I always keep my homemade dairy-free milk recipes down to the bare minimum. However, plain soy milk isnt really to everyones taste buds as its quite a strong flavor. To combat this, and in general just jazz up this soy milk recipe, you have a few flavor options.

The first thing to address is sweetness. I like to keep these recipes refined sugar-free and suggest using Medjool dates or maple syrup to sweeten your homemade soy milk naturally.

You can also add a variety of spices/ add-ins including homemade vanilla extract, cinnamon, cacao powder, etc.

Inhibition Of The Thyroid Hormone Actions

In addition to interfering with iodine entry into the thyroid gland, soy may also inhibit the action of thyroid hormones in the organs of the body. Some studies in humans have documented changes in thyroid function in response to soy, but the mechanism by which these changes occur is not clear. A 2016 study published in Public Health Nutrition, for example,concluded that the chances of having high TSH were quadrupled in people who ate two daily servings of soy foods versus those who didn’t eat any at all.

Most of the studies that have identified an association between soy and thyroid disease have shown that women are far more affected by this link than men are. The reasons for this different response between men and women is not clear.

Is there any reason to be really worried about soy? Or do people only tend to believe rumors and write off the use of soy without any clear scientific evidence?

For many years now, people, especially hypothyroidism patients have been avoiding the use of soy.

But is there really a reason to do so?

Upon binding to estrogens, the estrogen receptors and act as nuclear transcription factors. They show a 55% identity in their estrogen-binding domains and approximately 97% in the DNA-binding domains. Their endogenous and most potent ligand 17-estradiol is a lipophilic steroid hormone that can passively diffuse through the cell membrane. Upon binding of E2 to ER, the ligand-binding domain undergoes conformational changes, which lead to the release of heat shock proteins that inhibit the receptors action in the absence of hormones. The ER subsequently translocates into the nucleus . This facilitates the binding of cofactors, which promotes the interaction of ERs with their target genes. The ER makes use of a ligand-independent and a ligand-dependent transactivation function , which, upon ligand binding, recruit co-regulators of gene transcription to the activated receptor . Both receptors interact as either homodimers or / heterodimers with the same conserved estrogen response elements on the DNA .

Overall, only a few studies have explored the estrogenic activity of isoflavone conjugates. Further research is needed, especially in the case of sulfoglucuronides, which were recently shown to be the main metabolites in humans .

Most goitrogenic foods contain a lot of vitamins and minerals and provide a high nutritional value. Based on this fact, it is not advisable to completely exclude them from the diet.

The influence of goitrogenic foods on the patients with underactive thyroid function depends on how much of the thyroid gland is still involved in hormone production. If the thyroid gland is still partially functioning then the high consumption of goitrogenic foods could still affect its performance and decrease hormone output.

In the patients who have had their thyroid removed or are on a high dose of thyroid medication that practically completely substitutes the hormone production, eating goitrogenic foods should not make any difference. The thyroid hormones are not naturally produced and therefore the goitrogens should not be of any interference. The TSH has been normalized through prescription medication and patients are not at risk for developing a goiter.

For most cruciferous vegetables a relatively large quantity is necessary to affect the thyroid function. In addition, both isoflavones found in soy products and isothiocyanates contained in cruciferous vegetables are heat sensitive. Cooking will destroy about one third of these substances.

To avoid the negative properties of unfermented soy, it is wise to replace it with fermented soy product such as miso, tempeh and natto.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. Unless you’ve been diagnosed with celiac disease, it probably wonât affect your thyroid. Gluten can damage the small intestines of people with celiac disease. They can have other autoimmune disorders like Hashimotoâs disease and Graves’ disease . If you have celiac disease, a gluten-free diet may help prevent these thyroid diseases.


Recipes For Breakfast Lunch And Dinner

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup fresh or frozen pineapple
  • 2 tablespoons hemp hearts
  • 1 ¼ cup unsweetened or vanilla soy milk
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil for cooking

Sandwich Assembly

  • 8 slices of your favourite whole grain or sprouted grain bread, toasted
  • 2 vine-ripened tomatoes, sliced


  • 1In a resealable glass container, whisk up tamari with maple syrup, vinegar, garlic powder, cumin and paprika. Add tamari to the marinade, cover and let sit on the counter for at least 15 minutes. One hour is better. Overnight is great!
  • 2To cook, heat up avocado oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium. Cook tempeh until golden brown on both sides, 2-4 minutes per side.
  • 3To assemble sandwiches, spread toasted bread with mayo on both sides. Divide tempeh slices between sandwiches. Top with tomato slices and lettuce, and enjoy!

    Foods That Damage The Thyroid

    Wheat and other grains like rye, barley, millet and oats. There has been some evidence of the link between gluten-sensitivity and poor thyroid health function. If your thyroid isnt in great shape, youll probably be better off restricting your intake of gluten. Millet contains goitrogens, and should be avoided if youre concerned about your thyroid.

    Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, turnips, brussels sprouts and kale. These veggies are known for their thyroid-suppressing properties because they contain goitrogens. Thorough cooking deactivates these to some extent. You dont have to eliminate these vegetables from your diet, but it would be wise to reduce your intake if youre concerned about thyroid health.

    Most people who are eating well realize that they should avoid unhealthy beverages such as soda, energy drinks, and even cows milk. And while many people have no problem drinking water as their sole beverage, other people want more variety. And so I decided to put together an article which lists some other things besides water that you can drink. In addition, Ill also list a few beverages that are healthy, yet controversial, and Ill discuss if its fine to drink these for those who have a thyroid or autoimmune thyroid condition. Im not going to discuss in detail the beverages that you should avoid, although Ill list some of them towards the end of this article.

    Beverages Most People With Thyroid and Autoimmune Thyroid Conditions CAN Drink:

    Green tea. There are numerous health benefits associated with green tea, and I discussed many of them in an article I wrote entitled Green Tea and Thyroid Health. In the article I discussed how most of the health benefits of green tea is due to polyphenols, and the catechin EGCG has numerous health benefits, including preventing and calming down the autoimmune response. I drink green tea on a regular basis, and I commonly recommend it to my patients. However, those with adrenal problems should consume an organic decaffeinated green tea, and then once their adrenal health has improved they can switch to a caffeinated form of green tea .

    Second Generation Soy Products

    Another class of soy-based food exists which in Australia we call second generation soy food. This includes tofu sausages and burgers, soy breads, soy pasta and soymilk yoghurts and cheeses. It also includes products that contain soy or soy-based ingredients such as lecithin which can be found in some chocolate and baked goods.

    Soy And Thyroid Levels:

    It is believed that soy, in general, is not harmful. However, in large quantities, it poses threats to thyroid. Here arises a question, how much is too much? This varies according to age. Children must not have any soy consumption. For adults, 30 mg per day consumption of soy is believed to have negative impact on thyroid functioning . But do keep in mind that every individual differs from the other and every person has systems that can respond differently. So, its better to consult your primary physician before taking any step.

    Should Patients With Hypothyroidism Use Soy In Their Diet

    When you are struggling with thyroid issues, it can be quite tricky to figure out which foods you should eat and which you should definitely avoid.

    For example, consuming fresh fruits and vegetables is more than recommended, on the other hand, consuming dairy products and gluten is considered to only do you harm, by increasing the already present inflammation in your thyroid gland and worsening your present symptoms.

    So, what happens with soy? Should you forget about its existence altogether or should you continue using it as before?

    Patients with hypothyroidism are usually advised against the use of soy and any soy products as a part of their diet.

    If soy lowers the TSH levels in your body, and with that, causes your already low thyroid hormone levels to continue reducing no positive effects are expected to happen. In fact, what it is expected to happen, is your symptoms getting worse, and with that, your overall health.

    Soy can also prevent your thyroid hormone replacement medication from getting absorbed in your body. Soy, along with calcium, iron, gluten, and lactose, is one of the many compounds able to interfere with the absorption of your thyroid hormone replacement medication and cause you to require a larger amount of the medication over time.

    Thyroid And Diet: A Note About Taking Thyroid Hormone

    Can I eat soy if I have an underactive thyroid?

    “If you have hypothyroidism, you dont have a functioning thyroid,” says Skugor. In order to reverse hypothyroidism, he says, you would basically need to grow a new thyroid, and no diet can do that. “The only diet that can cure hypothyroidism is the one that contains thyroid hormones,” he adds, which can only be taken in the form of a daily thyroid supplement.

    Though certain foods cant reverse a thyroid problem, it’s important to know about foods and medications that can potentially interact with your thyroid medication. For people with hypothyroidism who take thyroid hormone every day, foods or supplements containing calcium, iron, and soy, and even medications like cholesterol drugs, can keep the hormone from being properly absorbed. Thats why its usually best to take your thyroid medication on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. Then wait at least an hour, or as directed by your doctor, before eating those foods or taking any supplements or other meds. Or, wait until at least two hours after consuming those foods or medications before taking your thyroid medication.

    There’s a lot of hype surrounding food, diet, and nutrition to manage thyroid function. But the best thing you can do to manage your thyroid problem is to follow your doctor’s recommendations on medication, treatment options, diet, and exercise. When your thyroid symptoms subside, your body is telling you that it has what it needs to be healthy.

    Is Oatmeal Ok For Hypothyroidism

    One new thing to be aware of is oats. Even if you eat all organic, many oat-based foods such as cereal, granola, instant oats, and bars contain glyphosate, the toxic weed-killer in Roundup. Most oats are also contaminated with gluten and people with Hashimotos low thyroid should religiously avoid gluten.

    Large Amounts Of Raw Cruciferous Vegetables

    Cruciferous vegetables include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts and others. You can still eat these vegetables, but dont go overboard and dont consume them raw. These vegetables contain substances called goitrogens. They are compounds that can inhibit the absorption of iodine by your thyroid gland. Iodine is a critical component in the manufacture of thyroid hormones.

    If you dont have sufficient iodine in your diet, you simply wont be able to make enough thyroid hormones. The problem is, most people are already iodine deficient because they arent eating enough foods rich in this mineral. Eating a lot of goitrogen containing vegetables just makes this situation even worse.

    Iodine is found mainly in seaweed and wild seafood . Many people dont get enough of these foods in their diet. Thyroid Health capsules contain iodine, plus selenium, vitamin D and zinc, which are all helpful for healthy thyroid gland function.

    May Lower Blood Pressure

    Soybeans and foods made from them are generally rich in arginine, an amino acid believed to help regulate blood pressure levels .

    Soybeans are also rich in isoflavones, another compound believed to offer blood-pressure-lowering benefits.

    In one study, eating 1/2 cup of soy nuts daily was found to reduce diastolic blood pressure by around 8% in some, but not all women .

    Other studies link daily intakes of 65153 mg of soy isoflavones to blood pressure reductions of 36 mm Hg in people with high blood pressure .

    However, its unclear whether these small blood-pressure-lowering benefits apply to people with normal and elevated blood pressure levels.

    Some studies suggest both may benefit, while others suggest only people with high blood pressure would experience this effect .

    Clearly, more research is needed on this topic, but for the time being, the blood-pressure-lowering effects of soy, if any, appear to be very small.

    What Are The Dangers Of Soy

    Should ALL Soy Be Avoided If you Have Thyroid Problems?

    In some animal studies, rodents that were exposed to high doses of compounds found in soy called isoflavones showed an increased risk of breast cancer. This is thought to be because the isoflavones in soy can act like estrogen in the body, and increased estrogen has been linked to certain types of breast cancer.

    May Reduce The Risk Of Breast Cancer

    Diets rich in soy have also been linked to a lower risk of certain cancers.

    For instance, one recent review of 12 studies suggests that women with high soy intakes prior to receiving a cancer diagnosis may be at a 16% lower risk of dying from the condition, compared with those with the lowest intakes .

    High soy intakes pre- and post-diagnosis may also reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence in postmenopausal women by up to 28%. However, this study suggests that premenopausal women may not experience the same benefit .

    On the other hand, another study suggests that both pre- and postmenopausal women eating soy-rich diets may benefit from a 27% lower risk of cancer.

    However, the protective benefits of soy were only observed in Asian women, while Western women appeared to experience little benefit .

    Based on these studies, a proportion of women eating soy-rich diets may benefit from a lower risk of breast cancer. Still, more studies are needed to determine which women may benefit the most.
