodules
A thyroid nodule is an unusual growth of thyroid cells in the thyroid gland.
The thyroid is part of the endocrine system, which is made up of glands that secrete various hormones into the bloodstream. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ that is located on the front of the neck, just under the Adam’s apple . The thyroid gland, which is made up of the right and left lobes connected to the isthmus , produces and releases thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones control functions such as body temperature, digestion and heart functions.

What Is A Goitre
A goitre is an abnormal swelling of the thyroid gland that causes a lump to form in the throat.
The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, just in front of the windpipe . It produces thyroid hormones, which help to regulate the body’s metabolism .
The thyroid gland is not usually noticeable. However, if it swells it produces a lump in the throat known as a goitre.
The size of a goitre can vary from person to person. In most cases, the swelling is small and does not cause any symptoms. However, in more severe cases, the swelling can increase so dramatically that breathing and swallowing are affected.

Will Tonsillitis Go Away On Its Own
Tonsillitis is an infection or inflammation of the tonsils. The tonsils are balls of lymph tissue on both sides of the throat, above and behind the tongue. They are part of the immune system, which helps the body fight infection. Tonsillitis often goes away on its own after 4 to 10 days.
Thyroid Nodule Symptom # : A Cough That Just Won’t Go Away Frequent Coughing And A Need To Keep Clearing Your Throat
- What to do about it?
Thyroid nodules that cause the patient to cough should always be evaluated with an ultrasound scan. Occasionally a CAT scan is required because it is better at looking at big thyroid goiters than ultrasound is . Sometimes it just can’t be known for sure if the thyroid nodule is actually causing the coughing. Often these patients undergo a laryngoscopy . If the thyroid nodule is causing the coughing, or there is a high liklihood it is the cause, then surgery is indicated. Of course, it is now very important for you to chose your surgeon wisely. The nerves to the vocal cords are occasionally damaged by a surgeon removing a thyroid and this will cause severe horseness and a loss of voice for months or even forever. Thyroid Enlargement And Difficulty Swallowing
Thyroid enlargement can cause difficulty swallowing, or dysphagia, as a result of the thyroid gland directly compressing the swallowing organs. The thyroid gland, which is usually about the size of a quarter, can become enlarged as a symptom of various thyroid disorders, as well as other medical conditions. While not all patients with enlarged thyroid glands experience compressive symptoms, studies have shown that up to 33% of those with benign goiters do report difficulty swallowing and shortness of breath.
Conditions associated with enlarged thyroid include:
Thyroid cancer and other medical conditions can also contribute to or cause thyroid enlargement.

Inspect And Palpate The Face
Look for signs of hyperthyroidism
- Lid lag this is where the eye-lid will not move as quickly as the eye downwards when the patient looks downwards.
A thyroglossal cyst will also move on swallowing.
- The thyroid will ALWAYS elevate .
- Anything attached to the cricoid cartilage will also move on swallowing
- Lymph nodes will probably not move on swallowing.
- Anything not attached to the thyroid or cricoid lipoma, carotid body tumour, epidermal cyst.
You should do this from behind to allow a better feeling of the lumps and greater control of the fingers. You should use both hands at the same time to compare left and right sides. Be gentle because it will probably be uncomfortable for the patient. Ask if they have any pain and explain what you are going to do.
Identify the cricoid cartilage. Then palpate for masses first in the anterior triangle, then in the posterior triangle. Remember to check all the way down to the clavicles, and as far posteriorly as the trapezius. If you find a lump you should note its:

Benefits And Limitation Of The Self
An at-home self-exam known as the “neck check” can help you find thyroid lumps or enlargements on your own thyroid gland. These growths may point to any number of thyroid conditions from nodules and goiters to thyroid cancer.
Lumps in the neck can be caused by thyroid disease, and they can also be caused by a variety of other conditions, such as lymph node enlargement, lymphoma, an infectious abscess, or a traumatic injury.
In general, a neck check is not considered the most accurate or reliable way to identify thyroid disease. You can have serious thyroid disease if you have a completely normal neck check. On the other hand, a major growth can often be a sign of an easily treatable condition, such as an iodine deficiency.
In the end, there are limitations as to what a neck check can tell you. A 2017 report from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force concluded that neck palpation was able to detect thyroid nodules in only 11.6% of cases. Ultrasound, an imaging procedure using sound waves, was five times more accurate in detecting abnormal growths.

i have the same issue. I have found a little bit of an answer and will probably take it to my doctor.
taken from wikipedia..
A less common cause, distinguished by a “lump in the throat” accompanied with clicking sensation and considerable pain when swallowing, may be due to thyroid-cartilage rubbing against anomalous asymmetrical laryngeal anatomy e.g. the superior cornu abrading against the thyroid lamina, surgically trimming the offending thyroid-cartilage provides immediate relief in all cases. However this cause is frequently misdiagnosed, despite requiring a simple clinical examination involving careful palpation of the neck side to side which elicits the same click sensation and pain as when swallowing, most cases are due to prior trauma to the neck. High resolution computed tomographic or MRI scan of the larynx is usually required to fully understand the anomalous laryngeal anatomy. Anterior displacement the thyroid ala on the affected side while swallowing can help resolve symptoms.
