Constipation Or Changes To Bowel Movements
Thyroid hormone is also directly involved in the kinetics of your bowels.;
Put in more basic terms this means that thyroid hormone helps your gastrointestinal tract move normally.;
Your GI tract, whether you realize this or not, is always moving in a slow rhythmic contraction known as peristalsis.
Thyroid hormone helps this peristaltic motion and allows for proper transit time, proper nutrient absorption and normal bowel movements.;
The low thyroid state slows down the rate at which your bowels move and increases the risk for developing overgrowth conditions such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and small intestinal fungal overgrowth.
The connection between SIBO and hypothyroidism is quite strong and as many as 50% of hypothyroid patients have been shown to test positive for SIBO .
Hypothyroidism also directly results in constipation due to these effects.;
And remember, persistent symptoms of constipation should go away with thyroid hormone replacement!
How Do Doctors Diagnose Hyperthyroidism
Your doctor will take a medical history and do a physical exam, but also will need to do some tests to confirm a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. Many symptoms of hyperthyroidism are the same as those of other diseases, so doctors usually cant diagnose hyperthyroidism based on symptoms alone.
Because hypothyroidism can cause fertility problems, women who have trouble getting pregnant often get tested for thyroid problems.
Your doctor may use several blood tests to confirm a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism and find its cause. Imaging tests, such as a thyroid scan, can also help diagnose and find the cause of hyperthyroidism. Learn more about thyroid tests and what the results mean.
Crushing Fatigue Or Low Energy Levels
Low energy levels results from the same mechanism that regulates your metabolism:
Energy production in the mitochondria.
ATP is the energy currency in your body and it is created from your mitochondria.
Adequate ATP is required for normal functions like muscle contraction, neurologic impulses, etc.;
This isn’t the only way that hypothyroidism causes low energy, however.
In addition to influencing your energy production thyroid hormone also impacts other hormones that regulate energy levels like cortisol.
Low thyroid hormone also causes issues with cortisol which can lower energy levels as well .

What Causes Thyroid Nodules
The most common cause of a thyroid nodule in kids is actually a “pseudonodule” or “fake nodule.” This is when inflammation of the gland makes the thyroid swell in one place. This inflammation might look like a nodule, but there isn’t really any nodule at all.
The next most common type of thyroid nodule is a cyst, which usually happens when normal fluid pockets in the thyroid get bigger. These types of nodules are always benign , but may continue to grow over time.
Thyroid nodules that are due to growths are common in adults but less common in kids. Most thyroid nodules are benign and doctors don’t always know why they happen.
Kids and teens with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis have a higher risk of thyroid nodules. As with goiters, a lack of iodine can cause thyroid nodules.
What Happens After This
Once you have had these tests you thenhave to wait for a short period of time around a week or sountil your results are ready.
We realise that this is a stressfuland nerve wracking time which can be eased by talking to someone closeto you. It may help to talk to a close friend or member of your familyor if you prefer, a counsellor or someone at a cancer support group.

How Thyroid Enlargement Can Affect Swallowing
Swallowing is a complex process which involves the brain, several muscles, nerves and valves, and the esophagus working together in 3 phases. In phase I, the food is held in the mouth by the tongue and palate. During phase II, the brains decision to swallow triggers a series of reflexes, simultaneously sending the food into the pharynx, opening a muscular valve to allow food into the esophagus, and closing the trachea to keep food from going into the airways. In phase III, the food enters into the esophagus which contracts, opening a valve and propelling the food into the stomach.
When the thyroid gland becomes significantly enlarged, the goiter can begin to compress the esophagus , leading to dysphagia, as well as breathing difficulties in some cases. Patients with compressing symptoms often feel a sensation of food stuck in the throat or choking. Studies involving patients with compressing symptoms showed that nodule size and lobe size directly affected the ability to swallow.
Overview Of The Thyroid Gland
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland found in the lower neck, just beneath the Adamâs apple. The hormones this gland releases control the bodyâs growth and metabolism. They affect processes like heart rate, digestion and temperature. Thyroid hormones are also essential for healthy mental and physical development.
When the levels of thyroid hormone are too high, symptoms of hyperthyroidism may present, such as increased heart rate, weight loss and anxiety. Conversely, when the levels are abnormally low, there may be symptoms of hypothyroidism , like fatigue, weight gain and depression.

Is Burning Mouth Syndrome Caused By Your Thyroid
There is a long list of conditions that could cause the symptoms associated with BMS, including some related to your thyroid . In fact, the thyroid has been linked to a number of oral problems, not just burning mouth syndrome. Exactly what issues you encounter seems to depend on the nature of your thyroid problem, so not everyone with a thyroid issue will develop BMS.
One issue related to both BMS and the thyroid is dry mouth . Those with thyroid disease may suffer from decreased saliva production, which itself could cause burning mouth syndrome or a similarly unpleasant oral condition. Regardless of whether your burning mouth syndrome is caused by your thyroid directly or as a complication caused by thyroid-related dry mouth, treating the underlying thyroid issue should address your BMS.
If you have additional oral morbidities along with your burning mouth syndrome especially enlargement of the tongue, mouth sores, persistent gum disease, enlarged thyroid tissue in the throat, accelerated cavity development, or osteoporosis of the jawbone be sure to mention them to your doctor or specialist, since they could point to your thyroid as the reason for your burning mouth syndrome .
When To See Your Doctor
If you have symptoms of thyroid disease, consult with your doctor, who will do a thorough physical exam, ask you details about your symptoms, and do a blood test to check your thyroid levels. Fortunately, in most cases, both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can be effectively treated.

Thyroid storm;is a rare but very serious, potentially life-threatening condition that occurs in people with untreated hyperthyroidism. It may be triggered by a stressful event like surgery, trauma, or infection. Thyroid storm is characterized by exaggerated symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as a very fast heart rate, high fever, diarrhea, agitation, delirium, and/or decreased consciousness.
Myxedema coma, on the other hand, is a life-threatening emergency that can result from hypothyroidism.

What Causes Thyroid Cancer
In most cases, the cause of thyroid cancer is unknown. However, certain things can increase your chances of developing the condition.
Risk factors for thyroid cancer include:
- having a benign thyroid condition
- having a family history of thyroid cancer
- having a bowel condition known as familial adenomatous polyposis
- acromegaly; a rare condition where the body produces too much growth hormone
- having a previous benign breast condition
- weight and height

What Does Thyroid Pain Feel Like
The pain is generally not localized and can radiate to mouth, jaw, chin, beyond the superior mediastinum to the chest. Sometimes, the pain can spread to the jaw or ears.
The pain often gets worsened on swallowing and can be associated with tenderness on palpating the thyroid gland.
Characteristics of thyroid pain are:
- It may look like an ache with tenderness to touch and swelling of the thyroid gland
- Thyroid pain can cause swelling
- It is associated with hoarseness of the throat or sore throat
- The pain worsens on touching or swallowing
- Thyroid pain in neck or throat along with swelling around the thyroid gland
- The thyroid gland may remain painful and swollen for weeks and in some cases for months. It all depends on the underlying cause of the pain.

- What to do about it?
A thyroid nodule that causes any symptom of swallowing will need to be removed with surgery. The vast majority of these are simply large, benign goiters and only very few are cancerous. But like almost all thyroid nodules that cause symptoms, surgery will be necessary for this group. Many of these goiters won’t need a biopsy because it can be hard to get all the way to the back of the neck with a needle. Almost all of these will need a CAT scan to give the surgeon a better understanding of how big the goiter is and where it goes.
What Is A Swollen Thyroid
Anatomically speaking, the thyroid gland, located at the front portion of the neck, is part of the endocrine body system. A swollen thyroid or medically termed as goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Furthermore,; people who suffer from a swollen thyroid are occasionally battling against hypothyroidism. However, there are actually a lot of reasons which cause the thyroid gland to swell. These reasons will be explained later in the discussion on the causes for a swollen thyroid.

Signs And Symptoms Of Thyroid Pain
Thyroid pain may vary in intensity. Some people experience a mild discomfort around the thyroid gland, others describe it as tightness particularly when swallowing or a dull ache throughout the thyroid gland.
Common symptoms of the thyroid pain are:
- the pain usually exacerbates when palpated
- in case of an acute thyroid pain, persistent pain can be an indicator of major thyroid problem requiring medical or surgical intervention
- a neck lump or mass may appear in the neck if the pain is due to goiter and cause severe thyroid pain in neck
- discomfort or pain when swallowing
- hoarse voice
- most of thyroid nodules causing severe pain tend to be malignant. Therefore, it is important to be careful when there is swelling or pain of the thyroid gland.
Thyroid Symptoms Of The Mouth
The list of symptoms linked to thyroid disease is long. Weight fluctuations, hair loss, vision changes, skin problems, memory problems, sensitivity to hot and cold and menstrual disruption are just a few of the symptoms associated with thyroid problems. One often-overlooked set of symptoms is the problems thyroid disease can cause in the mouth. Thyroid hormone imbalance is behind several mouth and dental health issues.
Burning Mouth Syndrome
Some thyroid patients, especially women in middle age or in menopause, develop Burning Mouth Syndrome, or BMS. As the name suggests, BMS is characterized by a burning sensation on the tongue or the lips or involving the whole mouth. It may be accompanied by a bitter or metallic taste. Treatment for thyroid disease can improve the symptoms of BMS.
Special Concerns: Hypothyroidism
Patients with hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, may experience macroglossia , gum disease, slow healing of mouth sores and, in children, delayed tooth growth. Problems with hypoglycemia are common in patients with underactive thyroids; hypoglycemia can cause an increased risk of mouth and tooth infections.

How Is Goiter Diagnosed
Several tests can be used to diagnose and evaluate goiter, including the following:
- Physical exam: Your doctor may be able to tell if the thyroid gland has grown by feeling the neck area for nodules and signs of tenderness.
- Hormone test: This blood test measures thyroid hormone levels, which tell if the thyroid is working properly.
- Antibody test: This blood test looks for certain antibodies that are produced in some forms of goiter. An antibody is a protein made by white blood cells. Antibodies help defend against invaders that cause disease or infection in the body.
- Ultrasound of the thyroid: Ultrasound is a procedure that sends high-frequency sound waves through body tissues. The echoes are recorded and transformed into video or photos. Ultrasound of the thyroid reveals the gland’s size and finds nodules.
- Thyroid scan: This imaging test provides information on the size and function of the gland. In this test, a small amount of radioactive material is injected into a vein to produce an image of the thyroid on a computer screen. This test is not ordered very often, since it is only useful in certain circumstances.
- CT scan or MRI of the thyroid: If the goiter is very large or spreads into the chest, a CT scan or MRI is used to measure the size and spread of the goiter.
Are There Any More Tests
Your specialist will send you for furthertests if the initial tests show that you have cancer of the thyroid.These additional procedures are designed to ascertain the extent orstageof the cancer and how far it has spread.
They will also include checking yourlymph nodes to see if these are enlarged which may indicate that thecancer has spread to these glands.
These tests include:

What Your Tongue Tells You About Your Thyroid
When Dr. Wiggy;appeared on The Doctors TV Show, here is what he had to say about the tongue that caught my attention, Sometimes the tongue gets too big for the mouth and actually pushes up against the sides of the teeth and that can suggest the tongue is too large because there are too many toxins. A lot of times that is from having low thyroid.;
I immediately went to the mirror and for the first time in my life looked at my tongue, not just looked at it but really;examined;it closely. I discovered that my tongue was in fact;enlarged. I had 2 out of the 4 tongue issues Dr. Wiggy;describes below. I had no idea;my tongue was so unhealthy looking.
How about you? Have you taken a good look at your tongue?
Cold Hands/feet Or Lower Than Normal Body Temperature
Your body produces heat by creating and burning energy.
ATP production and mitochondria are involved in this process.
The more energy that you produce and consume the higher your body temperature will be.
Low states of thyroid hormone reduce the total amount of energy that you produce which reduces the heat that you produces which results in low body temperature.
This process, known as thermogenesis , is also closely related to your metabolism.
The higher your basal metabolic rate the more energy that you will burn at rest: breathing, eating, thinking, sleeping, etc.;
The more energy you burn doing these basic tasks the higher your metabolism will be and the easier it will be to lose weight.
Your metabolism represents over 90% of the calories you burn and that is why it is the single most important factor for weight loss.
