How To Shrink A Goiter

How to SHRINK Thyroid Nodules, Thyroid Cysts and Thyroid Goiters Naturally

Seinfeld did an entire episode about it, and comedians make fun of it. Still, there’s no question that goiter is no joke for sufferers. “Goiter” is the medical term for abnormal enlargement of your thyroid gland, and it’s more common than you think.

What causes a goiter, and how do you shrink it, or better yet, get rid of it entirely? Let’s take a look.

Find inspiration for a healthy way to support your thyroid

What causes your thyroid gland to become enlarged? There are several common causes.

Iodine deficiency

Iodine deficiency is one of the most common causes of a goiter. Iodine is a critical ingredient in your gland’s manufacture of thyroid hormone. When you are low in iodine intake, your thyroid needs to enlarge to produce enough essential thyroid hormone. A goiter that’s due to lack of iodine is known as a colloid goiter.

Iodine excess

Iodine excess is a less common cause of goiter. Still, in some cases, excessive intake of or exposure to iodine can trigger thyroid enlargement.

Autoimmune thyroid disease

Both Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease — the two autoimmune conditions that affect the thyroid gland — can cause an enlargement in the thyroid gland.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy can sometimes trigger a goiter because a woman’s thyroid produces extra thyroid hormone for her developing baby.

Estrogen dominance

Temporary thyroiditis

Benign or cancerous thyroid nodules

Medications

Natural Remedies For Hypothyroidism

The standard treatment for hypothyroidism is taking daily thyroid hormone replacement medication. Of course, medications often come with side effects, and forgetting to take a pill might lead to more symptoms.

In some cases, natural remedies may cause fewer side effects and fit into your overall lifestyle better.

The goal of natural remedies or alternative medicine is to fix the root cause of the thyroid problem. Thyroid problems sometimes start as the result of:

Changing your diet and taking an herbal supplement are two ways you can help your thyroid condition. These options may have fewer side effects than taking thyroid medication.

Also, taking an herbal supplement to help address a low or underactive thyroid may be helpful for people who arent responding well to medications.

Consider the following five natural remedies as additions or alternatives to your treatment plan.

, selenium is a trace element that plays a part in thyroid hormone metabolism.

Many foods contain selenium, including:

  • tuna
  • Brazil nuts
  • grass-fed beef

Hashimotos thyroiditis, an immune system attack on the thyroid, often reduces the bodys selenium supply. Supplementing this trace element has shown to help balance thyroxine, or T4, levels in some people.

Its important to talk with your doctor about how much selenium may be right for you since every person is different.

Tip #: Continue To Follow

Your doctor will help you create a follow-up plan to monitor changes in your thyroid nodules. Depending on the size, location or potential issues associated with your thyroid nodules, your doctor may recommend anything from following up in several months to surgery.

Regardless of what your doctor recommends, make sure to keep a close eye on how and if your nodules change. We recommend taking regular measurements of visible nodules by using this tape measure. Make sure to measure several locations on the nodule to track the border and shape.

Breakthrough Treatment Option For Thyroid Nodules

Thyroid nodules occur in about 15% of the general population. Most of these nodules are benign but can still grow and give troublesome symptoms. Some large nodules compress the esophagus and cause trouble swallowing. Others can become an unsightly lump in the low, middle part of the neck. Some can even push on the airway and give people shortness of breath, especially when lying down.

Up until now, the only treatment option for these bothersome nodules was surgical removal. If the nodule was on just one side, then a hemi-thyroidectomy or lobectomy could remove that half of the thyroid. If there were troublesome nodules on both sides, then a complete removal of the thyroid was needed. Today, Advanced ENT & Allergy is now offering a great alternative to surgery. This new procedure can shrink thyroid nodules without harming or removing normal thyroid tissue around it. The procedure is called radio frequency ablation, abbreviated RFA.

What Is Radiofrequency Ablation

How can you shrink thyroid nodules ...

Radiofrequency ablation is a technique using an electrode with high frequency alternating current to cause thermal injury in soft tissue leading to cell death and shrinking of the affected part.

RFA technology has been widely used for a range of conditions, including nerve pain, certain types of cancer, uterine fibroids, and some vascular conditions. This technology was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be used for benign thyroid nodules in 2018.

Combining Natural Therapies With Conventional Therapies

I spent the majority of this article discussing natural therapies but I also think its important to at least discuss conventional therapies as well.

The reason this is important is that I find that many patients find the best results when they combine conventional medicine with that of natural and alternative therapies.

But what exactly do I mean by conventional thyroid therapies?

Perhaps the primary treatment is the use of prescription thyroid medication.

Prescription thyroid medications are used to provide your body with thyroid hormone directly .

Thyroid medications are very powerful and provide your body with exactly what it is missing.

The good news is that you can often use natural therapies AND thyroid medication at the same time.

Using this strategy may allow you to reduce the amount of thyroid medication that you need by helping your thyroid function naturally.

Indeed, many of the studies Ive listed above have shown just that! A decrease in demand for thyroid medication as people improve their diet and add in exercise.

Its also important to understand that even though you may want to only undergo natural therapies that may not be possible for all people.

For instance:

What if you have had your thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer? Or what if youve had your thyroid ablated because of Graves disease?

These are two situations in which you will be reliant upon thyroid medication for the rest of your life.

Best Diet For Thyroid Nodules

In order to get rid of thyroid nodules in a natural way for good, you really need to take good care of your diet and habits. There is not one natural remedy out there that can guarantee complete recovery if you dont adjust your diet in your favor.

Shrinking The Thyroid Gland

Shrinking the thyroid gland involves promoting the release of thyroid hormone from your thyroid gland slowly.

This can be done through a few ways, including:

The most effective way to shrink a goiter is through the use of progesterone.

Just as estrogen blocks your thyroid gland from releasing thyroid hormone, progesterone does the opposite it activates the proteolytic enzymes that release the thyroid hormone.

Ordinarily, this is a very good thing, because we want to promote the thyroid gland to release thyroid hormone properly.

Yet, we have to be careful when the thyroid gland is enlarged or theres a goiter or soft nodules.

This is because the progesterone can activate your thyroid gland to unload too much thyroid hormone at one time, which can give you hyperthyroid symptoms and make you feel very uncomfortable.

That uncomfortable feeling is not something we want for our clients to experience.

So, we often do a trial of progesterone while looking for signs of increased heart rate, heart palpitations, anxiety, etc.

If these symptoms are experienced, then its best to focus on Vitamin E and metabolism first and re-introducing the progesterone later, because it still plays an essential part in fixing the underlying cause of the problem.

Vitamin E is anti-estrogenic and can be used to reduce estrogens thyroid-blocking effects without unloading the thyroid gland too quickly.

What Steps Can I Take To Treat Thyroid Nodules

How to Shrink Thyroid Nodules

So, what do you do if you have a thyroid nodule and need a natural cure for thyroid nodules? Well, that depends entirely on the state of your nodule again. Here is my opportunity to advocate for ultrasounds. There are some things you can consider should the need arise.

Do you need to have a biopsy? Well, that relies on multiple factors, such as:

  • Your nodule is well over 1 centimeter in size
  • If your nodule has calcified
  • If your nodule has exaggerated blood vessels

At this point, considering all of these factors, you may want to have your nodule biopsied. This is only because the nodule, at this point, looks suspicious for developing into cancer.

Key Insight: This is a pretty important collection of conditions for any thyroid nodule to be considered for a biopsy. Keep that in mind, and that typically you need to have some sort of combination of these three to require surgery of any kind.

If you have a nodule that is biopsied, the next consideration is removal. How do you know when to remove, though? Consider if:

  • You have had an abnormal biopsy
  • The nodules are growing quite quickly
  • There are abnormal lymph nodes nearby
  • The nodule is putting pressure on vessels or nerves
  • We see high levels of thyroglobulin

All of these factors could play a role in deciding whether or not the nodule, or portions of the thyroid, need to be removed.

How Do You Reduce Nodules Naturally

So, apart from all of this sharp, scary stuff, what can we do to deal with thyroid nodules in a natural way?

Is there anything we can do? There is! The two biggest factors that play a role in handling thyroid nodules are:

  • Dialing in your TSH
  • Dialing in your iodine2
  • Reverse insulin resistance

When it comes to your TSH, lets think about the normal/optimal range. What we have is a very broad normal range, and a very slim optimal range.

What we want to do, when it comes to nodules, is get even narrower .

What Causes Thyroid Goiters And Thyroid Nodules

The most common cause of goiters and soft nodules today is the hormone estrogen.

In hypothyroidism, excess estrogen accumulates in your body for two reasons:

  • Estrogen is overproduced through aromatization of androgens into estrogen.
  • Estrogen further builds up because it cant be properly detoxified due to blocking of the glucuronidation detox pathway.
  • As estrogen accumulates within your body, it tends to affect your thyroid gland in two ways:

  • Estrogen increases Thyroid Stimulating Hormone , which increases the amount of thyroid hormone the thyroid gland produces.
  • Estrogen inhibits the proteolytic enzymes that allow the thyroid gland to release that thyroid hormone.
  • Think of your thyroid gland like a balloon.

The effects of estrogen are such that air is being continuously added to the balloon , without any air being allowed to escape.

The balloon will just continue to get bigger and bigger.

The solution to the problem is to stop adding more air to the balloon while at the same time, letting air out, allowing the balloon to shrink and normalize in size.

    Tip #: See Your Doctor

If you notice any changes, lumps, bumps or strange swelling in your neck region, make an appointment with your doctor. Many people do not notice changes on themselves, however, family members or friends may notice a change in your appearance.

Instead of jumping straight to Google and worrying yourself, schedule an appointment to get checked by your doctor. Some lumps and bumps are benign and others are malignant. Dont be surprised if your doctor checks you for throat or neck cancers. This is often done as a precaution.

    What Causes A Goiter

Find Out More About How to Shrink Thyroid Nodules II (Video)

One of the most common causes of goiter formation worldwide is iodine deficiency. While this was a very frequent cause of goiter in the United States many years ago, it is no longer commonly observed. The primary activity of the thyroid gland is to concentrate iodine from the blood to make thyroid hormone. The gland cannot make enough thyroid hormone if it does not have enough iodine. Therefore, with iodine deficiency the individual will become hypothyroid. Consequently, the pituitary gland in the brain senses the thyroid hormone level is too low and sends a signal to the thyroid. This signal is called thyroid stimulating hormone . As the name implies, this hormone stimulates the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone and to grow in size. This abnormal growth in size produces what is termed a goiter. Thus, iodine deficiency is one cause of goiter development. Wherever iodine deficiency is common, goiter will be common. It remains a common cause of goiters in other parts of the world.

Hashimotos thyroiditis is a more common cause of goiter formation in the US. This is an autoimmune condition in which there is destruction of the thyroid gland by ones own immune system. As the gland becomes more damaged, it is less able to make adequate supplies of thyroid hormone. The pituitary gland senses a low thyroid hormone level and secretes more TSH to stimulate the thyroid. This stimulation causes the thyroid to grow, which may produce a goiter.

    What Causes Goiters

Goiters can happen due to inflammation of the thyroid gland or when the gland makes too much or too little thyroid hormone. A goiter also can develop with other thyroid problems, such as infections of the thyroid or thyroid cysts, tumors, or thyroid cancer. People who don’t get enough iodine in their diets also can get an enlarged thyroid. But this is rare in the United States because foods here usually supply enough iodine.

Kids can be born with a goiter or develop one later in life. A goiter that’s present at birth is called a congenital goiter. These can be caused by:

    • a genetic disease that prevents the baby from producing thyroid hormone properly
    • thyroid issues in the mother during pregnancy
    • an expectant mother taking medicines or other substances that affect the baby’s thyroid
    • the child being born without half of the thyroid, causing the remaining half to get bigger

A goiter that develops later is called an acquired goiter. In the United States, most acquired goiters are caused by:

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: The immune system attacks the thyroid, making it swell. Sometimes this swelling can be dramatic and even look like a growth. Over time, the thyroid can become so damaged that it can’t make enough thyroid hormone. In that case, a person might need to take a thyroid hormone.

Viral or bacterial infections: Infections can cause inflammation and enlargement of the thyroid. These goiters are often painful.

    Who Is A Candidate

Generally, any patient with a benign nodule who is a candidate for surgery could consider RFA. This includes patients with symptoms or cosmetic issues caused by a growing nodule, and those who have a toxic nodule . Patients who cannot safely have surgery, such as those who cannot go under anesthesia, may also consider this treatment.

    Benefits of RFA include:

    • No surgery, which means you get to keep your thyroid.
    • No need to take thyroid hormone supplements, since the thyroid a small gland in the neck that makes hormones to control your metabolism stays intact.
    • No scarring, which is ideal for patients who develop keloid scars.

Patients whose nodules are filled with fluid do not do as well with radiofrequency ablation. Instead, we can offer alcohol ablation, also known as percutaneous ethanol injection, to drain the nodule and inject it with alcohol, causing the nodule to shrink over time. This works very well and is a simple office procedure that can be done the same day as your initial consultation.

Prior to RFA, you will need two separate biopsies to verify that the nodule is benign. Your endocrinologist can perform a biopsy in the office if you have not had one before. You will likely need a biopsy even if you are considering surgery for your thyroid nodule. Once the biopsies show you are thyroid cancer-free, we will schedule your procedure.

Five Thyroid Patterns That Wont Show Up On Standard Lab Tests

In medicine, accurate diagnosis is essential for selecting the most effective course of treatment for a patient. Unfortunately, misdiagnosis is commonplace in the management of hypothyroidism. Countless patients with hypothyroid symptoms are dismissed because their lab values dont fit within the narrow diagnostic criteria established by standard thyroid panels others are given prescriptions for thyroid hormone replacement, a blanket approach that fails to address the underlying causes of hypothyroidism. Many of these patients suffer from patterns of thyroid dysfunction that dont show up on standard lab tests and that are unfamiliar to conventional doctors. Read on to learn about the five patterns of thyroid dysfunction that are missed by standard lab tests and how you can successfully correct these patterns and restore thyroid health in your patients.
