Frank Discussion About Weight Changes And Heart Disease Risk Needed

Awareness of the tendency for weight gain is the first crucial step for every patient with hyperthyroidism, Dr. Boelaert says. She says doctors should be more forthcoming about the probability of weight gain but that patients should be prepared to discuss it and insist it become part of your care plan.

“I tell patients, ‘When I make you better, I expect that you will gain weight. The evidence is that probably you will gain more than you lost.” So know this, and advocate for clear guidance on what you can change to slow any inevitable weight gain and to prevent exceeding your usual, healthy weight.

Dr. Boelaert found slightly more higher net weight gain in her patients who had radioactive iodine therapy than drugs alone, but she doesnt think this side effect should not steer people away from having RAI treatment since the cure is much higher with this treatment, she says.

She notices that the patients who do adopt a healthier lifestyle, if they werent already following a heart healthy diet and getting daily physical activity, when she first met them, can curtail the otherwise likely excess weight gain.

“Having an overactive thyroid is not a benign disease,” she tells her patients. Treatment is crucial and so is keeping an eye on your weight as the treatment process progresses.

Neither Dr. Boelaert nor Dr. Srinath have any disclosures.;

Side Effects In Children

Children taking Synthroid may have different side effects than do adults taking the drug. For example, some children taking Synthroid have had pseudotumor cerebri . This condition may cause headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

In addition, some children taking Synthroid have had slipped capital femoral epiphysis. This disorder may cause limping or pain in the area thats affected.

This hip condition only occurs in children whose bones are still growing. However, its important to note that having decreased thyroid hormone levels, which Synthroid is used to treat, may also increase the risk of this hip disorder.

Also, certain bone growth problems may occur in infants and children who take too much Synthroid. In this case, an infants skull may become hardened too quickly, causing increased pressure on their brain. And the growth of their skull may also be affected. Other bones in children taking too much Synthroid may also be unable to grow properly. This can lead to growth problems and decreased height.

If you have questions about side effects of Synthroid in a child using the drug, talk with your childs doctor. Theyll discuss with you the risks and benefits of treatment. And they can help prepare you for what to expect from treatment with this drug.

Adrenal Support And Stress Response

Best Medication For Hypothyroidism And Weight Loss ...

Our bodies have this amazing capability to heal. When youre in the rest and digest stage, or anabolic process, your body is actively repairing and healing itself.

When you experience stress, your body goes into fight or flight response mode, diverting its attention from healing and digestion; and goes into emergency mode, pumping your body full of adrenaline to prepare it to survive what your body perceives to be a life threatening event. Many people cite a traumatic incident in their lives as the precursor to when their Hashimotos symptoms began. Adrenal stress is a very common reason behind why people may hit a weight loss plateau.

There are 3 potential stages of adrenal dysfunction: Stage I, Stage II, and Stage III.

  • Stage I In Stage I, there will generally be too much cortisol production. Your total cortisol level is going to be elevated throughout the day.
  • Stage II In this stage, the total cortisol level will be normal, but there will be some abnormalities where it might be high in the morning, then too low in the afternoon, and then high again in the evening. This can produce some annoying symptoms like blood sugar swings, irritability, or an afternoon crash.
  • Stage III This is an advanced stage where the adrenals become depleted and do not produce enough cortisol. Youll be running on empty and have very low levels of cortisol throughout the day. This often times leads to chronic fatigue.

Managing Your Weight With Hypothyroidism

Theres a good chance youll gain weight if you indulge in a few too many comfort foods or stay away from the gym for too long. But if you have hypothyroidism, the numbers on the scale can creep up, even if youve stuck firmly to your diet and exercised religiously.

The hormones your thyroid gland releases help regulate your metabolism, or how efficiently your body burns food for energy. When your thyroid makes less of its hormones as it does in hypothyroidism your metabolism slows down. So you wont burn off calories as quickly and youll gain weight. The weight gain usually isnt extreme, maybe 5 or 10 pounds, but it can be enough to affect your self-esteem.

The more severe your hypothyroidism is, the more weight youll gain. Some of the weight gain is fat, but much of it is fluid buildup from the effects of an underactive thyroid on your kidney function.

Does Levothyroxine Ever Cause Weight Loss

(TBS #6) The Thyroid Weight Gain Paradox & Why You Can’t Lose Weight

The answer is that YES Levothyroxine and Synthroid can cause weight loss but only in certain patients.;

Since you are reading this you are most likely not one of those patients but I have .

In order for Levothyroxine to cause weight loss, you must be able to adequately convert T4 to T3 without issues.

Some patients have single nucleotide polymorphisms which make T4 to T3 conversion very slow. If you have this polymorphism then Levothyroxine and Synthroid will probably not be the best medication for you.;

On the opposite side of the spectrum, some patients are what I refer to as “super converters”.

You can give them T4 and they will turn it into T3 without any problems at all, and these patients often react to T3 containing medications with palpitations and/or anxiety.

Another subgroup of patients have reactions to the INACTIVE ingredients in Levothyroxine and Synthroid which may lead to intolerance of the medication.;

If you can’t tolerate the proper dose of Levothyroxine or Synthroid then you won’t lose weight with the medication.

And lastly, patients who don’t have any other chronic medical conditions are more likely to do well on T4 only medications.;

What I mean by that is this:

The more inflammation you have, the more chronic pain you have, the more medications you take, the more weight you have to lose, the less likely you are to do well on Levothyroxine.

Why?

Because all of these conditions will make thyroid conversion more difficult.

Follow A Diet For Hypothyroidism

Being hypothyroid doesnt mean avoiding all your favorite foods. After cutting out sugar and going low-carb, you probably want to know what is on and off the table literally.

Weve made a list of foods to eat and avoid, but the bottom line is that foods that feed inflammation need to be removed from your meals. Clearing up inflammation through diet can help your thyroid function properly.

Additional Tips To Lose Weight With An Underactive Thyroid

Here are some extra pointers to help you lose weight with an underactive thyroid:

  • Prioritise sleep: Alongside poor diet and exercise, short sleep duration is one of the strongest risk factors for obesity. Good quality sleep is fundamental for weight loss.
  • Thyroid support supplements: Anecdotal reports suggest supplements can give you more energy, at least for the first few months of use. But theyre likely unnecessary if you regularly eat nutritious foods.
  • Use smaller plates and small spoons: Studies show the bigger the plate and the bigger the cutlery, the more calories we consume . This proven phenomenon is called the Delbouef illusion.
  • Plate your meals first: Instead of putting all the prepared food at the table , plate your meal first and then sit down. You are much less likely to go for a second round.
  • Drink lots of water: Keep a water bottle on hand wherever you go. Research suggests the more water we drink before meals, the fewer calories we eat overall .
  • Be mindful: Mindful eating is about becoming more aware of your experiences, physical cues and feelings about food. It is based on a form of meditation called mindfulness.

It is well-known that thyroid hormones play an essential role in regulating our metabolism. People with hypothyroidism have high levels of TSH and low levels of T3 and T4. This imbalance can cause an increase in weight, which is due in part to an increase in fluid retention.

Weight gain is one of the main reasons people initially request to have their thyroid function tested.

Youll want to choose foods that are rich in;omega-3 fatty acids including anchovies, salmon, halibut, and mussels rather than omega-6 fatty acids, which are found in corn oil, vegetable oil, mayonnaise, salad dressings, and many processed foods.

Scanniello says eating this way is a good idea for everyone because many of the foods with the potential to lead to inflammation arent healthy anyway. I believe everyone can benefit from limiting or eliminating sugar and highly processed foods and choosing unsaturated fats, fruits, vegetables,;nuts, seeds, and lean proteins, Scanniello says.

She says the anti-inflammatory diet could be especially helpful for someone whos dealing with chronic inflammation as a result of a health condition. Athletes and people who exercise at a high intensity and are looking to lessen their baseline inflammation could also find it beneficial, she says.

Synthroid And Birth Control

In most cases, youll continue to take Synthroid during pregnancy if you were using the drug before becoming pregnant.

But if youre sexually active and you or your partner can become pregnant, its still important to talk with your doctor about your birth control needs. Theyll recommend whether you need to use birth control while youre taking Synthroid.

Its important to note that Synthroid may interact with certain birth control drugs. For more information about birth control drugs that may interact with Synthroid, see the Synthroid interactions section above.

Add More Protein Into Your Diet

Along with proper exercise, Dr. Apovian says protein is the other key to building muscle. Her suggestion is backed by the Center for Nutrition and Weight Management, which recommends a higher-protein diet of 1.2 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of ideal body weight for women with hypothyroidism. That means, if your ideal weight is 130 pounds , you should have 70 to 90 grams of protein daily.

A good rule is to build your meals around protein, but also include lots of veggies, healthy carbs like fresh fruit and whole grains, and healthy fats like avocados and olive oil.

Even with these guidelines, it’s worth working with an R.D. to come up with a personal diet plan for hypothyroidism, as certain foods or dietary restrictions can screw with your hormone levels even more.

What Is The Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland that is normally located in the lower front of the neck. The thyroids job is to make thyroid hormones, which are secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body. Thyroid hormones help the body use energy, stay warm and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working as they should.

What Is Causing Weight Gain After Antithyroid Drug Therapy

Weight loss Guide for Thyroid Patients – Why you REALLY Can’t Lose Weight

Dr. Boelaert still cant say for sure why individuals who are treated with antithyroid drugs to reverse their hyperthyroidism show a tendency to gain back the lost weight plus more. “It appears something in the disease process or perhaps from the treatment makes them end up heavier.” Clearly, more research is needed for us to understand the specific mechanisms behind the shift upward in body weight as a result of non-surgical treatment for overactive thyroid, she says.

Also, we know that appetite signals get disturbed when the thyroid goes out of whack, she says. When patients come in for treatment, ”lots of patients say, ‘I am losing weight although I feel like am eating like a horse.'” After the antithyroid treatment begins, at least some people may continue to eat the same larger amounts that they have grown accustomed to, and this may contribute to the weight gain, she says.

Do appetite signals return to normal once treatment begin? “We don’t know, but we hope to study this,” Dr. Boelaert says.

She worries about the adverse effects that are associated with overweight. “People with an overactive thyroid already have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease,” she explains. “If they then become overweight or obese, that is a further ‘hit.”’ So recognizing your increased risk for heart disease, and concerns about weight gain should be discussed with your doctor, and incorporated into your treatment plan.;;

Why And How Does Mitochondrial Destruction Happen

Mitochondria as we discussed before is your energy power house.

It consumes fuel and converts into energy to power our whole body.;Now mitochondria are very efficient machine and it can consume glucose or fatty acids and break them down to produce energy in the form of ATP.

During this energy production process, there are some waste products that are also formed which are called Reaction oxygen species .

In people with thyroid dysfunction, this mitochondrial machinery starts to break down and which causes metabolic dysfunction.;This metabolic dysfunction is the reason people start to gain weight.;

Now let us understand why does mitochondrial destruction happen.

So the underlying process that causes destruction of mitochondria is inflammation.

The inflammation inside our body causes mitochondrial destruction.;It is well known now in the medical community that patients with a thyroid disorder have a high level of inflammation markers present.

So this underlying inflammation first destroys your mitochondria and then destroys your thyroid gland.

Destruction of the thyroid gland further slows down the mitochondria.;So you see its a vicious cycle which forms and makes it very challenging for people to lose weight.;
