The Lingering Sore Throat
Persisting or recurrent sore throat can indicate a number of conditions, most of which are very curable. Acute pharyngitis is a sore throat that appears and can last up to a month before fully resolved. It is usually the result of infection viral, bacterial, or rarely fungal . Acute pharyngitis might be tested to make sure it is not Streptococcal, which needs antibiotic treatment to prevent possible rheumatic fever. Viral pharyngitis is usually allowed to run its course, treating only with comfort medications. The rare sore throat or mouth caused by a yeast infection needs further testing to make sure it is not a sign of something more serious.
Chronic pharyngitis is often more difficult to treat. When a sore throat last more than a few weeks it should be investigated by an Ear Nose & Throat doctor. The most common cause is a persistent infection of the tonsils . Usually a prolonged antibiotic course is prescribed to try and really kill the infection. When this doesnt work, and when the sore throats are interfering with the patients life enough, surgery may be considered to remove the tonsils and greatly improve the problem.
Sore throat in the morning only may result from overnight acid reflux, or even snoring / sleep apnea. In fact we will often see frank uvulitis and throat pain after a night of bad snoring!
Thyroid Nodule Symptom # : A Sense That You Need To Swallow Something
- What to do about it?
Like all thyroid nodules that cause symptoms, these patients need a thyroid ultrasound to look at the size, location, and characteristics of the thyroid, how many noduls are present, and where they are located. Often thyroid glands that are big won’t have any ultrasound characteristics that are worrisome for cancer, so most of theses do not need a FNA thyroid needle biopsy. Thus big thyroids comprised of lots of nodules often don’t need a biopsy, which is in direct contrast to nodules that are single, or those that can be seen or felt . However, if a thyroid is big enough that it is causing the patient to be aware of it, and it is causing symptoms of something stuck in the throat, then surgery is probably necessary. Remember, thyroid surgery isn’t just for nodules that we think may be thyroid cancer, surgery is often necessary for benign, non-cancerous thyroid glands which are large and causing the patient symptoms. This situation is quite common. It is also important to know that large thyroid goiters, and nodules that are on the back side of the thyroid are often required to have a CAT scan, since these bigger thyroid glands are not seen as well with ultrasound. This is why you need a good endocrinologist who know which scan to order and which scans are not necessary. Remember, a large thyroid is called a goiter and we have an entire page on thyroid goiters.
Treatment Of Subacute Thyroiditis
Sometimes drugs to relieve pain and inflammation
Most people recover completely from this type of thyroiditis. Generally the thyroiditis resolves by itself within a few months, but sometimes it comes back or, more rarely, damages enough of the thyroid gland to cause permanent hypothyroidism.
Aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can relieve the pain and inflammation. In severe cases, doctors may recommend corticosteroids, such as prednisone, which are gradually decreased over 6 to 8 weeks. When corticosteroids are discontinued abruptly or too early, symptoms often return in full force. When symptoms of hyperthyroidism are severe, a beta-blocker may be recommended.
If symptoms of hypothyroidism are severe or if hypothyroidism becomes permanent, synthetic thyroid hormone may be needed.

What Are The Symptoms Of Subacute Thyroiditis
Unlike other forms of thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis causes pain in the thyroid gland. In some cases, this pain might also spread to other parts of your neck, ears, or jaw. Your thyroid may be swollen and tender to the touch. The American Thyroid Association estimates that the pain commonly lasts between 1 and 3 months.
Other symptoms of subacute thyroiditis include:
- heavy menstrual periods
The first stage of subacute thyroiditis usually lasts for less than three months. The second stage may last for an additional nine to 15 months.
What Happens After This

Thyroid Nodule Symptom # : A Lump In The Neck That You Can Feel
- What to do about it?
Thyroid nodules that the patient can feel under the skin, which is confirmed by a doctor should almost always be examined by an ultrasound test. Depending on the characteristics of the nodule , the nodule may need a needle biopsy. We have an entire section of this website on thyroid needle biopsies.
Thyroid Nodule Symptom # : A Cough That Just Won’t Go Away Frequent Coughing And A Need To Keep Clearing Your Throat
- What to do about it?
Thyroid nodules that cause the patient to cough should always be evaluated with an ultrasound scan. Occasionally a CAT scan is required because it is better at looking at big thyroid goiters than ultrasound is . Sometimes it just can’t be known for sure if the thyroid nodule is actually causing the coughing. Often these patients undergo a laryngoscopy . If the thyroid nodule is causing the coughing, or there is a high liklihood it is the cause, then surgery is indicated. Of course, it is now very important for you to chose your surgeon wisely. The nerves to the vocal cords are occasionally damaged by a surgeon removing a thyroid and this will cause severe horseness and a loss of voice for months or even forever. We have an entire page dedicated to helping you chose a surgeon wisely!

One person can have the same headache for different reasons.
What Are My Hyperthyroidism Treatment Options
You may receive medicines, radioiodine therapy, or thyroid surgery to treat your hyperthyroidism. The aim of treatment is to bring thyroid hormone levels back to normal to prevent long-term health problems and to relieve uncomfortable symptoms. No single treatment works for everyone.
Treatment depends on the cause of your hyperthyroidism and how severe it is. When recommending a treatment, your doctor will consider your age, possible allergies to or side effects of the medicines, other conditions such as pregnancy or heart disease, and whether you have access to an experienced thyroid surgeon.

What Is A Swollen Thyroid
Anatomically speaking, the thyroid gland, located at the front portion of the neck, is part of the endocrine body system. A swollen thyroid or medically termed as goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Furthermore, people who suffer from a swollen thyroid are occasionally battling against hypothyroidism. However, there are actually a lot of reasons which cause the thyroid gland to swell. These reasons will be explained later in the discussion on the causes for a swollen thyroid.
Sore Throat Due To Hyperthyroidism
I have what feels like a sore throat but further down my throat. It comes and goes but it’s more late afternoon when it comes on. I don’t want to eat as it feels like my food is stuck or talk because it’s so sore but when I wake up it’s ok? I went to doctors Last week they reduced my beta blockers because I was so zapped out. I mentioned my throat but he wasn’t concerned and barely looked. He seemed miffed that the specialist mentioned I need to be careful about sore throats due to thyroid med and white blood cells. He was annoyed about having a blood test. Dr hasn’t rung back so I guess that’s ok but is my throat normal problem for overactive thyroid.

How Is Hyperthyroidism Diagnosed
If your doctor suspects hyperthyroidism, diagnosis is made through a blood test to measure TSH levels in your blood. To further delineate what the specific cause of the hyperthyroidism would be, tests such as antibody screenings, nuclear thyroid scans, and the use of radioactively labeled iodine can help pinpoint the cause. Hypothalamus and pituitary testing may also be necessary.
Thyroid Nodule Symptom # : A Feeling Like Things Get Stuck In Your Throat Sometimes When Eating
- What to do about it?
A thyroid nodule that causes any symptom of swallowing will need to be removed with surgery. The vast majority of these are simply large, benign goiters and only very few are cancerous. But like almost all thyroid nodules that cause symptoms, surgery will be necessary for this group. Many of these goiters won’t need a biopsy because it can be hard to get all the way to the back of the neck with a needle. Almost all of these will need a CAT scan to give the surgeon a better understanding of how big the goiter is and where it goes.

Sore Throat For 6 Months
I have sore throat for around 6 months. I think it all started with some sort of allergy because I would only have it when I was at home, generally any dust would make it worse. I moved out and my throat stopped being so sore but its still bad.. I feel like it is very sensitive. I also feel like saliva/mucus is licking down the throat.. Sometimes it has a bad It gets worse if I drink something cold or hot or when I go outside when its cold . My doctor thought its post nasal dripping so she gave me some steroid drops, didn’t help much. Now she thinks its a Glandular fever.. I don’t have any other symptoms apart from sore throat, and mucus going down it. The only other thing is that my lymph nodes in neck feel a bit tender. Also sometimes I feel like im producing way too much saliva.Few times there was some white stuff on sides of my throat. And also rarely get some small difficulties with swallowing but I think this might be just caused by super stress that im going through… I am non-smoking person.
You Know Why This Is The Best List Of Hypothyroid Symptoms On The Internet Because
1) This list is based on actual thyroid patient descriptions of their symptoms whether still on the inadequate T4 medication or from being undiagnosed or UNDERtreated . i.e. its not culled from all sorts of internet cold lists to build high numbers and empty volume
2) Like some lists, it does not contain adrenal-specific symptoms to bulk up the list
3) These are also symptoms which patients have reported greatly improved or totally went away once they moved over to having T3 in their treatment and being optimal to prevent the hypo from coming back. To get optimal without problems, you also have to have the right levels of iron and cortisol.

Diagnosing And Treating Dysphagia
Because dysphagia can be caused by various medical conditions, it is important to get a proper diagnosis on the cause of your swallowing difficulty. If the thyroid gland is enlarged enough to cause compressing symptoms, your doctor may be able to identify the goiter by palpating the neck area during swallowing.
Other diagnostic tests to determine if an enlarged thyroid is the cause of dysphagia may include:
Diagnosing swallowing problems may also include:
- Endoscopy: Thin, flexible tube equipped with a tiny camera is inserted into the esophagus to visualize the inside of the esophagus and pharynx for evaluation.
- Cineradiography: Barium is swallowed and then viewed on an x-ray to study its movement through the esophagus.
- Manometry: Strength and timing of esophageal contractions and valve relaxation are measured.
If it is determined that an enlarged thyroid is causing dysphagia, treatment typically involves partial or total removal of the thyroid gland . Multiple studies show results of 85% of thyroid patients with compressive symptoms experiencing relief of those symptoms after undergoing thyroid surgery. In cases of thyroid inflammation, your doctor may prescribe medication to reduce thyroid swelling and swallowing problems. Treatment will often depend on severity of the dysphagia.
Other causes of dysphagia can include:
- Certain medications

Whats The Connection Between Anxiety And Throat Symptoms
When youre under stress or feeling anxious, your body reacts by releasing adrenaline and cortisol into your bloodstream. In addition to increasing your heart rate and blood pressure, the release of these hormones can lead to a variety of physical responses, such as:
- rapid, shallow breathing
found that visceral anxiety is one of the strongest predictors of the severity of dysphagia.
Sore Throat From Kissing
I haven’t been together with my ex boyfriend for over a year now but everytime we kissed, I would without fail get a sore throat about a day later which would then usually turn into an infection. I’m quite depressed about it as I’m thinking, is this going to happen every time I kiss somebody?

When To See A Doctor
It is vital for people with unexplained fatigue or other signs or symptoms of hypothyroidism to see a doctor. Without treatment, an underactive thyroid can lead to serious complications, such as infertility, obesity, and heart disease.
A doctor can carry out a simple blood test to check a persons thyroid hormone levels. Treatment for hypothyroidism involves taking synthetic thyroid hormones. These medications are safe and effective once a person takes the right dose.
What Else Could It Be
A lump in your thyroid could be caused by an infection or a goiter, which is an abnormal growth of the thyroid gland. It might not be cancerous at all. Lumps in the thyroid usually arenât.
But itâs possible to have thyroid cancer without any symptoms at all.
Your doctor will examine your thyroid during routine physical exams. If you have any symptoms between checkups, such as a new nodule on the gland or a rapidly growing one, you should make an appointment to have your thyroid gland checked. Your doctor will do several tests to diagnose the source of the problem and decide on the best treatment.
