Thyroid And Low Blood Sugar
When the term blood sugar comes to mind, we usually think of high blood glucose levels, insulin resistance, and other problems.
While these issues are common and pose a major threat to our wellbeing, it is also important to bear in mind low blood sugar isnt good for your health either.
Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is a potentially dangerous condition indicated by insufficient glucose amounts for production of energy in the bodys cells.
Main causes of low blood sugar are certain medications, tumors, endocrine disorders, and some medical conditions.
Studies reveal that hypothyroidism is associated with different hormonal, biochemical, and nervous system abnormalities which have the potential to contribute to hypoglycemia.
For example, hypothyroidism is related to low growth hormone and cortisol responses to insulin-induced hypoglycemia, thus blocking the proper counter regulatory protection.
When blood sugar levels decrease, the adrenal glands address this issue by secreting hormone cortisol. Then, the hormone sends a signal which tells the liver to produce higher amounts of blood sugar, thus bringing the levels of glucose to normal.
The problem occurs when the repeated release of cortisol in patients with hypoglycemia suppresses pituitary function. The thyroid gland cant operate properly without adequate pituitary functioning.
Evidence suggests that dysfunction of pituitary could be a direct consequence of hypothyroidism, rather than a cause of thyroid dysfunction.
High Blood Pressure Statistics
The CDC also states that high blood pressure affects an estimated 75 million American adults, which is 29% of the American population. Thats one in every three American adults.
High blood pressure greatly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, the first and third leading causes of death in the United States. This is why it is so important to get your blood pressure checked regularly.
According to the American Heart Association, when high blood pressure is left untreated, it can cause the following:
- Heart disease or heart failure
- Peripheral artery disease
Angina Definition: Chest discomfort or pain from the condition where the heart muscles dont obtain the right oxygen-rich blood volume
As you can see, the dangers of prolonged and/or untreated high blood pressure can cause an array of health problems.
In addition, health conditions, such as overt hypothyroidism , can also cause high blood pressure. When this occurs, it is referred to as secondary hypertension.
How can thyroid conditions affect your blood pressure? We will explain more about high blood pressure and hypothyroidism in the following sections.

Why You Need To Watch Out For Weight Changes
Your dose of thyroid hormone is based on your weight, although your doctor has to keep an eye on your blood levels because some people have problems with absorption.
Be sure to report a weight gain or loss of 10% or more to your doctor right away, advises Dr. Skugor. This will help you avoid overtreatment or undertreatment.
At the onset of menopause, its frequently necessary to decrease the thyroid dose to avoid overtreatment.
Yet even when youre on the right dose for your weight, you may be getting more thyroid hormone than your body needs. Overtreatment places you at risk of developing heart arrhythmias and osteoporosis, a low bone-mass disorder that leads to easy fracturing. One study even reported that overtreatment is associated with increased cardiovascular risk.
Its important to keep your doctor in the loop of any other changes like starting new medication or feeling your symptoms return or get worse.
Synthroid With Vitamin D
lower levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a role in how your immune system functions. And because some thyroid conditions are related to your immune system, people with these conditions may have low vitamin D levels.
If you have hypothyroidism, your doctor may order blood tests to check your vitamin D level. And your doctor may recommend that you take a vitamin D supplement if your levels are low. For some people, increasing vitamin D level may help symptoms of their thyroid condition.

Why Is Metoprolol Popular
Metoprolol is the most popular beta blocker on SingleCare by a landslide. Its the most well studied for heart failure and has the dual indication as being for both heart failure and blood pressure, so it is the one that is most often prescribed, Dr. Shill explains.

Providers sometimes use radioactive iodine to treat hyperthyroidism. Pregnant women shouldnt take this medicine because it can cause thyroid problems in the baby.
Antithyroid medicines are safe to take at low doses while youre breastfeeding.

How It Works For Tsh Suppression
TSH stimulates your thyroid to make more thyroid hormones. In addition, TSH is responsible for cell growth in your thyroid gland. This includes growth of both healthy cells and cancerous cells in the gland.
Normally, when your thyroid hormone levels are low, your body makes TSH. This signals your thyroid to make more thyroid hormones. However, if youre taking Synthroid, your thyroid hormone levels wont be low. So your body wont need to make TSH, and your TSH level will be lower than usual.
Alternatives To Armour Thyroid
Natural desiccated thyroid is the original treatment for hypothyroidism. It has been used for more than a century.
In the mid-1900s, a synthetic version of thyroxine one of the two primary hormones the thyroid gland produces was developed. This synthetic form of thyroxine is called levothyroxine or l-thyroxine.
Even though natural desiccated thyroid contains two key thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine as well as other elements found in an organic thyroid gland, levothyroxine has become the preferred treatment. Brand names for levothyroxine include:

Thyroid Hormone Inhibits The Estrogen Producing Aromatase Enzyme
Thyroid hormone works positively with progesterone in a number of ways.
For starters, it helps increase natural progesterone production.
But it also helps by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which can chronically overproduce estrogen within your fat cells.
Increased aromatase is commonly found in hypothyroidism and increases with age. It has also long been associated with breast cancer.
Aromatase inhibitors are often prescribed to breast cancer patients, to help prevent the recurrence of the cancer.
Thyroid hormone and progesterone both inhibit aromatase as well and can provide the same preventative effects.
I use both with my clients, which you can find on our page of Thyroid Supplements.

Hypothyroidism: The Cardiac Connection
Hypothyroidism can affect the heart and circulatory system in a number of ways. Insufficient thyroid hormone slows your heart rate. Because it also makes the arteries less elastic, blood pressure rises in order to circulate blood around the body. Elevated cholesterol levels, which contribute to narrowed, hardened arteries, are another possible consequence of low thyroid levels.
Another noncardiac symptommuscle achesmay also be relevant. Muscle aches can be a symptom of hypothyroidism as well as a side effect of cholesterol-lowering statin medications, a condition known as statin-related myalgia. In fact, research suggests that hypothyroidism is more common in people who cant tolerate statins. Some experts believe that treating hypothyroidism may relieve or decrease statin-related myalgia, says Dr. Garber.

How Too Much Thyroid Hormone Affects Your Heart
An overactive thyroid gland hyperthyroidism can cause the irregular heartbeat of atrial fibrillation.
The thyroid, which is a small gland in your neck, could throw your heart out of its natural rhythm and increase your risk for heart failure or stroke. This is because thyroid hormone has a profound effect on the hearts function and may cause atrial fibrillation.
About 2.7 million Americans have atrial fibrillation, according to the American Heart Association . It’s the most common arrhythmia, which is an irregular heartbeat that can have many different causes.
Diagnosing and treating atrial fibrillation is important because the condition can cause blood to pool in the heart and form a dangerous clot, increasing stroke risk fivefold, according to the National Stroke Association.
But to get the best treatment, you need to know the origins of this condition. Atrial fibrillation can be caused by several factors, including underlying heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and older age, according to the AHA.
Side Effects In Children
Children taking Synthroid may have different side effects than do adults taking the drug. For example, some children taking Synthroid have had pseudotumor cerebri . This condition may cause headaches, nausea, and vomiting.
In addition, some children taking Synthroid have had slipped capital femoral epiphysis. This disorder may cause limping or pain in the area thats affected.
This hip condition only occurs in children whose bones are still growing. However, its important to note that having decreased thyroid hormone levels, which Synthroid is used to treat, may also increase the risk of this hip disorder.
Also, certain bone growth problems may occur in infants and children who take too much Synthroid. In this case, an infants skull may become hardened too quickly, causing increased pressure on their brain. And the growth of their skull may also be affected. Other bones in children taking too much Synthroid may also be unable to grow properly. This can lead to growth problems and decreased height.
If you have questions about side effects of Synthroid in a child using the drug, talk with your childs doctor. Theyll discuss with you the risks and benefits of treatment. And they can help prepare you for what to expect from treatment with this drug.
