Does the ketogenic diet cause thyroid issues?

Again, there isnt a lot of research available and there are also only a handful of thyroid experts out there who have expressed any real concern. So most of us rely on the results we see repeated in our and our peers communities.

But here are the two concerns about;typical ketogenic diets;that I have heard expressed for women relating to their having thyroid disease:

1. Does a typical ketogenic diet lower T3 levels to an unhealthy level?;Research has shown that one of a ketogenic diets benefits is in controlling blood sugar spiking and reducing insulin as well. But too little insulin can also impact the livers ability to make T3 out of T4. So the question then becomes is that really a problem, or is it a physiological adaptation that your body just needs to adjust to? This lowered T3 is seen in calorie restricted diets as well.To me, if TSH level doesnt increase and a woman continues to feel well , thats the more important measure. In my Magic Menopause program weve seen the TSH levels go down to optimal ranges. In many cases weve seen T3 increase as well.;The anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar balancing, adrenal supporting, and other hormone balancing and liver detox benefits of my Keto-Green program have outweighed any potential impacts;relating to ketos effects of lowering T3 levels. This even happened to me. You just need to monitor your overall thyroid levels which you should be doing in any case.

Our take?; Eliminating gluten can be alone very supportive of thyroid health.

Ketogenic Diet And Hashimotos

It can be difficult to determine how to use a ketogenic diet for Hashimotos because most studies focus on how keto diets can affect appetite and weight loss, as well as specific conditions such as type 2 diabetes, rather than the impact on thyroid function.

One important thing to mention is that traditional ketogenic diets use copious amounts of dairy for the fat component, , and we know that dairy can be a trigger for Hashimotos. The use of MCT or coconut oil for a fat source, may be more of a thyroid friendly approach.

Some studies that have looked at the impact of low-carbohydrate diets on T3 and T4 thyroid hormones, as well as thyroid antibodies, show mixed results.

If we determine that her daily needs are roughly 2000 calories per day, 30% of calories from carbs is 600 calories. As there are 4 calories in a gram of carbohydrate, this works out to be 150 grams of carbs per day.

Usually I give my clients a target range to hit depending on their activity levels, and we use these targets to re-evaluate their food diaries and see if theyre hitting their goals. Most of my clients are surprised to learn how much carb-rich Paleo foods they have to eat to get up to 150-200 grams per day! But once they start making a real effort to hit those targets, the health benefits are immediate.

Its More Sustainable And Less Diet

There are a few exceptions to the;low carb dieting where I believe that it can be beneficial for a short period of time, such as:

  • Correcting blood sugar regulation
  • Gut healing protocol like GAPS or a candida management protocol

However, the keyword here is short time period.

Thyroid disease is indeed manageable and plenty of people have put their Hashimotos into remission, the lifestyle that promotes that healing is for life. To support long term healing, its crucial to build a healing plan that can sustain you for life. Low-carb dieting;can easily turn into just another diet that is not as easily sustainable for long term.;

This varies from person to person, but generally speaking, low-carb is less sustainable than a balanced diet.;

Low Carb Diets Are Stressful On The Body And The Adrenals

Adrenal fatigue, stress, and exhaustion can often go hand and hand with thyroid disease as it all relates to poorly managed stress and hormone production. Though adrenal fatigue is mostly caused and healed by lifestyle factors, carb intake is a huge factor.;

Seeing as carbs are needed for energy and hormone conversions in the body, a lack of carbs is inherently stressful. It tires the body out, and doesnt allow the adrenals to heal or the body to be at homeostasis.;
