Can Gluten Free Diet Help Thyroid

Adequate Nutrition Is Crucial For A Healthy Thyroid

Does a gluten-free diet help Hashimoto’s?

The diagram below illustrates some very important nutrient-thyroid relationships. Vitamins and minerals help drive the chemistry behind the production of the different thyroid hormones. They also help these hormones communicate with the DNA and other organs to improve and regulate metabolism.

The following is a list of nutrients that your doctor should measure when evaluating your thyroid:

Myth: If You Have A Lump On Your Neck You Definitely Have A Thyroid Problem

Fact: A lump on the neck is not necessarily a goiter . While the thyroid is the most common thing that can enlarge in your neck, there are a lot of other things in the neck besides the thyroid, says Dr. Fink.

Other causes of a neck lump could be a swollen lymph node or cyst. Either way, Dr. Fink recommends you get any neck lumps checked out by your doctor, who will evaluate the problem with a quick exam and order up ultrasounds or CT scans, if necessary.

Testing For Celiac Disease

The risk for celiac disease increases if you have a family history of the disease, European ancestry, and/or a personal history of other autoimmune disorders.

There are several options to diagnose celiac disease. However, current testing is far from perfect, with blood-screening tests often coming back negative. Additionally, a person must be eating gluten to test positive for celiac disease! These are the current blood-screening tests available:

  • The Tissue Transglutaminase Antibodies test: This blood test is often used to diagnose celiac disease. If you are currently on a gluten free diet, a gluten challenge is often recommended prior to taking this test, to allow any antibodies to appear in your bloodstream. Unfortunately, this test may results in false negatives and false positives.
  • IgA Endomysial antibody test: This test is not as sensitive as the tTG-IgA test. Its usually used for patients that are difficult to diagnose, but about 5-10 percent of those with celiac disease do not have a positive EMA test.
  • Total serum IgA test: This test checks for IgA deficiency, which is often associated with celiac disease. IgA deficiency can cause false negatives on tTG-IgA or EMA tests.
  • Deamidated gliadin peptide test: This test can be used to further screen for celiac disease in those who test negative for both tTg and EMA antibodies, as well as in those with IgA deficiency.

How Progesterone Can Help With Celiac Disease And Gluten Intolerance

In almost all aspects, estrogen and progesterone have opposite effects.

As mentioned, estrogen increases transglutaminase activity, which can intensify your negative reaction to gluten.

Studies show that yet again, progesterone opposes estrogen in this case, by lowering or normalizing transglutaminase activity.

Progesterone treatment decreased the enzyme activity.

So, while estrogen can worsen your reaction to gluten, progesterone can help protect you by lessening the reaction.

This is also one way in which progesterone can help improve digestion and improve your tolerance to dairy.

The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland on the front of your throat.

TSH instructs it to produces two different thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine . These are necessary to send instructions to every single cell in your body. Without these hormones, many metabolic processes break down.

An underactive thyroid refers to when the gland doesnt produce enough thyroid hormone. Hashimotos Thyroiditis is by far the most common form of hypothyroidism in the Western world.

In almost all cases hypothyroidism is the result of inadequate T4 production, rather than inadequate T3. Conventional diagnosis relies on TSH and T4 blood tests, however theres good reason to believe those tests alone are inadequate.

Left untreated, an underactive thyroid will lead to a host of health problems including weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, poor memory and feeling unusually cold.

Conventional treatment for an underactive thyroid is with the hormone levothyroxine . It works by replacing the T4 that is not being naturally produced, and is the most effective treatment for this condition.

Foods That Contribute To Goiter

There are a number of foods that can impact thyroid hormone production. These are typically referred to as goitrogenic foods, because when eaten in large quantities, they can cause a goiter to form. The following is a list of foods that have these properties. Keep in mind that just because a food is goitrogenic doesnt mean you cannot eat it. Cooking them reduces this effect by as much as 70-80%.

  • Soy
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Chemical immune response testing
  • Heavy metal testing
  • Mold and yeast overgrowth testing
  • Mycotoxin testing mycotoxins are chemicals produced by molds. This testing is not the same as measuring for mold allergies.
  • Also consider measuring gut bacteria as a deficiency contributes to nutritional deficiency and immune dysfunction.

    Out of 100 people, one or two have celiac disease. To develop it, people first need to be genetically at risk. Then, the theory is, comes the double hit: an infection, illness or other health condition that triggers the immune system to start responding inappropriately to gluten. Testing for celiac disease starts with a blood test for the enzyme IgA tissue transglutaminase and a few other indicators while still eating gluten. If the results are positive, then an intestinal biopsy can confirm the diagnosis. Testing while gluten-free can lead to false results.

    Fact:The symptoms of an underactive thyroid are very non-specific, meaning they can present with many different conditions, says Dr. Fink. I always tell patients Im looking at them as a whole person, not as just their thyroid gland, even though they may come to me saying they have a thyroid problem.”

    For female patients, Dr. Fink first looks at the menstrual cycle, which often causes symptoms similar to those found in thyroid disease patients. Symptoms like fatigue and weight gain can come up with a thyroid condition or with a menstrual cycle, says Dr. Fink. One good trick is to find a good app to track your period and that can help us sometimes understand their bodies better and the daily fluctuation of hormones. If your period isnt to blame for tiredness or a few extra pounds, Dr. Fink says a TSH test is the next step in diagnosing a true thyroid condition.

    Higher Risk Of Other Autoimmune Diseases

    As is typical with autoimmune disorders, people with celiac disease and/or AITD are also more likely to develop other autoimmune conditions, like type 1 diabetes, Addison’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, and autoimmune hepatitis. The older you get, the more this risk increases.

    Shrinking Nodules A Success Story

    Id like to share the success story of a client who was able to reverse her nodules with nutrition, supplements and treating Blastocystis hominis. Her thyroid antibodies are also now in the remission range . This 60 year old woman with asthma, Hashimotos and past exposure to Chernobyl had consecutive ultrasounds on an annual basis to monitor her thyroid nodule. As of 2018, this person still does not have any nodules on her thyroid ultrasound. She did, however, have a flare in asthma and thyroid antibodies in 2017 after having dairy. As a side note, I think the significant dairy reactivity may be due to the Chernobyl exposure and the radioactive toxins concentrated in the milk from cows in Eastern Europe. My theory is that this exposure made people highly sensitized to dairy proteins.

    Here are the results from her first test:

    11/5/10: First ultrasound

    FINDINGS: There is a 6 x 3 x 4 mm hypoechoic solid nodule in the right lobe with multiple small but discrete hyperechoic foci likely due to calcifications. There is a 2 x 4 x 2 mm partly calcified solid nodule in the left lobe that demonstrates shadowing.IMPRESSION: There are bilateral calcified thyroid nodules. The nodules measure under 1 cm in diameter. The nodules are nonspecific in appearance and results should be correlated with clinical and laboratory data. Follow up ultrasound needed in 12 months due to the calcifications.

    Hormones are the messengers and regulators of the body, determining the function of every cell. For any hormone to be used in the body it has to be attached to its corresponding receptor site, which is found on a cell’s membrane.

    Think of the receptor site as a special lock that can only be unlocked by that specific hormone. For example, a thyroid receptor site can only be unlocked by a thyroid hormone and nothing else.

    Thyroid: The Queen Of All Hormones

    There are only two types of receptor sites that are found in every cell of the body, thyroid and vitamin d receptor sites. To put it simply, every cell of our body depends on the thyroid, and it impacts your health in many different ways. If your thyroid hormones don’t function healthily, neither will the rest of your body.

    Can Gluten Cause Thyroid Disease

    We know that thyroid disease is multifactorial, and has several different causes and triggers but can gluten cause thyroid problems? Many people receive a hypo or hyperthyroid diagnosis as a result of having a blood test performed during a doctor visit. The typical standard of care is for the doctor to then prescribe lifelong medication to treat the condition.

    It is extremely uncommon for a doctor to discuss the different triggers of thyroid disease.

    Such is the case with thyroid disease and gluten sensitivity. Before breaking down the connection between gluten and thyroid damage, lets break down some important thyroid concepts for you first.

    Gluten Intolerance: Fact Or Fiction

    Celiac Disease is only diagnosed by the presence of IgA antibodies to the gluten protein or the transglutaminase-2 enzyme.

    General gluten sensitivity isnt widely recognized in the medical community and theres no test for it, so theres still debate as to whether it truly exists or not.

    Yet, keep in mind that there are many different parts of gluten proteins, immune mediators, and transglutaminase enzymes, which could exhibit similar reactions.

    So, while you may not be diagnosed with celiac disease, you can still be sensitive to gluten due to these other potential cross reactions.

    As you can see, its a lot more complicated than many would have you believe.

    And as mentioned earlier as a thyroid sufferer, you tend to overproduce estrogen, which can increase your sensitivity to gluten and again, increase inflammation in your bodys cells and tissues.

    So, how can you help protect yourself from gluten, aside from adhering to a strict gluten-free diet?

    Nutrient Needs For Proper Thyroid Function

    There are a number of factors that play into the development of thyroid disease, but first lets focus on the often overlooked nutrient needs of the thyroid gland.

    In order to regulate and make thyroid hormone, the body needs certain nutrients. These nutrients should be provided by the diet, but a healthy gut flora also plays a role in delivering nutrients for thyroid function.

    • First, the body needs protein, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin B12 to produce TSH
    • Next, once TSH is produced, the brain sends a signal to your thyroid to make T4, which is the Thyroxine made up of the amino acid Tyrosine plus four molecules of iodine attached to it. For this, it needs the help of Vitamin C, B2 and B3.
    • T4 is the inactive form of thyroid hormone, and so the body needs to convert it to T3. To make this conversion, the body needs the help of the nutrients selenium and iron.
    • T3 is the active form of the hormone, but to get it inside of the cells in the body to help regulate our metabolism, the body needs vitamins A and D and omega-3 fatty acids.

    The absence of any of these nutrients can suppress thyroid function and disrupt thyroid pathways, causing the thyroid to not work efficiently. Gluten induced malnutrition is one of the major mechanisms of thyroid hormone dysfunction.

    Fact: Thyroid-related symptoms can be present in many different medical conditions, says Dorothy Fink, MD, endocrinologist and assistant professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. Common symptoms include extreme fatigue , brain fog, anxiety, heart palpitations, dry skin, and high blood pressure. Dr. Fink says thyroid disorders are often misdiagnosed in women in particular because other female-specific, hormone-related conditions can have similar symptoms, including premenstrual dysphoric disorder, perimenopause, or menopause.     Why An Elimination Diet Is The Best Gluten Sensitivity Test

    If you cant afford food sensitivity testing, I have some good news for you. There is a test you can do thats absolutely free, but it does require more work and paying attention. The elimination diet is still considered the gold standard for food sensitivity testing. Your body will always tell you which foods do not agree with it, but only if you listen to it very carefully.

    Why are food sensitivities so difficult to pinpoint? One reason is because we keep eating the foods that our body is sensitive to. For me, I ate dairy and bread every day, never connecting those foods to my long list of symptoms. When you eat a particular food on a daily basis, it is difficult to connect that food to any symptoms you are having.

    You might have joint pain, bloating, and acid reflux every day, but how would you ever connect that to the dairy you have always had?

    As you continue to consume the food you are sensitive to, your body becomes depleted in its ability to protect itself from the antigenic food. The reactions become less specific and more chronic. Additionally, your body will become sensitive to more and more things.
