Spotlight On Aging: Hypothyroidism In Older People
Many older people have some degree of hypothyroidism. About 10% of women and 6% of men are affected.
Typical symptoms, such as weight gain, muscle cramps, tingling of the hands, and the inability to tolerate cold, are less common among older people. When such symptoms do occur among older people, they are less obvious.
Older people may also have less typical symptoms. For example, they may lose weight, become confused, and have a decreased appetite, joint stiffness, joint and muscle pains, weakness, and a tendency to fall.
Because symptoms in older people can be different, are often subtle and vague, and are common among older people who do not have hypothyroidism, doctors may not recognize these symptoms as being caused by hypothyroidism. A screening test, in which blood levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone are measured, is important. The test should be done at age 65 even if people have no symptoms of hypothyroidism.
A Note From Paloma Health
Our team of doctors and nutritionists want you to feel your absolute best. Your thyroid plays a role in every system in your body, including your eyes. However, many other medical conditions may cause dry eyes and blurry vision. If you have trouble with your eyes, reach out to your endocrinologist to make sure your thyroid is in check.
Answer: Hypothyroidism & Insurance Coverage
Hypothyroidism can cause lower eyelid bags, although it is not a common presentation. It is more likely that you developed the bags independent of your thyroid condition. Insurance companies will only pay for upper eyelid hooding that obstructs peripheral vision – however, this must be demonstrated by a specific test in your Oculoplastic Surgeon’s office. In addition, the insurance company usually requires photographs for proofs of substantial hooding – this will be reviewed by a doctor from the insurance company. I hope you find this helpful.

Why Do Puffy Eyes Occur In Menopause
Sometimes, we women in midlife tend to overlook the diet and lifestyle we practice. I had encounters with puffy eyes and had no idea why it was happening to me. I already spent some bucks to see a doctor in hopes to have it treated, only to find out on my own that the only culprit was my all-time favorite licorice!
So never forget that what you eat can directly cause puffy eyes too! It could be the allergies that they can cause. Worse, due to the hormonal changes we are in, the food we eat can also easily lead us to gut problems, irritable bowel syndrome, or in some cases, candida and puffy eyes being their common denominator. Without a doubt, we have to be mindful of our food choices as we age!
Accordingly, it is a universally-known idea that menopause and changing hormones are two inseparable things.
Estrogen dominance, which usually occurs during perimenopause, can produce puffy eyes as a symptom. When estrogen is high, it suppresses the proper functioning of our thyroid glands. With insufficient thyroid hormones, our body functioning slows down and one side effect is the retention of excess fluids which could make the eyes puffy! When estrogen fluctuates on the other hand, the skin in our eyes will also start to lose its elasticity, because estrogen is no longer there to help in collagen production.
When I Got Home I Started Googling Bug Eyes And Droopy Eyelids
Thats when I found out about Graves eye disease, also known as thyroid eye disease . As I learned, puffy eyelids, a gritty feeling in your eyes, and bulging eyes could all be due to swelling from an abnormal immune reaction to the muscles and fatty tissue around my eyes.
While its not a given when youre diagnosed with Graves disease that youll develop TED, up to 50 percent of people with Graves disease have eye symptoms, most often within six months of their diagnosis, according to the American Thyroid Association. This may be because the same out-of-whack antibody that attacks your thyroid can also target your eyes.
I suspected that this was what was going on with me, so I went to an optometrist that spring and asked for a referral to an eye doctor who worked with TED patients. He ignored my requests, but I walked out with a new pair of glasses.
After more research online, I found an eye doctor and surgeon near me who worked with TED patients. At my first appointment, the doctor told me he wasnt sure if I had TED, and if I did, it was a mild case. He advised that I schedule a follow-up appointment in six months.
When I went back in, they told me there was nothing they could do to help with my swollen eyelids or bulging eyesId just have to live with them. I left completely devastated and cried all the way home.

Sooth and treat dry eyes with artificial tears. Eye drops work by merely providing moisture to your eyes. You can find drops in preservative and non-preservative forms, and both tend to work well. You may want to avoid eye drops that also claim to reduce redness, as these drops can constrict blood vessels in your eyes and cause further irritation.
Ointments can also relieve dry eye, although they may blur your vision. Therefore, it is best to use these at night.
Your ophthalmologist may prescribe oral medication or eye drops that primarily target inflammation. Swelling around the eyes prevents your tear ducts from releasing moisture into your eye. Some prescriptive medications may include antibiotics that also have an anti-inflammatory effect.
Your ophthalmologist may recommend you install small clear tubes of medication between your lower eyelid and eye. These dissolvable daily inserts resemble a tiny grain of rice that releases medication to moisten the eye throughout the day.
Natural and alternative remedies
A warm, wet compress can do wonders for your eyes. Similarly, massaging your eyes gently can help stimulate your tear ducts. Some people find castor oil drops to be beneficial in relieving dry eye. As with adding any natural remedy, consult your ophthalmologist. Acupuncture may relieve dry eyes by reducing inflammation around the eye, and thus relieving eye irritation.
A Carnivore Dieters Perspective
Frank Tufano a man with a wealth of information and in-depth YouTube channel discusses his challenge with bags under his eyes.
He says a lot of people suggest to him that his bags are the result of not having a properly nutritious diet. Frank is on an Ancestral Indigenous diet which is pretty much a carnivore diet. He even wrote a book about it appropriately called, Ancestral Indigenous Diet.
He explains in this YouTube video what he believes is the cause of his under the eye bags and what he does to remedy the problem.
Hopefully this post was able to provide some decent information or point you in a direction that will help solve your problems.

How To Reduce Under Eye Dark Circles
The simplest, quickest way to reduce under eye bags and dark circles is to apply a cold compress. It helps to reduce swelling and shrinks the dilated blood vessels around the eyes, minimising the appearance of under eye circles. Another common solution is simply just to get more sleep. Weve written previously about the benefits of sleeping for your eye health, and this extends to reducing the appearance of puffy, tired eyes.
For some people, however, cold compresses and an extra hour in bed wont make much difference to their under eye dark circles. Some people, particularly those whose eye sockets are deeper than usual, might benefit from tissue fillers. This pads out the area below the eye and leaves the skin looking less sunken, achieving a more lifted appearance.
Another popular surgical procedure to remove eye bags is cosmetic eye surgery. Also known as Blepharoplasty, its a procedure we offer here at Optimax. Excess skin, fat and muscle are carefully removed from both the upper and lower eyelids, eliminating the previously hooded and puffy appearance of them. With a simple procedure and relatively quick recovery time, cosmetic eye surgery is growing in popularity all the time. Please get in touch, either by emailing or calling 0800 093 1110 if youd like to learn more about cosmetic eye surgery at Optimax.
Hypothyroid Dark Circles And Eyebags
I have hypothyroidism for a over a year now. I was on Levothyroxine but it was making me feel more exhausted and unwell so after discussing with my doctor i stopped taking them.
I now take a lot of vitmamins, i dont eat any gluten products or meat and i eat very organic now and my energy levels are much better. I can last the whole day now without feeling exhausted and drained.
The only annoying thing is over the past 6 months ive developed some nasty dark circles and eye bags. Ive read this is due to my thyroid. I sleep between 8-10 hours per night so i know its not due to be not getting enough rest. Eventhough my energy levels are good my eyes can feel very puffy and tired.
Is there anything i can take or do to get rid of them? its not nice catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror and seeing them, they look awful and i hate the tired puffy feeling.

Problems Associated With Thyroid Eye Disease
Dry irritated eyes
TED may cause you to experience dry, irritated and often teary eyes. This is usually due to the eyelids retracting and or protruding. When the eyelids do not close completely at night, the cornea dries out and becomes quite uncomfortable. The use of lubricating ointment for the eye at night and artificial tears during the day can provide a great deal of relief. Do not be afraid to use the tears frequently, as much as every 1/2 to 1 hour if necessary.
TED can cause swelling, irritation and scarring of the muscles that move the eyes. This can lead to double vision. Double vision may not be present all the time, sometimes it is noticeable only when looking in certain directions, while in other patients it is always present. Often the amount of double vision will change week to week. At times it can disappear completely without treatment. Once the double vision has been stable for at least several months, surgery can be performed to correct it if necessary. Dr. Dailey will refer you to a referring provider for the surgery.

Coping With Weight Gain
The symptom linked to hypothyroidism that gets the most attention, but actually has the least overall impact, is weight gain. Its typically fairly minimal, and usually is mostly water weight, Pearce says.
To reduce water weight and feel better in general:
- Stay hydrated. Again, you want to drink lots of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
- Eat a varied diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
- Adjust calories and add daily physical activity, which will also help boost your energy level while youre getting your thyroid condition under control.

What Are The Longer
With the correct treatment, thyroid eye disease can be well managed and patients can live full and active lives. Most of the effects of the thyroid eye disease will settle with time and when thyroid function is stabilised. Patients taking carbimazole tablets to treat hyperthyroidism may need to take them daily for life, although definitive treatment of the overactive thyroid gland with radioiodine or surgery is generally preferred, once the eye disease has settled down. Regular blood tests should be carried out to monitor thyroid hormone levels and the dose of carbimazole adjusted accordingly. However, there are other treatment options such as thyroidectomy or radioiodine treatment that can be considered once the eye disease has settled down.
The changes in the physical appearance of the eyes can have a psychological effect on the individual, causing low self-esteem. The long-term consequences of the disease, even after the thyroid has settled down, may be difficult to accept. Some patients may have a permanent change to their appearance, which may require surgery. Very rarely, there is a permanent loss of vision this can happen if the disease is left untreated at the sight-threatening stage.
Patients should stop smoking as this is known to aggravate the condition. Sunglasses may be necessary even when indoors. If double vision is not corrected, driving will be dangerous. Patients should discuss any concerns with their doctor.
What Causes Bags Under The Eyes
There are several reasons people get puffy eyes, including:

Bags under your eyes are basically puffiness or swelling that occurs under the eyes. This is a common sight as it appears with ageing.
