Can Thyroid Problems Cause Belly Fat

Realize That Your Weight Loss From Hyperthyroidism Is Likely Temporary

Can Belly Fat Cause Shortness Of Breath

Patients with overactive thyroid are often delighted at their initial weight loss, Dr. Srinath says. But she cautions them about the chance that this trend will reverse, as quantified in studies like Dr. Boelaerts. Knowing that weight gain is likely once drug treatment begins to normalize the thyroid functionand that weight gain may overshoot, resulting in unwanted excess body weightis an important first step toward preventing it.

Treatment For Low Testosterone And Hypothyroidism

Often testosterone levels and underactive thyroid can be treated with a healthy diet which commonly includes dietary changes or supplementing strong thyroid healthy herbs. There are various other ways of improving thyroid functionality naturally as well.

However, for more serious conditions, nutritional changes are not an option and medication is often used, such as Synthroid or Armour Thyroid.

The usual treatment for low testosterone is a replacement therapy. Women are often given transdermal creams, and men have much more options including creams, gels, patches and of course injections.

Natural ways to improve low testosterone and hypothyroidism include more sleep, a better diet, exercising, and less stress, among others. A Better diet is far away from restricting and lowering the caloric intake. Our article on the best and worst foods for your thyroid may help in this regard. Stress increases cortisol levels which is a stress-related hormone which interferes with testosterone and lowers its amount in the body.

Regarding sleep aim for at least eight hours of good night sleep it will help to maintain optimal secretion of hormones, including the testosterone.

Follow A Diet For Hypothyroidism

Being hypothyroid doesnt mean avoiding all your favorite foods. After cutting out sugar and going low-carb, you probably want to know what is on and off the table literally.

Weve made a list of foods to eat and avoid, but the bottom line is that foods that feed inflammation need to be removed from your meals. Clearing up inflammation through diet can help your thyroid function properly.

Get Reverse T3 Checked For Low Thyroid Problem

Some physicians believe treatment of hypothyroidism is simple. Give the patient a prescription for T4, in the form of Synthroid or generic Levothyroxine, and everything will be fine. But sometimes, what might be the perfect treatment for one patient will actually make another patient much sicker. For patients with thyroid hormone conversion problems, treatment with T3 can be very beneficial.

To properly treat hypothyroidism, you must first know your Ts. Thyroxine, or T4, is the thyroid storage hormone. Triodothyronine, or T3, is the energy hormone. For the body to use T4, it must first convert it to the active hormone T3, giving energy to every cell in the body.

Another critical thyroid hormone is reverse T3 . Reverse T3 is the bodys emergency brake. Many endocrinologists believe that Reverse T3 is simply an inactive metabolite with no physiologic effect on the body. They couldnt be more wrong.

In some patients, instead of properly converting T4 to T3, the body converts too much T4 to reverse T3, effectively shutting down the body. These patients often experience debilitating fatigue and weight gain, and continue to get worse in spite of taking T4 thyroid hormone medication.

How to Lose Weight with an Underactive Thyroid

Most doctors will tell you the answer to losing weight is to simply eat less.

But we both know that doesnt work, especially not in the long run.

But Ive had many clients who have gone prolonged periods of time eating 500 to 1000 calories per day, trying to simply maintain the few pounds they lose and prevent it from coming back.

When your liver becomes under-nourished

  • Your liver cant store glycogen
  • Your blood sugar becomes very unstable
  • Your stress hormones rise further, and
  • Your metabolism and thyroid become further suppressed

Ill tell you what it takes for healthy weight loss in a second, but it doesnt involve eating less.

It involves eating more.

Tricky To Diagnose Treat

Diagnosing and treating an underactive thyroid can be challenging, he says, especially when a patient’s thyroid hormone levels test in the borderline-normal range. In most cases, a hormone level between 4 and 10 is the accepted range for treatment. When patients experience symptoms with a hormone level of 3, doctors are faced with the question of whether or not to treat. And it’s a tricky question, because treatment is not just a matter of taking a little pill that immediately cures all your symptoms. Finding just the right amount of hormone replacement medication to keep levels stable can be a difficult balancing act.

In Kruger’s case, it took her nearly 20 years to finally feel like “I got my life back.” During that time, despite being on medication, her thyroid levels were still problematic. She continued to feel tired and to gain weight, her cholesterol levels shot up and she began developing heart disease, a consequence of insufficient thyroid.

Try A Ketogenic Diet And Intermittent Fasting

Many people with thyroid problems praised the effectiveness of the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. Jill gained 80 pounds and, now in her 60s, found she could not lose a pound. After I started the keto diet with intermittent fasting, Im down 22 pounds so far! Fifty-something Alexandra is down 30 pounds in just two months combining intermittent fasting and a keto diet: This works for me. As an added benefit, my blood sugar and sleep have improved significantly.

Hyperthyroidism Weight Gain Statistics

For their study, Dr. Boelaert and colleagues used the Thyroid Clinic Database at the University Hospitals Birmingham National Health Service Foundation Trust. They examined data on all adults with hyperthyroidism who were treated with either antithyroid drugs radioiodine , also called radioactive iodine or both between 2000 and 2014.

The individuals were followed up for three years after treatment. None of them had a thyroidectomysurgical removal of the thyroidwhich is another treatment option.

In all, the study looked at 1,373 patients with hyperthyroidism, ages 18 to 90. During treatment, the men gained about 17.6 pounds on average, while the women gained an average of a little over 12 pounds. The researchers compared the patients weight gain with that of a matched comparison population of nearly 11,000 people who did not have an overactive thyroid.

At the start of drug treatment, those who were diagnosed as having an overactive thyroid weighed less on average than the comparison population, Dr. Boelaert says, which was expected. However, after treatment, the individuals with hyperthyroidism were more likely than the comparison group to have a body weight that qualified as obesespecifically, men were 1.7 times more likely and women, 1.3 times more likely.

In other words, the participants went from weighing less on average than the comparison group before treatment to, in many cases, gaining enough weight to put them in the obese range.

Impact Of Water Retention

How to Lose Belly Fat and Thyroid disorders

Other than the visible puffiness, the retention also triggers several health conditions. The increase in fluid produces undue pressure on nerves resulting in inflammation.

When the nerve compression is more in the forearm or wrist region, it causes carpal tunnel syndrome, which exhibits symptoms such as tingling, numbness, aches and burning sensation. Restricted blood flow due to fluid accumulation can cause symptoms such as tinnitus, dizziness, headaches, visual disturbances and breathlessness.

Water retention can also exert pressure on nerve endings in the legs resulting in leg cramps during nighttime.

What Is The Relationship Between Thyroid And Weight

It has been appreciated for a very long time that there is a complex relationship between thyroid disease, body weight and metabolism. Thyroid hormone regulates metabolism in both animals and humans. Metabolism is determined by measuring the amount of oxygen used by the body over a specific amount of time. If the measurement is made at rest, it is known as the basal metabolic rate . Indeed, measurement of the BMR was one of the earliest tests used to assess a patients thyroid status. Patients whose thyroid glands were not working were found to have low BMRs, and those with overactive thyroid glands had high BMRs. Later studies linked these observations with measurements of thyroid hormone levels and showed that low thyroid hormone levels were associated with low BMRs and high thyroid hormone levels were associated with BMRs. Most physicians no longer use BMR due to the complexity in doing the test and because the BMR is subject to many influences other than the thyroid state.

Weak Achy Or Stiff Muscles And Joints

Symptoms of hypothyroidism include weak and aching muscles, joint pain and stiffness, and potentially evencarpal tunnel syndrome. This can make it feel even harder to exercise.

Ask anyone with chronic joint pain: Staying active is a massive struggle.

Although over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen can relieve pain, they come with all sorts of side effects. Fortunately, there are many natural ways to reduce hypothyroidism-related joint and muscle swelling so you can get moving again.

Thyroid hormone replacement, thyroid medication , or anti-inflammatory supplements can treat the root causes of joint and muscle swelling.

When your joints and muscles feel good, physical activity and a healthier weight are easier to achieve.

So What Is The Best Way To Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism

Unfortunately the whole idea of eating less and exercising more just doesnt work.

At least not in the long run.

The only safe way to do it is to maximize and maintain your thyroid health and metabolism, which oftentimes requires you to eat more, not less.

And as Dr. Raymond Peat points out, the more your metabolism heals the more nutrition you need to sustain it.

Usually the increased metabolic rate, with adequate protein, causes some muscle increase, and when that happens the basic calorie requirement will increase. The increase of muscle mass should continue for several weeks, and during that time the weight might increase a little, but usually the loss of water and fat will compensate for the greater muscle mass.

Dr. Raymond Peat

This is how eating more can oftentimes lead to more weight loss.

But when done in a healthy thyroid supportive way, weight loss becomes a slow and steady process.

And its a process that leads to long term sustainable weight loss.

So, remember, you dont lose weight to fix your thyroid.

You fix your thyroid to lose weight.

And an easy way to get started fixing your thyroid is to use our 3 Food Triple-Thyroid-Boosting Daily Protocol.

This daily protocol will show you a very different side to your hypothyroidism. Its based on real science Its been tested with real hypothyroidism sufferers and it simply works.

If that sounds like what you need, then just download the protocol and use it for yourself.

Have Your Thyroid Levels Checked Regularly

It’s very important to be closely monitored while you are under treatment, Dr. Srinath explains. Particularly in the first 18 months, patients should be in contact with their health care team every three months, for services such as lab testing, to keep an eye on thyroid function, which requires monitoring thyroid hormone levels. “We want to avoid extreme fluctuations in thyroid hormone levels, whichif out of rangecould accelerate the tendency to experience weight gain,” Dr. Srinath says.

Relationship Between Testosterone Levels And The Thyroid

Testosterone is a hormone produced by ovaries in women and testicles in men.

It is often considered a male sex hormone, but its deficiency can cause problems in both males and females.

In this article, were going to talk about the functions of testosterone and how this hormone relates to thyroid health especially underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism. Were going to discuss ways to regulate testosterone levels naturally and with the help of medications.

The thyroid gland produces the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine and thyroxine which regulate many processes in our bodies, primarily hormonal balance, protein synthesis and metabolic rate.

The thyroid gland is located in the throat, at the base of the neck. If we perform a cross-section of the throat, inside we could find the hyoid bone or the tongue-bone, the larynx, and the butterfly shaped gland underneath the larynx which is the thyroid.

The thyroid problems can be caused by iodine deficiency, other nutritional issues, genetics, etc. The thyroid gland is most commonly affected by two diseases.

Hyperthyroidism is a condition when the gland produces unusually high amounts of thyroid hormone. The most common cause for this condition is an autoimmune disorder called Graves disease.

Can Thyroid Hormone Be Used To Help Me Lose Weight

Thyroid hormones have been used as a weight loss tool in the past. Starting or increasing thyroid hormone to cause thyroid hormone levels to be elevated is unlikely to dramatically change weight. Studies have shown that excess thyroid hormone treatment can help produce more weight loss than can be achieved by dieting alone, but includes the risk of major negative consequences from the use of thyroid hormone to help with weight loss, such as the loss of muscle protein, loss of bone, and/or heart problems. Furthermore, once the excess thyroid hormone is stopped, any weight loss is usually regained.

Choose A Physical Activity You Enjoy

Thyroid Hormone, Grains & Belly Fat in Menopause

Choose a physical activity that you will enjoy and continue, such as walking, yoga, swimming, Pilates, running, Zumba, or P90X. Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy it. Now perhaps you are saying, Physical activity?! Im exhausted even after a full nights sleep. I cant even imagine getting enough energy to think about exercise, let alone do it.

However, you will need to tailor your activity based on your adrenal levels and the stage of adrenal dysfunction your body may currently be experiencing . The more advanced the stages of your adrenal dysfunction are, the less likely youre going to be able to tolerate exercise.

Generally, when it comes to exercise, we find that in Stage I adrenal dysfunction, things like running, aerobic sports, and CrossFit are going to make people feel better. In people with Stage III adrenal dysfunction, however, these types of activities may make them feel worse and worsen their adrenal fatigue and dysfunction. A person with Stage III dysfunction may do better with more gentle, relaxing exercises like yoga and stretching, as well as with muscle building exercises like lifting weight. Remember: muscle boosting is great for our own internal metabolism. Having more muscles will actually make it easier for you to lose weight!

Again, its important to find the appropriate amount of exercise and tailor your needs to your own body.

What Is The Thyroid

In the base of the neck, just above the collarbone, is a butterfly-shaped gland. The thyroid is part of the endocrine system of glands, and as such, it secretes hormones directly into the bloodstream instead of into ducts. The hormones secreted by the thyroid regulate the rates of different activities in your body. This gland, then, is your body’s metronome and helps set the tempo of the heart beat and how quickly the body burns calories. Both of these activities are central to your metabolism and define not only how you feel physically but also how likely you are to gain weight.

When the thyroid is too active, a condition known as hyperthyroidism, your thyroid produces more hormones than necessary. Hyperthyroidism speeds the heart and raises the metabolism, causing a person to lose weight. An additional issue is sensitivity to heat people with this disorder often become overheated very quickly.

The exact opposite occurs when the thyroid gland is not active enough. A sluggish thyroid does not create enough hormones, and this is referred to as hypothyroidism. People with this condition gain weight easily, often feel fatigue, and find cold temperatures problematic.

One study, though it focuses on thyroid cancer, may provide some evidence.

What Hormonal Imbalances Can Cause Belly Fat

  • Thyroid: The thyroid gland secretes hormones that control metabolism, a process by which the body consumes energy. When your thyroid doesnt produce enough thyroid hormones , most body processes slow down, which leads to weight gain, especially around the abdomen. According to the American Thyroid Association, weight gain due to hypothyroidism may be caused by a buildup of salt and water as opposed to a buildup of fat.
  • Cortisol: Cortisol is released in response to stressful situations. When you are agitated, your body goes into flight-or-fight or survival mode, triggered by the secretion of cortisol by the adrenal gland. Increased cortisol can lead to the accumulation of fat around the abdomen.
  • Leptin: Leptin helps you feel full after a meal. However, when leptin levels increase and lead to leptin resistance, this can cause increased food intake and fat accumulation in the abdomen.
  • Estrogen:Low testosterone levels may reduce libido and increase abdominal fat in both men and women.
  • Testosterone: Low testosterone levels in males decrease growth and increase fat accumulation in the body. Increased testosterone levels in females increase insulin resistance, which leads to the accumulation of abdominal fat.

Hashimotos Often Goes Undiagnosed

Hashimotos prompts your body to create antibodies that attack and inflame the thyroid.

But doctors often dont check blood for the telltale antibodies because all hypothyroidism is treated the same way.

Many people are never told they have Hashimotos, says Dr. Kellis. But at the end of the day, if your thyroid is underactive, its usually Hashimotos thyroiditis, she says.

Other, less common, causes of hypothyroidism include:

  • Surgical removal of the thyroid.
  • Radiation to the neck.
  • Use of certain psychiatric, heart, cancer or rheumatologic medications.

So knowing whether or not you have Hashimotos may be a moot point unless youre a woman trying to conceive.

Hashimotos carries a slightly higher risk of miscarriage, so youll need the blood test for thyroid antibodies, says Dr. Kellis.

You may need to take thyroid supplements, even if your TSH levels are normal.
