Does Low Thyroid Cause Low Testosterone

What Do You Do About This Low Progesterone

Hidden Cause #19 Why You STILL Have Low Thyroid Symptoms – High Testosterone & Low Binding Globulins

There are a few reasons for low progesterone that need to be understood before resorting to progesterone replacement. I will tell you that I dont believe in putting every woman who has low progesterone on progesterone replacement and thats because there are a number of reasons why the progesterone could be low. Let me explain.

Just because a patient has low thyroid hormone does not automatically make them a candidate for thyroid hormone replacement, The same hold true for woman with low progesterone. Just because you are low in progesterone, does not automatically make you a candidate for progesterone.

We need to stop treating patients with this oversimplified approach where if one hormone is low we just give that hormone.

We need to understand WHY the hormone is low in the first place. In some woman the low progesterone can be caused a lack of ovulation. Taking a woman who is not ovulating and putting her on a birth control pill will make that situation worse and create more progesterone deficiency and more thyroid problems.

Remember what I said in the beginning of the video- If a woman doesnt ovulate, she wont produce progesterone- she become increasingly estrogen dominant.

Another reason for problems with progesterone production comes down to things that influence luteinizing hormone levels or LH levels. LH is made by your brain and it instructs the ovaries to make progesterone.

Causes Of An Underactive Thyroid

An underactive thyroid is when your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of the hormone thyroxine .

Most cases of an underactive thyroid are caused by the immune system attacking the thyroid gland and damaging it, or by damage that occurs as a result of treatments for thyroid cancer or an overactive thyroid.

Hypothyroidism And Testosterone Replacement Therapy The Symptoms

The symptoms of low thyroid may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Elevated cholesterol and weight gain
  • Dry skin
  • Inability to concentrate and remember
  • Low blood pressure
  • Feeling cold
  • Constipation
  • Its interesting to note that some of these symptoms overlap those we typically identify as symptoms of low testosterone, particularly the ones related to sexual function, energy levels, concentration, hair loss, and weight fluctuation.

These common symptoms actually arent so surprising given the possible relationship between the hypothyroidism and Low T.

Why Do I Need A Tsh Test

You may need a TSH test if you have symptoms of too much thyroid hormone in your blood , or too little thyroid hormone .

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism, also known as overactive thyroid, include:

Symptoms of hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, include:

    • Weight gain
    • Low tolerance for cold temperatures
    • Irregular menstrual periods
    • Constipation

Androgen Deficiency Negatively Affects The Risk Factors Of Cardiovascular Disease In Men With Hypothyroidism

A January 2020 study suggests: Long-term androgen deficiency in men with hypothyroidism is an important problem due to the fact that it leads to concomitant cardiac pathology, which remains the leading cause of mortality in the world. The presence of different points of view on the problem of androgen deficiency and its effect on the risk factors for cardiovascular disease in patients with hypothyroidism attracts attention.

In this study, researchers assessed the clinical signs of age-related androgen deficiency and their association with cardiovascular risk factors in men with hypothyroidism. 84 patients were examined, 38 of them with hypothyroidism and age-related androgen deficiency, 46 patients with hypothyroidism and normal testosterone levels.

What did the researchers find? The , triglycerides and glucose escape , and is associated with subclinical depression. In men with hypothyroidism and androgen deficiency , the average blood pressure in the daytime significantly exceeds the similar rates in patients with hypothyroidism and normal levels of testosterone.

    Checking The Thyroid Self Test

One of the ways to check whether you have an underactive thyroid is to measure your basal temperature once a day.

The basal thermometer should be sensitive enough to measure temperature to one decimal point. These are widely available in pharmacies and mostly inexpensive.

The temperature should be taken once a day for seven days. The key is to take the temperature before taking any food or drink, and prior to going to the bathroom.

Write down the measured temperature every day and add up the numbers, then divide them by the number of days, which is seven.

Normal body temperature is between 36.4°C 36.7°C or 97.6°F 98.2°F. If your measured average temperature is below this range, you may have underactive thyroid.

If you feel like your symptoms may mean your thyroid is not working properly visit the doctor as soon as possible. Many doctors attribute the symptoms to aging only. Make sure that you get all the necessary tests. Insist if needed!

A Saliva Hormone Panel Will Help Prevent Your Hormones From Getting Out Of Balance

Ive stated in the past that in order to diagnose estrogen dominance one should obtain a male or female hormone panel. This will show the levels of both estrogen and progesterone, along with other important pituitary hormones. While the other hormones might not directly relate to estrogen dominance, they all interact with one another, and so in my expert opinion, its a good idea to look at the whole picture.

If you have been diagnosed with estrogen dominance and had this corrected through a natural treatment protocol, then its not a bad idea to obtain an annual hormone panel as a preventative measure. This will help you to maintain these healthy hormone levels, as many times a person wont become symptomatic until there is a significant imbalance.

By obtaining a salivary hormone panel, we can see if there are any minor or major imbalances in the hormones, and if so formulate the necessary protocol to correct this. As you would probably guess, correcting a minor hormone imbalance usually isnt as challenging as correcting a major case of estrogen dominance that has been ignored for many years.

What You Can Do To Get Healthy Thyroid Hormone Levels

After all this thyroid-hormone-levels-gone-wrong talk, youâd be justified in thinking to yourself, âOkay, so how can I get healthy thyroid hormone levels to help avoid a thyroid problem?â

First, make sure youâre getting the right amount of iodine in your diet .

For men and non-pregnant women, the recommended daily allowance for iodine is 150 micrograms . For pregnant women, that number rises to 220 mcg per day â and 290 mcg a day for women who are breastfeeding.

If you want to check if you have an underactive thyroid gland âor if youâre interested in finding out if you have high thyroid levelsâgetting a thyroid function test can be a good place to start.

Of course, if your thyroid hormone level isnt within a normal range and you may have a thyroid dysfunction, consult with your healthcare provider to learn what solution is best for you to help get your hormone levels back in balance . If you do have a thyroid disorder or thyroid condition, your healthcare provider may recommend ongoing thyroid testing to monitor results of your treatment plan.

    What Is Amh Or Anti

Hidden Cause #18 Why You STILL Have Low Thyroid Symptoms – High Testosterone & Excess Conversion

AMH is a hormone that is released as egg follicles are developing into an egg. It is only released when egg follicles are in the mid-stages of developing, that is, when they are less than 9 mm in diameter. An egg follicle is normally 18-24 mm when it releases the egg at ovulation. Dormant egg follicles, or primordial follicles, are the ones that have been in the ovaries since you were born. These follicles are just resting, waiting for their turn to become eggs and therefore they do not secrete AMH.

    Final Thoughts + Recap

Hypothyroidism, while more common in women, should not be overlooked in men.

The consequence of low circulating levels of thyroid hormone in the body impacts other important hormone systems in men – especially testosterone levels.

What’s also important is that these low levels of testosterone may not improve with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

Men also may require a higher total dose of thyroid hormone and may require more T3 when compared to women.

Ultimately if you are being treated for hypothyroidism as a male and not improving, consider checking other hormones and/or changing/altering your thyroid medication.

    Thyroid Hormones: Metabolism And Functions

Thyroid hormones are essential to your metabolism. In fact, many of your bodyâs cells have thyroid hormone receptors, which means that thyroid hormones can influence your metabolism in a host of ways.

Take fat metabolism, for example. Thyroid hormones help your body burn fat â providing you with more energy. As a result of this effect on fat metabolism, thyroid hormones bump up your basal metabolic rate â which means youâll be burning off fat even when youâre not physically active.

Thyroid hormones also impact carbohydrate metabolism. For instance, thyroid hormones stimulate the production of glucose . Your brain runs on glucose as its energy source, so if it werenât for your thyroid hormones, your brain couldnât function. The result would be a bit like unplugging your computer from its power source â or taking out its battery!

Whatâs more, thyroid hormones also control your bodyâs internal temperature, protecting your organs from frosty temperature in the winter or boiling-hot conditions during the summer. In women, thyroid hormones help maintain a regular menstrual cycle â just one more example of the large number of ways thyroid hormones regulate so many aspects of your body.

In short, to feel energized and be healthy, you need optimal thyroid levels. But thereâs a catch: you have to have the right amounts of thyroid hormones. When your body doesnât have the right levels of thyroid hormones, your health falters.

    Testosterone Levels And Hypothyroidism

What is the role of testosterone in thyroid health? Well, this male sex hormone plays a big role, per several research studies.

Primary hypothyroidism can reduce free testosterone levels and the opposite can be true.

Experts mainly associate hypothyroidism or low thyroid function with lower testosterone levels, and elevated thyroid function or hyperthyroidism with increased testosterone.

When it comes to hypothyroidism, we usually think of women since they are eight times more likely to develop this condition, but males are affected too.

With hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland doesnt emit enough thyroid hormone for our bodies, and the body relies on this hormone to function properly. Without it, a person can experience several physical and mental issues.

Some people have no symptoms regarding the hypothyroidism. Same as testosterone levels, thyroid hormone levels decline in production with aging.

Without a functional thyroid, our bodies wouldnt be able to break down proteins, or process carbohydrates and vitamins.

When the thyroid is functioning well, the body is usually warm, able to cope with temperature changes, but when the thyroid is underactive the body is often very cold.

Besides body being cold, some of the most common hypothyroidism symptoms include:

    • Fatigue
    • Hair loss
    • Reduced immunity to infections

These symptoms can be caused by many other conditions, but having several of them at the same moment should be the alarm to check the thyroid.

    What Is A Tsh Test

TSH stands for thyroid stimulating hormone. A TSH test is a blood test that measures this hormone. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located near your throat. Your thyroid makes hormones that regulate the way your body uses energy. It also plays an important role in regulating your weight, body temperature, muscle strength, and even your mood. TSH is made in a gland in the brain called the pituitary. When thyroid levels in your body are low, the pituitary gland makes more TSH. When thyroid levels are high, the pituitary gland makes less TSH. TSH levels that are too high or too low can indicate your thyroid isnt working correctly.

Underactive Thyroid Sign: You Cant Poop

Hypothyroidism results in decreased gut motility, or a slowing of the gut contractions that help move your waste through your digestive tract and out of your body.

As the contractionscalled peristalsisslow, your body has more time to reabsorb water from the stool your system hasnt passed yet, making it harder in the process, says Dr. Adimoolam.

Slowing gut contractions can result in constipation. You may also end up having a harder time pooping simply because your stool is harder than it should be.

    Defect #7 Thyroid Receptor

If thyroid hormone cannot get into the cell there will be low thyroid symptoms despite thyroid hormone levels in the body. Receptor site defects can be caused by elevations in cortisol, homocysteine or vitamin A deficiency.

    Bonus defect Autoimmune thyroid

In industrialized countries, the vast majority of primary hypothyroidism issues are due to an autoimmune condition called Hashimotos syndrome. If this is the case, it is no longer a thyroid issue, but rather an immune system issue and must be managed as such.

Seven different people. Seven different issues. All resulting in the exact same symptoms. And most of the issues probably missed in the conventional medical system.

Testosterone Levels Are Often A Problem For Men With Thyroid Problems

This is no real surprise as all systems of the body are impacted when thyroid hormones are low or are not working effectively.

I will assume in this post that all the basics of low iron, B12, other nutrients, low cortisol and blood sugar issues have been addressed and are not relevant.

Thyroid Symptoms in Men ( Low Testosterone Symptoms)

To understand the relationship between hypothyroidism and low testosterone levels, we first need to understand how the thyroid hormones affect the male reproductive system.

In a nutshell, there are a number of thyroid hormone receptors in the areas to be discussed below.

An increase or decrease of thyroid hormones flooding the said receptors can lead to the following changes:

Estrogen Dominance Cause #: Adrenal Glands Cortisol And Prolonged Stress

Dealing with chronic stress on a regular basis will stress out your adrenal glands. This in turn can decrease the amount of progesterone produced, which will cause a progesterone deficiency. This of course takes time to occur, but those people with poor stress handling skills who deal with chronic stress daily will inevitably develop adrenal gland problems, which over time will most likely lead to a progesterone deficiency.

What Is A Normal Amh Level

Very high AMH is anything greater than 28.5 pmol/L. This is thought to be a sign of PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome where many egg follicles are stuck in early stages of development. It is correctable by addressing and normalizing the hormone imbalances associated with PCOS. More on that here.

    Normal AMH = 10.7 28.5 pmol/L

    Low normal AMH = 7.1 10.7 pmol/L

    Low AMH = 3.6 7.1 pmol/L

Very low AMH = less than 3.6 pmol/L

    The Link Between Metabolism

Another example: Metabolism. Testosterone reacts with DNA receptors in your body to tell your muscles where to grow. When a muscle grows, its essentially taking body fat and transferring it into a different form.

Without that interaction, body fat remains body fat, regardless of how much you exercise. Thats why unexplained weight gain or lack of weight loss despite spent energy is a huge symptom of low testosterone levels.

The thyroid hormones are responsible for regulating the metabolism that testosterone makes work in the first place. Without decent levels of testosterone to kick start the metabolism into working, thyroid hormones arent sure what work to do. Cue an off-beat metabolism, resulting in even more unexplained weight issues.

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Hypothyroidism In Men

    Whatâs behind low thyroid function?

One way to diagnose hypothyroidism in men is to check the patients history and blood tests and to check the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormones and thyroid hormones . Increase TSH levels and decreased T3 and T4 hormones indicate hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroid replacement therapy is commonly treated with a synthetic version of T4 thats called Synthroid .

    Causes Of Hyperthyroidism In Men

A condition known as Graves disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism for men, though women are still more likely to develop this autoimmune disorder.

Having Graves disease means your immune system mistakenly attacks a healthy thyroid gland, causing it to produce too much thyroid hormone. It usually develops between the ages of 30 and 50, though it can form at any age.

    Other causes include:

    • nodules, which are abnormal clusters of thyroid cells within the gland
    • Plummers disease, also known as toxic nodular goiter, which is more common in women and people over age 60
    • thyroiditis, any of several conditions that cause inflammation of the thyroid gland
    • too much iodine intake from medicines or diet

There are many signs of hyperthyroidism. Some, like difficulty sleeping, you may not notice or think of as symptoms of a serious underlying health condition. Others, like an abnormally rapid heartbeat should get your attention quickly.

Other common symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:

    • unexpected weight loss, even when food consumption and appetite remain unchanged
    • irregular heartbeat

    Testosterone And Visual Motor Skills

Mental and emotional symptoms, such as poor memory and depression, may indicate low testosterone, but a study published in 2014 also found that it affected mens visual motor skills, also known as hand-eye coordination. For example, men may notice they cannot catch a ball as readily as they used to or play a video game with as much accuracy. Like many of the other symptoms of low testosterone, men may attribute this to getting older. However, these types of symptoms often are the result of a physical condition that can be treated.
