Myth : I Do Not Need To Get Off Gluten Because Tests Indicated That I Was Not Sensitive

Gluten is a substance found in wheat, barley, and rye. Gluten is a staple of the Standard Western Diet in North America, Europe, and Australia. It is found in bread, cakes, pastries and most processed foods. People with Hashimotos are more likely to have celiac disease compared to others, and eliminating gluten has helped some people dually diagnosed with celiac and Hashimotos shed their Hashimotos diagnosis . However, celiac disease is not the only problem related to gluten. My personal and clinical experience has shown that non-celiac gluten sensitivity is one of the biggest triggers in Hashimotos.

Lab testing can be very helpful in determining if you are sensitive to gluten, but unfortunately, testing technology is not perfect. More often than not, false negatives can be seen for common reactive foods like gluten, dairy, and soy. The best test for figuring out if you are sensitive to gluten is doing an elimination diet, where you avoid gluten for 2-3 weeks, then try it again to see if you react to it.

Studies have shown that gluten induces intestinal permeability in all individuals, regardless of whether or not they have celiac disease. And we know that intestinal permeability, or leaky gut, is almost always a factor with Hashimotos. Therefore, it only makes sense that eliminating a common irritant like gluten will lead to improved gut health and overall wellness for many people with Hashimotos.

What Is The Thyroid

The thyroid is a small gland located in the front of neck and is a power house for the body. The thyroid gland produces our thyroid hormones, namely triiodothyronine and thyroxine . T3 and T4 are synthesized from tyrosine, iodine, and various proteins. T3 is the most biologically active form of the hormone and receptors for T3 are located on cells all over the body. Thyroid hormones regulate the bodys metabolic functions, telling our cells how much energy to use, as well as controlling other hormonal systems.

Myth : Raw Dairy Is Fine For Hashimotos As Its Only Pasteurized Dairy Thats Problematic

Proponents of this myth rely on the information that the pasteurization process changes the protein structure of dairy proteins, making them more reactive. However, if youve already been sensitized to the dairy proteins casein or whey from drinking conventional milk, then consuming raw dairy, organic dairy, lactose free milk, or goats milk may still be a problem.

It is possible that if you drank raw dairy your whole life, you might not have developed a sensitivity, but in general, cows milk is difficult to digest for most adults with Hashimotos. Goats milk is highly cross-reactive as well for those with cow milk sensitivity. Camel milk, however, may be well tolerated by people with Hashimotos as the proteins are different enough not to cross-react.

The most common ways people experience a reaction to dairy include gut reactions , as well as lung reactions and skin conditions .

The thing about dairy reactions, like all delayed food reactions, is that its almost impossible to know if dairy is a trigger for you unless you eliminate all dairy for at least 2-3 weeks and see if some of the symptoms you are experiencing are alleviated. You can then slowly introduce dairy back into your diet and notice whether or not your symptoms return.

Dairy was a huge trigger for me, personally, and 60 percent of my clients have reported feeling better on a dairy free diet!

What Type Of Workout Should I Do

If your condition is well controlled, you should be able to do the same physical activity as someone without a thyroid disorder, says John C. Morris, MD, professor of medicine and endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

But if youâre just starting an exercise plan or if youâre still dealing with symptoms, low-impact aerobic exercise and strengthening moves are best.

âLow-impact exercise doesnât apply as much pressure,â says Norma Lopez, MD, an associate professor of endocrinology and metabolism at Loyola University Medical Center. âThatâs key, since hypothyroidism can cause pain and swelling in your muscles and joints.â

Try these activities:

Walking: One of the easiest workouts to do. All you need is a pair of comfortable shoes. It gets your heart pumping and burns about 280 calories an hour.

Water aerobics: If you have swelling in your ankles or feet, some exercises may be painful. Water aerobics is a good option. The water holds you up and lowers the impact on your joints.

Yoga: This can stretch and strengthen your muscles. It also helps you focus on breathing. One study found that people with hypothyroidism had better lung strength after practicing yoga breathing for 6 months.

Tai chi: Described as âmoving meditation,â this slow-motion form of martial arts is a proven stress-buster. Research shows it can help improve strength, balance, and mood.

Vitamin D deficiencies are associated with increased risk of Hashimotos disease, an autoimmune condition thats the most common cause of hypothyroidism. Try this: Make a lassi, a traditional Indian beverage: purée yogurt, frozen mango chunks, and lime juice, then pour into glasses and garnish with slices of lime. Purée yogurt with blackberries, honey, and grated ginger stir in vanilla yogurt to make swirls and then spoon into Popsicle molds and freeze. Dump a container of yogurt into a cheesecloth-lined strainer and refrigerate overnight stir in your favorite herbs and seasonings, and use as a substitute for sour cream.

Myth #: More Thyroid Hormone Is Better

If thyroid hormone helps treat hypothyroidism, some may think that more means better. “There’s a myth that extra thyroid hormone gives you extra energy and makes you lose weight,” Bischoff says. It’s important to find the right dosage for your thyroid hormone medication to give your body just what it needs. “Not having enough can make you gain weight and not have enough energy, Bischoff explains. But taking too much of the medication can also cause side effects, such as increased appetite, insomnia, shakiness, and heart palpitations. Talk to your doctor if youre experiencing any of these problems. He or she may adjust your thyroid medication dosage to address the side effect.

Selenium: The Missing Link For Treating Hypothyroidism

This article is part of a special report on Thyroid Disorders. To see the other articles in this series, .

A healthy thyroid is a critical component of ones overall health, and many people are struggling with thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism, specifically Hashimotos autoimmune thyroiditis. In this autoimmune condition, the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, with the resulting inflammation leading to an underactive thyroid gland or hypothyroidism. Hashimotos disease is the most common form of hypothyroidism and was the first condition ever to be classified as an autoimmune disease.

Ive written extensively about thyroid health, focusing on a multitude of environmental factors that may affect thyroid function, including gluten, gut health, stress, excess iodine, and vitamin D deficiency. Ive also discussed why dietary changes are always the first step in treating Hashimotos, and why replacement thyroid hormone is often necessary for a successful outcome.

In addition, you can support the thyroid functions and stimulate it to produce the necessary hormones by following a healthy diet free of sugar, synthetic hormones, and other ingredients that harm the thyroid, along with natural herbal supplements.

Myth #: I’d Know If I Had Hypothyroidism

10 Signs You Have an Underactive Thyroid

About 60 percent of people with thyroid disease are undiagnosed, according to the American Thyroid Association. Hypothyroidism symptoms are often vague and don’t necessarily point to a thyroid problem, Dr. Gaba says. “Plus, in some people with underactive thyroid, the symptoms take some time to develop and might not always be clinically recognizable,” she says.It can also be easy to mistake common symptoms of hypothyroidism such as fatigue, weight gain, constipation, depression, pain in the joints, and dry skin and hair for those of another condition. If these problems are new for you, see your doctor for an evaluation, especially if you have any risk factors for hypothyroidism.
