How To Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism

Some people with hypothyroidism find that they cant lose weight until they optimize their thyroid treatment. Mary wasnt able to lose weight until she started on a WP Thyroid natural desiccated thyroid drug. I lost 40 pounds in a year. Katya, who had irritable bowel syndrome in addition to hypothyroidism, wasnt able to lose weight: Then, my doctor put me on Tirosint, which is designed for people who dont absorb well. Thats when I finally started losing weight.

How Is Hyperthyroidism Diagnosed

Early detection is important so that you and your doctor can outline a plan for hyperthyroidism treatment before it causes irreversible damage. Brenessa Lindeman, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Medical Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, emphasizes the need for people with suspicious symptoms to advocate for their own health and get checked for hyperthyroidism early to prevent serious complications like osteoporosis, premature menopause, or even cardiac arrest.

Methods of diagnosis for hyperthyroidism include:

  • Analysis of medical history and symptoms
  • Physical examination
  • An ultrasound or nuclear medicine scan of your thyroid to see if it has nodules, or to determine whether it is inflamed or overactive
  • Blood tests to measure levels of thyroid hormones and related substances, including thyroid stimulating hormone , triiodothyronine , thyroxine , and thyroid peroxidase antibody

S To Attaining Your Ideal Body Composition

Hope is not lost! Your motivation may be lagging because the weight is not melting off even while taking thyroid hormone replacement. There are proactive steps you can take to address issues keeping you from meeting your goals.

Get your thyroid tested Discuss the results with your doctor to see if your TSH levels are in the higher end of the reference range, or if your T3 or TBG is low. You may need to adjust your current medication or supplement with T3 in order to find your optimal thyroid levels.

Optimize your thyroid medication Take levothyroxine on an empty stomach either a half hour before breakfast or before bedtime. Wait at least three to four hours after taking your medication before taking supplements or drinks that contain calcium or iron. Also, discuss any changes in your medications with your doctor.

Get tested for insulin and leptin resistance If you have these conditions, discuss treatment options with your doctor.

Exercise regularly Lifestyle changes, such as physical activity, which improve body composition , improve thyroid function. Regular exercise raises your metabolism, curbs your appetite, lowers blood sugar levels, and reduces insulin and leptin resistance.

Change your diet Work with your doctor to find a diet plan that will provide optimal thyroid health and control your weight while helping to manage or prevent conditions associated with hypothyroidism.

Cut Back On Added Sugars And Refined Starches

I need to begin with this clarification:

Carbohydrates are not inherently bad for you. That is, they do not make you fat or sick on their own .It always comes back to total calories consumed.

That said, carbs in the form of added sugars and highly refined starches are unhealthy and unnecessary. They offer almost zero nutritional benefit and make up a large portion of the excess calories we consume.

In fact, the average American adults consumption of added sugar increased by more than 30% in the last 30 years, with children consuming approximately 20% more. This was illustrated below by Obesity.org.

Fortunately those numbers have began to reverse a trend that needs to continue. Nevertheless, cutting back on added sugar is still the most simple and direct way to cut out excess empty calories.

This is done by limiting intake of junk foods, flavoured drinks , alcohol, white bread, most cereals and muesli bars, and a good portion of packaged food in your supermarkets health food aisle. That includes gluten-free junk food its still junk food.

Now its unrealistic to expect yourself to completely avoid added sugar every day of the year. But you need to begin taking actionable steps that help you cut back and form healthier habits.

Start by not having junk foods at home, or at least keep them out of sight in a cupboard you never use.

Your thyroid gland weighs less than an ounce, yet has the power to affect weight gain by an average of 20 to 30 pounds if its not working properly.

Your thyroid is a small gland in the front of your neck just below your Adams apple. When its working as it should, your thyroid releases hormones that play a huge role in how your body uses energy, and in how your organs function. Because your thyroid controls your metabolism it can also have an effect on your weight.

The thyroids function is to regulate the metabolism of the body how fast or slow things go, says Kimberly Bethel, MD, of Trotwood Physician Center. It affects everything from the top of the head all the way down to the toes. And we know it affects a persons weight. If you are a fast metabolizer you will burn more calories, or if you are a slow metabolizer, youre going to gain weight.

Thyroid function is often the first thing a physician checks when a patient is experiencing unexplained weight gain or loss, because improper hormone production affects so much more than a persons size. Thankfully, the disease is treatable, although not curable.

S You Can Take Today To Lose Weight And Boost Thyroid Function

“How You Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism”

There are several things YOU can do to optimize your thyroid function.

These steps should be taken in addition to the steps outlined above for best results.

Whenever I treat patients I often employ multiple therapies at once for the multiplicative effect that it provides on metabolism and thyroid function.

Follow these steps below to naturally boost your thyroid function and reset the metabolic conditions that favor T4 to reverse T3 conversion:

1. Optimize T4 to T3 Conversion

One of the easiest things you can start with right away is making sure that you have all of the right nutrients for proper thyroid conversion.

You can read more in this post about the 13+ nutrients required for proper thyroid creation, metabolism and conversion but I will go over the most important below.

The two primary nutrients involved in the conversion pathway are zinc and selenium.

It also happens that MANY patients are deficient in both of these nutrients due to a variety of reasons, which creates a great opportunity for most patients.

Let me go over the benefits of each of these…

Benefits of Zinc Supplementation on thyroid function:

  • Acts as an anti-inflammatory agent
  • Acts as an anti-oxidant in the body

How to supplement with Zinc and Selenium:

  • Zinc: Take up to 60mg per day
  • Selenium: Take up to 50mcg to 200mcg per day
  • Look for supplements which contain both Zinc and Selenium such as this one.

2. Optimize your Adrenal Function and Cortisol Levels

Cortisol and thyroid function are linked.

Get 10000 Steps Daily

Many experts recommend that everyone get 10,000 steps a day. Jennifer reported that she was able to finally lose weight once she started to get my 10,000 steps in! Does it have to be steps? Some experts say that 10,000 steps really means an increased activity level. Keep in mind that 10,000 steps equals about five miles of walking, or 45-60 minutes of activity every day.

Find The Right Thyroid Medication

Doctors often prescribe a synthetic thyroid hormone , Synthroid, Armour, or other T4 medication to treat patients with hypothyroidism. These types of medications act as thyroid hormone substitutes when your body fails to produce adequate thyroid hormone on its own. However, it will take time for your doctor to determine the right dosage of thyroid medication that works best for you.

For example, functional medicine physician Dr. Westin Childs only prescribes T4 medicine to patients sensitive to medications containing T3but the majority of his patients tend to respond better with a medication containing both T4 and T3 hormone.

Furthermore, a study released by the NIH revealed that many patients preferred taking DTE instead of L-T., gained more energy, and lost slightly more weight when they took a medication containing a combination of T4 and T3.

Its important for you to correct your hormone levels as quickly as possible in order to alleviate your symptoms and maximize weight loss. Once you find a thyroid medicine that is well tolerated and is of the right dosage, you can take your medicine according to your doctors recommendations.

Interestingly, a randomized double-blind crossover trial study reported in a 2010 Archives of Internal Medicine article strongly suggests that patients who took their thyroid medication at bedtime experienced improvement with their hormone levels and symptoms as opposed to when they took their medication in the morning. This was because:

Signs Your Thyroid Is Making You Gain Weight

Going up a couple of pant sizes could be caused by any of these ‘healthy’ habits secretly behind your weight gain, but it’s also one of the top symptoms of hypothyroidism. Also called an underactive thyroid, hypothyroidism is a condition in which your metabolism-running thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormones to meet your body’s needs.

Hypothyroidism is more common than you would believe the metabolic disease affects 4.6 percent of the U.S. population and millions of people are currently hypothyroid and don’t know it.

There are over a dozen common symptoms of hypothyroidism, and weight gain is one of the most prevalent.

“Patients with hypothyroidism will have a generalized slowing of their metabolism and reduction in their basal metabolic rate ,” explains Dr. Reshmi Srinath, assistant professor of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Bone Diseases at Mount Sinai.

“This can lead to changes in the way their body expends energy. With a lower metabolic rate, people may gain excess weight eating a similar diet. Some of this may be excess fat, but there may also be fluid retention.” So, even if you’re diligently dieting and working out, you may still gain weight if you have hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism: Why Weight Loss Is Tough

How To Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism

“When your thyroid is not functioning well, your metabolism goes down and you start to gain weight,” says Anne Wolf, RD, MS, a registered dietitian and researcher at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville. And once that weight has piled on, even 5 to 10 pounds can become very difficult to lose.

Additionally, Wolf notes that people with hypothyroidism tend to feel fatigued and just don’t have much energy, making exercise that much harder. With a lowered metabolism and a loss of the energy you need to exercise, the pounds can pile up quickly.

How Does My Thyroid Work

Pin by Diana Hansen on Exercise and Health

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped organ located in the front of your neck just under the voice box . Picture the middle of the butterflys body centered on your neck, with the wings hugging around your windpipe . The main job of the thyroid is to control your metabolism. Metabolism is the process that your body uses to transform food to energy your body uses to function. The thyroid creates the hormones T4 and T3 to control your metabolism. These hormones work throughout the body to tell the bodys cells how much energy to use. They control your body temperature and heart rate.

When your thyroid works correctly, its constantly making hormones, releasing them and then making new hormones to replace whats been used. This keeps your metabolism functioning and all of your bodys systems in check. The amount of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream is controlled by the pituitary gland, which is located in the center of the skull below the brain. When the pituitary gland senses either a lack of thyroid hormone or too much, it adjusts its own hormone and sends it to the thyroid to balance out the amounts.

If the amount of thyroid hormones is too high or too low , the entire body is impacted.
