What Is Thyroid Cancer

Soy Harms the Thyroid and Can Cause Weight Gain

Thyroid cancer describes any cancer that originates in the thyroid. There are several types, and they can be differentiated or undifferentiated. A differentiated cancer is one in which the cells still look healthy, while the undifferentiated disease has abnormal cells. Differentiated cancers are fortunately much more common, as the undifferentiated or anaplastic tumors are both aggressive and hard to treat. Only about two percent of patients are diagnosed with an undifferentiated cancer of the thyroid.

The most common type of thyroid cancer is papillary cancer, which is also called papillary adenocarcinoma or papillary carcinoma. About eighty percent of patients have papillary cancer, which develops slowly and usually affects only one lobe of the thyroid gland. While papillary cancers often spread to the lymph nodes in the neck, they are relatively easy to treat. If caught in time, papillary cancer is rarely lethal.

Follicular cancer is the second-most common type, and it affects about ten percent of patients with cancer of the thyroid. It is more common in places where the local diet is typically deficient in iodine.

Medullary thyroid cancer develops in the thyroid glands C cells. It affects about four percent of patients. MTC can be sporadic or familial the latter runs in families and can affect children. Sporadic MTC affects about 80 percent of MTC patients. MTC is more difficult to detect and treat than some of the other types.

Address Root Causes Of Your Stress

  • Seek counseling: if you need to help heal from unresolved trauma or need support for depression.
  • Reduce lifes daily stressors: These can add up to big adrenal impacts if they continue day after day. That might mean you get up just 15 minutes earlier so you dont have to rush and have time for breakfast. Or it might mean that you try pull back your mortgage payments so you have more money to get through the week.

A while ago, a woman from our Hormones Balance community contacted me for help with stabilizing her hormones. When she wasnt improving we tried to identify hidden stresses that may be standing in the way of her hormonal balance. She identified that she was suffering stress every morning when she had to walk through an area where she didnt feel safe on her way to work. Once she took a different route, even though it took her a little longer, her stress levels significantly reduced and her hormonal health substantially improved. Its a potent reminder of just how much we are hardwired for survival and as a result, how big even seemingly small stressors can be.

  • Address relationship problems and potential abuse: Make time for more intimacy and improved communication with your partner. If youre not in a good place together, read some self-help books together or attend couples counseling. I did a call about abusive relationships , watch it here.

Heres What Happens To Your Body When Your Thyroid Is Imbalanced

Thyroid disease is a common condition, affecting an estimated 20 million Americans. Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck that produces hormones vital for bodily functions like metabolism and heart rate.

This disease occurs when your thyroid makes too little or too much of the hormones. Hypothyroidism is the term for too little production of the hormones, while hyperthyroidism develops when your thyroid makes too much.

Thyroid imbalance affects more women than men, with nearly 1 in 8 women experiencing thyroid disease at some point in her life. The condition comes with a variety of symptoms, from weight fluctuation and fatigue to menstrual irregularity and more.

For comprehensive thyroid care, come to Terry Baker, MD, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Dr. Baker is an expert in thyroid conditions, and our team is here to help you understand thyroid imbalance and how its affecting your body.

Do Thyroid Nodules Cause Symptoms

Most thyroid nodules are actually asymptomatic , which means that they do NOT cause symptoms.

The majority of these nodules are often found by accident, usually during a routine physical exam where your Doctor may feel or palpate your neck/thyroid gland.

Occasionally, however, patients may experience changes to thyroid function which prompts a visit to the Doctor.

Those patients who experience symptoms can either experience the symptoms of too much thyroid hormone or the symptoms associated with too little thyroid hormone.

The way that you present largely depends on the size of your nodule, co-existing medical conditions, your personal history and so forth.

You can use the guide below to help determine if you may be experiencing symptoms related to your thyroid nodule.

Symptoms you may experience if your nodule produces thyroid hormone:

These nodules can produce thyroid hormone outside of the normal regulatory loops that exist in your body.

These nodules are often considered “hot” or active and patients who have these nodules may experience the symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism.

Symptoms such as:

These symptoms are usually the result of DECREASED thyroid hormone production which may be secondary to a thyroid nodule or the result of some OTHER cause.

If you are suffering from these symptoms be sure to check your thyroid lab tests in addition to a thyroid ultrasound .

Symptoms you may experience if your nodule is large or cancerous:

Symptoms Of Adrenal Fatigue

Traditional allopathic Western medicine doesnt recognize adrenal fatigue, even though the changes it can cause are now starting to be confirmed by science. Referring to it as exhaustion syndrome research from UmeƄ University in Sweden has found that people suffering adrenal fatigue have lower activity in their frontal lobes and also altered regulation of cortisol.

The study also found that people more prone to this condition are often over-achievers and perfectionists. This is not news to functional and integrative practitioners who see women suffering from this problem every day. They arrive feeling absolutely at the end of the line and suffering from these kinds of chronic complaints:

Additional Steps To Improving Weight Management

After going on a treatment plan to assist with managing a condition such as Hypothyroidism, it is only natural to think that the increase in Thyroid hormones will make weight loss happen automatically.

Unfortunately, this is a misconception that many people have once they opt for synthetic Thyroid hormones in order to assist with the management of Hypothyroidism. Even though levels of Thyroid hormones are restored to normal through such a treatment plan, it is vital for a person to take into consideration that weight loss will now only be easier for them it will not magically happen.

Weight loss efforts still need to be exerted by the individual who is obtaining the treatment. The primary method of losing weight after restoring normal Thyroid hormone levels would be to start following a caloric deficit diet.

This, in basic terms, means that you will have to eat fewer calories daily than you exert. There is no need to starve yourself, however, as you need to start participating in exercises, which means your daily caloric requirements will be going up.

It is highly advisable to participate in a healthy amount of exercise on a regular basis. This will not only promote weight loss but will also assist with further alleviating the problems that Hypothyroidism has caused.

Once your daily caloric expenditure has increased through these exercise plans, it is time to look at what you consume.

Additionally, eliminating processed foods from your diet can be very beneficial for you.

Thyroid nodules are most commonly found when a doctor examines a patient’s neck, feeling the thyroid gland. Sometimes thyroid nodules are found when a patient gets x-rays or scans of the neck for some other reason. Sometimes it is a screening x-ray or scan for carotid arteries or neck pain that shows nodules in the thyroid. Thyroid nodules that are large, develop in women with thin necks, or are present in the middle portion of the thyroid gland may be visible and discovered as a lump in the neck.

When Treatment Isnt Necessary

Sometimes when a child is tested for hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, the thyroid function test will come back normal, but the child can test positive for thyroid antibodies. That means the child has an increased risk of developing a thyroid disorder, but it doesnt necessarily mean the child will develop a thyroid problem. If thyroid levels are normal, even if thyroid antibodies are present, the child does not need to be treated.

What Causes Thyroid Nodules

Thyroid Misdiagnosis

Doctors arent always sure why some people get thyroid nodules, but theyre very common. The chances of getting one increase as you get older. Almost 50% of adults will develop thyroid nodules by the time theyre 60 years old.

The nodules are sometimes associated with other medical conditions, including:

What About Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer is uncommon and is among the least deadly. The main symptom is a lump or swelling in the neck, and only about 5% of thyroid nodules turn out to be cancerous. When thyroid cancer is diagnosed, it is most often treated with surgery followed by radioactive iodine therapy or, in some cases, external radiation therapy.

Causes Of Thyroid Nodules

Thyroid nodules, masses in the thyroid gland, can be the result of benign cell overgrowth or actual discrete tumors comprised of thyroid cells that can be benign or cancerous. Thyroid nodules can sometimes contain fluid, which usually collects due to bleeding from the fragile blood vessels in thyroid tumors, so called cystic degeneration. This event sometimes causes the sudden onset of pain and swelling in the front of the neck, which typically subsides over several days.

Fortunately, more than 90% of thyroid nodules are not cancers, but malignancy should be considered in every affected person. Often patients with small thyroid nodules, less than 1 cm in diameter, and no risk factors for thyroid cancer can simply be reexamined or imaged by sonography to be sure the nodule is not enlarging. For larger nodules, additional studies are usually indicated, as described below.

Finding Your Thyroid Gland

Your thyroid is at the lower end of the front of your neck, right above your collarbone and below your larynx. The larynx or voice box is a hollow structure connected to your windpipe.

To find your thyroid, slide your fingers midway down the front of your neck, starting from your chin. The first hard spot you touch is thyroid cartilage, which leads to your Adams apple this area is often more prominent in men than women.

The next hard area in your neck is more cartilage, or the cricoid ring encircling your windpipe. Now, two finger-widths lower is your thyroid isthmus, which connects each side of your butterfly-shaped thyroid gland.

You can develop thyroid nodules for several reasons, including having:

  • An enlarged thyroid gland
  • Insomnia
  • Increased sweating

You might also feel a lump at the base of your throat when you have a thyroid nodule. These abnormalities usually feel round, and they may move when you swallow. They can also move at the touch of your fingertips.

Thyroid Nodules: Potential Causes

Graves Thyroid Weight Gain Causes

Several conditions may cause or predispose to the development of thyroid nodules including:

Iodine deficiency

Diets deficient in iodine can predispose individuals for the development of thyroid nodules. Portions of the world continue to lack iodine in their diets however in the United States, the presence of iodine in our daily diets makes this an unlikely cause for thyroid nodules.

Overgrowth of normal thyroid tissue

The reason why these thyroid nodules occur is not well understood. These thyroid nodules are commonly called follicular adenomas or thyroid adenomas. . Follicular adenomas are clearly not cancerous and are not worrisome and do not require removal except if they are symptomatic due to their size. The rare follicular adenoma or thyroid adenoma will overproduce thyroid hormone and be the cause of hyperthyroidism. For some reason these excessive thyroid hormone producing adenomas lose their ability to be regulated by the pituitary glands production of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone .

Thyroid cysts

Thyroid cysts are fluid filled cavities caused by degenerating thyroid adenomas, congenital cysts, or overproduction of a fluid produced by the thyroid called colloid.

Inflammatory diseases of the thyroid Multinodular disease of the thyroid Thyroid Cancer

Although the likelihood that a thyroid nodule is a cancer is quite low, the following are associated with an increased malignant risk:

The Thyroid/weight Gain Connection

Hypothyroidism has long been associated with weight gain , but the exact biochemical cause of this link is not completely clear. That said, there are several mechanisms that may explain the connection in cases of low thyroid function.

The two most active thyroid hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine , circulate in the body, and they affect your metabolism through their interaction with your:

  • Fat cells
  • Pancreas
  • Hypothalamus

Thyroid hormones normally help the body break down fat, and they help the liver and pancreas function to metabolize stored calories to be used for energy. These hormones also help the muscles throughout the body as they use energy. And when there is an adequate amount of thyroid hormones circulating in the body, the hypothalamus, which is a regulator of thyroid hormone in the brain, decreases the amount of thyrotropin regulating hormone secretion.

Treatment with thyroid replacement medications does not necessarily induce weight loss, even when optimal thyroid hormone levels are measured on blood tests.

How Thyroid Disorders Can Lead To Weight Gain

Weight loss is a journey that is considerably harder than weight gain.

This is a fact that all obese individuals already know. There are many reasons why a person may find it more difficult to lose weight than to gain weight.

Think about the fact that sweets, pastries, take-outs and many other of the unhealthiest foods on the planet are often considered more delicious and flavorful than some of the healthy options out there.

If you were to be presented with two plates once containing a number of vegetables, and the other one a pizza or burger, which would you rather choose.

For many people, the answer would be the second choice, but this can contribute to weight gain.

While cravings and the consumption of too many unhealthy foods are certainly the most important reasons why we are facing a public health epidemic, with over 36.5% of the American population obese and the majority of the population weighing more than their recommended weight1.

The consumption of unhealthy foods are not the only problems contributing to weight gain.

In this post, we would like to focus on how disorders affecting your Thyroid can be a particular issue leading to your difficult journey in weight loss, and even cause you to gain further weight unintentionally in some cases.

I Cant Think Straight Im Foggy

Blame it on: High cortisol and its effect on the hippocampus.

Ever noticed how hard it is to keep your mind operating on all four cylinders when youre having a heavy-duty day? You sit at the computer but cant focus, go to the shops but forget what you need to buy, misplace your keys or wallet or both. This mental meltdown is a direct result of adrenal fatigue.

Stress induced brain drain is caused by the hippocampus, a little seahorse shaped organ in the brain involved in our short term memory. With too much cortisol in the brain, dendrites start to shrink and dont work as properly.
