What Are The Side Effects Of Levothyroxine Sodium

Thyroid Medication Tips

Reported side effects of levothyroxine sodium include:

  • Not eating
  • Skin problems, such as red, inflamed skin
  • Increased drinking and urination and
  • Increased activity level.

FDA encourages you to call your veterinarian if you think your dog is having a side effect from levothyroxine sodium. A side effect associated with a drug is called an adverse event. Adverse events also include a lack of effectiveness and reactions in people who handle the drug. Call your healthcare provider if you have a reaction to levothyroxine sodium.

FDA also encourages you to work with your veterinarian to report any adverse event – in either pets or people – associated with levothyroxine sodium or any product defect such as defective packaging or the drug is off-color. How to Report Animal Drug and Device Side Effects and Product Problems.

Remember to keep the drug in a secure location out of reach of children, dogs, cats, and other animals to prevent accidental ingestion or overdose.

Sometimes, a condition called thyrotoxicosis may develop dogs receiving levothyroxine sodium if:

  • The dose is too high
  • The dog has an underlying illness that affects the bodys ability to break down the drug or
  • The dog is very sensitive to the drug.

Signs of thyrotoxicosis include panting, nervousness, hyperactivity, a rapid pulse, increased drinking and urination, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss despite having an increased appetite. Call your veterinarian if you see these signs in your dog.

If You Forget To Take It

If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to.

Otherwise, take your dose as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking it as you would normally.

Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you missed.

If you are unsure about whether to take your next dose, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

If you have trouble remembering when to take your medicine, ask your pharmacist for some hints.

What Are The Signs Of Hypothyroidism In Dogs

Because thyroid hormones affect virtually every cell in the body, its not surprising that dogs with hypothyroidism show signs in multiple body systems. The destruction of the thyroid gland usually progresses slowly, so signs are often gradual and easy to miss at first. Common findings in dogs with hypothyroidism include:

  • Hair loss or thinning of the furthis occurs mainly over the dogs trunk, sparing the head and legs. Often, the hair loss starts on the tail leading to a rat tail appearance. A bald area around the collar is also common. The skin is usually not itchy or red unless theres also a skin infection
  • Skin infectionthe skin is often scaly and smelly due to an excessively oily coat
  • Dull, dry hair coatthe outer hairs can be brittle and break easily, leaving a short, softer undercoat sometimes described as a puppy-like coat
  • Skin thickening and darkeningthis occurs especially in areas of friction, such as the armpit or groin. Often, the skin around the face and head thickens, leading to more skin folds
  • Ear infectionthe ears may be red, painful, and smelly
  • Weight gain
  • A heart medication called propranolol
  • A behavior medication called clomipramine and
  • The sulfa class of antibiotics.

Sighthounds, such as Greyhounds, Irish Wolfhounds, and Whippets, normally have much lower thyroid hormone levels than other breeds.

Levothyroxine is the most common prescription used to treat hypothyroidism. This medication is also known by several brand names, including:

Whether your healthcare provider prescribes the generic or brand name, these medications help to replace the thyroid hormone your body isnt naturally producing in your blood.

It may take some time to find the right medication, or dosage that works for youand once youve figured out your treatment plan, certain things can mess with how the prescription works for you.

What Special Dietary Instructions Should I Follow

Is Night or Day the Time to Take Thyroid Medication?

Some foods and beverages, particularly those that contain soybeans, walnuts, and dietary fiber, may affect how levothyroxine works for you. Talk to your doctor before eating or drinking these foods.

Medical Conditions That Affect Absorption

There are a number of medical conditions that may affect the absorption of thyroid medications, and, hence, the effectiveness of a particular dose. Some of these include:

  • Lactose intolerance
  • Pancreatic diseases
  • Liver disease

Gene differences may also result in decreased effectiveness in some people, such as those who have polymorphisms in iodothyronine deiodinase 2.

For people with health conditions that affect digestion such as inflammatory bowel disease , or celiac disease, the Tirosint brand of levothyroxine with fewer ingredients that may be better tolerated. In addition, the liquid or gel cap form of levothyroxine may be better absorbed than levothyroxine pills.

If you have any of these conditions, it will be important to have your thyroid tested regularly.

Dairy Products And Tyramine

Quinolone Antibacterials Examples: Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, MoxifloxacinTetracycline Antibacterials Examples: Doxycycline, Minocycline, TetracyclineOxazolidinone Antibacterials Example: LinezolidMetronidazole Antibacterials Example: Metronidazole

Antibacterial medications, also called antibiotics, are used in the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections. Some antibiotics, like tetracycline and ciprofloxacin, have certain restrictions on being taken with dairy products like milk, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt. This is because the calcium in these products decreases absorption of the medication making it less effective. Your doctor may recommend that you avoid consuming dairy products and calcium-fortified juices up to two hours or more before or after you take your medication.

Linezolid is another medication that should not be taken with foods containing tyramine. This antibiotic can cause an elevation in blood pressure. Because tyramine can also raise blood pressure it is important to limit tyramine-rich foods and drinks. See above for Tyramine-containing foods to avoid.

Considerations Relating To Ppis And Other Acid Blockers

With clients and readers, and in my research, I have consistently found medications and supplements that suppress stomach acid may cause impaired absorption of thyroid hormones, and that includes the above proton pump inhibitors, as well as antacids, calcium, magnesium-aluminum and iron. For that reason, I always recommend spacing out calcium, iron and magnesium supplements by at least 4 hours from thyroid medications.

I also recommend a careful re-evaluation of the use of acid-suppressing medications in everyone with Hashimotos and hypothyroidism. I suggest looking for the actual trigger for the acid reflux symptoms, which is often a food sensitivity or infection. Its especially important to look at common food sensitivities such as dairy and gluten to see if that resolves the acid problem. If not, I have found the Alletess IgG Food Sensitivity Test to be highly reliable for identifying acid reflux inducing foods. One can test for H-pylori which can also cause acid reflux symptoms and be a hidden trigger for you.

Low stomach acid, again, is common in people having Hashimotos. Plus, having low or no stomach acid puts people at a greater risk for many health issues such as contracting parasites from our food, developing food sensitivities, developing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth , and developing nutrient depletions.

Betaine with Pepsin can also be helpful to re-acidify gastric pH.

How To Lower The Risk Of Antibiotics Side Effects

When should you take your thyroid medication

Even though antibiotics can be pretty powerful and able to destroy bad bacteria that make you sick, these drugs can have a negative impact on our health. As mentioned above, they can harm the thyroid, induce various side effects, and impair gut health. But its possible to lower the risk of these adverse reactions. Below you can see a few useful suggestions:

  • Take antibiotics exactly as directed although this seems like a no-brainer, many people tend to adjust dosages and intake of antibiotics as they see fit. Listen to doctors orders, especially if youre also taking thyroid medications.
  • Finish the course of treatment a common mistake that people make is that they stop taking antibiotics as soon as they feel better. This increases the risk of re-infection, after which you may need to take antibiotics again, all of which can harm your gut and thyroid.
  • Avoid alcohol both alcohol and antibiotic medications may induce similar side effects, which worsen when you take them together.
  • Take probiotics one way to protect gut health when taking antibiotics is to get probiotics i.e., healthy bacteria, which will promote the balance of gut microbiota. Always keep in mind that a healthy gut equals a healthy thyroid gland.
  • Consult your doctor dont be afraid to talk to your doctor, express your concerns, and ask whether its possible to take alternatives that could do the same job but without a negative impact on your thyroid.

Is Taking Medication During Intermittent Fasting Safe

Taking medications on an empty stomach can be both good and bad. Again, the answer depends on the medication itself. The first thing you need to do is check the leaflet for any indications as to how the medicine needs to be taken. If youre advised to take medication with food, then do not take it while intermittent fasting.

If youre advised to take it before a meal, you have two options. You can either take it just before you break your fast, to be sure youre eating immediately after. Or you can take it while youre fasting, even if the first meal is a few hours away. If nothing is mentioned on the leaflet regarding when to take it, its safe to assume you can take it on an empty stomach.

Now, because not all medications come with clear instructions about this issue, here are a few more things you need to take into account, as well as medications that are generally safe to take while fasting, and unsafe, respectively.

S To Avoid Negative Antibiotic Impact On Your Thyroid

1. Use antibiotics responsibly. They are designed to fight infections and are absolutely useless for a common cold and flu.

2. Check if antibiotics contain fluoride as one of ingredients and are on the list of fluoroquinolones or quinolones family that is well-known to reduce absorption of thyroid medication.

Thequinolonesinclude the following antibiotics: Ciprofloxacin, Cipro, Ciloxan eye drops, Levofloxacin, Levaquin, Quixin, Moxifloxacin, Avelox, Vigamox eye drops, Norfloxacin, Noroxin, Ofloxacin, Ocuflox, Floxin, Floxin Otic, Floxacin, Trovafloxacin, Trovan and alatrofloxacin.

3. Ask for a less aggressive type of antibiotics that cause less damage to your intestinal walls.

4. Repair your gut damage and restore flora after antibiotic use.

Doctors prescribe antibiotics but they fail to take measures to repair damage that these drugs cause to your gut flora. As a result, the gut flora of most patients treated with antibiotics never fully recover.

Constipation, indigestionand bloating are very common symptoms of severe dysbiosis and a weak immune system that is unable to fight infections. Unfortunately, probiotics alone are only bandaids and do not fully replenish the gut flora with all good bacteria. It is important not only to re-populate the intestines with beneficial bacteria but also restore the variety of species.

5. Watch for antibiotics in your food, especially animal products like dairy, eggs, fish and meats.

7. Consider a natural alternative to antibiotics.

Thyroid Supplements And Thyroid Medication

What are the Symptoms of Not Taking Thyroid Medication?

Some supplements are specifically marketed to those who have thyroid conditions. Of course, if your doctor directs you to take thyroid supplements as part of your medical regimen, then it is considered a safe component of your health and lifestyle.

However, taking thyroid supplements without the recommendation of your doctor can create several problems. One of the most significant drawbacks of thyroid supplements is that they may contain hormones that can interfere with your thyroid and medication.

You wouldnt know if these supplements have hormones from the label, but a2013 studydiscovered nine out of ten supplements marketed for those concerned about thyroid health actually contained synthetic and bovine hormones. These were hormones that do not naturally occur in plant-based ingredients, which means they would have been intentionally added to the supplement.

Because there is no way to measure the hormones contained in these supplements, and thyroid management requires precise and predictable hormone levels, it is not recommended that you take thyroid supplements without the explicit direction of your doctor.

Diabetes Medications Can Be Dangerous Monitor Closely

When you fast, your blood sugar gradually comes down, naturally. It may go even lower than youd normally expect and thats typically fine, because your brain is now running on ketones instead of just sugar.

But if you take meds that FORCE your blood sugar even lower, that could be dangerous, even life-threatening.

The bottom line?

If youre on any diabetes medications that lower your blood sugar, you need to work with your medical provider to adjust the dose when you fast.

With that in mind, lets explore some specific diabetes meds.

/13people With Comorbidities Need To Be Vaccinated At The Earliest

Coronavirus can make a beeline for someone with frail immunity, which is a crucial reason why those with comorbidities should be inoculated at once.

Even with research and studies underway, taking a jab may do more harm than good.

According to Dr Rahul Pandit, Director-Critical Care, Fortis Hospitals Mumbai & Member-Maharashtras COVID Taskforce, prioritized, fast vaccination is the key right now to slowing the COVID mortality rate. “The high-risk vulnerable population – above 60 years and above 45 years with co-morbidities will bring down the mortality rate to very low, as currently, this group forms almost 90% of patients who succumb to the disease.”

Side Effects Of Antibiotics

Negative reactions to antibiotics arent uncommon. For instance, figures show that one in 15 people experience an allergic reaction to antibiotic medications. Side effects are also common, affecting one in 10 patients, and although people may experience them differently, the most common adverse reactions are:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Intense stomach pain and cramping

Even though they are designed to kill bad bacteria, sometimes the antibiotics can do the opposite and destroy good bacteria as well. Thats why many people who take antibiotics develop fungal infections in their mouth, throat, or vagina.

Some antibiotics can also induce photosensitivity and stain your teeth.

Starting Or Stopping Other Medication Without Talking To Your Doctor

Can you stop taking thyroid medication once you start? The answer is maybe

Some medication will affect the way your thyroid hormone is absorbed, including birth control pills, estrogen, testosterone, seizure drugs, and some depression medication, according to the American Thyroid Association . That doesnt mean you cant take these other drugs but if you do, make sure your doctor is aware. It will likely just take some trial and error to find the effective dose of thyroid hormone youll need as a result, Bianco says. Likewise, any time you stop taking these drugs or make any changes, your thyroid hormone dose may need to be adjusted, and you should see your healthcare provider then, too.

Are There Concerns About Unapproved Levothyroxine Products For Dogs

FDA has serious concerns about unapproved animal drugs, including unapproved levothyroxine sodium products for dogs. Unapproved animal drugs have not been reviewed by FDA and may not meet the agencys strict standards for safety and effectiveness. They also may not be properly manufactured or properly labeled. FDA advises veterinarians and dog owners to avoid using unapproved levothyroxine products.

Prescription Drug & Food Interactions To Avoid

Some medications just dont mix with certain foods . Bananas, milk, kale, grapefruit juice, walnuts, bacon, black licorice, chocolate, and mozzarella can be delicious treats on their own, but when combined with certain prescription drugs, they can cause new side effects, worsen existing side effects, affect how your medications work, and even change the way your body uses food. Combining medications with alcohol or caffeine can have unwanted consequences and should typically be avoided. Of course, always consult your doctor and pharmacist about prescription drug information and instructions. If you or a member of your family is taking prescription drugs to lower blood pressure, treat heart failure, Parkinsons disease, depression, or osteoporosis, it is important to be informed about food-drug interactions and which foods to avoid when taking certain medications.

/13when Should You Alert A Vaccination Provider

Doctors and health bodies recommend vaccination for everyone right now facing critical danger from COVID. However, alerting your vaccinator about your condition beforehand can help them better deal with any reactions or side-effects which may happen.

Get the vaccine when you can. As a rule, inform your vaccinator if you suffer from any of these conditions:

-Have any allergies.

Considerations For Taking Iodine

Are You Taking Too Much Thyroid Medication

Iodine is a complicated topic, so please refer to an earlier article I wrote, which was focused on iodine. This article includes more research information, as well as the results of my Root Cause Rebels survey on using iodine versus using selenium. Find out which intervention had the greatest effect. You might be surprised!

To summarize although iodine serves as fuel for our thyroid and is very important in iodine deficiency induced hypothyroidism, Hashimotos is a different mechanism.

Adding iodine is like pouring gas into an engine thats on fire thats essentially whats happening in Hashimotos. Adding iodine to the mix before putting out the fire and fixing the engine may result in further damage to the thyroid. In those with a predisposition to autoimmunity, this has been documented time and time again, in both animal and human studies. My approach is, lets fix the engine first , and then add the fuel once we know that the engine is no longer on fire. Please read the article linked above and also check out my book, Hashimotos: Root Cause. I have an entire chapter on the iodine controversy that references numerous studies.
