What Causes Thyroid Nodules
The most common cause of a thyroid nodule in kids is actually a pseudonodule or fake nodule. This is when inflammation of the gland makes the thyroid swell in one place. This inflammation might look like a nodule, but there isnt really any nodule at all.
The next most common type of thyroid nodule is a cyst, which usually happens when normal fluid pockets in the thyroid get bigger. These types of nodules are always benign , but may continue to grow over time.
Thyroid nodules that are due to growths are common in adults but less common in kids. Most thyroid nodules are benign and doctors dont always know why they happen.
Kids and teens with Hashimotos thyroiditis have a higher risk of thyroid nodules. As with goiters, a lack of iodine can cause thyroid nodules.

Thyroid Nodule Symptom # : A Lump In The Neck That You Can Feel
- What to do about it?
Thyroid nodules that the patient can feel under the skin, which is confirmed by a doctor should almost always be examined by an ultrasound test. Depending on the characteristics of the nodule , the nodule may need a needle biopsy. We have an entire section of this website on thyroid needle biopsies.
How Are They Diagnosed
If your doctor thinks you have a nodule, he or she will do a physical exam and will ask you if you have symptoms or about any changes in how you’ve been feeling.
You may have tests to see how well your thyroid is working. Possible tests include:
- A blood test to check the level of thyroid hormone in your body.
- A thyroid scan to get information about your thyroid gland and nodules. Another test called an uptake scan can be done at the same time to see how well your thyroid gland is working.
- A thyroid ultrasound to see the number and size of nodules.
You may have a fine-needle aspiration to remove a small amount of material from the nodule to check for cancer.
If your nodule is not cancerous, your doctor will see you regularly to monitor the size of your nodule.

Thyroid Nodule Symptom # : A Cough That Just Won’t Go Away Frequent Coughing And A Need To Keep Clearing Your Throat
- What to do about it?
Thyroid nodules that cause the patient to cough should always be evaluated with an ultrasound scan. Occasionally a CAT scan is required because it is better at looking at big thyroid goiters than ultrasound is . Sometimes it just can’t be known for sure if the thyroid nodule is actually causing the coughing. Often these patients undergo a laryngoscopy . If the thyroid nodule is causing the coughing, or there is a high liklihood it is the cause, then surgery is indicated. Of course, it is now very important for you to chose your surgeon wisely. The nerves to the vocal cords are occasionally damaged by a surgeon removing a thyroid and this will cause severe horseness and a loss of voice for months or even forever. That Lump Feeling In Your Throat Sometimes Isnt Just A Feeling; It Could Be Cancer Acid Reflux Anxiety And Not So Surprisingly Low Or Underactive Thyroid
When the thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormone, it is called hypothyroidism, says Gene Liu, MD, MMM, President, Chair, Department of Surgery; Chief, Division of Otolaryngology, Cedars-Sinai Medical Group.
Patients who are hypothyroid can have a feeling of a lump on the throat, or globus sensation about a third of the time, and is highly dependent on the reason for the hypothyroidism, continues Dr. Liu.
Many hypothyroid patients have underlying inflammation from autoimmune thyroid disease, post-viral episodes or other types of thyroiditis. And this inflammation in the neck can cause the globus sensation.
How well your thyroid is functioning can be determined by a blood test. If you have an underactive thyroid gland, this does not always mean weight gain.
In fact, low thyroid can cause a menagerie of symptoms that most people would never associate with poor function of this so-called master gland.
Yes, it can cause some weight gain, but often, there is none. Instead, an affected individual might have a completely different batch of symptoms other than the ones that get the most media attention, which are weight gain, hair loss or thinning hair, feeling cold when nobody else does and fatigue.

How Are Thyroid Nodules Treated
If a thyroid nodule is not cancer and is not causing problems, your doctor will watch it closely for changes. But if the nodule is large or causing problems with swallowing or breathing, you’ll need surgery to remove it.
If the nodule is causing hyperthyroidism, your doctor may recommend a dose of radioactive iodine. This most often comes in a liquid that you swallow. Or your doctor may have you take medicine to slow down the hormone production. In some cases, surgery may be done to remove an overactive thyroid nodule.
If your nodule is cancer , you’ll need surgery. This is done to remove the nodule and some or all of the thyroid. You may also need treatment with radioactive iodine to destroy any cancer cells that remain. After surgery, you may need to take thyroid medicine for the rest of your life.
